Gregg Doyel vs. LeBron: Where Was the League’s Best Player at the end of Game 3?
Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports was looking for a non-Dirk, non-Wade hook for his game three column (and an invite on Dan LeBatard’s radio show?) and settled on this: LeBron disappeared, once again, in a clutch situation. (If the Heat had lost, everyone who didn’t write about Dirk the Hero would have run with this.) So Doyel asked LeBron about it in the post-game, as you can see above. If YouTube is blocked at your office, here’s what LeBron said:
“I think you’re concentrating on one side of the floor. All you’re looking at is the stat sheet. Honestly, I’m a two-way player. Since D-Wade had it going … we allow him to handle the ball, bring it on offensively. You should watch the film again and see what I did defensively. You’ll ask me a better question tomorrow.”
In Doyel’s column, he wrote this:
After that play, James took two shots the rest of the quarter. He was blocked by Marion with 1:15 left and the game tied at 86, then missed a 3-pointer that would have clinched the victory with 4.9 seconds left. When someone makes a movie of the fourth quarter, they can cast Rick Moranis as LeBron James and call it Honey, I Shrunk the Superstar.
I too, was wondering where LeBron was in the 4th quarter. As Miami’s 7-point lead evaporated, and Dirk kept making shots, and this game began to look like a carbon copy of the Heat’s game two collapse, I tweeted as much. In a late-game spot, why wouldn’t everyone expect the “best player in the league for 3 or 4 years” (attribution on that quote: the world) to take over? If the masses want to mention him in the same sentence with Jordan, then he’s got to take over late. Maybe we’ve been spoiled with what LeBron did to the Pistons (in 2007) and Celtics (2011) and Bulls (2011) late in clutch situations.
Isn’t LeBron the NBA’s Mariano Rivera? Probably not. He could be, but for reasons nobody can quite grasp, LeBron doesn’t seem to always want to take over. And when the Heat do win the Finals, and Wade is MVP, the words in this paragraph will be TV material for a week.
This was part of the arrangement, and part of the criticism that’ll come with James winning a title. Wade’s on his way to the MVP in this series, and that’ll feed those who’ll want to diminish James’ choice to fortify his title aspirations with Wade. For some, this is why James will never get considerable due unless he parlays this partnership into multiple titles. He’ll need a fistful to validate the legitimacy of this front-running frolic. It isn’t fair, but it’s a fact.

To be fair he was fouled multiple times by Marion on this attempt with no call (first body, then on the release).
June 6th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
Sad to see LeBron Horry just piggyback his way to some rings. Alas.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
he’s not lying about being a great defender (for stretches).
Also, they were keeping the ball out of his hands for most of the game. Running hard doubles at him from pick and roll sets. He definitely influenced the game, and on both ends.
In conclusion, this known writer of tripe wrote some tripe to attract attention, and you gave him the attention.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
How did Bosh get that wide open look for the win? Did the ball magically enter his hands?
June 6th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
We’re really supposed to fawn over LeBron’s defense of Terry (probably the 4th option on the Mavs?). I thought I was told he could stop Dirk and would stop Dirk with the game on the line (Dirk rolled off another 10 straight last night night). Also, most of Terry’s baskets against Oklahoma City and the Lakers came b/c his defender would be sucked in by Dirk. It’s not like he’s beating anyone one on one.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
Who cares? His team won on the road, while not getting calls and with Dirk killing it. LeBron’s D on Terry (along with the latter missing some makeable shots) was probably the difference in the outcome.
Doyel is a prick, and that question was a dickfor if I’ve ever seen one.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
LeBron: Where Was the League’s Best Player at the end of Game 3?
Nice look to Bosh on the game winning basket.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
How unprofessional is Doyel? He’s wearing a fucking t-shirt while covering the NBA Finals.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
true, but i thought the 2 biggest defensive plays in the 4th were made by Wade (double on Dirk to force turnover with 1 min left) and then Haslem, playing Dirk straight up on the final shot.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
Where was Doyel at when LeBron had a monster series against the Bulls and carried a poorly performing Dwyane Wade to the finals?
I know that Doyel’s entire career is based on pageviews so I do not blame him for trying to stir the pot, but this Heat team has had one thing consistent throughout the entire year and that is the fact that they ride the hot hand at the end of the game. They did this vs BOS and CHI when LeBron was clearly en fuego. This series, Wade has the best match-up of all and has “gone off” accordingly. Spo and LBJ see this and let him handle the ball at the end of the game.
Where is the impartial analysis praising the unselfishness of a superstar in LeBron James? He had 4 assists in that 4th qtr last night including one on the game winning jumper by Bosh. In a day where the media jumps on every single athlete who is all about “ME” instead of “TEAM,” here is one who could not be MORE about team and they rip him for being unselfish and deferring to the hot hand?
Give me a break. Enjoy the pageviews Doyel. You get to keep your job.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
If that was off a Kobe miss it would have been more impressive.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
In the locker room celebrating an important win?
June 6th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
I’m as big a LeBron whore as there is, but there’s some validity here. He not only needs the title, he needs to win the MVP as well.
That said, all the people calling this “Wade’s team” obviously missed the Bulls series where Wade was probably the 3rd best player on the team. He has been their best player since the 4th Q of Game 1 though.
Also, is Dirk getting the Derrick Rose treatment a little here? Obviously he carried the team but he did have a horrible turnover and a missed shot in the final minute (and was on the LOSING team).
June 6th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
I think he may have been on Marion, too.
Derrick Rose those guys are not
June 6th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
Kobe knows when to airball to secure victories!
June 6th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
We can nip this meme in the bud right now, seeing as how the difference in the game was Chalmers 30 foot shot that shouldn’t have counted.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
DerekIAm is spot on.
And I’m a ‘uge LeBron hater (the personality, not the game).
June 6th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
We’re really supposed to fawn over LeBron’s defense of Terry (probably the 4th option on the Mavs?). I thought I was told he could stop Dirk and would stop Dirk with the game on the line (Dirk rolled off another 10 straight last night night). Also, most of Terry’s baskets against Oklahoma City and the Lakers came b/c his defender would be sucked in by Dirk. It’s not like he’s beating anyone one on one.
they not only don’t leave Terry open, but by putting Lebron on him, they basically suffocate him. And Lebron has to stay there if he’s on him.
Haslem is the guy playing great defense on Dirk, and Dirk is still making ridiculous shots in his grill all the time. But it’s still really good defense.
I”m not a basketball coach, but if Lebron was on Dirk, then Dallas would have favorable matchups elsewhere, and that 15 foot, goofy-legged fadeaway still goes in.
Terry, open for three, is the thing that Miami is trying to eat up with Lebron out there. He can close any distance out.
June 6th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
My head exploded when I saw that the Heat are capable of running a set play. A well executed, set play.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
how can he win the MVP when Wade has been Miami’s best player in 2 games, and some want to blame LeBron for game 2 loss?
June 6th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
He had 4 assists in that 4th qtr last night including one on the game winning jumper by Bosh.
that was a very nicely drawn up set play. Bosh/Haslem were just standing over there while doublers swarmed Wade and Lebron, and then Haslem set an ugly screen on Dirk, giving Bosh that wide open look for a pass he knew was coming, on a shot he knows he can make.
Nice play.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
Hell yeah.
Worst part about Kobe jacking his way to a few titles is that everyone forgets about the Iverson/Carter/TMac selfish player era that Micheal inadvertently created.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
LeBron’s D on Terry
was good game 3, but he got torched in the game 2 comeback. pair that with 8 combined second half points in game 2 and 3, and its not a stretch to wonder where he went.
this series is impossible to figure out.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
Clay, I have no problem with LeBron on Terry or the way they’re defending down the stretch. I have a problem with LeBron trying to change the narrative in the post-game presser. They didn’t win b/c he stood close to Jason Terry and didn’t double off him. Or if they did, 11 other Heat players could have filled that role.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
There’s still a game 4, game 5, etc.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
Dirk scored 10 straight points in the fourth quarter. He scored 34. The other four starters had 28. Dirk’s turnover was bad, but he also got doubled on another key possession, and found Terry, who missed an open three.
What I’m saying clown is that the Mavs got the whistles last night. They were more aggressive and that’s what happens. I’m not saying anything about homecookin.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
They did it at the end of Game 2 to tie it. Not sure if Riley or Estrada drew up that play for Chalmers, but they did run a set play.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
I’m as big a LeBron whore as there is, but there’s some validity here. He not only needs the title, he needs to win the MVP as well.
it doesn’t matter. IT honestly doesn’t. If there’s still people trying to dog him after this season, they’re just fucking trolls.
And I have dogged his game since 2005. My mouth is shut.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
And in my MVP balloting, LeBron and Wade split game one, while Wade took games 2 and 3. So 2.5 to .5
June 6th, 2011 at 10:04 AM
Does Doyel not remember game 5 of the Celtics or Bulls’ series?
June 6th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
I have a problem with LeBron trying to change the narrative in the post-game presser. They didn’t win b/c he stood close to Jason Terry and didn’t double off him.
they won because they had more points when the game ended. And in earlier parts of the game (including the start of the 4th) Lebron played rover on defense and just went after the ball.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
Completely forgot about that. But I’m also going to chalk that up to someone seeing something about Dallas’s inbound defense and knowing that Chalmers would confuse someone. I’ll give that all to “Estrada”. But that play to Bosh… it was just weird to see them run it. And you just knew Bosh was gonna make that shot.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I still have Shaq winning my MVP balloting 3 to 2 over Kobe.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I’m pretty sure if Lebron was interested in MVP awards, he could have stayed in Cleveland. I thought he made the move to Miami to win championships, which, if things continue, may happen.
Ugh. The masses have got to knock this off. He’s not Michael Jordan! No one is. Let’s evaluate Lebron on his own merits and quit comparing him to Jordan. It’s beyond silly to compare the two.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I’d much rather say he choked (he still hasn’t won shit), but in this series, it’s just a tough matchup for Lebron. He’s not going to be “the man” with Marion on him, and Wade having Deshawn or Kidd or Terry on him.
If he did try to be “the man” with Marion on him, he’d get shit for not deferring to Wade’s easier matchup. So he really can’t win.
/Still, fuck him
June 6th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
And in my MVP balloting, LeBron and Wade split game one, while Wade took games 2 and 3. So 2.5 to .5
You’re trolling for reasons to still hate Lebron. It’s OK to hate him, but at this point, you can only hate him because you hate him. Which is fine.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
dirt gets it.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
They did it at the end of Game 2 to tie it. Not sure if Riley or Estrada drew up that play for Chalmers, but they did run a set play.
jason terry did not think he was guarding Chalmers on that one. He thought he was guarding Miller. And so nobody guarded Chalmers. It was a lucky break that Dallas has such an awful defender.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
dirt gets it.
just not from his wife.
/burn
June 6th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I’m not trolling at all. I think he’s the best player in the league right now, he’s just not playing like it in this series. He did last series. So how is that trolling? Trust me, Wade’s MVP will not sit well with him or his people. That’s why you might see a different LeBron the rest of the series (not necessarily a better LeBron).
June 6th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
He was “the man” with Luol Deng on him. Lu isn’t a bustout defender. LeBron splashed shots in his face in the 4th quarter of 3 games. Ronnie Brewer and Paul Pierce have really been the only guys to even slow LeBron down. Marion is doing a solid job, too.
Agree.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
I like the way you think. unfortunately, this mentality doesn’t garner pageviews so it’s bunk.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
GERG Doyelllll is a stooge, too. Good for LeBron to make him feel like one. That’s like being the Joey Crawford of reporters. You’re not the star of the show. Stop trying to steal the spotlight. You’re a GD reporter.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
So how is that trolling?
because you’re down in the muck underneath him, making up a story about how winning a championship, but not an MVP trophy will leave him somehow stigmatized until he wins both in the same year.
And it won’t.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
I like when comparisons are made between players who have completely different games and skill sets…I’ve always thought that LeBron was more of a Super-Pippen than Jordan in terms of what he can do on the floor, Wade plays more of Jordan’s game
June 6th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
June 6th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Indeed. Wade has the hot hand and CLEARLY the easiest match-up on the floor, yet people are upset that LeBron didn’t “takeover????” WHY WOULD HE? If he did that and the Heat would have lost, the winning headline for Darren Rovell’s stupid contest would have been “LeBallhog.”
Funny thing is that the two people who care the least about all of this are LeBron and Wade, hence they are 2 wins away from a title.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
I agree. LeBron is a legit Pippen/Magic hybrid. Wade is definitely more in the Jordan mold.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
You really don’t think that will be part of the story after this finals is over, that he goes and joins someone else’s team, and then that someone else carries the team to the title? I don’t even think I’m being remotely unfair here.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
Did anyone see the Bob Uecker interview on Real Sports? It was awesome.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
After the Heat close this out, what’s the shelf-life on reporting their escapades this summer with the trophy? Since we don’t have real NFL news to report, a Canadian team is likely to win the Stanley Cup, and there’s a pending lockout in the NBA are we going to be just bombarded with post championship Heat coverage?
June 6th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
You don’t really believe that do you? Did you see the end of game 2, when Wade had the hot hand – yet LeBron tried to take over late for absolutely no reason? People have got to stop saying LeBron doesn’t care about these things. For 7 years in Cleveland, nobody cared more about his accomplishments. Nobody got whiplash looking at the scoreboard to check his stats more than him. He didn’t change overnight.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
He’s the best, I’d like the Brewers to go on a run here and make the World Series just so that he’d be able to call one more
June 6th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
You really don’t think that will be part of the story after this finals is over, that he goes and joins someone else’s team, and then that someone else carries the team to the title? I don’t even think I’m being remotely unfair here.
it won’t be an intelligent part of the story. It really won’t be much of a story to people who saw the games in the playoffs.
To quote esteemed commenter IrishMafia, the NBA is all about matchups. Lebron is getting a hard double 30 feet out on nearly every screen roll, and Wade is being single covered by Stevenson or Kidd.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
that resulted in Worst finals evar.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Wouldn’t Rick Moranis be played by someone else? LeBron would be one of the kids. And I assume Juwan Howard wouldn’t be shrunken, but killed off altogether.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
I’m so tired of this nonsense. He’s allowed to have an off game. Even Jordan used to have lines like 22 – 4 – 4 in finals losses. Sometimes you’re just not in the right frame of mind. That said, there is no really solid argument for LeBron being as good as Jordan at the same points in their careers.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Not true at all, but to avoid getting into a message board argument I won’t bother going back at looking at the DVR. The Mavs tried to get the ball out of his hands many times in the 4th. Sometimes it worked – and the ball got back to him…sometimes he split the double.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
It will be the story but stories like that are written for idiots who don’t know any better by writers who are just taking the easy way out.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Where was LeBron at the end of game 3? Being his team’s facilitator and playing lockdown defense on Jason Terry. A week ago, everyone was wondering “where is Wade”.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
One key difference between Jordan and LeBron is that Jordan did his thing with the support of the entire world (minus his opponents’ city) behind him. LeBron goes into every game with the knowledge that 95% of the world wants to see him fail miserably. That’s a lot for a 26 year old, no matter how you twist it.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
To be fair, Cursed is part of the media, after all.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
they tried it the last couple of possessions. They did not try it the whole game. From this point forward, it may be something they run with.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
“For 7 years in Cleveland . . . “
You lose all credibility when your username is “cursedcleveland.com” I’m not trying to be an ass, but you really do.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
I’d be all for that as long as they dedicated the championship to him. I love that “juuuuuuuuust a bit outside” is an ad lib.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
It’ll be a story written by those with an ax to grind.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
He’s the best, I’d like the Brewers to go on a run here and make the World Series just so that he’d be able to call one more
I wish his call of Braun’s home run to beat the Cubs in ’08 to help send the Brewers to the playoffs (thanks to the Mets collapse) was on youtube. It was really a great call. I was at the game, so I didn’t get to hear it live, but I heard it once on television later that day and you could just tell how excited he was. Fucking MLB and their copyright attorneys.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
I love all credibility b/c of a sarcastic, satirical website I ran that was full of jokes and the occasional “where are they now” post? Damn, I will never be able to restore my credibility. I guess something I’ll just have to live with. I should have done a screen capping website instead.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
lebron handled this well.
no sarcasm either.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
replace love with lost please..thank you!
June 6th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
This. Been wondering when LeBron the “super defender” was gonna show. This was bullshit to anyone who has watched a game, yet 99% of the so-called experts claimed it would happen. Unbelievable.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
I think the next year, the Brewers gave away a bobblehead of Braun’s homer with the call included in it – if you pushed a button on the bobblehead stand, Uecker’s call played.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
you must be new here…cursed has been the toughest on lebron for almost a decade now.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
No one can fucking ‘stop’ any superstar player. That is a myth. You can make them work harder but thats about it.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
The Mavs tried to get the ball out of his hands many times in the 4th.
they ran doublers at both of them. Dallas was very aggressive, trying to make Haslem shoot 15 footers.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I resent this.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
and i resent your resentment seeing as you only watched the nba when the bulls got good.
now we must kung fu fight.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
This. Been wondering when LeBron the “super defender” was gonna show. This was bullshit to anyone who has watched a game, yet 99% of the so-called experts claimed it would happen. Unbelievable.
Heat defense has been suffocating, and the only thing consistently falling for Dallas is an utterly unstoppable shot by Dirk. I”m not even a Lebron guy, but he’s doing good work on defense.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
I agree with all of this.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
You know me Clay, I’m not a LeBron guy at all and I can’t stand having to stay that he’s the best in the league. But Wade has been better on both ends in this series. I don’t think LeBron has been a bad defender, I just think he’s had a much easier assignment.
I’ve also been impressed with Wade’s overall level of play..meaning, he’s working his balllls off. The guy hasn’t not stopped running around and chasing loose balls or rebounds. I haven’t seen that desire from LeBron
June 6th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
fuck dwade…dwade and jordan don’t belong in the same category unless it’s describing favorable officiating.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Still bitter about the Mike & Mike post? Dear god, Lima, you’re a mess.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Likewise.
Also, I still hate LeBron, but I was very impressed with how he answered Doyel’s question.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Yet not on Dirk, which was the point. How many times did we have to hear that The Douche would check Dirk at the end the way he did Rose? It was asinine, but in everyone’s rush to suckle The Douche’s nutsack it kept getting put out there.
I will love watching The Douche try and act like he’s happy for Wade winning MVP.
/not for nothing, but Wade is a flopping pussy. Agree with JVG on this issue
June 6th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
pfffffft. that would never work.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
really? that’s the best you could do?
June 6th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
the heat have too much. lbj hasnt done a whole lot in 2 games, and it as long as the others hit 3s, it wont matter.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
TSH haha. a few weeks ago I tried to find a cached version of that site b/c I wanted to see how much built in animus I had.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
I don’t think LeBron has been a bad defender, I just think he’s had a much easier assignment.
you’re discounting the stretches of the game where he plays rover, and chases the ball for entire possessions. And you’ are discounting the value of taking away a team’s second option completely, while Wade is drawing Jason Kidd, who wouldn’t shoot it anyway.
I haven’t seen that desire from LeBron
and at this point, your whole argument turns to irrational hate.
The narrative (which is all yours) about Lebron needing a series MVP AND a ring is janked up bullshit. That’s where you lose me.
Also by telling me you don’t see his “desire.” I implore you to get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
I think the truth is all that is necessary. No need to go overboard.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Yet not on Dirk, which was the point. How many times did we have to hear that The Douche would check Dirk at the end the way he did Rose? It was asinine,
it’s not feasible given the personnel that Dallas puts on the court in the last five minutes. That would leave either Haslem or Bosh on the wing, trying to close out a shooter.
Do I think Lebron could stop Dirk? No, I do not. But….by the end of the first game I fully understood why he wasn’t guarding him, and was impressed with the strategy to suffocate Jason Terry with such a great defender.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
@ATL_Badger: Uecker’s HR call at 1:40. The “remix” is awful, but it has the radio call.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
i mean, you can speak the truth and still be creative with a play on his name. “the douche” is just lazy.
ive always been partial to LePawn.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
It’s not at all. I think Wade has played much harder. That’s why he’s been quick to every lose ball…driving into three guys, missing and still somehow getting the rebound. He’s been so ridiculously active that I can’t believe you think it’s hatred for me to give Wade credit for it.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Buncha Silky Johnsons in here.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
You act as if he chooses his assignment. You’re reaching.

not for nothing, but Wade is a flopping pussy
I really hate that about him. He also needs to get T’ed up for all the complaining he’s doing. And he’s really benefitting from single coverage in the first half of these games. Especially crappy single coverage.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
ive always been partial to LePawn.
LeBortion.
btw, terry torched lebortion for 8 points in game 2 in the 4th. lock down defender he is not. great, sure.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
He’s been so ridiculously active that I can’t believe you think it’s hatred for me to give Wade credit for it.
the hatred is when you blame Lebron for it. It’s possible to credit Wade without making it about Lebron at all. And it’s absolutely OK for Wade to win the series MVP without diminishing Lebron’s season and/or playoff season.

2 of those were on cherry picking, and two more were on another mini-break. So that’s not really true. And “torched” is kinda strong, regardless.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Clay, I’m not “blaming” LeBron for it. I’m just making an assessment.
And yes, it is OK for LeBron to not win the MVP. I’m just telling you that he’s going to take heat for it. So if you’re getting mad at my assessments, you better brace for the “hatred” you’re going to see from the national medial
That’s all I’m saying.

lock down defender is strong as well. also, if he was supposed to be a great rover, he didnt seem to do well in that stretch, either.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
if you’re listening to what marc stein, sam smith and ric bucher have to say anyways, you’re already retarded.

@ATL_Badger: Uecker’s HR call at 1:40. The “remix” is awful, but it has the radio call
gracias.

Certainly from Western Buffalo’s leading authority on high school wrestling.
you better brace for the “hatred” you’re going to see from the national media
I quit watching national media coverage on shit like that a long, long time ago. Because it plays to people far stupider than me who want to be told what they saw, or worse yet, given the bullet points on what they didn’t even watch.
So that story will pretty much escape me, except that JMac will troll with it a little bit if there’s an NFL lockout into the season.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
I’m kinda oddly enjoying this Bucher argument about rather having Rose than LeBron. I have no idea how he thinks he’s going to keep that up.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
it’s almost as if he should start a low, seven figures blog.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
I wear that label as a badge of courage.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
also, if he was supposed to be a great rover, he didnt seem to do well in that stretch, either.
I’m rooting for Dallas as hard as you are, promise. But you gotta take off the glasses and watch what they’re trying to do.
He’s not roving with 5 minutes left in the game.
I’ve spent years hating Lebron, and being frustrated by his juvenile offensive skills and his ridiculous traveling/carrying, and his not-quite-half-the-time defensive effort.
But he’s doing work in these games and it’s undeniable.
June 6th, 2011 at 10:59 AM

Damn. Goosebumps. Loudest I’ve ever heard Miller Park.

In the Chicago series, hell yes. He was incredible. He’s fallen shorts of that in the Finals. That’s all I’ve been saying. We’ll have to agree to disagreeee

you’ve been intimating that his “poor” performance will haunt him, and that there may still be a monkey on his back if he doesn’t also collect the individual award along with the ring.

is this about Bubba Prog? Because if it is, I only ever actually hate it when he talks. I don’t mind the parts where he puts up the pictures.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
I wish Bucher would take over for Riley as GM of the Heat (perhaps the old man will hang it up if they win the title), I’m sure the Bulls would be interested in talking trade

I hate the fucking guy, the real life guy. Have for years and years. But those 9-0 runs they keep having in the middle of quarters have a lot to do with his defensive aggressiveness (and all the double dribbling).
He’s real good at basketball. And Dallas is working hard not to let him get into an offensive rhythm. He gets a hard double, and Wade gets Jason Kidd all alone.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Boozer and bron bron reunited.

i hear you. but where was he when dallas went on the multiple runs they have gone on?
June 6th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
And I think it will (not saying it’s fair). He’s going to have to answer questions about “not being the guy” from assclowns until he wins won and he’s the obvious reason it happened.

June 6th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Yea thats bad. Here look at Atlantas payroll for a good laugh.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
his curse is in parts of his game, especially the playmaking, he makes the incredible look routine and effortless. The assist he had on the Chalmers 3, where he caught a pass from Bosh while on the move and made an on the money no look pass to Chalmers is a play that I don’t think another player in the league can make on a consistent level. The other assists where he makes a perfect bounce pass into the post to Bosh on the slam, off the dribble is just plain special. People need to stop watching these games like it’s The Real World and enjoy these games.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Clay, if you really want my irrational LeBron hating side, ask me about his horrendous footwork. I said on twitter last night that it’s the worst from a dominant player in my lifetime. He travels on catches at the three point line, it’s something I’ve honestly never seen before. That three he threw up with under a minute left, he caught the ball and bunny hopped before he even dribbled (and he wasn’t going anywhere). It’s seriously amazing.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I seriously am amazed at how effortless his passing is, especially from one corner of a court to the opposite diagonal (what the NBA defenses have been trained to give up). It’s unstoppable.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
You must be new here
I am, fair enough. You can see why I would think that, though I hope. As a new commenter I suppose I should steer clear of assumptions.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
I find it humorous that the best story the MSM can concoct re: the Finals is who is the MVP on the Heat. Tough predicament the Heatles find themselves in, indeed.
I’m sure they will be fighting over position on the parade float as they pour champagne on scantily clad, gorgeous women from South Beach while simultaneously urinating on Ric Bucher, Skip Bayless and Gregg Doyel.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Love when you chime in with the retarded one liners. Umm, yeah, I guaran-fucking-tee you LeBortion (happy spence?) and many other superstars have chosen defensive assignments regularly. Do you really mean to argue the ridiculous assertion that he hasn’t?
June 6th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
Vega, I remember in 2002 when Kobe asked to guard Iverson in game 2 after Iverson dominated game one, and his length bothered Iverson..and AI was something like 1o for 30 for 23 points.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Sheeeeit, almost every game Kobe will ask to guard someone who’s hot. I know Darrell would have us believe this doesn’t happen. And yet, it does.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
Well I hope that tradition ends next year. Kobe is a slippin’ quickness wise
June 6th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
Clay, if you really want my irrational LeBron hating side, ask me about his horrendous footwork.
don’t get me started. He is allowed three steps as a matter of routine, and then pitches a big baby hissy fit when they call him for 4.
I really can’t stand that foot shuffle on the catch and shoot 3 ball either.
I’m with you on this part.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
kobe’s been out of the playoffs awhile…probably should stop talking about him.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Spence, what how are the links in Cleveland treating you? You play anywhere nice?
June 6th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
This is inaccurate. The biggest effect on Iverson, other than being basically done by that point, was Ty Lue. Lue became a big story in the second half of game 1 and from that point on in the series. He got more play in the Finals than he did in the regular season. CC, you should have known you were wrong once that Vega dude co-signed with you.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
cursed…fucking amazing. short season, but when it’s good, ohio golf is primo. hit up sand ridge CC 2x, hawthorne CC, little mountain, stonewater, aurora CC and blue heron this year, as far as the premium publics around here are concerned (sand ridge is still private but i got an invite).
and im playing MUCH better this year…im so fucking happy and content.
you been out at all?
June 6th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
And by chance, do you have any proof that James didn’t ask to guard Dirk?
June 6th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
and sweetbriar’s legacy course, which is dressed up nicely, but nothing special.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
And by chance, do you have any proof that James didn’t ask to guard Dirk?
there’s no way for that matchup to work, and for Bosh and Haslem to be your two bigs. One of them has to guard a small guy that way.
It’s retarded to think it would work, and in retrospect, once Haslem proved healthy, a dumb thing to have thought would happen.
But I admit to thinking it.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
that’s true.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
LBJ would be a pretty beastmode power forward against teams with stretch 4′s…bosh should get dealt for some kind of big defensive center and let lebron revolutionize the PF position.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
that’s true.
the part about me being dumb? Yes, yes it is.
June 6th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Spence, holy shit, how can you afford all that?
June 6th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
golfnow.com brotha.
June 6th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
LBJ would be a pretty beastmode power forward against teams with stretch 4′s…bosh should get dealt for some kind of big defensive center and let lebron revolutionize the PF position.
that would hurt them defensively in the end, because having Haslem out there is good news for them. And bad news for everybody else.
June 6th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
The MVP of this series is Dirk, win or lose. Miami will win the series but its not worth this BS about who’s team it is and why LeBron isn’t a true star. He made his decision to go to Miami, its time to get over it and just watch the games. This has been the narrative all year long and its getting old. Are we going to be talking about this same story for the next 6 years? They are going to get a ring this year, whos the star of the team is irrelevant. He accomplished what he came for.
On the other hand, this could realistically be the final shot for Dirk Nowitzki, which is a shame. J-Kidd isn’t getting younger, Peja gets killed defensively when he is on the court, JET can’t get spacing with LeBron on him, and Tyson isn’t much of an offensive weapon. Meanwhile, Caron Butler is still sitting on the bench and the loss of Haywood was HUGE on the interior defense. With maturing of the Thunder and Grizzlies and the re-tooling LA and SA will be going through, I don’t know if the Mavericks can get back to this point.
June 6th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
I’m impressed with a lot of you whom I know are not fond of Lebron, but are defending him. You few are smart enough to set aside your personal feelings and give an impartial evaluation.
CursedCleveland: “I have a problem with LeBron trying to change the narrative in the post-game presser.”
“I have a problem with LeBron leaving my team.”
//fixed
June 6th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Ha, you must be new to the site to. I’ve had problems with LeBron even when he was on my team.
June 6th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Its irrelevant because Lebron’s not carrying them. If Lebron had Wade’s numbers this series, the narrative that this is Lebron’s team would be pushed down our throats and Lebron’s fans would be in here gloating (cue Coop).
June 6th, 2011 at 1:35 PM
The last two series are the perfect example of why this duo of Wade and Lebron is so great, and so unstoppable. You have two of the three best players in the league on the same team, so whichever one has the best matchup or the hot hand, he scores the points. The other defers, draws attention, or gets open looks on fast breaks. Wade was the second fiddle against Chicago, where Lebron was brilliant, and the opposite is true so far in the Finals. It’s all about winning the championship, and for anyone to criticize either of these two players for that is just stupid.
June 6th, 2011 at 1:36 PM
The MVP of this series is Dirk, win or lose.
awesome.
June 6th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
LeBron’s response was on point.
