Ballin’: Mavericks Beat Heat With a Rally for the Ages
After Dwyane Wade drilled this 3-pointer in front of the Mavericks’ bench and stunted so fans could take his picture, I went to bed. Told the wife, “up 15 with seven minutes left? No shot. It’s over.”
Thank goodness for DVR.
Dirk and Jason Terry led a 22-5 closing run, with Nowitzki making the game-winning left-handed layup with :03 left – we’ll get to Chris Bosh’s mental mistake later – and Dallas stunned Miami, 95-93 to even the NBA Finals at 1-1. Dwyane Wade – who never scored again after that corner triple – missed a running three-pointer at the buzzer. Here’s a GIF of him on the ground afterward, looking like an extra who just got shot in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Before diving into the comeback, here’s a stat: Since the NBA Finals went 2-3-2, 11 NBA Finals have been tied at 1-1. In every instance, the winner of game three has won the title.
There’s visual evidence of the comeback, and below it’s broken down just in case YouTube is blocked at your place of employment. Miami led 88-73 after that Wade jumper:
Jason Terry baseline jumper 88-75
Jason Terry cherry-picking layup 88-77
Jason Terry free-throws 88-79
Shawn Marion layup 88-81
Jason Kidd 3-pointer 90-94
Jason Terry jumper 90-86
Dirk jumper 90-88
Lebron misses,
Dirk layup 90-90 (17-2 run)
Dirk 3-pointer 93-90
Chalmers 3-pointer 93-93
Dirk layup, 95-93
Worth noting: The Heat had a foul to give on the Mavs’ last possession. Why didn’t Chris Bosh use it on Dirk before he could get a shot off? That’s probably why he didn’t get help defense from anyone – the rest of the team thought Bosh would burn a foul.
Everything prior to the last seven minutes was a dunk-fest. Mike Wilbon said it looked like All-Star weekend. Miami had nine dunks in the game, and I thought this LeBron follow jam was the most impressive.
Dwyane Wade had a couple nice ones, too.
Everyone’s going to try and make sense of what this comeback means for Dallas. Did Miami choke? Get too cocky? Was Dallas really angry about the D Wade celebration? Will this comeback mean for Dallas what it meant for the Mavs in game one against LA?
If this were a boxing match, and we were scoring quarters, I’d have Miami with wins in the 3rd quarter last night and the 3rd and 4th quarters of game one. Dallas won the fourth quarter last night (obviously) and the other quarters would be draws. So even though it looked as if the series was over at times in the late 3rd/early 4th quarter last night, it’s actually been quite close throughout.
Miami sure could use Chris Bosh. After a 4-for-16 clunker last night, he’s 9-for-34 from the field through two games.

20 dribbles then a jacked up 3 with 2 seconds on the shot clock…ahhh, welcome back Lebron. I wasn’t enjoying the new “clutch” Lebron anyway.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:37 AM
HUZZAH!
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:37 AM
Epic Miami messup on that final possession.
Didn’t commit a foul with one to give. Spoelstra wasn’t yelling for one, either.
Bosh, instead of Haslem, on Dirk.
Didn’t double team Dirk.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:40 AM
I don’t really see what fouling would have accomplished. Maybe if you were up by a bucket, but I don’t trust the officials enough to not call a shooting foul after the player makes a desperate attempt to go into shooting motion after the foul.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:40 AM
TBL, I also gave up on the game for Family Guy re-runs. It’s a good thing I changed back.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:41 AM
TBL getting old. Can’t be running a sports blog and not watch the entirety of the NBA Finals.
Heat might be done — too fragile to come back from that. Mavs in 6.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:42 AM
Dirk drove to LeBron’s side who had to stay home on Terry. The real problem is that Bosh shouldn’t have been on Dirk to begin with and probably shouldn’t have even been in the game. I would rather have LeBron, Haslem, or even Anthony guarding Dirk in that situation.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:42 AM
I could not be more pleased with the outcome of this game.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:45 AM
Mavs in five.

why wasn’t defensive stopper extraordinaire LeBron on Dirk
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:48 AM
It was me and 3 other guys with not much interest in basketball, trying to decide if we wanted to watch the last 4 minutes of the game, or start up some 2-on-2 NFL Blitz on N64. We went with the latter.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:48 AM
I think it’s bait?
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:51 AM
I like the cut of your jib
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:51 AM
I want to believe this, but I just can’t. I do love watching LeBron and Wade preen around the court like they’re acting out a play. The entire organization is annoying.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:52 AM
I still think it goes back to Miami with the heat up 3-2 but thank god its a series now. If Dallas had just rolled over I could have easily seen a sweep.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:52 AM
fuck dwade.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:53 AM
After LeBron hit that 3, I thought he and Wade were going to start making out. It looked a little homoerotic out on that court.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:54 AM
i know there is a lot of basketball left, but that was so satisfying.
lebortion with 4 second half points, then got abused by JASON TERRY in the fourth. not too good, king of kings.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:54 AM
It would be pretty epic if Miami loses this series and then a hard cap slams them and they have to part ways with the rupaul of big men. In a perfect world.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:55 AM
I miss the early 90s version of the NBA. Hard fouls were just that, fouls. No techs and what not, and the posing after every fucking shot was almost non-existent.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:55 AM
I love this nickname.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:55 AM
So you miss John Starks?
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:56 AM
This would be awesome. It’d be even funnier if in 2-3 years they dump D-Wade when he starts to breakdown.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:57 AM
I’ll take Starks if it means Jordan, The Dream and Barkley.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:57 AM
They’ll try to.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:58 AM
big time this.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:58 AM
lbj can coast like no other. if that guy actually focused for 48 minutes without acting out after every simple play, he would be a force. i think we have enough evidence now to say that that focus is not in his nature.
June 3rd, 2011 at 9:58 AM
sure you can. wake up, watch on DVR. missed nothing. a key is to turn the phone off so you don’t get texts.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:01 AM
Reminds me of Shaq a bit, except that Shaq coasted in the weight room and in the dietary aspect of ball. Imagine if Shaq actually cared about his body as much as he cared about his rap/acting career. He would have average 40 a game.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:03 AM
The Heat players get overexcited because their PA announcer reacts to every made shot like it’s the first time a basket was made in the history of organized basketball…still putting him a notch below that old Pistons clown however
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Then, in the morning, when you make your post about a Mavs win, you put up 4 Heat vids to the Mavs’ 2 because that’s all you remember from the game.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:05 AM
I read the first sentence and thought the same thing in my head. The sound they make for made free throws causes seizures as well.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:05 AM
He was too busy shutting down Shawn Marion all game.
/he had 20
//averages 12
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Its been nice seeing Marion operate when he is not the only person on a team playing defense. He use to never be able to score in the playoffs for Phx because he wasted so much energy on the defensive side of the floor.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:09 AM

Jason Terry baseline jumper 88-75
Jason Terry cherry-picking layup 88-77

Shawn Marion layup 88-81
Jason Kidd 3-pointer 90-94

Lebron misses,
Dirk layup 90-90 (17-2 run)
Dirk 3-pointer 93-90
Chalmers 3-pointer 93-93
Dirk layup, 95-93
I watched the whole game and I’m trying to figure out how it went from 88-81 to 90-94 back to 90-86?
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:15 AM
we’ll get to Chris Bosh’s mental mistake later
Why was Bosh on Dirk in that instance? Why not stick Haslem on him?
Game 3 makes or breaks the perception of Game 2 now. If the Heat win, Game 2 can be seen as the Heat taking their foot off the gas and the Mavs stealing one. If the Mavs win, congrats, the Heat are preening chokers.
BTW, is it just me or is whatever team LeBron is the most during-the-game celebratory team in the NBA?
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:15 AM
Dirk seems like a pretty nice guy. I question his taste in women and music, but I’m not gonna hate on him for that.

This site should be called The Big Knee Jerk — not cus of Jason but cus of the cmts left after any and every gm its almost scary how ppl react after one gm, if these playoffs have taught us anything, its that one gm is just one gm — if the Heat win 2/3 in DAL then no one will remember this gm coming back to MIA

BTW, is it just me or is whatever team LeBron is the most during-the-game celebratory team in the NBA?
its true. but thats who he is, an entitled sumbitch who feels the need to gloat about everything in his life.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:19 AM
The post-game pressers with Wade and Bosh were awesome.
Reporter: What about the celebration?
Wade: There was no celebration.
Reporter: We have video evidence of a celebration
Wade: Was there confetti?

I had completely forgot about that little episode until someone reminded me of it last night. Yeah… not sure what he was thinking there. She was pregnant with his kid, right? How did that story end up?
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Dude, watch TV and read journos. After Game 1 this series was over and Miami was too much for Dallas. It’s what everyone does. Also, I think the comments here are more along the line of, “let’s all laugh at Miami because they’re a bunch of douchebags.”
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Dallas has to hand out delonte west masks for the fans to wear, they just have to.

That might backfire on them. Last thing you want to do is give LeBron cause to try and go off.

what happened?
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:29 AM

Judging by his abundant use of ppl and gm, he’s obviously not a fan of vowels.

I’ll just assume Coop came in throwing haymakers with 7 left and then all hell broke loose.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:30 AM
That it’s the NBA Finals isn’t enough of a reason?
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:31 AM

two newer guys were on and really flamethrowing last nights thread.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:33 AM
I hope to God this is the catalyst for the Mavs winning this series. Loved the “No celebration” presser from Wade and leBron. I hope it’s hell for the Heat in Dallas for these three games but these teams seem to be better on the road than they are at home, so game 3 is as worrisome as ever. Go Mavs Go! Go Dirk Go! And for the love of god, please take care of the basketball.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Mavs in 6
Stern hands Cuban the trophy then a 5 year lockout starts dashing the hopes of the big 3 ever winning a title.
/a boy can dream.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Great comeback victory for the Mavericks. Colossal breakdown for the Heat. The Heat still win this series. Bosh played Dirk to go left, and Dirk obliged. Bosh played good defense on Dirk in other spots in the game, so having him Nowitzki wasn’t a big deal.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:37 AM
They are only late night commenters (happy hour on the west coast). Plus, TBL goes to bed at 9 it seems so he doesn’t see any of the nonsense.

June 3rd, 2011 at 10:42 AM
whatever happened to TBLAD Being the place people go when they’re a little drunk to talk about music, movies, ass calipers and BS about funny shit?

June 3rd, 2011 at 10:44 AM
The Spelling Bee was awesome last night.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:46 AM
That would have worked better if I hadn’t used crappy punctuation
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:46 AM
The basketball game being on so late was one thing, but why did the Bee have to start so late? When I fell asleep there were still 5 kids left.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Fucking people at the gym last night had the Spelling Bee on all the TVs and wouldn’t put the game on.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:51 AM
So many damn French words in the afternoon. What was that about?
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:52 AM
Yes, very much so. As much of a windbag psycho bojack ninny that Paolo was, he actually displayed a moderate knowledge of sports. 3rd Man displays no such knowledge.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:54 AM
False. 3rd Man has spewed much of his nonsense during the daylight hours.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Can we PLEASE stop the MJ/Bron comparison once and for all???? I wonder if Scottie watch last night’s 4th quarter and thought, man Mike woulda never let THAT happen….not saying Bron isn’t and won’t be remembered as an all time great, but I hope people hold on to the little bit of perspective they have left.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Good lord. I just got an instant message from a coworker asking if I knew someone named Necee from some sales department. I said the only Necee I knew was Necee Nash from Reno 911. She then told me she had no idea who that was. After I explained it was someone from tv she told me she wouldn’t know any TV people because she “watches zero tv.” Is it wrong that I think people who don’t watch TV are weird?
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Not enough use of the word “ninny”.
June 3rd, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Can we PLEASE stop the MJ/Bron comparison once and for all????
espn will never let that happen.
i have never made that comparison.

Was it just me or did it suck not getting to hear Barkley & co.’s reaction after that game last night, no offense to Wilbon who I respect but that crew doesn’t do it for me. Also, no Marv doing a game of that magnitude sucks….
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:06 AM
No, the guy clearly stated he has a job and doesn’t come here during the day. So don’t pat yourself on the back too hard thinking you ran him off or that he’s too scared of the big, bad TBL commenters to come back.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:06 AM

June 3rd, 2011 at 11:07 AM

seconded. espn’s agenda is so clear, it really distorts genuine reactions.

Ahhh Matlock…..DOUBLE FALSE! He stated he had some work to do around the house and it was unusual for him to be on the site during the day. Don’t let the facts get in your way though.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Mike Breen is pathetic – in fact, that whole ESPN announcing crew is garbage. They just drone on and on about anything non-game related. It’s a rare occasion if Breen ever actually ANNOUNCES what’s going on in the game he’s watching, instead of “moderating” the pathetic banter that is the Van Gundy-Jackson conversations.

June 3rd, 2011 at 11:14 AM
I dunno, one of my coworkers says he doesnt own a tv, I ask him what he does at night when he gets bored, he says he reads. I dont think he even listens to music. The silence would kill me.

Ahhh Matlock…..DOUBLE FALSE! He stated he had some work to do around the house and it was unusual for him to be on the site during the day. Don’t let the facts get in your way though.
If you’re talking about The3rdMan, I’ve seen him here lots during the day. So unless he’s had lots of work to do around the house over the past month, I’d say you’ve got your facts wrong.

No, I know a couple of people like that and they are not only weird but also annoying.

I’d have loved to see Kenny going off on Wade. And yes, Marv would have been perfect for this moment. That said, that would have meant listening to Reggie Miller clowning with the Heat for much of the game.
And has no one mentioned the acting job Wade tried to sell on that last desperation heave? He was holding his eye, looking at the refs for someone to bail him out.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I saw it too, might as well go now if all they’re discussing is 3rd Man’s (Grape Ape’s other name) comments from last night.

In all honesty I think its too late for this, he proved yesterday that he isnt capable of discussing anything other than himself or how he feels about other commenters. I mean he even got to Dickface Lisk, and thats hard to do.

I know someone like that. I’ll get the last laugh when she’s stranded on the side of the road after she gets a flat and has to sit there for 3 hours because she can’t get in touch with anyone and nobody will stop to help her.. because who does that anymore?

just ctrl+F “lisk” … pretty easy to find that way.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:24 AM
HA
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:24 AM
But fine…you guys scared him off. He’s at home right now cowering in the corner.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Because we’ve been told countless times by Mr. Wilbon and the rest of the ESPN crew how “tough” Wade is for “fighting through all his injuries” and for continuing to play hurt with the “beating he takes.” Yet other players who do similar things – Euros like Ginobli, Dirk, etc. – are labeled as “soft.” Guess its cuz Wade’s from the rough, though CHI.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Who said this?
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:27 AM
But it happens every time. Some argument happens on TBLAD. The so called troll doesn’t comment immediately the next morning. Without fail, rather than letting it go, some regular commenter will want to rehash the whole thing the next morning.

He reads like an entitled, trust fund baby to me. Good luck convincing a moron they’re a moron when they’ve got 5,000 square feet and no kids.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:30 AM
I am still erect from the Germanator’s sheer will last night
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:30 AM
But it happens every time. Some argument happens on TBLAD. The so called troll doesn’t comment immediately the next morning. Without fail, rather than letting it go, some regular commenter will want to rehash the whole thing the next morning.
very true.
Agree. But then people like GrapeApe come in and start defending the assholes previously mentioned, and thus a conversation that would have ended after a few comments takes over the entire thread.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Meh. Neither one of ‘em has ever won shit.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:32 AM
i hate to be sticking up for him like that, but his tone is no more “entitled, trust fund baby” than duffy (or myself, for that matter).
but lets not pretend that a couple “power players” here were party to the initial escalation.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:34 AM
I expect Hasselhoff to be court-side.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:34 AM
i think ‘power players’ is funny. its a friggin blog. there are frequent commenters, and not so frequent commenters, and there good and bad versions of each. no big deal.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:34 AM
but lets not pretend that a couple “power players” here were party to the initial escalation.
i am not a power player, but i certainly threw a few jabs last night and probably didnt help the “ignore” cause, which i should have. it was too easy though.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:37 AM
No one else has the balls to defend someone who’s been “black listed.” When is anyone going to admit that some of the regulars around here create “trolls” by being dicks to people who post a differing opinion but happen to be newbs? Both myself and 3rd Man experienced this. I had no intention of coming here to start trouble. But after ONE innocuous post, I had a bunch of regulars calling me an idiot. After I calmly tried to defend my opinon, a bunch more piled on. Sorry, I’m going to defend myself, not slink away with my tail between my legs. Of course, a newb who tries to give it back is a troll/asshole/whatever. So it’s a no win situation.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:38 AM
How about something else more important. Rafa getting sung happy birthday to after he fights of Murray. Can’t wait for the next match.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:39 AM
agreed.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Grape Ape was one of my favorite shows as a kid.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:41 AM
1) agreed that this gay petty BS would go away if some regulars didn’t escalate it.
2) it wouldn’t get escalated if the “newb” didn’t get angry and personally offended.
it’s a two way street.
and a lot of this would be resolved if we had that panel of commenters serving as sort of ombudsmen/women. that was a great idea…just wish it got followed through with.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Ok Beaglie.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Anybody seen coop?
Guess he only shows after heat wins.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Spencer, I agree with you. However, don’t you think it ultimately hurts the quality of the website/comments if newbs get attacked immediately? I had been coming to this site for a long time before I posted because I didn’t want to deal with some jackass treating me like an idiot because I wasn’t a regular. Then I posted, and it happened IMMEDIATELY. I’m guessing there are quite a few people who come here regularly who don’t attempt to comment for this very reason. Not everyone who comes here has the level of knowledge or obsession with sports that many of the regulars do. However, it doesn’t mean they can’t contribute something or just want to have a casual back and forth about bullshit.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:46 AM
1) agreed that this gay petty BS would go away if some regulars didn’t escalate it.
but it seems like that happens with regulars as well. regular on regular crime.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:47 AM
I remain convinced that 3rd Man is a professional troll.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:47 AM
2) it wouldn’t get escalated if the “newb” didn’t get angry and personally offended
This. I got hammered pretty good in a post dealing with something related to Mike Vick when I was a newb. But I learned to let it go. I think people get personally offended wayyy to often around here when someone disagrees with them. Then they go on this crusade to point out everything they think is wrong about previous comments that the person who disagreed with them made.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:49 AM
lol
And Magic is beginning to piss me off with the blatant rooting for the Heat. He may be burning some bridges with the retarded Laker criticism and the fawning over LeDouche and Wade.
He was my fave player of all-time and I overlooked the talk show fiasco, but I’m beginning to get annoyed. He needs to fucking chill.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:50 AM
In fact, I’m pretty sure the first day I spent here where I commented more than once, Spence and I got into it in the Roundup. I didn’t really know how he operated, and I ended up getting into a pissing match with him about Wisconsin Football or the school or something. He scared me away for about a week. I came back though, and I wasn’t an ass.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:50 AM
yes and no. if it’s done in a funny, non-personal manner, i think everyone wins.
and im not acting like im not guilty of doing that shit either. it’s easy to become part of a mob, but at the same time, i think the fact that confrontation is almost welcome around here makes for more quality comments too.
like i said before, it is a two way street though…if a new commenter comes out guns blazing and attacks regulars who are around here all day (like myself) of coruse there’s going to be some retribution, which is meaningless considering it’s a fucking anonymous forum.
the comment section is big enough taht there should be some legitimate oversight. not censorship or rules, but there should be some kind of mechanism in place to make sure that the new kids are welcomed an not ostracized from the get go.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Spencer,
The problem with the commentor panel is that it would make it even harder on new posters. I’ve been a sporadic commentor for years (since cowherd) but there is a giant pile on/ignore that happens with the older commentors. Maybe its deserved based on the content of my posts, but I see it with others.
The panel would probably ban the newbies before actually taking care of the provoking veterans.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:51 AM
But why is it OK for a regular to be a dick to a newb, but not OK for a newb to get offended? Don’t be a dick to the newb and there will be no reason to be offended. Also, if you choose to be a dick to a newb, you can’t then call them a troll when they defend themselves or throw it back at you.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:52 AM
they know what they’re getting into. it’s fine to shoot another soldier, but not a civilian, ya hurd?
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:53 AM
i don’t see it…and i don’t think that shit with the older commenters is any different than regulars.
i have plenty of comments get shat on or ignored. it happens.
it’s not…that’s why ive been saying both parties are at fault here and we should try and make it a more welcoming/pleasant place to come to.
i mean, that’s why ive stuck around so long. i love the comment section here.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:55 AM
they know what they’re getting into. it’s fine to shoot another soldier, but not a civilian, ya hurd?
i suppose. at the end of the day, its a blog. and not the only blog. if some people dont like the ebb and flow of a thread, they are totally free to go somewhere else.

June 3rd, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I’ve never heard Ginobli referred to as soft. Nowitzki probably received that rep from being shut down by 6’5′ defenders earlier in his career.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:58 AM
All I need to know: is it more like X-Men 2 or that Wolverine movie?
More like X-Men 2. As awesome as the guys playing Magneto and Prof. X were, I actually thought Beast was best handled.
June 3rd, 2011 at 11:59 AM
totally.
commenter politics is tiresome though. i think that committee tbl was talking about way back when would be a great step towards keeping this bullshit out of here. they could nip the problem in the bud before it turns into last night’s bullshit.

No one else has the balls to defend someone who’s been “black listed.”
People still call out “Free TST” or “Free Sparty” or “Free BSanders” etc. Hell, there’s some folks who still opine to have Paolo back out here, if only to see what kind of nutty shit he’ll say next. I think it comes down to how you are perceived by the commenteriat at large.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:04 PM
where at?
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:05 PM
When I started commenting regularly, I never got attacked.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:07 PM
of course…no different than anything else, really.
im pretty sure i attacked the shit out of you.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:08 PM
I wouldn’t say attacked. You and I got into a few debates. But nothing mean spirited. Actually, I remember us agreeing on way way too many things.

im pretty sure i attacked the shit out of you.
/looks at battle scars from first interaction with spence
//it’s cool though, I use them to get laid
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Everyone wants to play their position, and come off as right by consensus as opposed to right by thought. It’s nothing more than the talk radio mentality creeping into this blog. When someone comes in and challenges that consensus, the weakest of the group are usually the ones who come out and argue fervently. I go up against it all the time, but it’s fun for me, because I know 99.9% of the time, the person talking smack is only doing it from the safety of their keyboard. And no, I’m not intimating fighting.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:10 PM
True, but there is also a mob mentality. And if a newb get into it with a regular, it’s basically over for that newb no matter what. A lot of commenters who weren’t around when my whole thing went down have no problem piling on.
Not to mention, there is no chance at calling a truce. Ya’ll are some grudge holding sumbitches.
I’d agree it doesn’t happen all the time.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Or maybe I just see it that way b/c I “attacked” back and continued to comment. Either way, I didn’t take it personally or try to act like I was above it.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:11 PM
I remember being new and getting offended (and/or defensive) about every little comment directed towards me. But once you start commenting on here regularly you grow a thick skin and realize these are all fake internet “friends” and what gets said around here doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of your life. Well, except when someone calls you the c-word and hopes you die. That’s kinda crazy.
There’s no need to attack someone for being new, but I didn’t see that yesterday with the 3rd. He’s a victim of having thin skin and throwing bombs after someone teased him for something he said.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:11 PM
agreed with this.
tell me how you really think about me, darrell. lol.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:13 PM
no different than spats with friends in real life, either.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I wouldn’t agree with this. And that’s what makes the commenters great. I’ve had heated debates with a lot of people in here, and no one carries that stuff over to the next day, or even the next post. I don’t think there’s anyone out there holding a grudge against me.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Agreed. I know there have been days when I’ve wanted to kill SC and Spencer. I take some time to cool off and everything’s fine. I’d still have beers with all y’all. Except Darrell. He’s an asshole.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:17 PM
i would agree with that…im a total grudge holding asshole. i never forget shit people say…i still remember when mags dismissed a retort like a fart because im open about my imbibing of a certain herb. i also remember darrell doing the same thing.
no ill will towards either and no hard feelings, but i remember slights against me for a long time.

June 3rd, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Hmmm….I kind of disagree. I think if I tried to become a regular poster here at this point many would ignore me and others would immediately get their hankles up. Hell, I got turned into a TBL meme (which, by the way, is what pisses me off the most. I hate the whole concept of memes and the word itself makes my skin crawl. Memes are the worst thing to happen to the internet since AOL, they are nothing more than inside jokes that are neither inside nor funny. When “double rainbow” gets put on a t-shirt, you know it’s gone too far. Except of course for the leprechaun in Alabama. That will never not be funny.)

and i like meme’s as long as they don’t get overused. and speaking in russian speak will never be not funny to me even tho it’s probably tiresome to everyone else.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:27 PM
Dallas’ offense is boring to watch.
I kid, I kid…..
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Couldn’t help but notice this. I got into it with Darrell once because I had not fully read all the comments and missed what he was responding to. I was kind of a dick to him, even though I was completely out of my depth in that post, and I’ve felt bad about it ever since. But even though I can’t comprehend some of his positions, I have to agree that Darrell knows his stuff and makes his points very well.
Also have to agree with Watsonian. Contrarian comments are accepted on here so long as they are insightful. But someone coming in and saying something like “The Mavericks offense is boring” with utterly no support to his point whatsoever is going to browbreat every time for not adding to the discussion at hand.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Yes, but this is simply a statement of opinion. It doesn’t necessarily require any facts to back it up. You can certainly agree or disagree. But responding with “you’re an idiot” adds nothing to the discussion either.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:38 PM
This was just soul crushing to watch. I mean seriously. Ugh. With the 2-3-2, Dallas now has the edge.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:39 PM
But responding with “you’re an idiot” adds nothing to the discussion either.
Definitely, I think most people would agree with that.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:42 PM
GrapeApe, while I wasn’t around (I don’t think) for the post when all the negativity and near meme was formed about you, I think that if you came on to be a regular commenter and made solid points in discussion and whatnot then you would be easily “accepted” by the longtime commenters. I think you’ve proven that you are capable as doing as much in today’s thread.
There’s certainly a warming period for all new commenters, but I remember when I joined- I think it was probably harder to become a new commenter in early 2008 than it is now. There was a much tighter knit group of well groomed commenters. Of course, the first thing I did was attack NickP, and that did not go over all that well with the old MLJ guys. Obviously it was over all his Kobe vitriol. I though my points were well thought out and solid, but they weren’t to pretty much anyone else. I learned from that though, and cooled it. Since then I have taken shit for many things, but you just roll with it and forget about it the next day.
I’m not sure I’ve seen more than 2 comments from 3rdman that add any real value to a thread. he keeps discussing old things too, things that are very trivial to everyone else because we pretty much left it behind. That’s why he’s been torn apart. If you show up and start commenting with halfway decent comments, it’s not hard to be “accepted” here these days. I find everyone to be friendly as a general rule.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:49 PM
the /coop meme will always be funny. I don’t care what you say.
Dude, I get ignored ALL the time. Don’t be such a baby. And I don’t remember the meme that was created for you. Refresher?
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:49 PM
I think that if you have an opinion on something, you should definitely be strong about it. However, I also think that confusing the strength of your conviction with the validity of your opinion and the invalidity of another’s opinion is wrong. I think that creates some friction between commenters, especially newbs and regulars.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Oh, I don’t care about being ignored. But if I am going to be ignored, then there’s no point in trying to join a discussion. I think the meme was something about calling out commenters from my high horse or something like that.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:53 PM
I think if I tried to become a regular poster here at this point many would ignore me and others would immediately get their hankles up
Didn’t SC get voted on to never be allowed to comment again at one point? Who cares. He’s gotten a ton of shit from everybody and he’s like everybody friend on here
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Didn’t SC get voted on to never be allowed to comment again at one point? Who cares. He’s gotten a ton of shit from everybody and he’s like everybody friend on here
I think that’s happened more than once. SC I think has the thickest skin of almost anyone here and I have to hand it to him for that.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I couldn’t fucking stand SC for about a month where everything he said irked me to no end. Then I got over it, we’re cool now. He’s still annoying, but that’s SC.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:59 PM
when SC started commenting, i was BRUTAL towards him. it was bad.
June 3rd, 2011 at 12:59 PM
I guess I also feel that if newbs are expected to have thick skin, regular should too. But some regulars get butthurt very quickly if a newb tries to give it back to them. There is just a different vibe between newbs and regulars which is understandable I guess. But if someone starts giving me shit, I’m going to give it right back. That seemed to only escalate the hate towards me.
June 3rd, 2011 at 1:05 PM
i think there’s a difference from getting ripped apart by a familiar person and someone totally new who’s sense of humor you don’t understand yet.
there’s some guy, i think doc holliday, who drive-by posts shit that just calls me out and i have no idea why. im not about to give that asshole a listen.
June 3rd, 2011 at 1:07 PM
I like to take shots at spencer for going to UNT (even though they do have one of the best music programs in the country). When I first started doing that a few people thought I was being ridiculous and trying to undermine his OSU fandom. But spencer got it, and he’s given me some pretty good jabs about my alma mater as well.
June 3rd, 2011 at 1:14 PM
I totally agree which is why I think regulars shouldn’t give newbs shit right away. Maybe I have a little too much hubris or my skin is too thin, but it really pissed me off when, in my first ever comment, I posted what I thought was an innocent comment and was called an idiot by several commenters. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, but that’s not how I personally interact with a person for the first time.
I give shit to my friends all the time, but I don’t meet someone for the first time and call them an idiot for having a differing point of view. And I know it’s just a sports blog, but despite the fact that everyone around here likes to say that, many of you have to admit (and some actually have) that it is more than that to you personally. In addition, the anonymity of the Internet doesn’t change the way many people want to be treated.
June 3rd, 2011 at 1:18 PM
I’d just like to point out that Spencer and SG will be early casualties in the inevitable zombie outbreak.
June 3rd, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Spencer,
Golfing at Leisure Time in stow. I suck, so its not fair for me to ruin people’s enjoyment on nicer courses.
As for my earlier comment, GrapeApe summed it up pretty well. It’s not that it matters whether you’re ignored or not, but it does affect the way I view this blog. It’s just an observation of what its like to comment here.

totally brah. but if we ever met in person, id probably be herbally mellowed, and im much easier to get along with when im not stressed by work and sobriety.
June 3rd, 2011 at 1:34 PM
In reality, I’m pretty mellow at baseline. And while I don’t partake in herbal mellowing, I’m sure some people mistake my calm for being constantly baked.
Well I’m off to get some work done. Maybe I’ll come back for TBLAD (although I’d be willing to bet that the hate will flow freely).
June 3rd, 2011 at 1:42 PM
What is your definition of “giving shit” though? The whole third mad disaster started because he said the Dallas offense was boring, a few commenters disagreed with him (which I’m pretty sure they had the right to do) and he came in post after post whining about it. Just look at last night’s thread. The guys who were “attacking” him were also making innocent posts about the game/spelling bee or whatever, but all 3rdMan did was harp on comments against him.
June 3rd, 2011 at 1:46 PM
That Dirk picture up top is beast!
June 3rd, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Oh, I don’t care about being ignored. But if I am going to be ignored, then there’s no point in trying to join a discussion. I think the meme was something about calling out commenters from my high horse or something like that.
I just got here, but I don’t think you’d get ignored if you had something relevant to say. And as for “becoming a meme,” who hasn’t.
When I first started coming here I was in a huge fight with Irish Mafia pretty quick and I didn’t even get along with BSanders, or JPQ, or whoever. But I liked the jokes, and the sports, and when I got made a joke, it’s kind of the first step toward being accepted.
But the Clown used to get me so stealthily it would sting. I never said, but that’s why I’ve always hated the Clown.
But eventually, after you make your big splash (for you, done) and become the butt of jokes (for you, done) once you calm down some and start being your regular funny/interesting/knowledgable self, nobody’s going to ignore you.
So try if you want. The meme thing goes away eventually, but not if you only pop up periodically the day after somebody says your name, because your google alert went off at high horse central.
June 3rd, 2011 at 3:04 PM
I give shit to my friends all the time, but I don’t meet someone for the first time and call them an idiot for having a differing point of view.
I have a very expressive face. If I think someone is an idiot, the person I think it about knows it without me saying a word.
