Ohio State Fans Are the Worst
This website has been around for a little over five years – today’s a big one-year anniversary! – and for whatever reason, a large number of people who comment and email are from Ohio. The Buckeye State is probably more well-represented than any other in the country. And there seems to be a preponderance of angry people in Ohio. Why is this? Sounds like a case study waiting to happen.
Angry Ohioans drove Kirk Herbstreit out of Columbus, and now they’ve turned their attention to Zack Meisel, a 21-year-old student at Ohio State. What did Zack do? Meisel, who is the editor-in-chief of the Lantern, Ohio State’s student newspaper, co-wrote a story about former Buckeye Ray Small last week that drew national attention. Small quickly tried to say the paper twisted his words; audio tapes backed up their story.
Enter hate mail. Lots of it.
But not before an emailer wrote Meisel and predicted that The Lantern editor and Oldham were the most likely candidates to be found dead in the nearby Olentangy River.
“I did read through most of them, if not all of them,” says Meisel. “There were definitely more than 100. Some were, ‘Thanks for trying to take down our program.’ For all the fans who reacted negatively, half wanted me to move to Michigan, half wanted me to move to Nashville with Kirk Herbstreit. I wish there would have been a consensus.”
Hey Braxton Miller and interim coach Luke Fickell – good luck.

the title of this thread is the greatest title of any thread ever written.
All this shit couldn’t have happened to a University.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:35 AM
The internet is a blessing and a curse. I wish I didn’t have to see evidence every day of just how many stupid people there are in this country. Ohio is like the epicenter of moronic sports fans.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:36 AM
This should be a fun comment stream.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:36 AM
Since we are using extremely small sample sizes I would put the following fan bases as “worse”:
-La Dodgers Fans for almost killing someone
-Auburn Tigers fans for vandalizing and killing a tree
June 1st, 2011 at 11:36 AM
Zack my boy, gotta go Nashville over Michigan. That’s just a no-brainer.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:37 AM
Ohio is like the epicenter of moronic sports fans.
Alabama would give Ohio a run for its money.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:37 AM
but why?
June 1st, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Because you and Duffy bait them.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Why are they morons? Or why do I think this way?
June 1st, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Alabama would give Ohio a run for its money.
I have to second this. In Alabama a fan of a one team POISONED TREES WHICH WERE IMPORTANT TO THE RIVAL TEAM. Hate mail is par for the course in college football reporting, but a fan looking up tree poisons, going to a town and poisoning said trees is a whole new level of moronic craziness.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:41 AM
This is funny. “A large part of our readership is from Ohio. Here’s a post telling you how awful you are!”
June 1st, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Truly unreal.

Every team/program has bad/irrational fans, some are just more vocal than others.

shocker. did Small really think that in a story of this magnitude that a paper would just start throwing out bs to get attention? that dude doesn’t strike me as the brightest bulb of the bunch.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Man Vs Food Nation is on tonight. I think the Travel Channel is horrible other than that. I’ve seen repeats since last fall, IIRC.
/About damn time!
June 1st, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Poisoning a tree is worse than threatening to kill someone because they interviewed someone who said something negative about their school’s football program? I would say multiple death threats is worse than ONE person poisoning a tree. Both are stupid, but one is not as stupid as the other.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:44 AM
BTW fans are fans, its sports, it happens.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:45 AM
it was bammer fans that vandalized the Auburn trees, but I’m sure ritty will understand your mix up.

June 1st, 2011 at 11:47 AM
I’m totally over Man Vs. Food. Adam Richman is way too yell-y for me. There is no need to shout so much about a giant hamburger or ice cream sundae. The only good show on Travel Channel is No Reservations.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:47 AM

What would you say the ratio of hate mail/death threats mailed to a reporter versus people who actually act on their threats is? These people are all talk and this 21 year old editor knows it, thus his cavalier response.
Another guy took the time to look up how poison a tree and then drove to another town in order to poison said trees. It’s a difference between being a blowhard in an anonymous forum and taking a calculated action.

The smartest thing Colin Cowterd ever said was, “Fan is short for fanatic.”
June 1st, 2011 at 11:47 AM
I know a really nice boy from Ohio. Ohio State fan, but also a Bills fan, so he’s pretty down to earth.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:47 AM
I wouldnt say Ohio State are any “worse” than any other fan base. It happens that they are a high profile team from an area of the country that has few other high profile teams (professionaly and college), so the fans happen to be really over the top in the support. To say that the OSU fanbase is any better or worse than similar schools (by populairty –Bama, Texas, USC, Florida, PSU) is a reach. In any large group of people you are going to have idiots — it just so happens that the OSU fanbase has a very vocal small group of idiots.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:47 AM
Nah, Man v. Food is the one where the dude gorges himself until he vomits off-camera.

tOSU graduates 50K every year. They move all of the country. Biggest fan base (arguably) in the country located every where.

The only craziness I can readily think of that is at a higher level than the Alabama fan killing the Auburn trees is from a few years ago when an Oklahoma fan (who didn’t actually attend OU) assaulted and nearly ripped the testicles off of a Texas fan (who didn’t actually attend UT) for wearing a UT shirt into a supposed OU bar.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:49 AM

Could it be because you take any chance you get to rail on anything and everything Ohio?

I’m with SG. Death threats are much worse than one radical idiot poisoning some fucking trees.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:50 AM
It happens that they are a high profile team from an area of the country that has few other high profile teams (professionaly and college)
Not really. You could make that argument for Alabama, but not Ohio: Cincinnati Reds, Bearcats, Bengals, Browns, Blue Jackets, Cavs, Indians. Ohio has more sports teams than most states, I would imagine.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:50 AM
I worked with a few people from Oklahoma. They told me a lot of it is outlaw town. Very dangerous for people to be in
June 1st, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Maybe I’m just desensitized to the whole poisoning plants thing after a Sox fan smuggled in weed killer and poured it on the ivy in Wrigley Field.

Paaaaawwwwwwwwwl, ‘dem Yankees just don’t git it. college ball is all that there is down yonder. It’s in ‘er blood in Title Town. After all, we gots 17 damn titles. Now let’s go poison the sum’bitch’s trees on the Plains. Rooolllllllll tiiiiiiide!!

June 1st, 2011 at 11:51 AM
I’m with SG. Death threats are much worse than one radical idiot poisoning some fucking trees.
Do you think any of the death threats are actually serious though? I kind of look at it the same as if that person was calling someone an ass hole. The Auburn guy actually made good on his threat.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I laugh at the number of dumb rednecks who have A&M back glass stickers on their lifted pick up trucks down here

Fair enough. Not to dissect this too much, but the ivy in Wrigely dies off every winter anyway. Trees generally last much longer.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:53 AM
I mean, they’re fucking trees.
And you think any one of those death threats is actually real?
June 1st, 2011 at 11:53 AM
LOL.
Didn’t Updyke apologize to his high school football coach in his statement? WTF? The guy is in his 60s.

tOSU graduates 50K every year. They move all of the country. Biggest fan base (arguably) in the country located every where.
This isn’t McNair’s killer here. It’s a pretty simple and solveable case.
This. Also, for whatever reason, there seems to be a disproportionate number of OSU fans that didn’t actually attend the school when compared to other schools around the country. The exception being Alabama.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:54 AM
So now his schtick is only screaming at the audience about food? How is that entertaining? I could see putting up with the screaming if you knew at the end of the show you would get to see him eat a pound of scalding hot peppers. What’s the point now?
June 1st, 2011 at 11:54 AM
When did this happen? He deserves a signed jersey from Ozzie
June 1st, 2011 at 11:55 AM
They’re fucking death threats; of course they should be taken seriously.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Not really. You could make that argument for Alabama, but not Ohio: Cincinnati Reds, Bearcats, Bengals, Browns, Blue Jackets, Cavs, Indians. Ohio has more sports teams than most states, I would imagine.
I went to OSU and all of these teams are support are almost exclusivley by city, not many people from Cincy\Dayton like the Indians and from Cleveland with the Reds. Also, throw away the Bearcats and the Blue Jackets cause no one really cares about them. The one universal thing living in Ohio is to support Ohio State. But, I get what you are saying.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Fair enough. Not to dissect this too much, but the ivy in Wrigely dies off every winter anyway. Trees generally last much longer
Huh? Don’t most trees “die” every bit as much as the Ivy does every winter? They don’t replant that stuff every year.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:55 AM
The leaves fall off but the roots don’t die. Grows back every year.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Yes. The Wright Thompson interview w/ Updike is a must-read. That guy is fucking nuts.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:56 AM

June 1st, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Huh? Don’t most trees “die” every bit as much as the Ivy does every winter? They don’t replant that stuff every year.
No? I mean the leaves fall off, unless it’s an evergreen. But from what I remember of plant biology in middle school (which is not much), the trees don’t actually die.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:57 AM
holy shit! that’s why Tressel is gone! total protonic reversal!
!!
June 1st, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I thought I hated Ohio State as much as anyone. Recent events and this blog have convinced me otherwise. I mean I’m still bitter about 2002 and I never root for them in any sport, but shit is getting borderline ridiculous.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:57 AM

The leaves fall off but the roots don’t die. Grows back every year.
Well then I stand corrected.
Still, poisoning trees is pretty fucking crazy. Anonymous death threats may be jarring but the kid is an editor for the school newspaper. He’s not the President of the United States.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:58 AM
wrong, bro. you obviously haven’t lived down here long enough.
June 1st, 2011 at 11:59 AM
No? I mean the leaves fall off, unless it’s an evergreen. But from what I remember of plant biology in middle school (which is not much), the trees don’t actually die.
Neither does the Ivy….the leaves just fall off. I wasn’t insinuating that the tree’s ‘die’ every winter. A plant “dies” when it doesn’t leaf out in the spring. I feel like this should be common knowledge?
June 1st, 2011 at 11:59 AM

What am I wrong about? I see plenty of people that didn’t attend Alabama or Auburn that are die-hards.

Neither does the Ivy….the leaves just fall off. I wasn’t insinuating that the tree’s ‘die’ every winter. A plant “dies” when it doesn’t leaf out in the spring. I feel like this should be common knowledge?
Sportsgal corrected me on the ivy and as I understand your comment it sounded as though you were insinuating that the trees die.
I really never thought I’d be having a debate on the relative merits of a tree dying versus ivy dying, but blogfrica is an odd place….

I think you’re confusing a tree or ivy ‘dying’ with losing its leaves. Which has left me confused.
June 1st, 2011 at 12:03 PM
Thats all over the south. I find it hard to believe there are more Ohio State fans like this
I never said there were. I said there were a disproportionate number compared to other parts of the country, save for Alabama. I should have said “south” instead of Alabama I guess.
June 1st, 2011 at 12:04 PM

June 1st, 2011 at 12:05 PM
I think you’re confusing a tree or ivy ‘dying’ with losing its leaves. Which has left me confused.
I had originally thought that the ivy in Wrigley died every year and had to be replanted. SG pointed out that that was not true. So I was mistaken about that. But my original line of reasoning was that if you have two things dying, a tree is more significant than ivy as a tree takes longer to reproduce. Which I still hold to be true.
I never equated something losing it’s leaves with it dying. That’s actually what I thought you were doing.

Agreed Canadiens fans are pretty nuts, but I’m not sure they’ve actually rioted in a while. True they haven’t had much to riot about, but their level of fanaticism doesn’t reach these levels right now I don’t think.
June 1st, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Don’t have much time to read through the comments to see what has been said, but in Alabama, most fans did not attend the school. A lot of them have never even stepped foot on either campus. But there is nothing else to do in that state. They are often poor, poorly educated, and have been bred from day one to pick one side or the other.
June 1st, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Treebeard, now there’s a freaking tree impossible to dislike.
June 1st, 2011 at 12:09 PM

While I am a very passionate buckeye fan I would draw the line at a death threat. If someone is dumb enough to put that in writing and send it they are retarded. Everything written about free cars, tattoos, or anything else is true right now. The fanbase just has to take it until it blows over, threatening a person for doing their job won’t accomplish anything.

I’m just trying to play nice before tonight. Don’t want any reffing conspiracies to get out of hand, which is a concern because the gap between the two powerplays means people will be watching how many penalties get called and if it’s ‘rigged’ somehow.

June 1st, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Are we the worst, or does it just seem that way because your leader writer is a pretentious “Michigan Man” and you openly state your hatred for us?
Ohio State, like all fan-bases, has its fair share of idiots. Due to the large size of the school and state-wide support from people who have never even went here, I’m not surprised when people seem to think a majority of us are idiots.
There is a set of Ohio State fans which are classy, very funny, and super intelligent. Just because we don’t respond to your obvious troll attempts at traffic (see above) doesn’t mean we don’t exist. I guess we’re just too smart to get upset by your broad-brushed generalizations of people you clearly don’t know.

Wasn’t going to say it but…
And I’ve heard it here too, Cambell’s son plays for the Bruins, Bruins don’t want a special teams battle, so Campbell tells refs to not call anything.

Nothing is rigged until Vigneault bitches enough about calls to make it so. So, around Game 3 when the series is tied because Vancouver didn’t get a powerplay in Game 2.

I went to OSU when PSU played them 08. I thought the fans were nice people, and gracious in defeat.

Unless I’m packing some serious heat, there’s no way I’d want to be the first guy after Vitali to take that voyage.

I was wondering what took so long for Spencer to show up.
The most annoying fans I’ve ever been around are aTm fans, but I don’t have a lot of experience with the SEC gamedays.
