Some regiments still elected their officers for fixed periods of time. Others were appointed by army and corps commanders. It depended usually on rather the unit was Regular Army or a state raised militia (as many of them were). If you ever watched &#8220;Glory&#8221; it&#8217;s not a coincidence that they chose Matthew Broderick to play a Union Army colonel three years after he played a high school senior in &#8220;Ferris Bueller&#8217;s Day Off&#8221;.
