Dwight Howard Says He’d Rather Lead in Orlando Than Follow (Like LeBron*)
Dwight Howard held an impromptu picnic for fans in Orlando Monday – Howard picked up the tab for the food, parking and police – and the paper that was allegedly trying to run him out of town showed up and talked to the best center in the NBA about his future in O-Town.
“I’m not trying to run behind nobody like Shaq or be behind somebody else,”
“I want to start my own path and I want people to follow my path and not just follow somebody else’s path. I want to have my own path, and I want to start that here in Orlando. But I can’t do it alone. Not only do I need the right teammates, but I need the city behind me. That’s the only way it’s going to get done. We can change this small city that we have — this small market that we have — and we can make it a big market.”
The question I have about his first sentence … why not? You’re seeing the beginning of a dynasty in Miami because Chris Bosh followed LeBron to team up with Dwyane Wade last summer. The Celtics were savvy enough to trade for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen adding them to Paul Pierce to form a trio that went to the NBA Finals twice in three years. The Lakers only won back-to-back titles because they traded for Pau Gasol (heist!). If Howard doesn’t team up with another superstar or two, how can he possibly expect to beat the Heat in the next 3-4 years?
I admire Howard’s insistence on wanting to start “his own path,” but Orlando has regressed for two years. Finals in 2009, out in the 2nd round in 2010, out in the first round in 2011. I’m not sure how they can improve in the near future – not with a declining Hedo and a declining Arenas on the books at top dollar – and a decision must be made about streaky Jason Richardson this summer. Unless they can hoodwink the Nets or Hornets into trading them Deron Williams or Chris Paul (ha), how can the Magic get Howard a 2nd or 3rd elite player to compete with the Heat in the East?
Then again, maybe Howard’s been coached to say all of this because it sounds great to the public and he can blame the Magic for not getting him the necessary help.
Dwight Howard says his preference is to stay with the Orlando Magic and ‘start his own path’ [Sentinel]
* Obviously Howard didn’t mention LeBron’s name (though, as you saw above, he did mention Shaq), but that’s how I read it based on last summer’s shenanigans.

who knows what the NBA free agent contract will be like when he goes anywhere in 2012… too early to speculate until the labor dispute is settled.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:00 PM
blah blah blah.. He’ll be a Laker.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Here’s what I don’t get: why can’t Orlando make it happen? They got Dwight Howard (one of the top 5 players in the league). They’re in Florida (tax free state, great weather). And while they’re hampered with major contracts (Arenas, Turkoglu), they’ve a solid team that can contend every season.
So why not?

Westbrook and Ibaka for Howard.

Who exactly did Shaq run behind? He was the most dominant player in the league.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:05 PM
If not, the Lakers might be looking at the Nick Van Exel years again.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Wouldn’t it be following others past if two other elite player came to the Magic like Lebron and Bosh did with Wade?
May 31st, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Howard for mayor of orlando. LeDouche is an egomaniac punk. Howard is saying as much.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Yeah, but we made the Eastern Finals in 2010. Thank you.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:12 PM

yep. i mean, who the fuck would chose to stay in orlando?
May 31st, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Who exactly did Shaq run behind? He was the most dominant player in the league.
I inferred that Howard didn’t want to “run behind” the path already laid out by Shaq.

May 31st, 2011 at 12:15 PM
This. If he signs the rumored extension (as being reported today) He’s setting up for a trade during 2012 offseason, when the Magic will have plenty of expiring contracts to get rid of.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Westbrook, Harden, and Ibaka – then maybe.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Dirt got it.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Double negative! He’s definitely going to LA.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:19 PM
OKC would not do this deal.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:21 PM
why not? howard’s an upgrade over ibaka and him and durant would be lethal.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Westbrook, Harden, and Ibaka – then maybe.
And Perkins. For Howard and Arenas.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Because you have to keep either Harden or Westbrook. Some one has to operate with the ball.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Goddamnit, I hope Winnipeg gets the Jets name back. Considering they are paying $60 mil to relocate, the NHL should give it to the new team.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:22 PM
I’m not so sure. Harden and Ibaka are nice players, but not irreplaceable by any means. It would strike me similar to Chicago not trading for Kobe because they didn’t want to give up Deng (supposedly).
May 31st, 2011 at 12:23 PM
OKC is still in the mix to be the best in the west. Lakers and Dallas getting old in a hurry, so they probably think they are poised to be the successors. why gut your team when as of now, there is no reason to do so?
May 31st, 2011 at 12:24 PM
You get Jameer Nelson back. Or make do with a guy like Ray Felton or Andre Miller.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:24 PM
how is adding a top 5 player for a bunch of players that aren’t superstars gutting your team?
hardens and ibakas are pretty easy to find.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:25 PM
why gut your team when as of now, there is no reason to do so?
well, a lot of people think that there’s a reason to do so, since Westbrook doesn’t pass it to Durant, who then doesn’t get into position to score late.
So some people think there’s a reason. It’s the Harden part I’d be balking at, not the Westbrook part.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Goddamnit, I hope Winnipeg gets the Jets name back.
No-brainer if it was the Coyotes moving back. Not sure it makes sense given it’s the Thrashers.

While I don’t disagree with you (the West will be very wide open for the next decade), I don’t think giving up your PG and 2 role players for the best center in the league is a bad idea.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Because you have to keep either Harden or Westbrook. Some one has to operate with the ball.
Eric Maynor just waved off Chris Paul and Deron Williams. He’s got this.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:27 PM
I’m not sure Howard wins a title as the top player on his team. In the past 20 years, has a center besides Hakeem and Duncan won a title as the best player on his team without a prolific guard helping him out (and Duncan had some pretty good help, also)? Both of those guys were far more advanced offensively than Howard, and better defensively…
May 31st, 2011 at 12:27 PM
1. maynor, 2. cook, 3. durant, 4. collison, 5. dwight, with perkins/thabo/nazr/nate on the bench?
That team is winning 55 games very easily.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:27 PM
I don’t think we know the ceiling of Harden yet.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:27 PM
Westbrook is a superstar, and chemistry is not easy to find. Once Westbrook and durant get into a groove, OKC will be a bear. No need for Howard IMO.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Pick Curry over Harden, like they should have done all along?

May 31st, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Westbrook, Harden, and Ibaka – then maybe.
OKC would not do this deal.
They would trade Westbrook or Harden, but not both. And I think the choice would be Westbrook.
That said, why would Orlando take this deal? A backcourt of Westbrook and Arenas? A frontcourt of Hedo, Bass and Ibaka?
May 31st, 2011 at 12:28 PM
chemistry’s not easy to find between westbrook and durant on the court right now, brotha…
May 31st, 2011 at 12:28 PM
So he doesn’t want to make movies, rap albums, and win 4 rings?
He’s already doing movies and rap, all hes missing is the rings. Seems like the path isn’t exactly all that new.

Who they need is the Tyson Chandler the Mavs got — an athletic C that gets rebounds and doesn’t care about stats or shots. Too bad they turned that deal down.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:32 PM
I’m ashamed to admit I don’t get the reference.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Granted, but i think they’ll work it out.
And didn’t they already extend Perk? So I guess he would have to be included in a deal as well.

you say that, but watch how hard Dallas works to get that guy a dunk in the first couple of plays of the game. He plays all the time when he gets to dunk it a few times.
He’s also going to spend half this upcoming series about 15 feet from the basket, guarding Bosh.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:34 PM
I’m operating under the assumption that Howard ends up forcing the deal, though I don’t think he will.
The Lakers aren’t going to have a very attractive offer.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Dwight doesn’t strike me as a guy moving to OKC. Its Orl, NY, or LA, thats it. Maybe Dallas.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Perk isn’t that far off. Not as athletic on help defense, but just as tough and nasty, and good rebounder. Chandler is just a lot better offensively, and OKC doesn’t really need that. They could benefit from Ibaka developing a post game along with Durant though…
May 31st, 2011 at 12:35 PM
You don’t think Ibaka can get to that level? I like him.
he’s not any 7’1″, and most recently I saw him quit in the middle of a playoff game his team was winning. I like him too, but it took Chandler years and years to be as one dimensional as he is.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:36 PM
yea…this is true. pretty much makes the argument moot seeing as dwight’s got an ego to feed.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Actually he is coming to Phoenix. He sees it as the easiest way to be recognized as the greatest Center in a franchises history.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:37 PM
I don’t think he’ll be much of a post player per se. He seems to prefer, at least right now, hanging around for 15-ft jumpers like Bosh.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:37 PM
I think it depends on the direction Orlando want to take if he leaves. Blow it up or try and remain as competitive as possible. Bynum is probably the best center they can get in return for Dwight.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Perk isn’t that far off.
GTFO. That guy sucks, and his knees are worse than a street hooker’s. If the job was putting elbows into people’s grills, then yeah, he’s not that far off. But you don’t funnel anything to Perkins.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:37 PM
That’s a point I mentioned last week too, that can’t be ignored. Both PF’s (Bosh/Dirk) in this series will stretch the floor. Chandler can absolutely NOT guard Bosh though. If he doesn’t stay home to help on LeBron/Wade drives, it will be a massacre.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Durant reads the bible though…it’s a teammate Dwight can root for.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:38 PM
You don’t think Ibaka can get to that level? I like him.
They could benefit from Ibaka developing a post game along with Durant though…
+1 on both. I think Ibaka makes sense to the Thunder if he continues to grow and improve. It’s just that it’s going to take him a few years to get there — like it took Chandler tbh.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Howard and Durant wouldn’t be the all-star pair I would go for if I was OKC. Durant needs to develop a post game to punish smaller guys. Lane will be awfully crowded with D-Ho there. If D-Ho steps away from the lane, no need to cover = built-in double team. Then win a shitload of games, just not sure that’s the direction I would go.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:39 PM
This is correct. Perkins is an excellent post defender but terrible help defender. He was useless against the Mavs as the only guy he could defend (Chandler/Haywood) didn’t need defending.

Perk isn’t that far off.
GTFO. That guy sucks, and his knees are worse than a street hooker’s. If the job was putting elbows into people’s grills, then yeah, he’s not that far off. But you don’t funnel anything to Perkins.
Perk just got old fast. In fact that Perk-for-Green deal seems to have been the rare “Both teams lose” deal.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Perk with KG/Allen/Pierce/Rondo = 2007 title
Perk with Durant/Westbrook/Harden/Ibaka, with those guys all at their peaks and having some experience
It’s not the same teams, but I think you could win a title with those guys. OKC is all about trusting development of players, and that seems like a pretty good starting 5, especially if Harden keeps taking whatever he took in the Dallas series. Lets not let one series loss make us forget that Durant/Westbrook are really good. If I had them both, I’m betting on hoping they figure out how to feed off each other, instead of blowing it up.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Chandler can absolutely NOT guard Bosh though.
Chandler is good. Depends on the whistles, but Bosh can either shoot that contested 18 footer, or try to go around a guy who knows how to move his feet.
That’s not the matchup that worries me, rooting for Dallas.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Looks like Trey bolted. I think he’s in the bathroom throwing up.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I mean that Chandler CAN guard Bosh, but just SHOULDN’T. I don’t see how Dallas can win if they take their only plus interior defender and let him play 18 feet from the basket.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Looks like Trey bolted. I think he’s in the bathroom throwing up.
On Tuesdays he eats lunch at Arby’s, then shares needles with his client base.

No I’m here. Why would I be throwing up? Everything points to him staying…
May 31st, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Somewhat true. There is no Arby’s in downtown Orlando, I prefer to dine at its closest running mate, lunch today is at Captain D’s
May 31st, 2011 at 12:45 PM
1) if Perk’s knees really are done for the next few years and not just this year (big IF) then everything I said is invalidated
2) GC is absolutely right, that Perk does best matched up against centers like Howard/Bynum, and not roaming around. I don’t think that’s a useless skill, especially with a guy like Ibaka who can come over and block a shot.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Just look at the salaries Orlando is paying to players not named Dwight Howard. That should do the trick.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Good point.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Re: Bosh/Chandler, I think you have to play a really soft man, with lots of help and zone. If Miami is shooting well, Dallas is toast anyway, so you have to give them the shots, and stop the drive, and the zone is going to help that a lot (or at least a matchup zone focused on Bron, if Marion can stop him)
/he can’t
May 31st, 2011 at 12:49 PM
I don’t think that’s a useless skill,
with the way the league is officiated right now, that’s basically a useless skill. Put one guy in each corner, and let a speed demon take three steps and go right to the cup. There’s no bodies to bang in this league. It’s all about open lanes.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Because this appears to be setting context for him leaving:
If Dwight is staying, just say it. No need to put qualifiers on it. By doing that, it gives him an out.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Dwight Howard can end all debates by inking an extension.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Precisely why Chandler can’t be guarding Bosh one-on-one and Dallas will have to play a lot of zone.

Dallas will have to play a lot of zone.
have to? They’ll be ecstatic to play zone. Please, please, please Dwyane Wade, shoot that three ball.
But I think Chandler is definitely on the floor in crunch time, and guarding Bosh. unless he got fouled out. Steve Javie tonight though, no Bennett Salvatore or Danny Crawford.
May 31st, 2011 at 12:57 PM
That’s my point… I’m pretty sure we agree on that. Play zone, let Wade shoot. Unless he or LeBron is hot outside, they’ll be okay. I do think you keep Chandler home though, at least whenever possible. If I’m Dallas, I don’t want him chasing Bosh out of the paint.
/Go Mavs
May 31st, 2011 at 1:07 PM
Everyone kind of expects Dallas to play zone throughout the series, and they are still gigantic underdogs. So no, they won’t be okay even if one or both are not hot from outside.

I think it’s pretty even, honestly. And I hope for a whole lot of JJ Barea causing a ruckus against Mike Bibby. But every game will probably come down to the final minute. I just hope Dallas is in the penalty.

seems like a good bet. I think Dallas can win, and I’m rooting for them to, but I can understand why Miami is favored.
I just hope that Miami’s defense looked so good against Boston and Chicago because it was Boston and Chicago.
