Jim Tressel Resigns at Ohio State
Jim Tressel has resigned as head coach at Ohio State University, according to the Columbus Dispatch. This has been brewing for months, but I’m still surprised. According to the Dispatch, assistant coach Luke Fickell will serve as interim coach of the Buckeyes next season. (At which point they’ll hope to land Urban Meyer.)
The paper obtained a memo that President E. Gordon Gee sent to Trustees, and it reads:
“I write to let you know that later this morning we will be announcing the resignation of Jim Tressel as head coach of the University’s football program. As you all know, I appointed a special committee to analyze and provide advice to me regarding issues attendant to our football program. In consultation with the senior leadership of the University and the senior leadership of the Board, I have been actively reviewing the matter and have accepted Coach Tressel’s resignation.
Obviously there will be much, much more on this. If you’re wondering who the next Ohio State coach might be … Ty Duffy wrote about some options last month.

Live long and prosper in FCS, Jimmy.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
HELLO, URBAN MEYER!
wait until Duffy wakes up to this news …
May 30th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
will there be gnashing of teeth or a rapid wanking motion?
May 30th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
Is everybody happy now? You guys got your man.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:19 AM
I was wondering where everyone was…then clued in. Holiday.
Excuse my Canadian-ess.
PS, got a shiny nickel with a Beaver on it that says the Tressel story gets a 7 second read to camera here tonight. Stupid hockey.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:21 AM
I hope Jim speaks about why he did what he did
/or maybe I don’t
May 30th, 2011 at 9:22 AM
I’m happy that Tressel finally did the right thing since his employer didn’t have the balls to fire him.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:31 AM
You think Pryor and the other suspended Buckeyes wish they had not stayed for this year?
May 30th, 2011 at 9:37 AM
It’s rumored that in his upcoming presser Tressel will cite the unyielding pressure of Ty Duffy as the reason for his resignation.
Now, let’s start vacating some games and scholarships.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
and duct-taping the mouths of many OSU fans. It’s pathetic that OSU fans give more crap to Kirk Herbstreit for being honest than they do to Tressel for cheating and lying.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Being a Big TX fan, I never attained the hate that most on this site had for Ohio State and Sweatervest. However, he’s a fucking coward for resigning on Memorial Day. Thankfully, in this day and age, it won’t matter. Ty Duffy is on it.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Well, at least every one that comments here will be happy. A man who lied about tattoos has to resign. Sorry, but the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Still think the over-committing done in the SEC is way worse.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Salute the troops, Middle finger to Tressel!
May 30th, 2011 at 9:41 AM
Not until
Classy move to announce it on memorial day by the man with the american flag pin.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:41 AM
Cheating?
May 30th, 2011 at 9:43 AM
Yeah, they might vacate the wins over Penn State and Michigan. But we all know they kicked their a##.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
If you think he lied about just tattoos, you’ve been living in a hole in the ground.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Is everybody happy now? You guys got your man.
Quite. Thanks for asking.
Happy Memorial Day, folks!

//this land is my land
May 30th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Well, playing with ineligible players is a form of cheating, so yes.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
If you think he’s the scummiest coach in college football and deserved to resign over this than you too have been living in a hole in the ground
May 30th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
Sorry, but this has felt like a witch hunt all along. And ther are far worse witches to hunt
May 30th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
Or part of the elite 10% of fans Herbie loves so much.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
This. You all just seem so petty.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Isn’t one of the chapters of The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life about handling adversity?
May 30th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
or, the cheater got nailed.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
Still think the over-committing done in the SEC is way worse.
I don’t like that either. I would like the NCAA to make a ruling on that. But until then…
Ding-dong, Sweater Vest is dead! (his career at OSU)
May 30th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
i think they all cheat … only some get caught
May 30th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Coop,
How was game 7?
May 30th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Pete Seeger!
May 30th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Yeah, I got Herbie on speed dial.
I don’t condone what he did and I’m not saying he wasn’t wrong. My OSU colored glasses are clouding my thinking, but everyone’s else’s irrational hatred for OSU is also clouding theirs as well.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
If OSU and its fans didn’t act like they were the only football program that mattered, other people might not hate them as much
May 30th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Does someone want to explain to me how he cheated? Was he taping signals or stealing someones playbook. I’m pretty sure it was still 11 on 11 every Saturday.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
“If OSU and its fans didn’t act like they were the only football program that mattered, other people might not hate them as much”
So you’re glad Tressel resigned because you dislike OSU fans? You’re right though, OSU fans would be much better off if they just poisoned trees or something like that.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
Cheater already got nailed. Endgame didn’t have to be him losing the job. CJ gets it. But, it comes down to the bigger they are the harder they fall = best for the business? Happy Day, TBL…on to the next scalp.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
He knowingly played ineligible players.
/Cheating
May 30th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Would you rather Tressel stay and OSU gets penalized harder than USC or him leave and not lose as many scholarships?
May 30th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
I live in the state of NY. OSU fans and SEC football fans are equally irrational and insane.
May 30th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
Irrational? Lets say a tall, lanky, arm-punt type of player is considering OSU and PSU. He visits PSU, talks with current players and they say you have to go to class, break the rules and youll be in trouble. He visits OSU and players tell him that he can get cash, cars, tats, and its all cool, the coaches look the other way.
Guess which school he picks? Guess why I hate Jimmy the Cheat?
May 30th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
“Would you rather Tressel stay and OSU gets penalized harder than USC or him leave and not lose as many scholarships?”
It’s not about this. It’s about people acting like this guy murdered an entire family and their dog.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
THIS
Since they announced the players could play in the bowl game but would be suspended for the first 5 games next year and their pledge, you knew this day would come.
NOBODY is above the rules.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
I’m sure there is no preferential treatment to football players at PSU.

Anyone else watching the Gettysburg special on the History Channel tonight? Looks awesome.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Spencer, who do you want?
May 30th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Is it bad that it was the music got me into it initially?

Two National Guard sponsored cars lost the race on the last lap yesterday
May 30th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Anyone else watching the Gettysburg special on the History Channel tonight? Looks awesome.
I’ll be all over it.
Oh, and pretty cowardly move to resign on Memorial Day.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
Ha, Chief, the music got my attention too
May 30th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
Geezues, game 7 was pretty sweet. Not a great game, defensive struggle, but fun. The ridiculously heavy accents on drunk Boston hockey fans was hilarious.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
I am shocked that Tessel resigned over all this. Eventhough I despise OSU, the fact that a coach is responsible for his players trading Big 10 memerobilia for tattoos is just silly. Who really cares
May 30th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Next time you’re at work, go cover up for someone when they steal from your employer. Lie about it! See if your boss doesn’t care.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
So whats the status of the supplemental draft? I dont think there has been one, and dont know if there will be. Have to think the Tat5 would consider jumping if it were an option, as well as maybe a few other guys.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Paterno outlasts another one.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
You really don’t think there’s something bigger here?
The UFL is drooling at this news.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Coach Tressel, meet LeBron James, LeBron James, this is Coach Tressel. Why don’t you two discuss internet fed irrational hatred and outrage leading to a thirsty lust of blood.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Good God are people gullible when it comes to Whitlock “reports”. He does it all the time, and people still believe Lloyd Carr as DC, and Rich Rodriguez at OC.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Chief – You mean his Twitter stuff?
May 30th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Yea, Hawkeye. Most joke around with him, but then you find the few that actually believe it.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
He’s so bored and lazy that he does it just so people will react and he can call them “Palinites”. Just go away forever.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
Only thing his Twitter account has shown me is that he’s become a joke. Ever since his “The Explanation”, Whitlock’s gone farther and farther off the reservation.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Now, let’s start vacating some games and scholarships.
I guess that’s the only way anyone else in the big ten will win a championship. I hope Jopa dies of a stroke.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
My roommate from Columbus is a happy man today. He’s very excited about the possibility of landing Urban Meyer. When I asked him if he’ll be so excited when the sanctions hit, he told me to get fucked, so it’s an emotional day for us all.
May 30th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Then he’s going to be pretty fucking disappointed
May 30th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Once in a while I agree with Cowherd. He hit it on the head today on twitter: “@espn_colin: Urban Meyer will wait to see what kind of knockout punch is handed down. He doesn’t need OSU–they need him. He could get hired anywhere.”
May 30th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
I knew Tressel would be gone the day the free car article came out. I only hope Fickell can have a good showing so he gets a chance to coach when tOSU brings in a new coach next year. Maybe after the punishment there can be a real offensive line coach in town. At least Tressell didn’t kill anybody, and his players didn’t rape anybody, that we know of. Looking at YOU Notre Dame.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Tressel should have been fired. But anybody who believes their school doesn’t operate on the shady side of the street is pretty delusional too.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
What’s wrong with you? I mean, besides the obvious.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Not sure I understand your analogy to stealing
May 30th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
Going to be interesting to see if Meyer accepts the gig. I tend to think he won’t. Will TBL and Duffy nail this search like they did the Michigan one?
May 30th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Pretty sure thats a requirement of being a college football fans. I’m quite comfortable with my delusions.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
I find it amusing that despite how cliched it’s become, people still don’t understand “it’s not the crime, it’s the coverup”. I don’t think Tressel is any worse than any other college coaches, but he fucked up big time by lying to the NCAA, and worse, making it easy to prove he lied. I guess you can say it sucks for him to have to resign when the underlying violation seems so minor, but he got what he deserved.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
If someone steals, you know about it, and you lie to employer about it when they ask you, you’re just as guilty as the person who stole. Coverup is what this is all about.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Tressel to Illinois in 2012.
May 30th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Tressel is a piece of shit for doing this today. Way to tuck your tale between your legs and slip out the back door when nobody is looking. Shows his lack of integrity.
May 30th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Who stole something? It seems more like this…
May 30th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
this
May 30th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
It’s pathetic that OSU fans give more crap to Kirk Herbstreit for being honest than they do to Tressel for cheating and lying.

Give ya 3 cents for it…
/late but had to be said.
In the span of a year, the Chancellor (Gee) and Dean of Medicine (Gabbe) both left Vandy for OSU. In as politically correct terms as possible as to not jeopardize my career… to say the least, we survived.
