Dan LeBatard Thinks Derrick Rose Urinated on Himself; Ric Bucher Disagrees
ESPN’s Ric Bucher went on Dan LeBatard’s radio show Friday and the two had an interesting conversation about Derrick Rose. I’ll preface the rest with this: LeBatard is being (hilariously) insufferable about the Miami Heat playoff run. He’s greatly enjoying this impending dynasty and mocking media members throughout the country, as you’ll see in the videos below.
[On another radio show, Bucher actually compared Rose's struggles at the end of game four - remember those two misses against LeBron in the final minute? - to Kobe Bryant's airballs against the Utah Jazz when Kobe was an 18 year-old rookie, started only six games during the regular season, and averaged 7.6 points a game. Rose, mind you, was the NBA's MVP this year. I'll defend Derrick Rose, who I think is a great player ... but that comparison is batshit crazy.]
From LeBatard’s radio spot with Bucher, which is extremely contentious at times:
LeBatard: He did everything but throw up on the front of his jersey …
Bucher: Look, he missed a clutch free throw … but considering everything, I don’t think there was a lot of difference between game five and game four …
LeBatard: He made a lot of fouls, every big shot was made in his face, and he had turnovers at the end and he missed a free throw. What else would he have had to have done for you to believe he hadn’t played well at the end? Urinate on himself?
Bucher: Uh, are we really having … I’m not sure why you asked me on … are we having a conservation, or are we making a joke of this?
LeBatard: [tries to saves the interview, asks the question in a less antagonistic manner]
Bucher: I didn’t think he threw up on his jersey and I didn’t think he urinated on himself.
a few questions later …
Jon “Stugotz” Weiner (co-host): “You haven’t like LeBron for a long time, why should we take you seriously?”
Bucher: “You’re the one who called me, I didn’t ask to come on the show.”
Bucher’s sticking to his guns here and actually comes off somewhat clueless about the NBA (fwiw, I’ve been a long-time fan). A reader noted that Bucher sounded similarly nuts on a recent Bill Simmons podcast, but I haven’t heard it yet. When you factor in the Dwight Howard incident … it’s been a tough postseason for Ric Bucher.
How much fun is LeBatard having with the Heat run? Witness (the Sammy Sosa part is hilarious):
I don’t think that one was as funny as the original, which made for epic radio after LeBron and Bosh signed with the Heat:

I like Bucher, but him saying he’d start a franchise over Lebron is a little bit too out there. Rose is a good player, but he’s not that good yet. Lebron’s only 26 and the most complete player in the game. Granted, Rose is going to be a beast in the years to come, but Lebron still has atleast 6 good years left in him before his skills start declining so he has a long way to go.
On another note, Pippen is a moron for saying Lebron could be better than MJ. Forget the rings, Lebron’s individual accolades don’t hold a jockstrap to MJ’s at the same age, its just really hard to match. Lebron is the best player of his generation’s stars (i.e – from Wade, Melo, Howard, etc) but I wouldn’t even pick him now over 2006 or 2007 Kobe, let alone MJ.

Bucher is under the delusion that he’s the god of basketball or something. Here’s him talking about Cowherd. Hilarious.
“I’m a big fan of Colin’s and believe he is fantastic at what he does. He knows a lot of things. One of them is not the NBA, other than on a cursory level.”

Are you a journalist, TBL? I saw the same thing on CNN.com the other day. Someone described a situation one way, and then the ‘writer’ thought it would be great to make up a similar meaning quote and make it appear like they said that.
This writer made up a quote, led with it, made it sounds like NASA said it, and only after that explained what they actually said. I have no problem with interpretation in an article, but to blatantly re-write someone’s words to get more hits on your article is absolutely disgusting.
And I don’t think TBL here is acting as egregiously as some guy named Craig Johnson on CNN, but it seems to be a trend, and is starting to drive me away from any sensationalist news. This whole clickocracy trend is pissing me off…

I guess here, the defense is that a lot of headlines are actually tongue-in-cheek and not meant to report a story or be taken literally. That’s fine, but let’s be okay with calling thebiglead.com a tabloid/blog, and stop with the ‘website’ crap.

Really testy interview.

Bucher made an excellent point in the podcast, which is, people complain about those who defend Rose by saying that if he wins, it was cause he’s great, and if he loses, its cause of the supporting cast. Bucher lays it on LeBatard by saying that its the same exact argument that people made for Lebron James every single year, which is true.

LeBatard is GREAT radio. When I disagree with someone and still am entertained, that’s great radio.
In other news, I was unfollowed and blocked by Sportsbybrooks this weekend. He follows 5,000 people. Hysterical.

Yes… though Rose clearly has better supporting cast than LeBron ever had, or is that revisionist on my part?
I’ll never understanding giving Boozer the max, when the past 10 years have all gone the way of the perimeter player. The last team that thought it would be great to go big when everyone was going small? The Eddy Curry Knicks…

Crashing on the last turn???? damn

I’ve always said the media and alot of people on here are personality whores. I think that’s what LeBatard was trying to get at without actually saying it. People are bending over backwards to explain away Rose’s performance because he’s “humble”, a “nice guy”. If Allan Iverson had that level of performance back in the day or LeBron this year, does anyone honestly think they’d receive similar treatment with the kid gloves? In the NBA more than anywhere else, analysis of players and play from the media and fans is more subjective than objective.

If a player coming into the league is said to have the skill set of a combination of Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, and by the end of his career he fulfills that evaluation at an all time great level, he would definitely be in the small list of consideration of all time great. All of this reaction to what Pippen said is unreal. I heard some idiot reporter say what Pippen had to say has no merit. Now I have an understanding of what Roger Maris and Hank Aaron had to go through chasing Ruth’s records.

Bucher brought this on himself when he said he’d take rose over lebron. That’s just an asinine statement to make after 4 games were played in this series.

I listened to Lebatard’s show since the day it started, but I had to stop listening with all this Heat idolatry.
I hope to come back in the fall.
