Steven Stamkos Takes A Puck To The Face
It’s a Game 7 with a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals on the line so that means you give everything you’ve got. You sacrifice your body and do whatever it takes to win. All those fun cliches. Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos did all of that as he took a Johnny Boychuck shot to directly to the face tonight. He immediately left the ice with a bloody face but came back with a new cage face mask later in the period.
And here’s how he looks now. That’s not a beauty mark.

Fortunate he was wearing a half shield, looks like it took a little bit of the blow.
May 27th, 2011 at 9:53 PM
Here’s a pic of his face.
May 27th, 2011 at 9:54 PM
Gross gross gross it looks wide open.. hope they can stitch that up between periods
May 27th, 2011 at 9:54 PM
One less inch of face shield, and he’s Bryce Florie
May 27th, 2011 at 9:57 PM
Coming back from that is nice but the best part was that he got up off the ice and skated to the bench while trying to hold the blood in without any assistance from the trainers. Hockey players are a special breed.
May 27th, 2011 at 9:58 PM
I can’t believe Leo Racicot is still alive.
May 27th, 2011 at 9:59 PM
Yeah. Hockey players are a special kind of crazy.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:00 PM
Geeez, where’s that cap from so I can credit them.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:01 PM
CRM, it’s from Puck Daddy.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:05 PM
Also, full cage = great idea
May 27th, 2011 at 10:06 PM
It took the 3rd period, but I’m finally watching this. Already seen so many close chances for Boston.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:07 PM
I’m still amazed that goalies didn’t wear a facemask until the 50s/60s. That is batshit crazy.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:07 PM

It’s been put to the players (which I know you know), they’ve declined in the name of personal preference. I wouldn’t object to mandatory half shields like the AHL has done.

Crazy, but also a different game. Straight (wooden) sticks, players respected the goalies enough to avoid delivering sweet chin music too often.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:09 PM
They should wear half-shields with cages below. It’s not like they’re drinking coffee between shifts. Safety first.

Speaking of people not protecting themselves from flying projectiles: Goalies in Gaelic hurling not wearing helmets. Here’s the best part of that story:
“To wit: In 1997, goalkeeper Joe Quaid shattered one testicle, and had to have half of the second removed, when he took a ball to the crotch on a penalty shot. Upon recovery he returned to the sport, and continued playing as a goalie for three more seasons.”
The Irish, ladies and gents!

Gerry Cheevers (sp) was one of the first to wear a mask – he used to put stitches on his mask at the spot it got hit with a shot
May 27th, 2011 at 10:13 PM
Batshit crazy may be an understatement.
My son took at least six shots off the cage this year and a few high-sticks. He’s 13 and has already said he’s never playing without one. Won’t even play shinny on outdoor rinks without it.

Linkage, classic mask.

I was going to say something in that nature, but I was too drunk and lazy to do so.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:15 PM
my hockey career was short and unspectacular, but Id never play without a full cage. People could call me a pussy all day but I wouldn’t want to catch a puck to the chops
May 27th, 2011 at 10:16 PM
Everybody here is feeling OT, possibly multiple ones, right? Again, I’ve just watched the 3rd so far, but that’s what I’m getting.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:17 PM
Full cages also prevent people from skating over your face if you ever end up lying on the ice for some reason.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:17 PM
I played junior/university with a half shield, still wear it for Sunday pick-up games.

Havent seen these teams much but they both look better than the Preds. I love the Preds and hope they can keep improving, but it’s pretty clear watching other games that they really are a good team, and not a great team.
On another note I was randomly got in the mail a small hockey stick autographed by Pekka Rinne… apparently some promotion with the car I just bought. Now I need to figure out if it can go on the wall, because only Championship newspapers/SIs get on the wall

There hasnt been a single penalty called yet has there? Awesome.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:18 PM
It’s ok. I feel like a pussy sometimes because I played street hockey during my school days. I didn’t want my parents to be poor.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:21 PM
I never played organized hockey, so no full pads or helmets. Just kneepads/shin guards. Skipped study hall to go to the park downtown, where the basketball court was frozen over, and a chain link fence and snowbanks were boards. Wasn’t a lot of blocking shots in those games, but the worst injury I remember anyone getting was my torn labrum.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:22 PM
Colby Armstrong is an entertaining Twitter follow if you like hockey.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:23 PM
David Stern needs to be taking notes. This game is almost too fast to follow. Can’t believe this facebook status…

Agreed CJ, officials are at their best when we don’t notice them. Hope it doesn’t come down to one of those ridiculous puck over the glass delay of game penalties.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:25 PM
Haha. I love Colby. Although he started a trend that made Pens fans outraged when King Shero traded away average players

This pretty much invalidates everything I’ve ever said in defense of Michigan. Fuck, maybe I should just move to Ohio.

GOOOOOOOAL
May 27th, 2011 at 10:28 PM
Damn. That was pretty.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:28 PM
Damn, Horton has some important goals for the Bruins in these playoffs.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:28 PM
Beautiful clean goal. Let’s see if it holds up.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:29 PM
That pass to Horton was a beauty.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:31 PM
Oh God Stamkos’ nose looks the same
May 27th, 2011 at 10:32 PM
I’m think St Louis saves the day here and we still get O/T
May 27th, 2011 at 10:32 PM
Jesus. Thinking

Garland,
Congrats on the extra second round pick.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:43 PM
Woooooohooo! Bruins in the Finals. Hell yes.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:43 PM
Shit. At least the Leafs get a 2nd round pick out of this.
I hoped it would never come to me cheering for the Canucks but here we are.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:45 PM
Bruins D was beastly in those last 10 minutes. Tampa couldn’t get anything going down low or even keep the puck in the Boston zone for more than a couple seconds it seemed.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:46 PM
I wish I could put my finger on why I hate Tim Thomas. Seems totally irrational, which is unlike me. Having said that, fuck that guy.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:49 PM
How about this?
May 27th, 2011 at 10:49 PM
The Minnesota Twins bullpen is going to make me cry myself to sleep one night this year. And I think it’s going to be tonight.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:51 PM
I wish I could put my finger on why I hate Tim Thomas.
We both know why.

May 27th, 2011 at 10:51 PM
How in the hell can you dislike Tim Thomas? Jesus. As you said, irrational.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:52 PM
imagine how popular the NHL would be if they had good marketing
May 27th, 2011 at 10:53 PM
Nope. I’sn’t from tonight, but THIS will suffice.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:53 PM
Irrational, or Canadian. These next few weeks, I have a feeling its gonna be USA v Canada in here.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:53 PM
also: woo hoo for an extra pick!
May 27th, 2011 at 10:54 PM
These next few weeks, I have a feeling its gonna be USA v Canada in here.
Not from me, Bruins have a higher Canadian content. And the Canucks? Well fuck the Canucks.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:55 PM
wow it’s not goodell on the front page anymore.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:55 PM
I highly doubt it. Maybe on the American side.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:55 PM
I’m probably rooting for the Canucks. Would like to see em picked over in free agency and have to go through the dreaded “hangover.”
May 27th, 2011 at 10:56 PM
How many Canadians do we have on here, exactly? I mean, there’s ‘Zeus and Garland. I known there are others but it’s 4:56 am where I am so forgive me for forgetting them.
May 27th, 2011 at 10:59 PM
Well Don,
I’m pretty the Bolts are pissed no penalties were called since the Boston PP is anemic and theirs is awesome.
May 27th, 2011 at 11:02 PM

Did SC show up today? Or is he still pouting about the re-design.
