Friday Flashbacks: Heysel Stadium Disaster
Twenty-six years ago, on May 29, 1985, hooligan Liverpool supporters broke down a fence separating them from Juventus supporters before the start of European Cup Final, setting off a riot that ultimately resulted in 39 deaths, and changed English football. The FA immediately announced a one year ban on English teams participating in European competitions. Not satisfied, UEFA announced a ban of indeterminate length (it would ultimately be five years before English clubs returned).

The Great One-along with Barry Melrose’s sweet mullet-reaches the Stanley Cup Finals
18 years and Leafs fans still haven’t forgiven Kerry Fraser.

Are Sports Stadiums worth the cost? (1976
In that article I learned that the Kingdome in Seattle had a $37 million cost overage. Where that extra $37 million went I could not even begin to guess.

What is English Football?
Damn, the Casey Martin case wast 10 years ago? Wonder what happened to that guy.
May 27th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
I always like these.
Just scored a single Bruins ticket for 170, absolute steal. Game 7, fuck yeah.
May 27th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
Fuck, time is moving soooo slow today. I would have taken a half day today, but of course two people more senior to me took the entire day off.
May 27th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
Saying it now and repeating it til Tuesday,
a NINE PM EASTERN start for game 1 of the finals in MIAMI is FUCKING RETARDED!
May 27th, 2011 at 4:53 PM
That’s awesome coop, should be a great game.

Couldn’t make it as a golfer, opened a chauffeur company.
/going to hell.
//according to Wikipedia he’s the head golf coach at University of Oregon now.
May 27th, 2011 at 4:54 PM
Google is a beautiful thing.
“In May 2006, Martin was named head coach of the University of Oregon’s men’s golf team in his hometown of Eugene.”
What do you think a Division 1 golf coach makes? That has to be a sweet gig, right?
May 27th, 2011 at 4:55 PM
More concrete.
May 27th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
Good seats? Is the beer free?
/Still can’t bring myself to pay more that $100 for a ticket to anything when I have an awesome TV and chair at home.

Nice, bet the Garden is going to be electric.
May 27th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
Fuck Barry Melrose and ESPN. Nothing like having a guy who openly disdains college hockey be lead analyst and commentator at the Frozen Four.

Gotta make sure those hippies on the West Coast are home from work before the game starts.
May 27th, 2011 at 5:02 PM
yup, because the west coast is very interested in teams from Dallas and Miami when there’s no lakers in the mix.
May 27th, 2011 at 5:04 PM
Fuck Barry Melrose
I’m continually amazed that a guy with a career coaching record of 84-108-29 (he had a modest playing career as well) into his current gig at ESPN. There is a reason why no one hired* him after he was fired by the Kings.
*Even the idiots running the Lightning axed him after 16 games.
May 27th, 2011 at 5:07 PM
i like how quickly he made it back on ESPN after he got fired. It was like he took a short vacation instead of getting hired then fired from a coaching job.
May 27th, 2011 at 5:07 PM
True. Even if it causes those babies on the East Coast to stay up past their bedtime.

The NBA! It’s faaaaaaannnnntastically retarded!

Have you seen his tan and his mullet?
May 27th, 2011 at 5:09 PM
Some of us are…I end up DVR’ing the game anyway. Fuck pregame. Fuck commercials. Fuck halftime.
/Fuck free throws too
May 27th, 2011 at 5:10 PM
yup, because the west coast is very interested in teams from Dallas and Miami when there’s no lakers in the mix.
Well, with that logic, they should only air the game within the city-limits of Dallas and Miami.

seriously, time to change the scrolling posts on the front page.
those posts were OK, thought there were better ones today that are you know, current.

Having a personality and at the same time being competent enough to talk into a camera shouldn’t be understated. Lots of guys can’t do it. Exhibit A: Magic Johnson.
May 27th, 2011 at 5:13 PM
yup, i could get behind that.
i just hate networks dictating start times of games. 30 minutes earlier won’t kill their ad revenue measurements.

OK? OK? Just for that, you get two more days of Payton’s gluts in yo face.

Don’t ruin my narrative, he tried his best to ruin some of the prime years of Gretzky’s career and I still hold a grudge.

I did a little mock up in Adobe to clean this mess up — assuming everything gets bumped into the white space on top.
Just way too much noise on the front page now.
May 27th, 2011 at 5:18 PM
Can they please? I, for one, have zero interest in this finals. I’ll just turn on espn, they’ll be playing clips and quotes 24/7 until the series is over, nothing else is going to matter.
May 27th, 2011 at 5:20 PM
Now was that so hard to come up with? No, it really wasn’t. Brilliant, this would look infinity times better.

I like.

They also have to put a larger space in between the TBL posts and the junk that is rest of the BLS network below.
/we know everyone comes for the comments…you want to keep a clear division.
May 27th, 2011 at 5:34 PM
How about having him cover and provide analysis for college hockey which he distains?
May 27th, 2011 at 5:37 PM
Never Forget!!! Ruined my one and only chance to see a Leafs vs Canadiens SCF.
