Why Didn’t the Lakers Consult Kobe Bryant on the Hiring of Mike Brown?
A collection of Kobe Bryant reaction to the hiring of Mike Brown:
- Ric Bucher, Wednesday morning: Kobe publicly endorsed Brian Shaw; was in favor of “Adelman or Van Gundy.”
- Chris Broussard, Wednesday afternoon: “Kobe is on board with the hire.”
- Broderick Turner and Mike Bresnahan, LA Times, Wednesday night: Kobe had “no comment.”
- Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo, Thursday morning: The Lakers didn’t consult Kobe. (Also, Lakers’ VP Jim Buss gets torn apart. It’s great.)
Ingesting all those links, especially the last one, it seems like Jim Buss is going to call the shots as he sees fit, and he plans on building around Andrew Bynum and Mike Brown. Everyone else – well, I can’t see them trading Kobe – is for sale.
I’d be leery building around an injury-prone center, but hey, what do I know. Bynum’s been in the league for six years and he’s never played more than 65 games in a season. If the Lakers can get Dwight Howard for Bynum, they should do it in a heartbeat. I’d think long and hard about a Bynum-for-Chris Paul trade due to his shaky knees … but if you make that move and somehow keep Gasol and Odom, I’ve got no problem with it.
Jim Buss definitely has a challenging few years ahead of him with this fossil-rific core.
Since you care, Bill Plaschke hates the hire.

hard contract to trade. Why would the Lakers consult Kobe? I am sure they talked it over with Vanessa.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Whoa…as in this Mike Brown?
/safe
May 26th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
needs more Jeanie Buss.

Bynum also has more trade value of the Lakers say he’s their keystone player for the future. if they go out there and say Bynum will be shopped around, they will likely get less value for him.
you know how the media reacts to this stuff, soon they’ll have ESPN segments of Bynum highlights saying how he’s the best young, underrated player in the game, etc.

Yea, Lets consult with the rapist.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
I’d think long and hard about a Bynum-for-Chris Paul trade
My jaw just fell off when I read this. Are Chris Paul’s knee problems 100x worse than Bynum’s? Because if they are this is about an even trade. Otherwise, I’ll use my favorite Kobe quote about Bynum: “Ship his ass out.”
May 26th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Why would they consult a player who might act out of self-interest instead of the interest of the franchise? Especially if Jim Buss believes that Kobe is closer to the end of his career than the beginning.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
whoa. Obama goin’ in!

Yea, Lets consult with the rapist.
I bet you refer to the Patriots as Cheaters, right?

Wow. I actually agree with Bill. Mike Brown is an awful coach. Horrible with personnel and adjustments. An absolutely brutal coach in the playoffs and offensively retarded. Good hire.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
When Kobe stops playing and becomes an executive, he’ll have the right to be consulted. Until then, STFU and play.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I’m just glad to see he still lives after Game 4
May 26th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Huh?
May 26th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
Did they ask that smokeshow executive assistant/cougar that was on Age of Love?
May 26th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
Cant Wait.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
is that like “kobe doin’ work”?
May 26th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
whoa. Obama goin’ in!
Are you watching coverage of the G8 summit or are you talking about the commenter? BTW, much bigger story on Yahoo! right now
May 26th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
Just not true. How he had that Cavs team with slow/mediocre defensive guys playing elite defense is a true testament to his powers (they won 66 games! the guy got more effort out of his players than any other coach) – this year’s Heat didn’t come anywhere close to 66 wins. And the adjustments angle is always a battlecry of those those that put the least amount of thought possible into their analysis.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
I apologize in advance for my ignorance on this subject, but did they really need to pay him 18 mil over 4 years? that seems pretty pricey for a coach with 0 titles, and not a whole lot on his resume besides coaching LeBron.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
No photos in cowboy garb? For shame Yahoo
May 26th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
but if you make that move and somehow keep Gasol and Odom,
I think I figured out a way to get Bonds and Griffey, without having to give up that much!!
May 26th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
The Buss’ own the team, that’s why not. They can do whatever they want with the Lakers. If they wanted to ask Jack Nicholson’s advice instead of Kobe that is their perogative.
/I can do what I wannna doooooooooooo

I think I figured out a way to get Bonds and Griffey, without having to give up that much!!
Does it actually save money?
May 26th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
This is soooooo tired, give it up. This year’s Heat won 58 fucking games, that’s only 8 games less than 66. You make it sound like they won 40-something games. Mike Brown won 66 games in Cleveland with LeBron James and the benefit of playing in the Leastern Conference.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?! He had 30 home runs and over 100 RBIs last year. He’s got a rocket for an arm. You don’t know what the hell you’re doin’
May 26th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
dude, that’s like 10%. that’s not insubstantial.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Kobe is going to Chicago. You heard it here first. He’s outta LA.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
It’s also not as big a deal as he’s making it out to be. The Heat also had to integrate LBJ and Bosh into Wade’s team and all those shitty “role” players they had. Finishing wiht 58 wins and the #2 seed in your first year together like that is pretty impressive.
/goes to throw up now after talking good about the heat in back to back comment
May 26th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
*This comment subject to change if Kobe tells me otherwise.

Yeah, I can’t lie. That was the main reason I clicked on the story. The idea of Bradley playing Obama one-on-one makes me giggle, though.

Probably my favorite exchange of the entire show

It would be great if he ran for office and his opponent ran a mudslinging ad with most of the footage being him dunked on. With the ‘generic political commercial narrator’ guy saying things like: “This is the man YOU want to be elected senator?”
May 26th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
So, closer to Jordan’s 72 than it was to the Heat’s 58. Ha
May 26th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
I should have consulted with him
May 26th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
wtf? so they had to integrate two all-star players? what a trooper.
mike brown won 66 games despite a HUGE roster makeover halfway through the season in a similar eastern conference that was probably a little stronger last year than it is this year.
not seeing how that makes mike brown shitty but to each his own.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Damn, Spence is dominating.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
I will never understand the Mike Brown apologist from Cursed and LeBR
May 26th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
I will never understand the Mike Brown apologist from Cursed and LeBron hate from him when he was in Cleveland. I mean he blocked the ball too much!!!
May 26th, 2011 at 1:32 PM
I concur.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
The same reason all the dinosaurs died out.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:36 PM
As he should, I don’t know shit about the Cavs! haha
May 26th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
Jim Buss is trying to get out from under Daddy’s shadow (he von’t be pushed around) and he is going to alienate Kobe and fuck this team up worse than it already is…..
oh yeah, enjoy Game 5 Obama, Chicago new “regular season Champs!”
May 26th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Jim Buss situation kinda reminds me of when Jerry Krause was tryna push MJ, Phil and Scottie out of Chicago.
May 26th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
Yeah, this is a rocky start.
May 26th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
Not that I love the hire, but Plaschke is down on everything, guy is such a negative prick, can’t take him too seriously, it’s a continuing theme.
May 26th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
Because he isnt entitled to be consulted with.
May 26th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
kobe has a no-trade clause, so he still wields all the power. and his history of quitting is a lot more substantial than lebron’s. it’s going to be rough ride to irrelevancy for the lakers. jim buss is a clown.
May 26th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
What’s with all this misguided outrage towards Kobe? What exactly did he do wrong here? Because columnists are writing about him, Kobe should STFU and play?
And yeah, it’s a bad idea to consult the employees (especially the fuckin face of your franchise) on who their boss is going to be because it’s not like they’re the ones who will be working with them or anything.
