Video: Buster Posey’s Gruesome Injury
Buster Posey got trucked at home plate in the 12th inning last night by Florida’s Scott Cousins, and if you keep an eye on Posey’s ankle, well, you’ll end up cringing.
Ankles aren’t supposed to bend that way. Posey got x-rays after the game, and there should be an update later today. Miguel Tejada called the injury scary, and said “right now he’s the last guy we want to lose.” Posey was the 2010 NL Rookie of the year, and he’s currently 2nd on the Giants in batting average (.284) and RBI (21). Someone hold me.

*held*
May 26th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Geez…..Buster Onley tweeted something this morning about Posey’s agent talking to MLB about changing the rules for catcher collisions at home.
Don’t turn MLB into the NFL. It’s unfortunate that this happened to Posey, but lets not go changing shit.
May 26th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
It may earn me a soft reputation, but if I’m a catcher, I’m leaving a path to home plate and making a swipe tag on guys. Getting trucked in a worthless regular season game is all risk, little reward.
May 26th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
the mentality of a catcher is a tough one. nobody would try this, man
May 26th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
F that reputation. I refuse to play the infield in softball because I don’t want that shit taking a bad hop and busting me in the grill.
Had a guy I know lose an eye while playing pitcher. Took a line drive straight to the face and *pop*, out comes his eye. I’m just glad I wasn’t there to see it.

Jesus. In Rec League softball? That’s a tough break for that guy.
May 26th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
OK Roger Dorn
/Look, I took one of those in the eye last year, and I am not about to lose my sight!
May 26th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
When Rod Barajas played the Phils, he did something like and earned a lot of fan scorn in the process.
I can’t say I disagree with the sentiment you have on this, but it is ingrained in the game pretty heavily. I think there are ways of blocking the plate that don’t make you so vulnerable (that said, I was smart enough to never try catching). It looked, from that video, like Posey knew he was going to get blasted.
May 26th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
no shit. I pitched a couple times last year and probably had 3 come-backers, which I somehow caught. it was more instinct/reaction more than anything, but I was terrified each time. if I am playing infield, especially 3B, I am playing edge off the grass.
they had mike and mike on at the gym this morning and showed Posey getting trucked probably a dozen times in a row. pretty unnecessary if you ask me. once is plenty.
May 26th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Yep. Then again, there are too many assholes who use illegal bats and all that other shit in rec league games. It’s softball, you clown. Quit trying to mash an underhanded pitch because you couldn’t make the high school team.
I used to love to play rec sports. Football, softball, etc…..but somewhere over the last five years, it’s all been infiltrated by these bulky, cookie cutter facial hair, TapOut wearing douche bags who have to piss and moan about everything. Am I the only one that has this problem?
I miss playing, but it’s not worth the hassle.
/ends rant

Robin Ventura’s ankle is unimpressed
May 26th, 2011 at 9:58 AM

Uhh…don’t block the plate?
May 26th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
Dottie Hinson thinks you are all pussies
May 26th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
I feel like I shouldn’t watch this while eating my Jimmy Dean D-Light.
May 26th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
He wasn’t in a good position, being on his knees rather than on his feet. He also wasn’t really blocking the plate very well. Cousins easily could have avoided him with a slide. It wasn’t dirty. Just a hard, not very nice choice.
May 26th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
So is Jason Kendall’s
/fuck Jason Kendall
May 26th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
I thought the whole point of those leagues was to have something to do before you go to the local bar?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
Bitch couldn’t even hold on to the fucking ball, maybe if she’d gone for the swipe tag her team (which she had previously quit on mind you) would have been champs but instead they lost to Tea Leoni’s club
May 26th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
Anyone ever tell you that you look like a little penis with a hat on?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
I’m sure Carlos Santana will back Posey up on this. I find this move despicable and do want it banned.
/pours one out for Posey on my fantasy team

caught my entire life, from little league through college. i’ve been plowed, legally and illegally, several times. it wasn’t until playing in a men’s semi-pro wooden bat league a few years after college when i was trucked at home plate and tore every ligament in my knee. as bad as that sucked, i’d never take it back. always block the plate and HOLD ON TO THE BALL.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
Me too. Buncha wanna be Bonds’ in KC.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
Yes. All of this. She ditched the team when her man came back. That is NOT dedication. I’m surprised Jimmy Dugan even allowed for her return.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
Do you want the runner to like, turn around and go back to third when the plate is blocked?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
The loss of Marla Hooch really derailed that team.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
buster olney — likely under the edicts of the CCCP party members he works for at disney — is absurdly overreacting on twitter claiming baseball should ban blocking the plate.
why? one injury in may after over a hundred years of baseball?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Basketball and Squash are still games played by gentlemen. I’m doing a sculling class for the first time this summer, pumped.

No… I’ve found I’ve had much more fun in co-ed softball leagues. There’s still the occasional asshole who takes it way too seriously, but most of the people there are there for a good time more than anything. Plus, sometimes you’ll get some eye-candy wearing short-shorts to ogle. Takes away a little of the competitiveness, sure; but I’ve found it to be a much more enjoyable experience.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:05 AM

“I’m just going home, grab a shower and a shave, give the wife a little pickle- tickle, and I’m on my way.”
May 26th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
I’m sure there’s a way to make this fairly even so that the catchers don’t get their legs destroyed and for the runner to be able to score. Standing blocks would work, as would PROPER SLIDING TECHNIQUES like front foot first, no diving head first and no launching yourself into the catcher.
/played third base for nine years
May 26th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
Dugan needed her.
Marla Hooch went off to get married and Alice Gaspers was doing a rotten job behind the plate.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I don’t know that I really support a rules change here. But absolutely not for the “baseball tradition” reason.
I’d be open to hearing other arguments. Don’t they protect catchers in college differently? Is is effective? Anyone?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
In her defense though she really needed that dick and this was the 40s so she probably felt it had to be marriage first
(I’ve broken this movie down way too much)
May 26th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
The video wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Admittedly, there’s been more than one catcher put out for an extended period of time because of a home plate collision (and some really famous ones in baseball history….Ray Fosse, etc).
That said, blocking the plate is part of the gig as a catcher. Shit happens.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I’ll be really impressed if you didn’t have to google this name.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Probably of interest here, as Calcaterra pointed out this morning: blocking the plate without possession of the ball is illegal under the rules. It’s just that no one cares.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I gave up hoops for the same reason (other than reffing). We used to play pick-up two nights a week at the local school, and we had these assholes who would come in and throw elbows, two hand shoves on layups, etc. After I chipped my tooth from an elbow (despite wearing a mouthpiece) I gave it up.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Next youre gonna tell me pitchers should be wearing helmets
May 26th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
All I know is that launching yourself into the catcher like that wouldn’t fly in front of the coaches I had playing tee ball, slow pitch and little league. One kid got kicked off our team for doing it when I played. We always were told to go feet first and never for the legs. It’s bad fundamentals in my opinion.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
I’m trying to find the Ventura one from his home plate collision back in ’97 but with little success…when that was over his foot was spun around 180 degrees, it’s a small miracle he ever played again
May 26th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
How could you possibly begrudge Marla Hooch a chance at happiness? Did you SEE what she looked like before her makeover? Her marriage is nothing short of a miracle.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
they gotta teach the catchers to block the plate correctly to avoid injury, wouldn’t have gotten a twisted ankle if he hadn’t been crouching like that.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
Probably of interest here, as Calcaterra pointed out this morning: blocking the plate without possession of the ball is illegal under the rules.
I miss the days when ballparks had the “No pepper” signs posted next to the on-deck circles.

Well that’s a shame.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
I’m sure there’s a way to make this fairly even so that the catchers don’t get their legs destroyed and for the runner to be able to score.
if you’re positioned properly there’s almost no chance of injuring your leg.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
my company has two softball leagues, competitive and fun, for this reason.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:13 AM

They still have them at US Cellular.

One of my former employers had this set-up as well. You’d be surprised at the number of assholes that were ultra-competitive in the “fun” league though.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Me too. Just waiting for the right time to break out the flask of Beam. Probably around the 3 PM hour. Pregaming at the office to avoid the $7 beers tonight.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
exactly. a lower, more forward center of gravity and bracing yourself for the hit with your leg posturing would prevent these kinds of injuries.
sucks he’s gotta learn this way, but no reason to change the rules b/c one player gets hurt for bad form.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
All I know is that launching yourself into the catcher like that wouldn’t fly in front of the coaches I had playing tee ball, slow pitch and little league.
come the fuck on… how is this relavent to the conversation?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Ok, I saw this movie, so I won’t be arguing foolishly against your quote.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
That looked painful. Pretty bad for the Giants if he is out. Arizona Diamondbacks the 2011 NL West Champions!
May 26th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
They still have them at US Cellular.
They had them at County Stadium as well. Sadly, they didn’t carry over to Miller Park.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
YYSA – I’ve always been kinda curious… what’s the hierarchy in Phoenix? I know the Coyotes are probably last on everyone’s list but is it primarily a Suns town or what?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
That’s a championship quality move, SC.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
I ref FLAG football some times and it’s almost as bad as playing. You just want to hit these guys sometimes. You aren’t getting scouted for the pros. You’re playing for a fucking t-shirt.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
exactly. a lower, more forward center of gravity and bracing yourself for the hit with your leg posturing would prevent these kinds of injuries.
yup. from day one, catchers are taught to stay low and point your left foot down the foul line; worst case scenario is they cleat your foot. but with your leg in that position, your ankle and/or knee won’t go in a direction it’s not meant to go.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
Now that’s funny.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Suns are number one. If any one tells you otherwise they are not originally from here. I would say Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Coyotes. And if ASU does anything it jumps to number 2.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
I 3lieve. No quit in this dog. Hoping the team feels the same way. I want to see a win tonight, not a funeral procession.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Oh and this definitely means the end of Posey’s catching career. They were already talking about moving him to 3rd or 1st base next year. This will more than likely hasten the move.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
in college there were some guys who were kicked off the hockey team due to violations of drug use or test scores or whatever, so they’d make floor hockey teams and literally plaster people to the walls in intramurals. since their buddies in their frats were the refs they never called them out for explicity breaking the no contact rule, bullshit.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
You’re playing for a fucking t-shirt.
don’t they hand out tshirts to the teams that win the world series/super bowl, national champ, etc.?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Giants are not exactly lighting the division on fire
May 26th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
If the Giants were to move him, they should try him at 3B. He played shortstop through most of his college career. Putting him at 1B would be a fucking waste.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
I won the doubles intramural racquetball championship my sophomore year and they handed me and my partner (both of us are beanpoles) these XL intramural champions t-shirts and said that’s all they had. I was pissed.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
It’s a little too soon to make that sort of declaration.
The standings are sort of secondary at this point to you know, the rosters.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Agreed. You can move Sandoval over to 1st and Belt will play LF or RF once Burrell or Ross are gone.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
I won the doubles intramural racquetball championship my sophomore year and they handed me and my partner (both of us are beanpoles) these XL intramural champions t-shirts and said that’s all they had. I was pissed.
Why are free T-Shirts always XL? I’ve never received a free T-shirt that wasn’t comically too large for me.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
i got tossed from a game at 12yo for trucking a catcher…..in a game we won 53-0! and i was a catcher myself. what a dick
May 26th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
May 26th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Why wouldn’t I make this declaration? Olney linked the story yesterday about Bochy and the front office becoming worried about the abuse Posey was getting behind the plate because of the foul tips and hits in the head. It’s an investment in the team, and the logical investment is moving him to third. I’m sure it’s a similar discussion to what the Twins are having about Mauer and his positional future.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Everyone’s reaction in the locker room and statements last night lead me to believe it’s not good.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I won the doubles intramural racquetball championship
i figured you for the kinda man who requires another man to finish the job.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
I wasn’t making a judgement on whether moving him is right or wrong. It’s just too early to say “this definitely means the end of Posey’s catching career”. Even if all the facts and predictors indicate moving Posey is a logical move, that hardly means Sabean is going to do that.
And Posey is not the same as Mauer. Different bodies, and that’s a big deal for a catcher.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
That’s a good point, but it still seems ankle related. I feel like the reaction was more to the fact he was down on the ground writhing in pain. I’m just being optimistic more than anything I guess.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Damn it just finally clicked for me. Olney’s going so nuts on this story because he feels a special connection to anyone else nicknamed Buster.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
i think we’re all in agreement that posey is no switch-hitting jesus.
/leading the league in defensive catching
May 26th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
I did see that he was throwing out a ridiculous number of baserunners. Hope he stays healthy for you guys.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Damn it just finally clicked for me. Olney’s going so nuts on this story because he feels a special connection to anyone else nicknamed Buster.
Haha. How many grown men still go by that name?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Very true, Posey is only 6’1-6’2 and around 200, whereas Mauer is 6’4″ and 220. Mauer needs to move to 3B stat.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Yeah, I know they wouldn’t try it. My point is more an out is an out.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Yep. I think the difference is even bigger than that. Mauer is 6’5″ (per Twins) and 235.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Buster is definitely heavier than 200. More like 225.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Hope he stays healthy for you guys.
is this like me saying i hope desean jackson stays healthy?
May 26th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
sheeeeeeit.
/I got nothing
May 26th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Plus Mauer is youthfully handsome. That has to count for something.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
No, fuck the Redskins, but I sincerely hope for good things for the “other” three teams in the AL East – in particular for the O’s because of their Rochester history. Ripken still makes it up here regularly.
May 26th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
any male being addressed by their 73-year old Aunt Wanda?
May 26th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
I am not a big fan of changing rules but I have thought for a long time that a catcher deserves some protection from being bowled over while in a defenseless position.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
Pretty clear to me it’s a cheap shot.
Posey is one step up the line toward 3rd and is on the infield side of the line by a half step. Definitely not covering the plate – runner has a clear path.
Dude was showing off as a tough guy against someone in a completely esposed situation – easy slide on the back side of the plate serves the same purpose.
Don’t know much about Cousins but I’d like to see a few 98 MPH fastballs thrown at his chin today and see what comes of that. Oh yeah – after the first one, the pitchers are warned … so there is some protection for MLB players.
