South Park Lampoons The NCAA’s “Slave Trade”
Last night South Park took a swing at the NCAA in an episode entitled, “Crack Baby Athletic Association.” In it, Cartman and some of the other South Park kids started profiting off crack baby basketball. Because of the CBAA rules that Cartman invented, the babies could not share in any of the millions they were earning the CBAA.
UPDATE: Videos are working again. That was a rough couple minutes.
The direction of the episode started to become clear when Cartman and Butters tried to recruit unborn crack babies. It was the babies only way out, but rules specifically state that they can’t give the families of the crack babies any money.
Cartman tried to get some tips on the slave trade from someone at the University of Colorado, but he just wanted to talk about the student athletes. Eventually, Stan helped Cartman realize that they would look much better if they built some place for the crack babies to live and get the care they need.
All in all, it was your typical episode of South Park that takes a clever look at a big issue. I think we know where Trey Parker and Matt Stone stand on paying student athletes. The only problem is, they also have to take into consideration how they’re going to pay the crack baby soccer players and crack baby bowlers Not all crack babies are YouTube sensations.
[You can watch the entire episode of Crack Baby Athletic Association at South Park Studios. No matter how you feel about paying student athletes, you'll never look at Slash the same way again.]

good episode, but what a weird ending with wunderslaush.

Great episode. I like to think Duffy watched it but scoffed at the episode’s elementary vocabulary.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
The song was awesome.

Vunter Slaush!
That episode was awesome.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
No mention of Slash? That was the best part of the episode.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
I mentioned Slash at the very end. Don’t want to ruin it. Thought that part was amazing.

Screw you, Sirh! I’m goin’ home.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
still dont undertand how getting an education, room, board, equipment, tutors etc is not getting paid.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
their take on slash totally made sense…slash is too perfect of a rock lead guitarist in every way. the look, lifestyle, sound, low slung axe and wall of marshalls…when i think “guitar solo” he’s the first guy that comes to mind.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
because people that are not you are profiting to an insane degree from your likeness.
i like duffy’s plan for paying the players.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
The oversimplification is easier. I think their bigger question is why players aren’t allowed to get paid in the first place.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Cartman interviewing the crack mom had me rolling.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
this is the first time i have watched a south park episode and thought their take on something was incredibly dumb.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
It’s gonna be a real simple fix for EA Sports. Lose the court case, the ruling won’t call for retroactive payment, EA will feature generic rosters in the future, easily customizable by nerds on the internet who allow free download. Nice try, Ed O’Bannon.

Hi, I’m sarah mclaughlin and I was famous for 2 months

I disagree with them too. But Cartman’s old south accent and Slash was still hilarious.

because people that are not you are profiting to an insane degree from your likeness.
But yet you still get to hone your skills at their expense and are given a chance to make millions yourself.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
being given a chance to make millions isn’t quite the same as your likeness making millions THAT YOU COULD HAVE if not for some executive hiding behind a wall of lawyers and red tape.
also, it’s not like a huge percentage of these guys make millions, even those who make it to the NFL.

does this not happen in just about every industry?

That’s kind of a weak argument. How many college athletes go on to make millions? 1%? 5%?
May 26th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
the characters were funny..point was incedibly stupid

but without 150K in scholarships, there is no forum for the athlete to hone his skill for the pros.

I am not saying the current system is right, but I still don’t like the idea of them getting a FREE education, access to top flight training facilities, skill improvement etc is still a better chance than any other student at the university to make a living. Oh and yeah they still get an education and every kid who doesn’t make it to the NFL/NBA/MLB still at least has a degree.

In football, no. But in Baksetball … go to Europe.

absolutely. i bet the kid at a large HS who is in top quarter of his class but cant afford college would gladly take that dipshit athlete’s money.

Video games often pan to the crowd to show fan reaction. I’ve been in the stands, where’s my money from my likeness?
May 26th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
I once took a shit at Kinnick Stadium. Where’s my royalties?

You can’t be serious.

That was the first good episode of the season. First 3 were horrible.

I thought the small dick=irrational anger episode was pretty funny.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Yeah well, each individual players potential interest is going to be watered down given the sheer number of players in the NCAA. It’s not like they are going to issue royalty payments based on performance.
Plus, what does likeness really mean? The University/Athletic Department is going to have control over jersey numbers, correct? Is likeness going to be a black athlete with generic facial features and slight hair detail? Height/weight?
May 26th, 2011 at 12:40 PM

It’s been broken once before, maybe twice. Is that a lot?

this.

It depends on the sport. If you’re talking about football, that’s a good point, but baseball and basketball players can certainly find venues to play outside of college once they are 18.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
i think it is interesting that both sides take to the extreme.
not all athletes get full rides, not all athletes go to the best schools. not all schools take in the income the big ones do.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
I think that lawsuit is going down. Even if it wins, impact will be minimal for all parties involved.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
i don’t have any answers, but the premise itself is pretty fucked up you have to admit.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
example:
when reggie bush played for USC you knew who #5 HB was…people didn’t buy #5 jerseys b/c it’s a sweet looking number.

Dude, it’s a joke. Stop being so defensive. It’s the internet. People are fallible. You need to enroll in my self-deprecation class on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the TBL summer session. I think Spencer is teaching Hyperbole 221 on Wednesdays so you can fit that in too.

My #5 OSU jersey is pretty awesome looking.

No need. I majored in self-depreciation. I wasn’t really being defensive, I was just curious if that was a meme I hadn’t picked up on.

I found some of the Canadian Royal Wedding stuff amusing…then again I laugh at just about everything in those Canadian accents

Best part about that class is the sidebar discussion he always has about acceptable and non acceptable makeshift spittoons

when you’re bored in class just ask him who is better, the beatles or the rolling stones?
May 26th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
No one’s buying a video game for a fan’s likeness just like no one’s buying a game for Ed O’Bannon or Sam Keller’s likeness.
May 26th, 2011 at 12:54 PM
nice! i like my no. 8 steve bellisari…er…devier posey jersey too. yea…posey…that’s the ticket.

I thought the wedding stuff was pretty good. “The pudding has been knocked over. This does not go with tradition at all.”
May 26th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
“The prince and princess are being pelted with Cap’n Crunch, which is the tradition”

The parade of irrationally angry guys pulling up in Hummers, F-250′s and sports cars in last weeks episode was great.
May 26th, 2011 at 1:35 PM
Cartman is at least as competent as anyone at the NCAA.
May 26th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
I can answer that for Spence. It’s Creed. No contest.
