Randy “Macho Man” Savage Dies in Car Accident
One of professional wrestling’s most charismatic, beloved characters of all time, Randy “Macho Man” Savage (Randall Mario Poffo) sadly died this morning in a car accident in Tampa, Florida. Randy reportedly suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel. According to TMZ, Savage “veered across a concrete median through oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a tree.” He was 58 years old. His wife was a passenger in the vehicle and survived with minor injuries.
You certainly didn’t have to be a wrestling fan to appreciate the unforgettable Macho Man. What a tremendous loss. July 9th, 1985 was when it all started for the Macho Man, and for us:
The proposal to Miss Elizabeth sticks out as one of his most memorable moments. Between Gorilla Monsoon’s call of the proceedings and Savage’s “Will you marry MEEEEEEEEE!” it’s downright impossible to forget.
Macho Man on Arsenio.
Hulk Hogan saves the Macho Man. This infamous handshake was the equivalent of the Yankees and Red Sox making out.
When I order a drink today to toast the Macho Man, I shall do so with his signature “air piano” finger wiggle.
A spirited Macho Man fan has already posted “Best Of” videos, in two parts.
Here’s part two.
And finally, Hulk Hogan on his old buddy who he recently started speaking to again.

RIP Macho Man.
I went to a local wrestling show the other day and there were guys dressed up as Macho Man even thought he wasn’t there.
Saw Hogan, Steiner, Nash, Beefcake, X-Pac and others.

Awful news. Wonder how the WWE will hold tribute to him Monday on Raw? Supposedly Vince Mcmahon has had a problem with him since he left for WCW. Guy was a legend though. Right behind Hogan in the 80′s.

Haha! Inappropriate but hilarious. If only blogs were around when Rick Rude died.

Wrestlemania III. Ricky the Dragon Steamboat and Randy Savage. One of the greatest matches in the history of wrestling. I am not afraid to admit I teared up a bit. This guy was part of my childhood.
Going to be playing Pomp and Circumstance in the office today. Might have to dig out the old wrestling buddy of Macho Man and deliver some flying elbow drops tonight. This is just terrible. So sad.

This is the first celebrity death that has bummed me out in a long time. #OoooohYeaaah

The career match against the Ultimate Warrior in Wrestlemania VII remains a seminal moment of my childhood.
Also, the “Match Made in Heaven/Match Made in Hell” double main event at Summer Slam where he first Married Miss Elizabeth in the ring, then immediately had a tag team match with Hogan remains one of more the romantic, plausible love stories of the era.
RIP Macho Man.

oh, snap, not step

Well said, you’ll never hear anyone say “I hated Savage, he sucked.”
Brief tangent: One of the first moments that got me completely hooked on wrestling as a kid was a Saturday Night’s Main Event, Warrior defending the title against the Million Dollar Man. I had to watch it on my dad’s shitty black and white TV since my parents were hogging the other one.
I can remember Savage running down and interfering and beating the holy hell out of Warrior, despite the sea of officials (literally like 20 guys) trying to stop him. I remember him leaping over everyone to ram a foreign object into Warrior’s head. I was 8 or 9 at the time and I was completely hooked. I thought Savage was this unstoppable lunatic who could do whatever he wanted because he was crazy.

As a baseball traditionalist, I find the mourning of a dirty steroid user deplorable.

I think he patched things up with McMahon/the WWE…he was recently featured quite prominently in the most recent WWE video game, WWE All Stars.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Did the first on the scene hold his arm up and release it three times before declaring him dead?
May 20th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Those were great days to follow wrestling and that clip rocked.
Quick aside: You just knew that Rick McGraw was going to get destroyed every week, no matter what.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
My favorite Savage moment.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
This is horribly hilarious.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
I think either way, Vince would know to do this one right. Guy was larger than life.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
You all knew who was the recipient of that infamous leg drop during Hogan’s heel turn? Uh huh.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Supposedly Vince Mcmahon has had a problem with him
You would too if he took the virginity of your 15 year old daughter.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
Exactly, that’s classic
May 20th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
I shall buy some Slim Jim’s today in honor of the legend.

HulkHogan4Real Hulk Hogan
He had so much life in his eyes & in his spirit, I just pray that he’s happy and in a better place and we miss him.
We miss him a lot. I feel horrible about the ten years of having no communication. This was a tough one. HH

The title of this Macho Man video entertains me.

There was no shaking adrenaline rush halfway down on the third arm raise.
I find this phrasing oddly beautiful. It’s like NDub just showed up at my office with a big bag of dust and poured it on my desk

I met Macho Man at show for work when he was selling for Slim Jims back in 1994.
You got to take a Polaroid pix with him, he was in a leather yellow and red suit with fringe. Spectacular.
I shake his hand and he says “Where you from?”
Told him Chicago, and he said” Oh, I went to school in Downers Grove”
Cool. The camera guy goes “Okay look over here 1,2..” Macho Man looks at camera thumbs up and says “Yeeaaaahhhhh!”
Hilarious, gotta find that picture.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Hernia, if there’s anything I can do for you during this terrible time, please don’t hesitate to ask. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through right now.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
I suppose it’s better than that gay dude who threw glitter all over Newt Gingrich. How hilarious was that.

@wilhelmreems – The news is absolutely tragic, but his memory will stay alive. Macho Man paved the path for many Superstars and I’m sure they will pay him a big tribute on RAW this week. – Scott with Slim Jim

- If people have only seen his WWF work, you need to head to youtube to see his stuff from Tennessee in early 80s and his white hot feud with Jerry Lawler in Memphis in 1984.
- Savage appearing in the new WWE video game was a decision made by THQ and not Vince. Vince approved it but it was not his idea.
- IT will be interesting to see what kind of tribute he gets on the PPV this weekend and on RAW. I doubt Vince comes clean about his rift with Savage, Stephanie rumors or not.
