Yardwork: Mets-Marlins Postponed Due to Rain Despite No Rain
There were four games postponed yesterday due to inclement weather. Now I can’t speak for all four locations, but does anyone know why the Mets-Marlins game in New York was postponed? Did someone crash the Madden Cruiser into Citi Field?
Because the weather here was fine in the sense that it was, you know, not raining. Mets manager Terry Collins and his reaction of “are you kidding?” pretty much sums it up. And Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez also wondered aloud why they played in rain the day before, but opted not to play in a non-rain setting. As usual, decisions made in the area of Flushing, Queens continue to make little if any sense.
Yankees 6, Rays 2 — A-Rod went deep twice, and Jorge Posada went 2-for-3. All is right with the Yankees now, but that’s usually what happens when stopper Ivan Nova takes the mound. James Shields took his first loss since opening day, though he didn’t pitch all that terribly: 7 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 9 K.
Braves 3, Astros 1, 11 innings — It was looking like an Astros win until Brian McCann decided to work on his off day. He came off the bench in the ninth to tie the game with a pinch-hit, two-out home run, then launched a two-run shot in the 11th to win it. Houston fans have former Yankee reliever Mark Melancon to thank for the blown save. What’s amazing is the Astros still have two more wins than the Twins.
Cards 2, Phils 1 — Lance Berkman hit a bases loaded single in the ninth for the walkoff win. Have you seen his numbers? Ridiculous. I’m patiently waiting for those digits to politely leap off a cliff. The Phillies have lost a season high four straight games.
Rockies 5, Giants 3 — Ubaldo Jimenez finally wasn’t awful. He went seven innings and allowed three runs while striking out seven. The Rockies rallied for four runs in the eighth thanks in part to a Jonathan Sanchez throwing error and just plain bad relief pitching from Javier Lopez.
Indians 7, Royals 3 — “It’s been remarkable the amount of quality starts we have gotten out of these guys,” said Manny Acta. Yes, Manny, yes it has. Travis Hafner’s bat continues to be engulfed in flames.
Twins 2, Mariners 1 — The nine-game losing streak is over. The Twinkies managed to snap the streak with Frank Liriano (7 IP, 1 ER) outdueling King Felix (8 IP, 2 ER). Here are some thoughtful words from some legendary Twins on the passing of Harmon Killebrew.
A’s 14, Angels 0 — It was the Angels turn to be the Royals yesterday, but the beating was spread rather evenly as both Tyler Chatwood and Kevin Jepsen each gave up five earned runs. Oakland’s Gio Gonzalez was quite the opposite. He went seven splendid shutout innings of one-hit ball.
Dodgers 3, Brewers 0 — Matt Kemp hit a two-run shot in the first and that’s all starter Hiroki Kuroda would need. Kemp is having a delightful comeback season but no one seems to give a shit.
Reds 7, Cubs 5 — Hey, the Cubs blew another lead late in the game. This is almost as surprising as finding out that the hair on top of Uncle Lewis’s head was in a fact, a toupee. And we must give credit where credit is due, Kerry Wood’s hilarious throw into left field absolutely deserves a 9 out of 10 on the baseball comedy scale.
White Sox 4, Rangers 3 — The first thing I heard when I put on MLB Network’s Quick Pitch this morning was, “you can put it on the booooooooooard, yiiiii-eeeeeeeeeeeessss, yiiiii-eeeeeeeeeeeessss!!!” I will never escape the wrath of Hawk Harrelson.

Let’s not forget Tony Campana (WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?) and his abysmal line taken to retrieve the error. That was just terrible. I turned them off immediately and moved on to hockey.
Bodog should start taking bets on what hilarious way will the Cubs blow their next game.

Zero earned runs allowed by Cub pitching in the game yesterday, so they got that going for them
I wonder what the record is for most unearned runs when they’re the only runs scored

Damn.. looks like all 2000 fans are bundled up in Cincinnati. Is it STILL cold up there?

Perez needs to get his shit together. If Choo and Smooth can get their AVG up to .250 by next week that would be tremendous. Glad to see Chiz, Kipnis and Phelps are doing well in AAA.

Don’t worry, one of these days he’s going to use “Stone Pony” in the booth on the wrong day and Steve Stone will strangle him to death with his headset cord on live air

Great column by Ron Cook today on the Pirates. Little known fact – Pirates record at this point of the season is exactly the same as last year when they lost 105.

Annoying yes but not has bad as John Sterling when he has to name each home run. If I had to keep one, I pick Hawk, at least he sounds genuine and not just douchey

The 7 unearned was the only third time in MLB history that happened.

They are pathetic. I might actually not attend a Cubs game this year for the first time in years.

By the time it’s warm enough to want to go they might be out of playoff contention.

That’s funny, I was watching the highlights last night and it showed him clapping his hands after he beat out an infield grounder in the ninth, i guess it was better than the 3 K’s earlier in the game….

cold as fuck in cincy yesterday. plus, it was raining. just nasty weather.
between the cubs and the cardinals, the NL Central has to have the worst defense in all of baseball, right?

I don’t get this reference… why would the Madden Cruiser be at a baseball field?
May 18th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Sterling is a disaster, especially since he often makes so many incorrect calls.
But Hawk, Hawk sounds like a moronic cowboy calling the game from his living room. And he’s their TV guy. You can avoid games on the radio much easier.

Still trying to figure out the idiocy that was the home plate ump awarding 1st to the Reds batter on a wild pitch. The catcher caught the ball, and the batter was halfway to the dugout. It was also the third out and the Reds RF was already on the fucking field.

SEEE ya!
May 18th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
In Campana’s defense, he was expecting a riccochet off the angled wall in foul territory (where most bad throws to 3rd would likely hit) but the ball went along the foul line to the wall! Wood’s throw was bad, Ramirez stretched early like a freshman in HS, and Campana got unlucky. Fun times in the Nasti!
Also, Campana grew up south of Dayton, went to UC…so his call up was unexpected and a homecoming. Other than that debacle, he had a decent night coming in late.
ROLL TRIBE!!!

HA. Thankfully Miguel hasn’t been around as much this year.
