2011 NBA Mock Draft 2.0

The 2011 NBA draft is a month away, and here’s Mock Draft No. 2. The first mock was last week, and after last night’s draft lottery, there was significant change in the Top 14. For the picks that have no explanation/reasoning: It’s because there’s no change from last week’s mock draft. Taking a peek at some of the other mocks posted today, it looks like we were ahead of the curve with the Wizards, Rockets, 76ers and Thunder. If you’re wondering why I have foreign players falling, take a look at the 29th pick.
1 Cleveland Cavaliers – Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke … Seen some people think the Cavs should go Williams first and then take a PG at 4, but I think a healthy Irving is a more complete player than Walker/Knight.
2 Minnesota Timberwolves – Derrick Williams, F, Arizona.
3 Utah Jazz – Brandon Knight, PG, Kentucky … Had the Jazz going big in the last mock, but moving up three spots allows them to grab the 2nd best PG in the draft, who will take over for Devin Harris in a year or two.
4 Cleveland Cavaliers – Enes Kanter, F, Kentucky … Lots of options for the Cavs here, including Leonard, since they don’t have a SF. But if Kanter is the best post player in this draft (we’ll find out in the coming weeks), they must take him.
5 Toronto Raptors – Tristan Thompson, PF, Texas … I actually like their backcourt but hate their frontcourt. Grab some beef to make life for Bargnani easier?
6 Washington Wizards – Kawahi, Leonard, SF, San Diego St. Had him 4th last time, and the next day Chad Ford labeled Leonard a “Top 5 pick.”
7 Sacramento Kings – Kemba Walker, PG, Connecticut … Had them going with Brandon Knight last time, but Walker’s the next best option.
8 Detroit Pistons – Alec Burks, SG, Colorado … Other than Greg Monroe’s future at PF, isn’t any position in play here? Or does the worst rebounding team in the league go big? Burks is a smooth, Rip-like shooter.
9 Charlotte Bobcats – Klay Thompson, SG, Washington St … 2nd worst 3-point shooting team in the league lands very good offensive player. Gerald Henderson seems more like a valuable reserve.
10 Milwaukee Bucks – Jan Vesely, PF, Czech Republic
11 Golden State Warriors – Chris Singleton, SF, FSU
12 Utah Jazz – Jimmer Fredette, G, BYU … They’ve got Jefferson, Millsap, Okur and Favors at PF/C, and Gordon Hayward is supposed to be their future SF. So take the local kid who may light it up off the bench the way Redick, Vinnie Johnson, Jamal Crawford or Korver do.
13 Phoenix Suns – Josh Selby, G, Kansas … Moved him way up from the last mock draft because of the dearth of available scorers, and the fact that the Suns are set in the frontcourt.
14 Houston Rockets – Tobias Harris, F, Tennessee
15 Indiana Pacers – Marcus Morris, SF/PF, Kansas … Some sites have Morris going in the Top 10, but I slide him down two spots from last time, which is probably a better fit. He can come off the bench to back up Granger and Hansbrough.
16 Philadelphia 76ers – Markieff Morris, PF, Kansas
17 New York Knicks – Jordan Hamilton, SG, Texas … This may seem silly considering their lack of size and how good of a story Landry Fields was last year, but they could use another scorer to take the pressure off Melo & Amare. Hamilton has New York swagger, too.
18 Washington Wizards (from Atlanta) – Marshon Brooks, SG, Providence … If the Wizards lose Nick Young, Brooks could be a solid replacement.
19 Charlotte Bobcats (from New Orleans) – Bismack Biyombo, PF, Congo … Most mock drafts have the Bobcats taking him 9th. The next Serge Ibaka?
20 Minnesota Timberwolves (from Memphis) – Jonas Valanciunas, PF, Lithuania … Everyone has this guy hovering around the Top 10, but he might not be able to come to the US for a few years. Who wants to waste a pick, like Orlando did with Fran Vazquez in 2005? Kahn does, of course.
21 Portland Trail Blazers – Reggie Jackson, PG, Boston College
22 Denver Nuggets – Lucas Nogueira, C, Brazil
23 Houston Rockets (from Orlando) – Kenneth Faried, PF, Morehead State
24 Oklahoma City Thunder – Kyle Singler, SF, Duke
25 Boston Celtics – Jordan Williams, PF/C, Maryland … Had him going to the Knicks last time, when I had Boston going with a scorer. Williams isn’t the second coming of Kendrick Perkins, but he’s not a bad start. Would it feel weird for Boston to draft a guy from Maryland … 25 years after Len Bias?
26 Dallas Mavericks – Shelvin Mack, G, Butler
27 New Jersey Nets (from L.A. Lakers) – Travis Leslie, SG, Georgia … They probably won’t bring back Vujacic, leaving Anthony Morrow the only SG on the roster. Leslie is a sick athlete.
28 Chicago Bulls (from Miami via Toronto) – Davis Bertans, SF, Serbia
29 San Antonio Spurs –Donatas Motiejunas, PF, Lithuania … As you can see, I’m not too high on foreign players in this draft. You’ve seen plenty of solid, young, former college players contribute in the playoffs – Gibson, Vazquez, Sam Young, Darrell Arthur, etc – and my guess is some of the foreign prospects slip because of it.
30 Chicago Bulls – Nolan Smith, PG, Duke … CJ Watson’s only on the books for one more year, and I think Smith will make a much better backup.

We should do a commenter mock NBA draft — that has potential.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
huh? What? When did this happen? Did Amare resign and its all been a bad dream? Where am I.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
5 Toronto Raptors – Tristan Thompson, PF, Texas
Plus, you know, he’s from the Greater Toronto area.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
love me a good mock draft.
and I totally didn’t even know the Toronto connection, Geeez. thanks!

lol

How are Kemba Walker and Tyreke Evans going to play together? They’re exactly the same except Evans is bigger. Just listening to the Simmons podcast, don’t the Kings need a true point? That’s going to be a trainwreck.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
I giggled.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Pistons need a Center and a starting PG (stuckey sucks) way more than a SG, but it’s irrelevant who they draft. I feel less hope in this team than the Pirates.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
set in the sense of Gortat/Lopez at C. no need to draft another. at PF: Warrick, Frye are solid though not spectacular. would a PF really be an upgrade over those 2? at SF: Pietrus, Hill, Childress. Don’t need a SF.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
SOLD!!!
I would take Singleton and Vesely over Leonard.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Kemba and Tyreke = a match made in heaven*
*not a match made in heaven
Compton swagger > New York swagger
May 18th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
TBL if you can do the Harlem Shake does that give you extra swagger points?
May 18th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Was just about to post the same exact thing, glad I refreshed!
May 18th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
please let Spencer pick for the Cavs. and make sure DirtHeavy has something to say about one of the teams as well.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
What a falloff this guy has had. Thought he was going to be pretty good in NJ.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
May 18th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
I wonder how often CJ reminds Joakim in practice of when he busted Joakim’s teeth out.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Gortat is solid. Frye is nice. Warrick not so much. Pietrus is gone. Hill might be gone and Childress is small. The Suns are much more set at Guard. Nash/Brooks/Studley/Dowdell/Childress(who is more a guard).
If both the Morris’ are there the Suns will take one.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
I realize Derrick Williams played a little bigger in college because he could, and that he has a little outside game, but why do you take him when you have K-Love? Best on board?
May 18th, 2011 at 1:33 PM
I think the Cavs should go Williams and then hope Walker is there at #4. I’m not sold on Irving. He could turn out to be very good, but I think Walker is a better option right away.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Jerebko is a stud so they don’t need a SF. They need a real PG or a legit center to team with Monroe.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:35 PM
Leaking out that Chosen Never Won is sick for tonight’s tilt at the UC.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Let him draft for the T-Wolves so he can take Jimmer (Because that’s what they do) and watch all TBL world explode.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:36 PM
They both seem like bust city…
The Wolves should trade out of the #2, doesnt seem unrealistic to trade it to the Sixers for Iggy.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Kurt Warner has returned to glory.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
Would they like a smorgasbord of swing players?
May 18th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
Preemptive excuse leaking out you mean?
May 18th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
nah, I suspect it will be a couple of years before we know the answer to that.
And, I would venture to say that the chances of Sacramento taking Kemba Walker are ZERO.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
I call Pistons. Bismack Biyombo or Jan Vesely!
May 18th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Watch KAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNN! trade the #2 plus some other of his shit for Gay. He is gay for Gay.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Does this mean he doesn’t pass the ball like all the NYC guards?
May 18th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
Thought this was going to be an article about him going after Stephen Hawking like Mike Seaver did
May 18th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
I was thinking this as well. No way they move Evans to the 2 even though I think he would be a better option than Kemba at SG. I can’t see the Kings going PG.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
Or is it the sickness that is leaking out?
May 18th, 2011 at 1:43 PM
Well, the thing is, I suspect that Williams is going to mostly play SF in the NBA. So, from that standpoint, they should be fine. However, from the standpoint that he’s going to be a mega, mega, mega bust…then they shouldn’t draft him. I just don’t think he’s going to fit in a position in the NBA, and don’t see him as being much more than just a decent player.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:43 PM
I predicted they would draft a guy named Bismack Biyombo last night. Sounds like a lock that he would fail.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:43 PM

May 18th, 2011 at 1:45 PM
Pussy. Kobe wouldn’t sit out sick.
/drops grenade and sneaks into the shadows
May 18th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
I guess that was my point, he’s got the game of a power forward with the body of a small forward.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
I hope it’s full blown Aids.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
I think the best part of this post is the implication that Chad Ford is lifting TBL’s “evaluations”.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:50 PM
New York Knicks – Jordan Hamilton, SG, Texas … This may seem silly
Should have stopped right there. Between ball hog Melo and Amar’e, this would be a total waste of a pick, Just because D’Antoni doesn’t believe in defense, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t play some. You can’t outscore everyone.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:50 PM
Illegal immigration at it’s worst.513 bodies in a truck bound for USA.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Derrick Williams is very comparable to Michael Beasley, an undersized 4 or oversized 3. Which again makes me wonder if they couldn’t get some real value for the pick. To GS with Flynn for Curry and next year’s #1. Something along those lines. Curry can play both guard positions and gives them some much needed shooting.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
I doubt Utah is going to take two PG’s, neither of whom are actual PG’s.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
no no no no no, leave the Curry the fuck alone and take Monta!
/Warriors fan
May 18th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Selby is waaaaaay too high and Faried is a few spots too low.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:56 PM
If Phoenix is going to draft Selby, they’ll be trading down to do it.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:56 PM
Please take Faried, Knicks.
May 18th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
and at that point they might as well sell it.
/shoots self
May 18th, 2011 at 1:58 PM
Or that TBL has done evaluations, such as:
YouTube highlights does not equal scouting.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:00 PM
Illegal immigration at it’s worst.513 bodies in a truck bound for USA.
How long would it take them to make $7000? Wow, that entire scenario sounds miserable on about 9 levels.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Need PG and a big man. Stuckey can play 2 guard, I guess. regardless, they are fucked.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Also — that’s a cool 3.5 mill for the smugglers if they would have gotten through.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
I see Derrick Williams having a Drew Gooden-like journeyman career.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
I could see Toronto picking Knight or Walker, whoever is available. Either one would be a nice change of pace to Calderon. Kawhi Leonard would make a lot of sense too as he can play inside-out with Bargnani. His defense would be a welcome addition as well.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
They probably already have the money…the boss is sitting on stacks in his villa, while his lower level guys drove the truck.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Also, Utah has a history of going low risk so I think they’d take Kemba over Knight.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Definitely could agree with this. Seems like a great college player that just won’t really translate.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
They probably already have the money…the boss is sitting on stacks in his villa, while his lower level guys drove the truck.
Good point — I’m sure you don’t pay on arrival in that deal.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Or they pay off their debt by working in the fields. Our produce might go up in price now….
May 18th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Is it better to have the best PG in the draft (Irving) and potentially miss out on the top 2 frontcourt players? Or to take the better of Williams/Kanter and the 2nd best PG?
May 18th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Is he going to get the ducktail thing shaved in the back of his head?
May 18th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
Very possible. It’s not difficult to see him end up in the Carl Landry, Ryan Gomes, Jeff Green, Michael Beasley, player without a true position that is forced to come off the bench. It’s another reason why I think they should trade the pick.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:19 PM
He is 6’8 with tons of athleticism and should only improve on his shot. He was pretty deadly from 3 last year (56%)
May 18th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
I see Derrick Williams having a Drew Gooden-like journeyman career.
Definitely could agree with this. Seems like a great college player that just won’t really translate.
Based on what?
May 18th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
I would base it on the fact that he’s going to have trouble guarding either SFs or PFs in the NBA. He will definitely create some mismatchs on offense, but I think he figures to be a defensive liability, and I also have major doubts that he can rebound at the next level.
May 18th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
I can just feel the excitement oozing from my pores over the thought of drafting someone named “Jan.”
/wanking motion
May 18th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
yes, they will draft another 2 guard. i know joe isn’t that smart, but he’s not isiah.
