Jose Bautista Continues to Slam Homers. When is Rick Reilly Going to Ask Him to Urinate Into a Cup?
Jose Bautista: Last year, only two MLB players hit more than 40 homers: Toronto’s Jose Bautista (54) and Albert Pujols (42). You’ve heard of Pujols. Bautista previously played for Baltimore, Tampa, Kansas City and Pittsburgh. Currently, your Major League leader in homers? Jose Bautsita (16). He’s also leading the AL in batting, slugging, on-base percentage, and OPS. Incredibly, Bautista now has 64 homers in the last 162 games – nobody else in baseball has more than 42 in that span, according to Aaron Gleeman. Bautista’s an absolute steal, says Fangraphs. I can’t wait to read the definitive Bautista profile. He’s the next in a long line of great players from Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic): Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Adrian Beltre, Sammy Sosa …

Yankees should sign this guy

Come on TBL… stop it.
May 16th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
This got drowned out by the hockey-akke in the previous post, but the Astros have been sold by Drayton McLane to Jim Crane.
/also, no one probably cares.

I’ll care if the new owner gets rid of that stupid hill in center
May 16th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
I’m 99% sure he’s juicing, if he hits 50 again I’ll be 100%

The first line of his profile states that he’s a hockey writer. Why in the blue fuck should anyone care about his thoughts on any other sport?

I don’t know much about the guy, so I’ll say anything is possible.
May 16th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
Eyedrops.
May 16th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
Redundant.
May 16th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
Get new uniforms, too. The current ones are just awful.
May 16th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
Go stros
May 16th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
How’s he beating the tests? The allegation here that MLB’s testing policy is about as effective as the NFL one?
May 16th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
He’s the next in a long line of great players from Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic): Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Adrian Beltre, Sammy Sosa …
Oh for fuck’s sake…
TBL hates Dominicans.

They’re not great, but they aren’t bad either.
May 16th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
Based on the history of the Houston Astros they’re probably donning the best uniforms the franchise ever had
May 16th, 2011 at 2:58 PM
Based on the history of the Houston Astros they’re probably donning the best uniforms the franchise ever had
And you’d be wrong to think so.
May 16th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
The 90′s uniforms were great IMO
May 16th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
TBL hates Dominicans.
Maybe Dominicans have naturally occuring steroids in their systems. Like super good sickle cell or something.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:01 PM
I would stand by TBL’s hypothesis if he was still playing for the Pirates. Not so much ever since he moved away to a somewhat competent organization.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Stupid? Awesome more like it.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Like super good sickle cell or something.
Super Good Sickle Cells? I’ll roll with it.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
I saw a picture of TBL, he looked like he was flexing, except he wasn’t. He’s just toned. So I am now publically accusing him of hanging out with Dominicans.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:09 PM
Only heard him on the radio, don’t read him. He does seem to say (and write) some really stupid things.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:09 PM
False. Those things are horrible. They need to go back to the hats that make up your avatar. That’s a sweet logo.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
Perhaps more impressive is that he’s hit 7 homers in 7 games at Target Field.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:12 PM
False. Those things are horrible. They need to go back to the hats that make up your avatar. That’s a sweet logo.
I agree the logo is sweet (thus it is my gravatar), but the current ones really aren’t all that bad. My biggest complaint is that they have too much red and don’t wear the road greys nearly enough.
But if they wanted to revisit how they looked in the 1960s or 70s, I’d be cool with that for sure.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
What did Damien Cox do that makes him a hack? Didn’t everyone blame sportswriters for turning a blind eye from the steroids issue for the entire 90′s? Dude hits 54 home runs out of nowhere and we’re all supposed to act like he’s not using just because he hasn’t failed a test.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Remember two years ago when that blogger got called out by the horrible hack John Gonzalez for hinting that Raul Ibanez’s resurgence in Philly would always be tainted by the steroid mess even though it was no fault of Ibanez’s? That guy got screamed at by might mite Ken Rosenthal on ESPN while Gonzalez moderated like a homo schmuck. My question is…
How is this any different:
The only difference (this is from memory) is that the chastised blogger actually wrote something interesting about Ibanez’s performance instead of just trying to bait people and incite a reaction.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:16 PM
What did Damien Cox do that makes him a hack?
Visit Cox Bloc, there is a tag just for him.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:16 PM
That’s more proof than “he hits a lot of home runs” as a reason to come to a conclusion
May 16th, 2011 at 3:19 PM
I’m not saying it’s not, but to chafe at the mere mention of it is stupid.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
My hack comment was related to his work as a whole, not necessarily confined to that specific column.
May 16th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
As stupid as saying you’ll be “100% sure” of something that’s not possible for you to know?
May 16th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
Enjoyed the sweep this weekend. Imply that the Red Sox cheat all you want.

Pretty sure baseball already asks him to do this, so that wouldnt be neccessary.

May 16th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Posnanski is supposedly doing a huge piece on him in the next couple weeks.
He also made a great point that I think everyone should keep in mind regarding PED use in this day and age, and why it’s more unlikely than ever: public pressure. Anyone caught is savaged by the media and disgraced by the public.
In fact I think this post from TBL proves Pos right, when he said this: “The public pressure is so intense that, I think, it has transcended reason and fairness and perspective. Now, if a player has a hot month-long stretch, the whispers begin.”

yep. it kinda numbs ya and you can go an extra minute…
May 16th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
Mantis, you’re of the opinion that Bautista is clean?
May 16th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
that’s not a novel concept. Been that way since all the big guys got busted. it’ll be that way for awhile, i think. fair? probably not. but without testing for HGH … stand by players at your own peril
May 16th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
Then stop being part of the problem
May 16th, 2011 at 4:16 PM
what do you mean, “Part of the problem”
May 16th, 2011 at 4:17 PM
I bet it was those infernal PEDs that shortened his swing late in the season in 2009.*
* this “joke” requires some actual knowledge of Jose Bautista and swing mechanics
May 16th, 2011 at 4:18 PM
Unless I’m reading the last comment wrong and this has all been in jest you’re saying it’s unfair to immediately accuse players of being on PEDs and yet you seem to be doing that with this post
May 16th, 2011 at 4:22 PM
Yeah, why don’t you look up my comment from Yardwork earlier? The completely overhauled batting stance and swing, consistent starting time, the fact that the Rogers Centre favors right handed batters with pull-power. Those can all lead to huge power spike.
I also believe in the Pos corallory(sp?) in that if caught positive, the public pressure and discredit is huge.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
There is zero scientific evidence that HGH helps you play baseball better. This is a wild goose chase led by uniformed, sometimes hysterical media members.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
And we have a winner. HGH doesn’t help your eyes recognize the spin on a pitch better or to improve your reflexes to swing 1/6000th of a second faster. HGH =! PED
May 16th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
so if, in 2004, when MLB began random testing, why did players start using HGH?
why was HGH banned in 2005?
May 16th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
MLB made a PR decision not based on science. It’s understandable and defensible, at least, unlike the constant harping on HGH by people who aren’t informed.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:33 PM
Because people in power believe something that has not been proven to improve baseball skills in any way that has been measured by scientific studies is bad. Also I’m sure Bud didn’t want to be called to Washington and lose the anti-trust exemption that MLB has.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
I am only speculating, and if I am mistaken, please let know, but would HGH allow people to heal faster or stay healthier longer, giving an athlete an advantage over others not taking it.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:47 PM
There is some evidence it can do things like that in much older people. Think 55+. It is absolutely nothing that would help a professional athlete.
