Bridesmaids Is Not The Hangover For Women
I saw Bridesmaids this weekend as part of a drive-in movie double-feature with Fast Five. I can’t say for certain which was funnier, but I did laugh quite a bit a both movies. I can say that Bridesmaids was the better film of the two and that is not the insult it sounds like. Yes, it’s OK to see this chick flick.
TBL wanted me to take the approach of “why guys need to see Bridesmaids” or “it’s not a chick flick,” [Ed. When I mentioned the movie on twitter this weekend, I got 20-30 responses saying I INSTANTLY NEED TO SEE IT and IT IS NOT A CHICK FLICK] but that would be selling the film short. You should see it because its good. It’s funny, sweet, disgusting and well made. That’s why you should see it.
First, let me say that I liked Bridesmaids more than my girlfriend did. That’s par for the course. I like chick flicks more than she does. I’m totally down with my feminine side like that. That’s not news. What is news is that Bridesmaids is nothing like advertised.
The ads did were completely centered around the “guys need to see Bridesmaids” and “it’s not a chick flick” untruths. The marketing was full of lies! Can you believe that someone at a movie studio would lie to us?
Let’s first deal with the “female equivalent to The Hangover” claims that were brandied about. That’s not the greatest compliment in the world. Have you watched The Hangover recently? It’s much more fun to reference The Hangover than to actually watch The Hangover. I saw The Hangover in theaters and I liked The Hangover. I probably won’t sit down and watch it again anytime soon. Zach Galifianakis and the slideshow from the lost camera during the credits made The Hangover. Other than that, it’s severely overrated.
Where was I? Oh, yes. Bridesmaids is most definitely a “chick flick.” The trailer does not portray the film accurately at all. It’s about Kristen Wiig dealing with her best friend getting married and finding a new best friend. There is no bachelorette party. This was not the ensemble movie that it is supposed to look like.
Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne are the three female leads and the rest of the women from the wedding party make up a very small percentage of the film. Of course, it’s so much easier to shout words that people know and expect them to show up. Hangover! Girls! I’ll be there!
Of course, the best thing about this movie might be that American audiences are introduced to The IT Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd, who plays the love interest. Why is there an Irish police officer in the Mid-Western United States? Who gives a shit? It’s Roy. I was more inclined to wonder why Kristen Wiig was sharing an apartment with two British people. Is there a high percentage of people from the U.K. moving to Wisconsin?
As far as chick flicks go, Bridesmaids is great. As far as movies go, Bridesmaids is good. It has a little bit of everything. There is scatological humor, over the top SNL-esque humor, regular jokes humor. Then there’s the rom-com “will she get her life in order and make up with the people she loves who she has spent 90 minutes pushing away?” Luckily there are actual jokes written by funny people in there to keep it from sucking.
So if you want to see Bridesmaids, see it. You’ll enjoy it. I give you permission to see a chick flick. Show how modern you are by viewing a film starring women.

This review doesn’t make me want to see, nor avoid this movie.
BITE YOUR TONGUE!
I am concerned with the sequel, however. Typical Hollywood.

I’ve never seen The Hangover. Bradley Cooper can eat a bag.

were you playing with your phone when Galifianakis wasn’t on the screen? did you not see ken jeong’s awesomeness?
why am i arguing this?
May 16th, 2011 at 4:39 PM
Hold on. There are still drive-in movieplexes showing 1st run movies? Jarring.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:39 PM
I’m of the opinion that The Hangover is a bit overrated myself. Quick. Quote one line from the movie…. my guess is a lot of people couldn’t. Goes to show that it was more visual humor than funny writing. I’ve only seen it once though, so maybe that has something to do with it.

As a resident of the city, it was cool to see all the Milwaukee landmarks. The whole theater erupted in applause when the Milwaukee Public Market and Art Museum came on the screen.
As for the film, as I said in an earlier post, I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.

There’s one in my town. They have two screens, running double features all week during the late spring/summer/early fall. Sometimes they have a late showing of one specific movie. They tend to pair family movies on one screen and then more adult movies on the other one. 5 bucks per car load!
May 16th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
This is going to be the biggest problem. In the next 18-months there will be dozens of raunchy, R-rated, female driven comedies with the tag, “If you loved Bridesmaids, you’ll love _______!”

Count me as one who thinks the Hangover is overrated. Good but not a great comedy. I might catch Bridesmaids if it makes it to Netflix instant que.

Lost a lot of credibility right there

I tried to watch Out Cold with my roommate back in January. I loved that movie back in college. It didn’t have quite the same appeal when we tried this time.
Then again, I hated Hot Tub Time Machine so take that with a shaker of salt.

First enjoyable Ferrell movie for me since Old School. Talladega nights was okay for about the first 30 minutes I guess.

i’m always interested to know what people qualify as a great comedy. it’s such a wide ranging field of qualification…
personally a comedy that has staying power, like caddyshack, ghostbusters, old school, anchorman, blazing saddles, spaceballs, CHristmas vacation etc will be funny no matter what. i include hangover in that list.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:56 PM

The Hangover is as awesome and funny as advertised, in my opinion. It justs hits all the right spots for me and makes me laugh every time. Highly disagree about the “hangover is overrated” part of your post. Other than that, nice review of Bridesmaids. I’ll probably see that sometime in the near future.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
The Rob Riggle scenes are dynamite.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:59 PM

May 16th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
I agree it is subjective. I wouldn’t include Hangover on that list.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
Watching Blazing Saddles while high in college might be one of life’s great experiences. I laugh out loud just remembering it.
May 16th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
If you quoted it around your friends for more than a year, it was a good comedy. For me, those movies include: Meet the Parents, Dirty Work, Happy Gilmore, Saving Silverman, Anchorman, Old School and probably a few more.

Well before my time. I don’t think I saw that until the end of High School. I probably should have put Half Baked and Dazed and Confused on there though.

You obviously just don’t like America’s greatest singer/songwriter. Plus, Amanda Peet, how can you go wrong there? I mean, it’s not the Whole Nine Yards where she gets nekkid, but I’d lick Arby’s sauce from a Big Montana out of her cleavage.
What? Where did everyone go?
May 16th, 2011 at 5:10 PM
I’ve also never seen Fast Times. I know, I need to get on that.
May 16th, 2011 at 5:10 PM
Agreed, most of those comedies are all 20 minutes too long. 40yr old virgin, knocked up, superbad, wedding crashers…. I don’t really care about the unnecessary wrapping up of the relationship or whatever, just make me laugh.

May 16th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
Probably will seem dated to you, to be honest.
May 16th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
“Are you kidding me. I was first team all-state. I can make it rain out here.”
That was right when they got there though.. I’d say after the dinner scene it didn’t get very many laughs out of me. The Ferrell scene was overdone and really didn’t fit with the rest of the movie.

May 16th, 2011 at 6:14 PM
Have you ever seen ‘Smiley Face’?
May 16th, 2011 at 7:07 PM
Wiig is not funny, just tries to be weird which she thinks passes as funny. She is hot in a normal woman way (i.e., not movie star looks) but I don;t see flicks based on slightly above average looking hotties. And I never found one second of anything Maya Rudolph ever did amusing or funny and she’s not hot. So yea…
Furthermore, Rudolph, Poehler, Tina Faye and most of the other recent female SNL cast members have this weird ‘girl power’ thing going that I find obnoxious. I know that past female SNLers had to take major shit from the likes of John Belushi and Norm Macdonald…so fair enough, but it doesn’t make you interesting or funny (Tina Faye is the only major talent from that group, IMHO).
To sum up, there is no way in hell Im watching this movie. I also found the Hangover overrated (decent but not great) so Ill be damned if I watch a forced “female” version of it.
I know this comment won’t be read…just wanted to vent.
