Jay Mariotti Charged with Felony Stalking and Assault; Next Court Date is June 1st
Jay Mariotti, the former ESPN talking head, went and got himself in trouble again. In September, he reached a plea deal in a domestic violence charge against his girlfriend, but according to the LA Times, Mariotti messed up with her again.
Former ESPN sports personality Jay Mariotti has been charged with three felonies -– stalking, domestic violence and assault -– after he confronted his ex-girlfriend the same day a court ordered him to stay away from her, prosecutors said.
He pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the charges: stalking, corporal injury on a spouse or domestic partner, and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injured. He was also charged with two misdemeanor counts of disobeying a court order. If convicted, he faces up to five years in state prison. His next court date is June 1 before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz.
In addition to confronting his ex-girlfriend at a restaurant Sept. 30 — the day he pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor domestic violence — prosecutors said he argued with his former girlfriend again outside a Venice restaurant April 15. He allegedly pulled a chunk of her hair out and grabbed her cellphone, while shouting at her, prosecutors said.
If you didn’t think his sportswriting career was over in Septemeber, one has to assume it is now.

Goodness. The Internet was right about this one. Feel sorry for his ex-girlfriend. Of course, this is California, so he’ll get off free like all the other jackass California celebs.

I remember the wave after wave of glee and backlash after his first arrest. Media, fans, athletes all taking great pleasure in his demise. The funny thing is, usually there’s a backlash to the backlash in cases like this. After sustained abuse, people come out the woodwork with “alright, he has suffered enough. Shame on all of you for taking glee at his demise” type articles. But that really didn’t happen with mariotti. Just goes to show how reviled he was amongst his own peers.

Tony, I can tell you that here in state prison, that the food is nowhere near the quality of the ESPN cafeteria and that the service is deplorable. I tell you Reali, the prison rape isn’t even that exciting and the toilet wine leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Do not come to this state prison.
