Now this would be a good spot for Shaka Smart.

Great run for Gary at UMD. He took the program from being decimated by the death of Len Bias and probation to a National Championship. One of the last big coaches who refused to play the AAU game. He did more with less than any other coach the last 20 years. I am very glad that he got to leave on his own terms.

For the sake of beating Maryland as a UVA fan, I’m glad he’s retiring. But he was a hell of a coach.

Great coach. Did a lot more with a lot less than most coaches.

I still can’t get over Maryland beating IU in 2002, but he was a heck of a coach. Good for him to go out on his own terms.

This.
Gary also just got married to someone who looks to be a couple of decades younger than he. Props to that as well!

hah.

That wasn’t exactly surprising. IU beating Duke, now that was a shocker.

Knowing what we do now about Carlos Boozer it really isn’t that shocking that he would have biffed that bunny which would have won it at the buzzer

I’m still recovering from Jordan Williams leaving, now this?!? He’s always been my favorite coach of any team I grew up watching. He was extremely nice every time I met him; I really can’t say enough good things about the guy. He certainly will be missed.
I only wish he would have left before Jordan Williams decided to. The way that went down left a bad taste in my mouth.

Gary will be missed in the MD/DC area. He did alot more with alot less than most could have done. His recruiting is constantly questioned but I understand why local talent leaves. Route 1 is a less than appealing area to spend 1-4 years of your life playing basketball. KUdos to him for getting out when he did but he will be missed. No coach could sweat up a suit like Gary.
As for the young lady he married, he does frequent local watering holes quite often and drinks like a fish. Doesn’t suprise me he found himself a youngster..

He has always been great to the fans. You could approach him and talk hoops like he was just another guy. great “character” guy.
Its going to be a rough few years in Terp world…gonna be tough to get over this loss..
I could see Gary taking a year off and coming back to coaching though..I don’t think he’s done yet…

I was still in school at UMD when Gary won it all in 2002. Wasn’t at the games, but still one of my favorite sports memories watching the semis and finals with my friends on campus, then rioting on Route 1 after both victories. Also happy that he took a final shot at Yow on the way out too. What a dumb twat she is.

Great, outside of K and Roy, the ACC truly sucks now, so much for being the marquee basketball conference…
What happened with the whole Jordan Williams thing anyway? I know he put his name in a few weeks ago to test the waters, but since he decided to stay in a couple of days ago, I’ve heard that things went sour but no elaboration on the whole deal.
Being a Duke fan, I detest the UMD fans at Comcast, but they had a real bond with Gary and he fed off that. It kinda sucks that its gone now.

Boo to you sir!
Yea, after resurrecting his alma mater from it’s darkest days, Gary’s second greatest legacy will be his connection with the students and fans.

Hey you should know that Gary had a lot of nice things to say about K in a prerecorded video they played at CIS before K’s 1000 game at Duke. Its why a lot of Duke fans weren’t buying Debbie Yow’s bullshit about Gary trying to deep 6 NCSU’s coaching search. It didn’t fit with Gary’s personality. I have no doubt he hated Yow, but I think he was content she was gone and would have left it at that.

Truly101-
The boo to you sir is saying that you detest MD fans at Comcast. Duke fans at Cameron are pretty terrible to opposing coaches and players. Check their chants about GW and DJ Strawberry. It cuts both ways.
But yes Coach K and Gary formed a bond because of there intense rivarly on the court. Great games. And as much as I dislike Duke fans who did not attend the university I do respect Coach K and the program he has built.

I couldn’t care less about the chants. Saying “FUCK PLAYER X” or “PLAYER Y IS GAY” condemns itself but hurts nobody. Throwing shit like batteries, spit and other things at the other players, their families, their fans is unnecessary and bush league. I’m not condemning all UMD fans either. I spoke with some during the Duke/UMD football game at Wade in 2009, they were nice people and I have no problem with them. I just think you guys get a bit out of control at Comcast, especially when it comes to Duke. I’ll put it another way, I would not go see a Duke/UMD game at Comcast unless I had a gun, or at least a family sized can of mace, or a tazer or something.
Anyway, I’ll miss Gary Williams and I sincerely hope UMD can find someone worth a shit to fill his sizeable shoes

You are being over dramatic. I have attended somewhere in between 17-19 MD-Duke games in College Park. I have sat next to or near Duke fans, wearing Duke colors a number of times. I have never seen anything happen. The bitching of people like Jon Scheyers father was always a bit crazy to me. He hated the Scheyerface thing that MD students did so he started telling the press what a terrible place Comcast was to play. Comcast is safer for opposing fans than any NFL stadium I have ever been too.
There was a terrible incident 10 years ago (and it was in Cole not Comcast) and it was one person who did something really reprehensible.
Until you have attended a game at Comcast or I would imagine even Cameron you should really stop saying that you need to arm yourself to see a basketball game.

Been to several games at CIS, while there’s lots of yelling and what not, I’ve never seen our crowd throw shit AT opposing players, fans, etc. I’ve read of such incidents at comcast from other visiting fans, not just Duke (they tend to get the worst) I SAW it on TV just last year after that game where Greivis hit that fadeaway jumper to seal the win (that was an awesome game btw), but your crowd was throwing cups, ice, spit on our players during the post game handshake. Anyway we’ll have differing opinions on that, no point in going round and round on it.
Anyway, who do want as Gary’s replacement? Wright and Dixon are intriguing candidates if they want the job. Surely has to be easier to get a good bball coach at UMD vs NCSU.
