Suzy Kolber Made Mark Ingram Cry
I didn’t think ESPN had a particularly great draft last night. Except for Suzy Kolber.
Kolber had the draft’s definitive moment in the first round after New Orleans drafted Alabama running back Mark Ingram. Kolber went to her smart phone and read an email from Mark Ingram’s incarcerated father to his son, and in seconds the former Heisman Trophy winner was reduced to tears. After a few moments he said, “I want to tell my dad I love him. I miss you, dawg.” It’s the kind of moment that will be replayed over and over as long as the draft exists.
As for ESPN’s overall draft coverage, it was obvious the network needed to reduce the number of analysts on the set. In 2008 it looks like they had five guys (Kiper, Mort, Keyshawn, Young, Berman), and if memory serves, they rotated Tom Jackson into Keyshawn’s spot in 2009. I believe they stuck with five guys in 2010 (or was it six?), but scaled back to just three guys – Kiper, Gruden, Berman – this year. What was missing was the back-and-forth between Kiper and … anyone. He is at his best sparring with fellow analyst Todd McShay, something Sportscenter viewers have been seeing (and I assume enjoying) for months. The production felt … boring.
Gruden still “likes” every guy. He’s relentlessly optimistic about 99% of the picks, and even when a team needs to be called out, he’s not the guy for the job. With nobody to disagree with, Kiper also seemed reduced to simply liking every pick. Having only two voices also meant lots of extra airtime to fill, something Chris Berman was happy to oblige. I’m not sure viewers felt the same way.

OK, who has the best joke about Ingram possibly wanting to kiss her?

Suzy Kolber Make Mark Ingram Cry

So was Todd McShay sent back to the kids’ table?
And where did the Jon Gruden of the QB Camp go? That guy was honest! THIS GUY is anything but!
April 29th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
I tried to get the bar I was at to switch to NFL Network’s sound feed instead of ESPN’s. No dice. At least I had my friend beer to get me through that fuck Berman.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Has Mark Ingram always been that big? He looks heavy.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
I watched ESPN and then just as I was fed up with everyone and the horrible announcers, I realized I could have watched NFL network the whole time.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
I ended up quitting ESPN on TV and getting NFLN on computer. I prefer no Berman in my life.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
stood next to him yesterday and i’m taller than he is. he’s a brick, of course.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
I watched ESPN last night (DVR kept me from watching NFLN because it’s not on basic-expanded). My favorite moment was when Gruden tore Prince Amukumara a new one when he showed that he can’t play his college coverage in the NFL. And then he said he still loves the pick.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
But then you have to watch Deion and Irvin. Sometimes they try to out-ESPN ESPN.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
NFLN’s team included Deion Sanders, right? Don’t know if I could take that.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
stood next to him yesterday and i’m taller than he is. he’s a brick, of course.
yeah, but i bet he’s longer than you are.

Watched zero ESPN, stuck with NFL Network. It would be so great without Irvin eagerly diving into his rolodex of cliches and Deion being Deion.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
But then you have to watch Deion and Irvin.
yep. good thing for us we’re affiliated with the TXN network. Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Berman was able to work Favre name into the draft
/f’em both
April 29th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
At least with Deion, there are NEW retarded things.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Wait were you at the draft?
April 29th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Maybe he was one of the 492 people invited into the green room
April 29th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I thought Gruden was going to have a love explosion after the Titans picked Locker. I bet he had to change pants.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
i avoided espn at all costs, NFLN was OK, but i really wish the picks would happen faster with little commentary in between. most of the time the cameras were on the player talking on the phone or in the team’s draft room. boring.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Elijah Dukes needs to see this, proper use of dawg in an emotional context.
Were you wearing the gray JETS t-shirt?
April 29th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
I wish my dad and I had the kind of relationship where I could call him dawg and it would sound sentimental and poignant.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
gruden slammed julio pretty good; said his hands were garbage.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I thought I saw a guy wearing a jets jersey and giants hat.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I watched Mayock, so I didn’t see this until today. Really good stuff. Ingram seems like a cool dude (the one absent from prison).
April 29th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I didn’t start watching until this pick, but after hearing Gruden give Locker a tug job and berate for Kiper for using dreaded STATS! to confirm what we all know about Locker it was time to turn back to the NBA.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Didn’t watch any ESPN, stayed on NFLN all night. They kept Deon in small doses, which helped. Eisen, Mayock, Faulk and Irvin (truth be told, I will always enjoy the Playmaker) were really enjoyable. Could have done without Mooch. It sounds like he was doing his impression of Gruden, liking every pick.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Suzy Kolber Made Mark Ingram Cry”
probably b/c he realized her penis is larger than his.
and, did berman have a stroke recently? seriously, he had delayed thoughts and seemed shitter than usual.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
My dad prefers Twitter while he’s locked up.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
I hate life right now.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Also, not sure if this was the case for ESPN, but the quick pace of the 1st 8-10 picks made it so there were a lot of commercial breaks later in the draft. Left little room for analysis.

I was only looking at his mouth…
/ coop’d
April 29th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
The only thing that bothered me about the NFLN coverage, was they weren’t quick to go video of each pick, like ESPN does.
Other then that NFLN blew ESPN out of the water.
Mike Mayock is so good, ESPN doesn’t even have anything even close to him.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
After the Ravens/Bears/Chiefs fiasco, everything seem to fall apart everywhere. Nothing was happening, and it seemed like it took Roger Goodell 11 minutes to announce the Ingram pick.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
When does the second round begin?
April 29th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I call my dad ‘dude’ in a loving way. Its kind of our thing.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I found NFLN is much better than ESPN 3 years ago. It would be better without Irvin.
I wish I could call my dad my dawg. Damn it all!
April 29th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
You know, uh that or his Dudeness or, uh Duder, or you know el Duderino,If you’re not into the whole brevity thing.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
I liked how after the Patriots traded out of that pick we were again regaled with the story about when the Packers made a deal with them to get back into the first round a couple years back and used the selection on Clay Matthews…not like the Pats have trouble rushing the quarterback these days or anything
April 29th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
I hate life right now
no worries, big guy. julio will be a nice compliment to roddy. that passing attack should be unstoppable on 3rd and less than 10, especially if tony can give another productive season.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
+ 1 rug that really ties the room together.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
I know, they spent too much time turning Dan Connelly into a KR.

//Seriously, running team trades all those picks for a WR who has trouble catching?

Wow, that clip is awesome.

Will Diva-in-Training Roddy White hold his tongue when he gets 5 fewer looks a game?
April 29th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Ill: you assuming Julio can stay healthy.
April 29th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
They used that pick to get Darius Butler and Brandon Tate…. they’ve obviously done nothing yet but I’d say its too early to say.
/rationalizing because I hate that nappy haired neanderthal

You’re out of your element Donny!

Uncalled for
April 29th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
It’s all I could come up with. I was expecting you to retaliate with a “belt” picture.
April 29th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
I’d rather respond with this while pointing and laughing about the day the Packers acquired Greg Jennings
On the first day of the 2006 NFL Draft New England orchestrated a trade with Green Bay to move up 16 places from the 52nd overall selection to the 36th. To do this, the Patriots paired their 3rd round pick (the 75th overall) and their second rounder (the 52nd overall) and sent them to the Packers.
Bill Belichick and co. had their eyes on the immortal Chad Jackson, a wide receiver out of Florida. The pick, put simply, was one of the largest busts in recent memory for the Patriots. Jackson’s selection in the second round could only be outdone in the mistake category by the selection of Laurence Maroney just fifteen picks earlier in the same Draft.
The failure of the Patriots’ selections in 2006 was compounded by the fact that the Packers moved back in the Draft and were still able to select a Pro-Bowler at Jackson’s position.
Ol’ Ted’s got the better of The Bill a couple times now

personal pet peeve of mine: i understand why people completely freak out about millen on tv. i strongly disagree with why people are against millen working games, but i understand where his critics’ rage comes from.
but using that same standard, why in the hell does chucky get such a free pass? go look at his drafts in 2007 and 2008. there’s a reason why the dude is working tv.
but chucky of all people being a draft analyst is beyond the pale. add on how he loves everyone (hell, he even loved j.p. wilson coming out of alabama!), it’s an absolute slap in the face of thinking football fans.
i mean, chucky doing analysis of the draft would be like bruce pearl as a keynote speaker at an ncaa ethics symposium.
thank god for mike mayock and the NFL network!!!
April 29th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Also, where is Phil Simms retirement party? I have an edible arrangement I would like to send him.
April 29th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
chucky should know about bad hands. he picked michael clayton in the first round.
April 29th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
whooooa, whoooa, whooooa…since when can prisoners use the internetz??
April 29th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
OUCH! Seen her in person, and I thought she was pretty cute, although about 4 1/2 feet tall.
April 29th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
You kidding? I go fishing for love every day
April 29th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Bruce Allen made those picks–not Jon Gruden.
April 29th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Ill: you assuming Julio can stay healthy.
as a bama fan, i’ve watched him play well through injuries his entire tenure in tuscaloosa.
April 29th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
I really like the new draft format. Give all us degenerates a day to digest/discuss the first round. And the picks came fast and furious, way better than 5 hours for the first round.
April 29th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
2006 draft was a disaster.
April 29th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
Revisionist history is fun since at the time I was annoyed that if they were going to take a receiver in the 2nd anyway why not just take Jackson…I’ve since not gotten worked up over Packer picks since it’s folly (I was on Team Rodgers from the outset however)
April 29th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
trust me, bruce allen was a yes man to chucky. chucky had the final say on the draft. bruce allen was little more than a capologist.
