2011 NFL Mock Draft, Final Edition

I did a for-fun NFL mock draft in September. Then I did one in January after Auburn beat Oregon. I did a third NFL Mock draft after the Super Bowl when the order was set. My 4th NFL mock draft came after the Combine. Here’s my 5th and final effort. I only got six picks right last year, but I expect to double that this year.
Same strategy as last year: Look at who needs what, read the beat writers, try and see who worked out for whom, attempt to decipher who may be bullshitting and why, mix in some history and hunches and McShay and Kiper, and then read the beat writers some more.
1 Carolina Panthers – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
2 Denver Broncos – Marcel Dareus, DL, Alabama
3 Buffalo Bills – Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M
4 Cincinnati Bengals – AJ Green, WR, Georgia
5 Arizona Cardinals – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU [What the Cards' will do is supposed to be the first real question mark. I don't like Gabbert enough to take him in the Top 10.]
6 Cleveland Browns – Julio Jones, WR, Alabama [Remember in the earlier mocks when he was being pegged to the Rams to help Sam Bradford? Stock, skyrocketing.]
7 San Francisco 49ers – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri [Certainly not what I'd do, but 95% of what I read about the 49ers seems to indicate they're taking him. A big pick to start off the Jim Harbaugh regime.]
8 Tennessee Titans - Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
9 Dallas Cowboys – Tyron Smith, OL, USC [I thought for weeks Smith was a smokescreen to protect the DB they really want, but a friend keeps sending me this photo as evidence. My gut still tells me they grab Amukamara.]
10 Washington Redskins – Cameron Jordan, DE, California [My first true, 'huh?' selection. This pick is purely a hunch, based on these two tweets. They took a DE last year and it worked out. My backup pick here would be Jake Locker.]
11 Houston Texans – Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska [Yes, I have seen all the Aldon Smith chatter. Not buying it. The worst secondary in the league gets more help from a CB than a DE.]
12 Minnesota Vikings – Jake Locker, QB, Washington [This is a gut > beat writer picks I'm certain will be wrong. I'd take him here, though.]
13 Detroit Lions – Anthony Costanzo, OL, Boston College
14 St. Louis Rams – Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois [Everyone has him going here; I still think they need to protect Bradford more, or at least get him a skill player.]
15 Miami Dolphins – Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas [Go ahead, laugh. I hope it doesn't happen - I wouldn't want a talent like this going to a Jets' rival.]
16 Jacksonville Jaguars – Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue
17 New England Patriots – Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina [Everyone has him going higher, and some have even speculated the Patriots trade up for him.]
18 San Diego Chargers – JJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin
19 New York Giants – Mike Pouncey, OL, Florida [If I were doing alternative picks in each spot, I'd have Alabama's Mark Ingram here.]
20 Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri [About 10 spots lower than anyone else has him.]
21 Kansas City Chiefs – Gabe Carimi, OL, Wisconsin.
22 Indianapolis Colts – Nate Solder, OL, Colorado
23 Philadelphia Eagles – Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado [He is said to be Andy's Reid's guy, but if the coach gets overruled, I'd guess they get offensive line help to protect Vick.]
24 New Orleans Saints – Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor [I'd say one of the only certainties in the draft is that the Saints will go DL but you know how those predictions work ...]
25 Seattle Seahawks – Derek Sherrod, OL, Mississippi State
26 Baltimore Ravens – Muhammad Wilkerson, DL, Temple [Everyone's saying if Jimmy Smith is gone, the Ravens will trade the pick, but I think they fortify the DL.]
27 Atlanta Falcons - Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh. [Before you say I was following SI's Don Banks ... I predicted this pick in February.]
28 New England Patriots - Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama [The Pats will probably trade this pick or take Danny Watkins, OL, Baylor. But I felt like I had to put at least one RB in the first round.]
29 Chicago Bears – Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
30 New York Jets – Akeem Ayers, LB [Gosh I hope they don't take him. He ran slow at the Combine, and at 6-3, 255, I don't think he can be the impact pass rusher they need in the 3-4. But they can't take another OSU DE if Cameron Heyward is around, right? I really hope Wilkerson is available, and I'd even take Baylor's Phil Taylor.]
31 Pittsburgh Steelers - Aaron Williams, CB, Texas [The secondary needs work. Ike Taylor is so overrated.]
32 Green Bay Packers – Danny Watkins, OL, Baylor
Breakdown:
4 QBs in the first round (Newton, Gabbert, Locker, Mallett)
11 DL in the first round
7 OL in the first round
3 WR in the first round

Mark Ingram falling that late reminds me of Stephen Jackson falling to the Cowboys and then Parcells trading down.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
i mean, nevermind the fact he fits rex’s defense like a gem and he’s the polar opposite player in every way that gholston was…ALL OSU PLAYERS SUCK AND ARE ALIKE, HURRPY DERP.
heyward won’t get past PIT or NE.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
April 28th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
NO
April 28th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
They are going to trade out of this pick so that Howie Roseman can show everyone how smart he is.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
Cam probably doesn’t even read the bible.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I cannot wait.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I really think we’re going to see some trades. I think Arizona wants to get out of the 5 to grab Dalton or Ponder in the early 2nd.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I’d much prefer Heyward to Williams.
Ed Bouchette had his mock draft and had the Steelers picking Williams as well. This a week after he ripped Williams as being too slow to play CB.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
[If I were doing alternative picks in each spot, I'd have Alabama's Mark Ingram here.]
Yes, because the Giants really have a pressing need at RB.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Cam Heyward and Vern Gholston are very very different types of players
April 28th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
I read that earlier today by Domo. They need to move up so they can get Gabe before KC or Indy does.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Anybody have thoughts on Kerrigan? Pretty much ever mock draft I’ve read has him going to the Jags.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
bsanders might not like this too much.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Smart teams don’t think like this, if he’s the best value there it never hurts to have more depth at the position
April 28th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Kerrigan is a beast, and since he is white he is a high motor guy that ‘never stops’
April 28th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
That would be my preference, but I’d be stunned and impressed if they pulled that off.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
i still have nightmares about him killing the OSU OL and pryor for three hours in 2009.
he’d be a better fit in a 4-3 tho…i don’t see him doing well in space.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
I’d happily give a the Texans’ first and third this year to AZ for Peterson if he falls to five…
April 28th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
every time I read this I get more pissed. DO. NOT. WANT.
not sure what the “go ahead laugh” part is about. He’s interviewed with the Dolphins at least 4 times, which me thinks says they are pretty interested.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Jake Locker, QB, Washington [This is a gut > beat writer picks I'm certain will be wrong. I'd take him here, though.]
Fuck this shit.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
I watch damn near every OSU game and Vern was just another guy who sometimes made a tackle. Cam spent the past few years destroying people, completely blowing up opposing offenses almost by himself.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
that aint enough.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Smart teams don’t think like this, if he’s the best value there it never hurts to have more depth at the position
They have 2 very serviceable running backs. You don’t draft a back like Ingram for him to sit on the bench. Their O-line is going to shit, and that’s what they need. There are not too many good linemen in the draft or FA, and that’s why Pouncey makes the most sense.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska [Yes, I have seen all the Aldon Smith chatter. Not buying it. The worst secondary in the league gets more help from a CB than a DE.]
I don’t think he makes it all the way to the 10th pick.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
he mashed a season’s worth of stats into like five meaningful stretches of football and was invisible the rest of the time.
even the biggest OSU fanboi’s knew he was a bust.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
And this is a pretty solid list TBL. Aside from Locker, I see him falling. Accuracy is just too important, and he aint got none.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
he’d be a better fit in a 4-3 tho…i don’t see him doing well in space.
Jags mostly played a 4 man front last year, they experimented with a 3-4 at times in the previous year due to injuries.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
never really been impressed with akeem ayers…probably because UCLA is terrible.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
Why the Locker hate? Would you rather have McNabb, or do you think T-Jack’s going to be the starter?
April 28th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
Yeah. It’s not. Fuck.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
locker is a white t-jack…might as well use that pick at 12 on a DT since the williams’ wall is crumbling.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
No need to put a RB in the first round, teams are just not seeing return on the value using a first rd pick on a RB
April 28th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Why the Locker hate? Would you rather have McNabb, or do you think T-Jack’s going to be the starter?
I would rather have Joe Webb start this year and hope next year’s class is better.
T-Joke is gone. Mcnabb would be a nice fill-in, but he would cost picks that the Vikings need.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Swap firsts. Second. Fourth and Okoye.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
if i were NO or GB, id see a ton of value in ingram.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
It would be humorous if the ratings for the draft were in the tank this year. I feel that will not be the case.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
I’d really be surprised if the Browns go Julio Jones at #6, just can’t see it happening. I’m rooting big time for Cam Heyward, I think the’s going to be a solid Dlineman for many years. Also, he’s been dating my neighbor for quite a few years, so I’m biased. But most definitely rooting for the kid.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
I’d happily give a the Texans’ first and third this year to AZ for Peterson if he falls to five…
that aint enough.
Swap firsts. Second. Fourth and Okoye
what is this? madden?
/hillis for president
April 28th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Hakeem Nicks
April 28th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
that’d be an awesome pick…okung and sherrod as bookends for the next decade. wow.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
i wouldn’t in the slightest. heckert finds gems on the DL in the middle rounds.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Listen, I don’t know shit about the draft. It’s well documented. So, I have to ask… who is this person and why would the Bears draft him? I haven’t read a single mock but I know we need OL help if Jay and Kristin’s marriage isn’t going to directly lead to funeral in less than 3 years.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
I know everyone is projecting DL for NO. And there is a need.
But, if Ingram falls to NO don’t they have to take him? Wasn’t Pierre Thomas in Payton’s doghouse last year?
April 28th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Niners are going to take Stanzi in the 2nd or 3rd. Harbaugh will turn him into the next Steve Young. This is my dream, I will root hard for the Niners if it happens.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
he was suspended for a year from UNC, but is an absolute fucking beast.
big risk, but potential huge reward.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Listen, I don’t know shit about the draft
And neither do the rest of us. We just like talking about it now because at this point, all of us have access to the internet for stats and we think we know what our favorite team will do or should do.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
id think so…could you imagine ingram picking his way thru holes created by evans and nicks? the emmitt smith comparisons would be completely validated.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
It honestly doesn’t matter who the Bills draft in the first round. They’ll still suffer from a collection of lame asswipes on the offensive line.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Risk… like character? Or risk like Tommie Harris’ knees?
April 28th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Dude. The ONLY part of the draft I care about is who the Dolphins take…and we’re not fucking taking Mallet.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
risk like he could be the next kentwan balmer and he hasn’t played football in a year. also, his combine was preposterously good…might be a workout warrior. he has a decent bit of tape, but there’s still a lot of unknown qualities.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I would love it if Quinn dropped and the Lions got him. Fuck all these OL projects.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Absolutely. I can also imagine Brees picking teams apart because the linebackers and safeties have to stay home on play action.
/drools
April 28th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
probably the best fit for him tho…good OL, strong running game.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Anytime I see a mock with the Bears taking Baldwin I get a little ill. I’m ok with taking Austin if none of the OL guys are left, but OL better be their first choice otherwise.
He was one of the guys from UNC that got kicked off the team. Could have come out after his junior year and been a top 15ish pick, but stayed then got in trouble. Seems like a decent guy that made some mistakes, very talented player though.
April 28th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
I look at Mallett and all I see is train wreck…
April 28th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Dude. The ONLY part of the draft I care about is who the Dolphins take…and we’re not fucking taking Mallet.
probably the best fit for him tho…good OL, strong running game.
and all the cocaine you can blow in south beach!
April 28th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
He’s fucking Chad Henne with a hooch problem.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
he’s better than chad henne. chad henne was fucking terrible.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Thats probably pretty accurate by a trade value chart.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
I’d really be surprised if the Browns go Julio Jones at #6, just can’t see it happening.
i wouldn’t in the slightest. heckert finds gems on the DL in the middle rounds.
Same with WR’s….see Jackson, DeSean
I just think it’s a reach at 6 for Julio, find a partner to trade down w/ a couple spots and you can nab him there. But I have been hearing the Browns are trying to trade up a spot or 2, maybe Peterson? Maybe AJ Green?
April 28th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Can’t trade players this year, just picks.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
mostly because he hasn’t shown me anything that makes me think he is an NFL QB. I realize he didn’t have shit to throw to at Washington, but that doesn’t excuse him folding like a cheap tent against any team that played defense. he isn’t worth a #12 pick that’s for sure.
I also agree with what pki said, I say fuck it, give Joe Webb a shot.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Thats probably pretty accurate by a trade value chart.
i was just messing around. but trying to work a 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 is so Madden.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
peterson makes more sense.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
+0 wins over tOSU
April 28th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
I really hope the Niners don’t pick Gabbert, but that’s all I’ve been reading and hearing about out here.
As for my Steelers, I’ve been hearing they might be interested in trading up to re-unite the Pouncey twins, which I wouldn’t be too upset about provided it’s not a terrible trade.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
i really don’t understand it. he must be killing his workouts and interviews.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
.]
They took an O-lineman last year and a D-lineman two years ago. Orakpo has definitely worked out. The DC press and (mostly dreadful)local sports talk radio seem to be talking about Robert Quinn to the Skins at #10. I am ok with that pick.
They really need to pick D-line or move back and bolster there O-line before they make a luxury pick like a WR (Julio Jones) or take a risk on a QB.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Yes it is. I miss franchise mode from like 00′ that was the best.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
he’s interviewed with them a bunch, looks like you may be in for rough evening Trey, sorry man.
and Chad henne is fucking terrible.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Thanks Spence. Was curious. I suppose I’ll read some mocks since the draft is actually tonight. Do my standard of just checking who the Bears took tomorrow though.
So, this means Berman is going to be on TV tonight? I’m going to the movies.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
i remember him skipping a pass on a 7 yard out on either a sunday or monday night game last year. it was the single worst throw ive ever seen an NFL QB make and ive seen a lot of bad throws from browns QB’s.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
It could be the hair, who knows. I’d like to see them go defense and get Prince because Patrick should be gone by their pick.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
walterfootball.com is good read.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Austin could be a late first/early second rd steal. I could see the Pats taking him with their early second rd pick.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
This draft just seems deep as hell defensively. I’m just hoping the Texans either take BPA at 11 (team needs athletes) or trade down for extra picks to bolster the defense.
If Rick Smith decides to get cute I may just have to take a trip down I-10 to visit him…
April 28th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
If the NFL would not have scrubbed it from the internet…I would link to the Aaron Brooks Experience. You know the one.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
I just noticed this and surprised that nobody has mentioned it before but TBL has Da’Quan Bowers dropping out the 1st round..knee issues aside..I will be shocked if that happens
April 28th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
actually…yea. i take it back, henne. i totally forgot about aaron brooks.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
!
April 28th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Didn’t the Saint sign Shaun Rodgers? They would have Ellis, Rodgers and Will Smith on the D-line.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I just noticed this and surprised that nobody has mentioned it before but TBL has Da’Quan Bowers dropping out the 1st round..knee issues aside..I will be shocked if that happens
i think he’s going to detroit.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
yep.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
I feel bad for Chico Rivera. Cam is going to derail his head coaching career right from the start. All that pressure to play him in his first year as a HC.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Would rather the Bengals take Peterson or trade down and take Fairley.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Lombardi was saying on Simmons podcast that Mallet is a better Drew Bledsoe. All things considered that isn’t bad, wasn’t sure if anyone had mentioned that yet.
/starts dutifully reading comments
April 28th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Just a slight TJ, don’t mean to take over the draft post. Perry, D. Sedin and St. Louis are this year’s Hart trophy nominees.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
to be fair, mike lombardi is a huge asshole.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
I would love to see the Cardinals pick Peteson if Von Miller is gone (which seems a certainty). If both are gone, I hope they trade down to gain an additional 2nd round pick and go for an OT like Carimi or Solder or the guy from BC.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Newton seems like such a huge risk. Huge upside if he pans out but I wouldn’t take him before the late teens or early 20′s. Dareus, Miller or Peterson seem like sure bets. And then what the heck do you do with Clausen?
April 28th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
me too
April 28th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
excuse me kiper? dude had one good year.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
I could definitely see the Saints taking Ingram with their pick instead of D-line.
Spence- Is Rodgers still productive when motivated (which I know is a big if for him.)
April 28th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Ive talked myself into and out of every single QB in this draft. But I really hope Ponder is there for the bengals in the 2nd
April 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
when he’s motivated, he’s a top 5 DT. but motivation wasn’t his issue with the browns (surprisingly)…conditioning and health were the problems. that said, on 3rd downs he was a terror.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
/fuming with rage
//Thomas got jobbed
Here’s a football related TJ to make up for this, too. I still feel like it could have been funnier. I saw Stanzi and immediately had high expectations.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
i hear jay gruden is in love with dalton.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
I heard that may have changed given that the court ruling stated that things should be operating like “business as usual,” which seemed to suggest that maybe they could trade players.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Hakeem Nicks
/TBL draft’d
//good enough to be taken twice.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
I want no part of Fairley. But I’d love Peterson if he’s there
April 28th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Here’s a football related TJ to make up for this, too. I still feel like it could have been funnier. I saw Stanzi and immediately had high expectations.
The random fuck clemson made me lol
April 28th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
really? that’s not what his agent tells me.
/Kiper
April 28th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
With an immense woody for strong-armed QBs.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
I’m good with either one of them, though I might slightly lean towards Ingram. Bradshaw fumbles too much, and I don’t know how much Jacobs has left. Ingram is good enough to be a 3 down back with Bradshaw spelling him. The biggest thing the Giants have to do is find value at the LB, especially a middle linebacker who can play in the middle of the field, in the later rounds.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
I hate you.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Eh. I really just want Ponder/Mallett in the 2nd. If not them, I’ll be happy with a QB in free agency and just go after best available players.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
I am starting to think this is done to spite you, me and pki.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
i like kaepernick early in the 2nd too. he could be worth the wait while he learns the playbook.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Philly takes one of 3 guys….J Smith, Carimi, or Watkins.
I am still pissed they passed on Earl Thomas last year to take another shitty pass rusher in Grahm
I think Cincy drafts Gabbert
I would be trilled if Arizona lands either Von Miller or Peterson
April 28th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
/Sounds from my house if this happens
April 28th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Cheer up s1rweeze, 2 drafts ago I was upset every time I saw mocks with Freeman going 2 Bucs&friends still talk ~ my reaction at draft party when he was drafted.
Talked myself into him 1 week later&now 2 drafts down the road, get slightly disturbed about his lack of national exposure when people talk QB’s..You never know how things may pan out lol
April 28th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Mark Ingram to the Saints is just too good of an opportunity to pass up. He could be the next Vaughn Dunbar
April 28th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Please be Gabe, but it sounds like KC and Indy are on him as well.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
noooooooooooooooooooo! not another shitty tackle from BC.

Hoosier. Legend.

Freeman would certainly be the best case scenario comp, but I’m personally tired of “projects” that put up mediocre-at-best stats against sub-par competition.

I don’t feel so bad reaching for him at 28 in the commenter mock. My thinking is that the Pats probably want Sheard if they are taking a Pitt guy, but some a**hole took him ahead of me.

Don’t curse the lad with the weight of expectation just yet.

Gerard – who is this draft’s Alphonso Smith?
April 28th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I am so weirded out by the likelihood of all these QBs going so early. I was pretty sure watching Kaepernick last year a few times that he was going to be a Burt Emmanuel-type, i.e., a WR. And Andy Dalton? What’s to recommend him as a pro prospect over that shitty Wisconsin QB? My god. QBs are important because it’s so hard to find a good one. I don’t think you can manufacture a good one

AJC is reporting that if Julio falls to Detroit, Atlanta might trade up. I don’t see that happening, but it would be pretty sweet.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
I completely disagree. Ever Aaron Rodgers has a Kyle Boller. It’s all about what you do after you draft them. Only a few QB’s (Manning, NOT Brady) were can’t miss in any system.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
I didn’t really state that in the clearest way. They have to have identifiable skills to mold before you draft them. This bunch of noodle arms and/or Frankenstein-shoed dickheads has a combined one noteworthy skillset in the bunch – Mallett’s arm. Everything else is just hoping that they look more polished in the league than they did in college

Of course you put this up early TBL. Sad I missed it. Couple of thoughts:
Did you let JayV make this pick, since thats who he went with in the Commenter Mock draft. Nobody who is kinda paying attention would go "huh?" to this.
Hou needs a pass rusher more than a DB. Wade Philips needs/wants a LB to get to the QB from the edge. CB no matter how good they are can’t cover for 5 seconds.
I’d bet money the Colts have Sherrod much higher on their board than Solder.
I think this is the pick only if J. Houston is gone.
If Heyward is there, he is the pick. If not, than they will trade. If no good trade, then it’ll be Williams, but I think he is the worst case scenario for them. Also, Ike is the #1 C on the #1 defense for the last 7 years, why is he overrated?
Nice mock, though seems pretty chalk, especially the 1st 10 picks. last10 or so picks is going to be impossible to predict as many teams will be trying to get back in the 1st to get Dalton/Ponder/Kaepernick. Should be fun tonight.
/This is too long and everyone is probably gone, so nobody will read this.
//Not that anybody reads the comments anyways.

Have I mentioned recently that Joe Montana is a pedophile?
April 28th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
Remember when Edge James was selected before Ricky Williams? I could see that happening with AJ Green and Julio Jones. There so close, Green with better production Jones with better measurables if you can negotiate with Jones for less than Green at the 4th pick I might be worth a shot.
April 28th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Lombardi is retarded. I like Mallett, but he strikes me as a poor man’s Kerry Collins. His best years will probably not be with the team that drafts him.
April 28th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
You forgot the part where AJ Green has a clean medical slate, while Jones’ is a novel. I can’t imagine any difference in contract making up the difference in these 2.
April 28th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
I just don’t see ATL taking Baldwin. He’s too much of a risk mentally and I think he’s a lazy player.
April 28th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Green runs better routes, has stayed healthier and has better hands. There is no debate about which player is higher on draft boards. That is not to say Jones won’t be a better player, but going into the draft Green is ahead by a solid margin.

Ike Taylor is so overrated.
but no word on what he’s currently rated.
Also, Ike is the #1 C on the #1 defense for the last 7 years, why is he overrated?
he’s good, but like you say, he doesn’t have to do his job for very long with all that QB pressure. I personally have Ike Taylor properly rated. And he deflected that 28 yard 3rd down pass that Jennings caught in the Super Bowl, just not enough.
I am really really good at properly rating guys.
April 28th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
John Elway fucks goats.
April 28th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
Dirt, I agree. I think he is rated properly. I have no idea why he would be considered overrated. he is really good in coverage, just can’t catch INTs. I see J-Mac take pot shots at him, yet never explain it, though it probably has something to do with him rarely appearing on the Red Zone channel.
