Yardwork: Phil Humber One-Hits Yanks, Pirates Play in Front of Nobody
Pirates 4, Nationals 2 — It doesn’t get much better than this action shot from last night’s showdown between storied juggernauts, the Pirates and the Nationals. It would be one thing if it were the top of the first inning, but as you can see from the photo, it was the top of the fourth. And even if the weather wasn’t exactly ideal, it’s still inherently wrong to leave that lonely, loyal usher all by himself.
The poor fella should have at least been allowed to park himself in the front row and enjoy some baseball when literally no one is sitting in the entire section. As for the actual game, the bravado-filled Buccos, presumably angered by this photo being taken, scored four runs in the bottom half of the fourth as they made another valiant climb back to .500.
White Sox 2, Yankees 0 — The White Sox hadn’t scored in 23 1/3 innings and had Phil Humber, the third overall pick by the Mets in 2004, taking the hill. A blowout seemed inevitable, so naturally Humber had by far his best outing of the season, no-hitting the Yankees into the seventh until A-Rod singled with one out. After the game, Ozzie Guillen could not find a suitable establishment to have a late dinner. He’s the best.
D-Backs 4, Phillies 0 — With Cliff Lee going for the Phillies, Ian Kennedy stepped up and pitched a complete game, three-hit, 10 K shutout. But really, Ian Kennedy out-pitching Cliff Lee? What the hell was going on last night? Lee was no slouch actually, he struck out 12 over seven innings, but was killed by the long ball.
Blue Jays 6, Rangers 4 — If I’m a Blue Jays fan, I’m content with what I see so far from 23-year-old Kyle Drabek. Then again, don’t let that young age get your hopes up too much. See Hughes, Philip.
Reds 9, Brewers 5 — Jay Bruce hit a two-run shot and Bronson Arroyo covered all the bases, so why don’t you slide?
Padres 5, Braves 3, 13 innings — Ryan Ludwick hit two homers, the second one being the end-all, be-all walkoff shot in the bottom of the 13th. Dick Enberg implores you to touch ‘em all (his call was awesome), but MLB opted to instead give you the most pulseless walkoff call you’ll ever hear. Enjoy.
Angels 5, A’s 0 — It feels like each night there have been at least two guys throwing complete games. For Jered Weaver, this one would be his second in as many starts. His numbers on the season continue to impress: 45.2 IP, 26 H, 5 ER, 10 BB, 49 K. “Light that baby up” was an interesting call to end the game. Shout-out to Jeff Weaver?
Rockies 5, Cubs 3 — The Cubs committed four errors, three of which were committed by Starlin Castro and the other by starter Matt Garza, who admirably took the loss on his Troll Pencil Topper chin: “We lost tonight because I couldn’t throw the ball to first base. If I throw the ball to first base, it’s still a 3-3 ballgame and we’re still playing.” We’re days away from either he or Zambrano — preferably both — destroying the dugout with a bat. I can’t wait.

The Phillies would have to beg a $5 Vietnamese whore right now for a run.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Hi, were the NHL and we have an epic game 6 and two game 7′s tonight.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Or just wait for Daniel Hudson tonight. Ian Kennedy was pitching with new daddy fuel last night.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Hi, were the NHL and we have an epic game 6 and two game 7′s tonight.
Stay tuned. Hockey correspondant is on it.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Hi NHL, Phil Humber is still more awesome than you
April 26th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Put your swords away.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Bobrovsky is backing up Boosh tonight, as it should be. I full expect to see him come in now, so that we can come full circle and he begin and end the series in net.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
I’m a friend of hockey and looking forward to the Hawks game tonight (suppose the other one can exist as a flipback for when I’m pissed at the Bulls), just finding all the “More hockey posts!” comments a little grating…there’s more internet out there where such things are discussed
April 26th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
I thought I heard once that Olive Garden was on hit in New York.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
NBC you are here to listen and not speak.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
I’m not sure why more (if any) hockey posts are needed when every fucking post on here turns into a hockey thread anyways.
/Go Canucks
April 26th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Ozzie’s celebration when they finally scored a run was amusing…will be a sad day when he’s fired should this losing keep up
April 26th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
15 dolla they let you both score.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Hockey? Really? Sad day for baseball.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
There’s a hockey post coming. Have faith puckheads.
I enjoyed (read: threw several things at the wall) some baseball last night. Can’t believe there were still people left in the stands at Wrigley past the 6th. It was absolutely miserable… again. Rain, 40 degrees and just all around awful. Still disappointed in the Playstation network for letting those hackers take down their service. I can’t get MLB.tv in the living room so I had to watch Cliff Lee via gamecast after I was angry with the Cubs.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
these.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Agreed. Every thread is TJ’d by hockey talk yet we get maybe one baseball thread daily and the “more hockey” crowd chimes in. Jeez.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Clown got you too? What the hell, man?
April 26th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Ryan Braun is trying to make that awful contract extension look palatable. Dude is raking.
/Also, fuck hockey
April 26th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
You I’m not surprised with. And here I’ve been watching the Tribe…
April 26th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
to be fair, watching cliff lee is fantastic.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Catch 22
April 26th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
those aren’t mutually exclusive. ive tired of hating on the hockake and don’t have the energy to get worked up about it anymore.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Masterson gets the Tribe back on track tonight.

April 26th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
I don’t think they’ll fire him.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Not going to happen. Kenny knows it’s not Ozzie’s fault that his lineup of swing and miss guys are currently missing. Adam Dunn will remember how to mash taters soon enough. CQ at least had a promising start.
But fuck Gordon Beckham. He’s just a pretty face trying to play the role of baseball player. Alec Baldwin he is not.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
He’s awesome to watch. But it’s also awesome to watch him get no run support.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Drabek’s already got his TJ surgery out of the way. He’s good to go.
Jose Bautista – 8 HR, 11 RBI…further proof that RBI is a pretty worthless stat if you’re trying to evaluate a hitter.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:56 AM

Hoping to catch the Rangers v Jays game tonight. Drove by the Ballpark in Arlington last night, looked pretty cool from the exterior, if it’s anything like Cowboy stadium and American Airlines I’m sure it’s top notch.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
He’s my favorite Cane….that wears douchey Affliction-like T-shirts.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Oh, I know. I wanted to watch. It was 8:30 though and the motivation was low to move the Apple TV from the bedroom or relocate myself to the bedroom to watch it that way. Sharks-Kings was a good tilt and I watched that anyways.
Clifton gets my full attention when he pitches. Fantasy ace and I just enjoy it because he doesn’t walk guys so the action moves quickly.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
He got off to a terrible start last season too, him and the Fucking Cuban both seem to take a little time to get going which is frustrating…at some point though Dunn should remember he’s good at baseball and they’re get it going
If Humber can actually pitch a full season I’ll continue to support Peavy to the bullpen if and when he’s ready to go
April 26th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
His control is amazing and the ump was calling a pretty wide zone last night. Fortunately for the Diamondbacks he must not have their scouting report yet because young and Parra jumped all over a couple of first pitch fastballs.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Because you’re not around often, I have to ask Garland… who is the province of Ontario rooting for this evening? Are you siding with the Original Six or you native country?
April 26th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
I wouldn’t be surprised if Peavy never pitched in the bigs again.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
crazy’s the only thing keeping the meth sox around. why else would you watch them? certainly not for baseballing reasons.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Goddamnit. Another meeting. This one should be over by 11:45. I really wanted to get some baseball in before emotionally melting down in the upcoming hockey post.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
I would also like to have Dunn get better at baseball as well. Braun and Wright can not be my only sources of power. Also need Posey to get himself up to a .330 BA rate.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Yeah but the other team he considered in the offseason has a corpse batting leadoff so really six/one-half dozen on that one
April 26th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
I watch them when they’re playing the tigers. And maybe I’ll get lucky and watch a white sux fan rush the field and try to stab someone from the opposing team.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
yeah, sorry about that. it was just too easy to pile on.
hockake. that is so awesome. in other news, I am fairly certain that my Asian neighbors hosted a bukkake the other day. there was some weird shit going on over there.
/no racism.
//pissed I wasn’t invited
April 26th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
I was thinking about that earlier as well. it’s been at least 2 years hasn’t it? that ship seems to have sailed.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
He got hurt around midseason last year, it was in the middle of that big run they were on…time will tell
April 26th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
That picture of the Pirates/Nationals game made me sad.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Pop Pop Charlie needs to worry less about what people are saying/writing about him and more about the Phils’ bats.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Let’s go Buffalo! Mike Richards and Chris Pronger suck balls!
April 26th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Fuck hockey.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Well, that picture bodes well for getting tickets when I road trip to Pittsburgh for a Phillies game this summer.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
I don’t defend the Pirates attendance much, because it can be godawful particularly on weekday night games. But, last night was a) played through rainstorms, b) a make-up game from Friday night’s rain out (i.e., the game wasn’t even supposed to be played on a Monday night) and c) played during Game 6 of the Pens series.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
I think most people here are pulling for the Canucks but I’m going with the Hawks. Bolland is my son’s co-favourite player, along with P.K., so I don’t have much of a choice. The kid would probably shank me if I didn’t root for the Hawks tonight.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Beautiful stadium too.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
I’d still plan ahead – there will be more Phillies fans than Pirates fans.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
who will pitch more mlb innings this year?
Mark Prior
Jake Peavey
April 26th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
I think most people here are pulling for the Canucks but I’m going with the Hawks.
Go Sabres, who doesn’t have a soft spot for the Sabres?
Other series is tougher, a loss for the Canucks might cause the city to implode like the house in Poltergeist, but a win only prolongs the inevitable soul crushing defeat. Since I picked the Canucks before the series, I’ll stay with them
April 26th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
gotcha, I thought it was 2 years ago that happened. I also thought he was older than he was.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
That’s the spirit! I honestly don’t know what to expect if they lose tonight. I just can’t imagine what they do with this team going forward.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Lindy Ruff is a hypocritical child
April 26th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
I just can’t imagine what they do with this team going forward.
The Oilers will take Kesler off Mike Gillis’ hands.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
True.
But NO ONE sitting there is still pretty awesome.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Conclusion: contract the pirates.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Sabres can eat a dick.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
The Wings will take that playoff choke artist known as Kesler off your hands
April 26th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
It doesn’t get much better than this action shot from last night’s showdown between storied juggernauts, the Pirates and the Nationals.
holy crap.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Nice try guys, but no, that’s not going to happen. I was thinking more about a certain goalie for starters, and then of course there will be talk of the coach.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Vignault won’t make it to the podium before it’s announced he’s fired if they lose tonight.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
I don’t think so. Gillis has proven in the past that he’s not one to make quick decisions. Still, should be interesting.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
I don’t think so. Gillis has proven in the past that he’s not one to make quick decisions. Still, should be interesting.
Vigneault was hired by Nonis, not Gillis. If the Canucks lose, he gone.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
True, but Gillis spent a number of weeks with Vigneault trying to decide whether to keep him, sign extension etc. So I’d say V. is Gillis’s guy as well. And for what it’s worth, they did get the President’s Trophy this year, so it’s not like it was all a disaster. Look at Washington and Boston after similar experiences last year, what did they do coach wise?
April 26th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
One is totally different, one is slightly different.
Boston got to the 2nd round and lost one of their best centers to injury. The Caps did collapse, but they didn’t do it in this fashion. If the Canucks lose tonight, it is quite possibly the greatest upset/comeback in NHL history. And it’s to a team that Canucks fans and players alike hate. It’s not like the Nucks are getting Halak’d either. Crawford has been good, but he doesn’t have a 43 save shutout on his resume in this series.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
No but it’s safe to say he was the prime reason the Hawks won Game 6.
I’m not advocating keeping him or firing him, I just think it’s not as simple as lose they’re gone. gillis has always done things his way. That said, Something will have to be done, and this is quite likely one of the answers. Still, we haven’t even played the game yet!
Someone here said that the Canucks should just become like the Cubs, and embrace the whole being “cursed” thing
April 26th, 2011 at 5:11 PM
“Light that baby up” was an interesting call to end the game. Shout-out to Jeff Weaver?
“The Big A” refers to the big “A” out in the parking lot. It has a halo around it and they light it up when the Angels win……..However, there may have been some play on words going on there, too. He just wouldn’t admit to it.
