Jim Tressel Exchanged “Numerous Emails, Phone calls and Text Messages,” After Being Alerted Players Were Selling Memorabilia
Tresselgate: The Columbus Dispatch has revealed Jim Tressel exchanged “numerous emails, phone calls and text messages with the tipster, his star quarterback Terrelle Pryor and Pryor’s mentors” contradicting his initial claim he was scared and kept the information to himself after learning his players had exchanged memorabilia for tattoos. There’s no indication he alerted his bosses or Ohio State compliance. The emails reveal nothing substantial we did not know already. Without the content of the phone calls and texts, there’s nothing damning here. [Dispatch]

Didn’t we already know this? I’m honestly asking.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
So, the point of this post is what?
April 25th, 2011 at 10:04 AM
So, Tressel is out, right? Maybe they can add RichRod! HA!
April 25th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
initially, Tressel said he had no contact.
then it came out that he did receive an email from a guy.
now, more: emails, texts, phone calls.
what’s next?
i’m all for deny, deny, deny … but when you’re an employee of the state, how does he NOT know all of this is tracked?
April 25th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
No. The emails, phone calls and text’s existence is new. But, there’s nothing damning from them. Entirely plausible Tressel wanted to talk to his starting quarterback about football.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
So, the point of this post is what?
it answers anyone asking, where’s the OSU post?
/omniscient
April 25th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
at least you guys know that college football is a fun topic to talk about. don’t need much to start a convo.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
What TBL said. This just hammers home how full of shit OSU is about this whole mess. Tressel is in trouble, here. I didn’t think his job was in jeopardy when this first hit, but that is no longer the case. The NCAA could put pressure on the Admin at OSU to distance themselves from Tressel a la Tennessee and Pearl.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Notable, not earth-shattering. Which is why it’s in a 1-liner.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
The real crime here is that we’re going to have to see more of that dipshit E Gordon Gee.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I was hoping this post would at least have a pic of Tressel in that ridiculous camo outfit from Sat.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
Duffy. Not to criticize, but this post is missing an important piece of media.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
I think OSU will get hit with some lost schollies and probation. I don’t see them getting any bowl ban or B10 title game ban. The lost schollies will hurt though, especially in the B10 where oversigning is verboten.

nice jumping off point for some irrational ranting, which can hopefully devolve into some high quality regional pissing matches.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
Was hoping there was going to be an institutional control charge, but there wasnt. Just ethical misconduct and playing ineligible players.
He’s finally embracing my “Tressel is Hitler” contention.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
So, the point of this post is what?
It’s connective tissue to something bigger later on.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
how can you be a football fan and NOT love this sentence?
Ohio State University is potentially facing the most severe NCAA penalties to its storied football program as punishment for coach Jim Tressel’s failure to disclose his knowledge of violations and use of ineligible players during this past season.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
At least osu can keep the sugar bowl win regardless of what happens
Tressel’s slumpbuster lives on!
April 25th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
What else needs to come out for Tressel to get the boot out of Columbus?
And who is releasing this info to The Dispatch? It just says they obtained documents in their article.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
odds Tressel is coaching this fall?
i would have said 2:1 but now i’m starting to think maybe it’s closer to 5:1?
April 25th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
I’m just outside the County Courtroom where an argument
about chowder has spilled over into the biggest trial in Springfield history. Behind these doors, a federal judge will ladle out steaming bowls of rich, creamy justice in a case the media have dubbed “Beat-Up Waiter.” This reporter suggested “Waitergate”, but was howled down at the press club.
/ obligatory Simpsons’d
April 25th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
They got the phone records via FOIA request.
Are you sure? I though when even 1 ineligible player plays the game is forfeited.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
I don’t follow you. I love CFB and I don’t particularly like it when teams get hit for this stuff. I want the best teams playing good ball. It’s better when USC is good and the ND-USC game matters, for example.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
The NCAA cleared them for the Sugar Bowl…which is hilarious.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
I really, really, really want this ‘scandal-gate’ thing to die a horrible death. Cant we start a revolt against it somehow?
April 25th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
“Say it Frenchie!”
April 25th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
They were doing something to honor the military @ the spring game. Players had some sort of camo helmets
/still looked ridiculous
April 25th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
The funniest part of that episode:
Homer: What does “sequestered” mean?
Skinner: If the jury is deadlocked they’re put up in a hotel together
so they can’t communicate with the outside world.
Homer: What does “deadlocked” mean?
Skinner: It’s when the jury can’t agree on a verdict.
Homer: Uh huh. And “if”?
Skinner: A conjunction meaning “in the event that” or “on condition
that”.

Ohio State to be Auburn’s scapegoat. Or something.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Duffy?
April 25th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
this:
does not compute with this:
April 25th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Never!
April 25th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Ya, NCAA sent out the list of infractions against osu this morning; NCAA cleared the players so they can keep the bowl win. By the time this is all done osu will have another underrated season. 1-0
Also FWIW gene smith has said all along as long as no new rule violations come out, tress is going to survive this
April 25th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I mean, do I really have to beg for it?
April 25th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I thought there was NO chance Bruce Pearl would not be Tennessee’s coach next year.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Funny, it was never plausible Cam went to Auburn to escape the shady money deals at Miss. State.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Also FWIW gene smith has said all along as long as no new rule violations come out, tress is going to survive this
and don;t forget, tressel still hasn;t fired gordon gee
April 25th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Of course he’s going to say that, but when the NCAA comes calling, Tressel will be thrown under the bus to protect the school. That’s just how it is.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
that would’ve derailed the biggest story in college football history, no?
April 25th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Both are bullshit. Cam/Cecil took money and Tressel tried to cover this up.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Oh I know husker, but I’m thinking that would be in play if the NCAA was throwing in failure to monitor or lack of control. Since they didn’t…
April 25th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Exactly.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
You’d make a great juror for prosecutors everywhere.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
TBL…how can you hate a program so much considering you don’t watch any college football?
April 25th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
sobs uncontrollably.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
You’re right. Cam and Cecil are totally clean and nothing shady went down at all. Completely on the up and up.
/hilarious
April 25th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Imagine if the biggest story in college football history involved the most exciting player in coege football history. Th Internet would have just up and exploded
April 25th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
I never said any of that.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
You’ve insinuated it for the past 6 months.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
that’s a leap of faith, bro.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I’ve insinuated an alternative scenario is plausible. That it is plausible Cam/Cecil never took anything. Personally, no, I don’t think they received any money from Auburn, but even if they didn’t, that doesn’t mean nothing shady went down. I think Cecil screwed up with Bell, Rogers, et al. And that’s it.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
to rittyrich’s credit, I think it’s more apt to say he’s been saying “nobody knows what happened but there wasn’t even enough evidence for the NCAA to make anyhting of it” for the past six months. I think he’s also acknowledged that shady shit happens all the time in college football and wouldn’t besurprised at all if there was some shady stuff behind Newton being at Auburn.
just my take on his position.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I think it came from boosters, not the school itself.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
As far as I’m concerned, boosters are Auburn.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
Thanks for the objective endorsement. Husker doesn’t care though as he’s stuck in the role of being my commenter nemesis.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Not at all. I just find it funny that you are such a devoted Cam devotee. If you weren’t an AU fan you’d probably not be so lax in judgement. You claim my distrust of AU is driving me, but you’re allegiances work the same way. Again, it’s plausible that Cam is clean, but if you had to bet your life savings, I suspect you’d bet against it.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
dammit, Husker. read this:
ritty JUST wrote that.
April 25th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
I know that, but him saying “something could have happened” doesn’t mean he thinks something did happen. He also wrote: Personally, no, I don’t think they received any money from Auburn
April 25th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
fuck the ncaa.
April 25th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
that doesn’t mean he thinks that Cam is completely clean. I really think your hatred of Auburn clouds your reading comprehension in this case, Husker. I get it, brah. as soon as something comes out about Bammer or Florida, Ima be all over that like a duck on a junebug.
April 25th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
I AM THE ENIGMA!
April 25th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Yet he defends Cam (and AUB) as though they are.
April 25th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
I stand by Auburn’s and the NCAA’s decisions to let Cam play for Auburn in 2010. From what I know and who I know, my opinion is that our compliance department went above and beyond in declaring Cam eligible given the NCAA’s current rule and regs.
April 25th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Well you wouldn’t know, would you?
April 25th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
I don’t think Husker is displaying animosity toward Auburn. Rather, and justifiably, the animosity is directed toward those who giddily grab their ankles for their favorite schools/players. Like Spencer does for OSU.
