If the Magic Lose Tonight, Rev Up the Dwight Howard Trade/Free Agent Speculation
If the Orlando Magic fall into an 0-2 hole tonight against the Atlanta Hawks, brace yourself for depressing, panicked writing in the Orlando Sentinel, and immediate, rampant speculation from everyone else about Dwight Howard’s future in O-Town.
Howard’s a free agent in 2012. The 3-time defending NBA Defensive Player of the Year is the jewel in a class that could also feature Deron Williams and Chris Paul. If the Magic have learned anything from teams who were in this spot before them (Cleveland, losers; Denver, winners) they must act quickly.
The Cavs tried (repeatedly) to surround LeBron with the necessary wingmen to win a title. The pieces never quite fit, he passed on the extension but gave the Cavs a shot, and then he took his talents to South Beach. The Nuggets tried to get Carmelo Anthony to sign an extension, but he forced a trade instead, and they fleeced the Knicks for four cheap players under the age of 26, a 1st round pick and two 2nd round picks. (I know some of you will find ‘fleece’ too strong of a word, but I’m fine with that.)
Obviously, Orlando will hope Dwight Howard signs an extension with the Magic, but an early postseason flameout (regression for the 2nd straight season after a trip to the Finals), plus a lengthy lockout and Orlando unable to do anything in free agency due to a maxed-out roster don’t bode well for the Magic. So GM Otis Smith needs to think seriously about trading the franchise rather than losing him for nothing (like Cleveland lost LeBron).
Among the teams you’re likely to hear will be in the mix:
Houston – Lots of future draft picks to dangle, but not much young talent. Patrick Patterson? Brandon Bass already does what he does, only better. Goran Dragic? Bring Courtney Lee back? Would the Rockets part with Kevin Martin? If they would, then Howard goes to a team without a partner-in-crime.
Golden State – Would the Warriors offer Stephen Curry, Dorrell Wright and Biedrins? The problem then becomes the Nelson/Arenas/Curry point guard shuffle. So if you swap Monta Ellis for Curry, do we have something? (Can’t imagine the Magic bring back Jason Richardson.) That would leave the Magic with a shrimpy backcourt of Nelson and Ellis, but a high-scoring one. And no post game to speak of, since Bass and Biedrins only excel at rebounding.
Indiana – Would they want to break up what appears to be a solid nucleus? Here’s the thing – they’ll have cap room to make some moves … what if Indiana packaged Posey’s expiring, Hibbert, Hansbrough, Rush and Dahntay Jones? The salaries don’t quite match, but Indiana would then have Howard, Granger, Collison, and promising Paul George to build around. They would have a decision to make on McRoberts or Foster, both of whom will be free agents.
LA Lakers – Obviously, an attractive franchise, but what bargaining chips do they have other than Andrew Bynum? And would Howard want to go to an old team with no other young talent? Oh, my bad, the Lakers are slated to get Chris Paul …
New Jersey – Could be the favorite if Deron Williams re-signs. Are they attractive because of Brook Lopez as a No. 3 option, or are they an attractive trade partner because the Magic might actually like Lopez in return? Less attractive: Throw-ins like Outlaw and Morrow.
New York - They’re here because I’d be too depressed to write this without including them. The Knicks obviously need a point guard ahead of a center, but if there was a way for the Knicks to suit up CP3, Melo and Dwight Howard … ok, I’ll stop dreaming now.
Sacramento - Longshot, but wouldn’t it be fun if the Kings moved to Anaheim, and decided to bring a star with them? Cousins, spare parts, and a pick or two isn’t a bad jumping off point.

shhhh…
April 19th, 2011 at 6:58 PM
I must have missed the NBA making the 1st round best of 3. TBL, I swear you enjoy these speculation post more than what actual happens NBA.
April 19th, 2011 at 6:59 PM
Fleeced is too strong since the Nuggets also included Billups and a couple other guys. If it was just Melo, then yea.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:01 PM
they fleeced the Knicks for four cheap players under the age of 26, a 1st round pick and two 2nd round picks
You know, the Lakers gave up 4 players (2 expiring contracts and 2 young players) and 2 first rounders for Pau Gasol and I’ve heard they gave up nothing. Potato, potahto, eh?
April 19th, 2011 at 7:02 PM
speculation rocks.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:05 PM
What if the Miami Heat called and offered chris bosh straight up for Howard after Howard demands a trade
April 19th, 2011 at 7:06 PM
That’s because you can really only write once, maybe twice on what happened during a game. You can write endless amounts of speculative posts during the dry season.
/More baseball please
April 19th, 2011 at 7:06 PM
Billups is a positive?
April 19th, 2011 at 7:07 PM
Orlando needs a new front office to replace all the people that died laughing.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:08 PM
Instead of Douglas starting and having some other random dude backup, yea.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:08 PM
Ha! Good call CRM. I skimmed right over that one. Chris Bosh fleeced Dwyane Wade into giving him that contract
April 19th, 2011 at 7:09 PM
This article, while necessary at some point, is about a week early.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:10 PM
Knicks 103
Celtics 88
is my prediction.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:11 PM
Landy Fields, make your damn free throws, son. need every point
April 19th, 2011 at 7:11 PM
I love that the Orlando Sentinel article got one and a half stars.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:12 PM
Where is that comment CRM?
April 19th, 2011 at 7:12 PM
does Orlandos front office not die laughing from any of the offers mentioned in the post?
April 19th, 2011 at 7:12 PM
Have any commenters from NYC ever been to Bourdains old restaraunt, Les Halles? The episode where he goes back and works the line was on today and the food looks really good.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:13 PM
93 seconds.
0 points.
yeah, I’m nervous
April 19th, 2011 at 7:13 PM
call Otis Smith and ask him. what trade offers do you have to bring to the table?
April 19th, 2011 at 7:13 PM
What about Utah? Howard in the middle with Jimmer running the point and Gordon Hayward on the wing? They contend for the Western conference title for the next dozen years easily.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:14 PM
Wow, the prices aren’t that bad, surprisngly.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:14 PM
Sick. Give up Al Jefferson and picks and the Jazz are in business. Jimmer will be D12′s new Redick!
April 19th, 2011 at 7:14 PM
Doubleheader over on MLB Network tonight. Halladay vs. Brewers and Braves vs. Dodgers with (hopefully) Vin Scully.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:15 PM
If that actually happens hopefully coach Brian Shaw will be smart enough to throw out the triangle.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:15 PM
So Carmelo is everywhere so far.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:15 PM
Dwight Howard to the Anaheim Kings!

I’m watching The Daily Show repeat – Stewart is doing an awesome job of parodying Beck.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:16 PM
Damn it. Knicks game on right now plus I’m working UK baseball, but otherwise I’d check out both.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:16 PM
I dont think the NBA has clauses where the player has to sign off on a trade, but any team making a move for him is going to want a guarantee that he’ll sign long term.
Meaning the teams based in NY or LA about the only options, because D12 considers himself an actor, comedian, entertainer, rapper, oh and he occasionally practices free throws too.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:17 PM
Did you look it up? It’s got a huge menu. I guess that’s what makes it a ‘braisserie’. I think that’s how that word is spelled.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:18 PM
Wife has told me we are eating dinner in the 2nd qtr and i have the baby in the third. He was with me in the 4th Sunday during the collapse. it actually helped me hold it together
April 19th, 2011 at 7:18 PM
Yea. Of course you have to remember it’s in NY so the prices are going to be relatively high, but other than the Ribeye for two it’s not bad.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:19 PM
Dwight Howard the comedian deserves a fiery death. I like him as a baller, though
April 19th, 2011 at 7:19 PM
Next year…next year…
April 19th, 2011 at 7:20 PM
hit him hard, Turiaf
April 19th, 2011 at 7:20 PM
Turiaf would murder you, Rondo.
April 19th, 2011 at 7:47 PM
Turiaf would sooner injure himself than kick any players ass.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:07 PM
any team making a move for him is going to want a guarantee that he’ll sign long term.
All of this. It’s going to play out the same as Melo if he demands a trade where he’ll dictate where he goes and Orlando would have to make a deal with that team assuming no one wants to rent for a season and try to convince him to stay (and Denver did a pretty damn good job in this situation). Another question mark is the new CBA and if as rumored there’s something similar to a franchise tag and what the new cap structure will be.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:12 PM
Knicks need to run offense through Melo.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:13 PM
Stern will drive him to LA himself.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:14 PM
You do realize he is french, right?
April 19th, 2011 at 8:18 PM
Don’t like basketball turning into baseball when it comes to free agency. I think for long term health of the league, the team that drafts a player should have the upper hand in retaining them. I love that a small city like San Antonio can build and sustain a long term championship contender.
I hope for next CBA, they stack the odds in favor of teams being able to retain their own players.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:23 PM
amare out with back spasms
/brittle
April 19th, 2011 at 8:25 PM
I hope for next CBA, they stack the odds in favor of teams being able to retain their own players.
I like this idea. That is the one reason I like the way the NFL is now with crazy rookie contracts. It penalizes a team that drafts like shit. What kind of advantages could be put into the NBA to make it easier to retain a player? Other than more money or would that be it?
April 19th, 2011 at 8:31 PM
It’s already like that. Cleveland was able to offer more money to lebron than any other teams under the rule. But the difference wasn’t large enough for lebron to stay. They just need to widen that gap as to what your current team can offer you compared to someone else.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:33 PM
Melo time with amare out
April 19th, 2011 at 8:35 PM
amare- now is the time for your willis reed moment!
April 19th, 2011 at 8:36 PM
They just need to widen that gap as to what your current team can offer you compared to someone else.
Does the NBA have a restricted FA period like the NFL does? Draft picks could help teams out if a guy signs somewhere else.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:38 PM
Danger spot. Melo don’t want it
April 19th, 2011 at 8:43 PM
sounds like stever kerr is angling for knicks gm job the way he’s blowing the knicks on tv right now
April 19th, 2011 at 8:46 PM
Dwight Howard is a bitch. A loser. Got no heart. Hell, he actually does. It’s a silly heart.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:49 PM
yeah they do. I don’t know if it’s exactly like the NFL though.
April 19th, 2011 at 8:55 PM
amare done for the night
no willis reed moment
/wah waahh
April 19th, 2011 at 8:58 PM
no billups. no amare. Wow, if the knicks weren’t from New York, I would feel really sorry for them.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:08 PM
Melo’s in beast mode
April 19th, 2011 at 9:10 PM
Can’t believe people were saying Amare’s a better scorer than Melo
April 19th, 2011 at 9:12 PM

April 19th, 2011 at 9:26 PM
Ooooo, sick shot. Pierce fouled him too.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:27 PM
melo bout to choke a bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 19th, 2011 at 9:33 PM
This is what the NBA is supposed to be. Melo putting New York on his back with Amar’e and Chauncey out.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:35 PM
wow Jared Jeffries. who would have guessed?
April 19th, 2011 at 9:35 PM
pierce or allen?
April 19th, 2011 at 9:37 PM
Let the game end and if someone misses then I’ll say it should have been the other guy.

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_bianchi/2011/04/dwight-howard-is-a-greater-defensive-force-than-celtics-legend-bill-russell.html
Apparently Dwight Howard is a greater defensive force than bill russell. And did you know that this point is proven every time he blocks the ball into the stand.
I guess blocking the ball into the hands of a team-mate is wildly overrated.
/bianchi is an idiot
April 19th, 2011 at 9:40 PM
I’m sorry what? Did the ref just stop the Knicks from playing defense, ask Garnett if he would like to call timeout, and then allow him to call timeout?
April 19th, 2011 at 9:40 PM
That’s the Jeffries we all know and love
April 19th, 2011 at 9:41 PM

Jared Jeffries with a cowardly Charles Smith impression. Got to put up a shot there.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:42 PM
TBL is watching the game on DVR and is about 4 minutes behind. Get ready for the pending twitter meltdown.
/but hey, knicks fans, at least Melo didn’t take the last shot.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:43 PM
I was stunned to know that Jared Jeffries was still in the NBA.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:43 PM
Mecca
April 19th, 2011 at 9:46 PM
Jefferies……..damn
April 19th, 2011 at 9:47 PM
Melo took a shit at halfcourt in game 1
Jefferies took a shit at baseline in game 2
Who’s gonna foul the free throw line in game 3?
April 19th, 2011 at 9:49 PM
not as devastating as the game 1 loss. no amare? Should have been over in the 3rd qtr. Knicks bench showing some toughness.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:50 PM
much respect to carmelo. Really stepped up there. I hope the knicks can tie this up in New York.
April 19th, 2011 at 9:59 PM
Tough to blame the Knicks for this loss since that pass to Jeffries should have gone to Amar’e, who wasn’t there.
Still 0-2 and in a must win situation now.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:08 PM
It wasn’t over in the 3rd, because their best player went on an incredible run and put what was left of that squad on his back.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:13 PM
Do you even watch these games?
The Knicks bench was horrible. Carmelo kept the team in it in the 2nd half. To claim the Knicks bench showed toughness is downright retarded.
The only bench player to contribute anything really was Jeffries.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:20 PM
amare & billups have 2 days to get healthy, and then the season is on the line friday. it can be done, knicks.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:21 PM
Knicks showing some sack this series, annoyed that I missed all but the final 3 minutes
April 19th, 2011 at 10:22 PM
no. 2nd game in a row it was better than Boston’s.
Bill Walker, Roger Mason & Jared Jefferies were on the floor the final five minutes. they barely would play in a regular season game.
Defensively they were solid against vastly superior players (Mason was nice on Allen), Walker rebounded well … they don’t need them to dominate, just not totally F up.
when Boston went to its bench, the Knicks got back in it both times.
Obviously Melo was the key. amazing performance.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:24 PM
see if you can catch the replay on NBA TV. it really was a great game. Marv ALbert was hilarious – listen to his voice when anyone other than Melo scored
April 19th, 2011 at 10:24 PM
Bill Walker through up an incredible 0-10 for the great Knicks bench!
This was all about CarmeLOL and nothing else. Dude put on a clinic, except when it comes to fouling at the end of games.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:33 PM
So because the Knicks bench outplayed Bostons bench that means that they showed toughness??? Ok.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:34 PM
No NBATV for this guy on my cable…I’d be pissed about not getting Bulls-Pacers Game 3 Thursday but in an effort to make something of my life I have class that night anyway
April 19th, 2011 at 10:35 PM
Keep hope alive for the Black Hawks. They can do it!
/got more hawk faith than SC
April 19th, 2011 at 10:38 PM
Bill Walker was actually 0-11.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:39 PM
Rondo was 13 of 23 with 30 points??? WTF.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:41 PM
I’m pissed none of the hockey elite are around. Would love to talk cap space. I’m trying to block out the Tribe losing. Now that they have had an unexpected hot start. I have become emotionally involved. At least I can still fall back on the Wing tonight.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:46 PM
I’m not “elite” but we could talk about the Kings taking it to the Sharks early….
April 19th, 2011 at 10:47 PM
Amare didnt play the 2nd half with fuckin back spasms?!
In the playoffs?!
Jay Cutler approves. Fuckin pussy.
April 19th, 2011 at 10:53 PM
The Tribe won’t die 5-4 bases loaded
April 19th, 2011 at 11:00 PM
Bstr
I consider you the “elite” alongside Geez and a few others. At least you’re rational and have yet to call me some tin foil Wing fan.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:04 PM
Well, after what I just saw from the Canucks you may have caught me at a bad time! Just a pathetic game overall.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:07 PM
just saw the score at 5-1 in the 3rd bstr. how did it happen? did anyne go after the guy who took out seabrook? tell me bolland scored and hawks finally screened luongo
April 19th, 2011 at 11:08 PM
I didn’t watch much of the game. I’m anticipating a Nucks/Wings WCF. I think the Wings can neutralize the Sedins. Z Bert and Cleary can do the job. Kesler will have his work cut out with Dats and Mule. Flip is rolling. Wings “4th line” is the best in the league. I really like the Nucks D, real solid. And of course Bobby Lou is better than Jimmy.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:10 PM
i didnt ask you
April 19th, 2011 at 11:10 PM
hee
April 19th, 2011 at 11:15 PM
Sort of, Canucks just decided not to play. Didn’t hit, didn’t attack the puck nothing. Bolland scored a couple I think, but no one laid a hand on him. they just let guys walk in on Luongo. The comment was made by the commentary crew that they played ‘not to lose’ and it kind of looked like it. Luongo even kept them in it the first period. and then, of course, the third period got very chippy- five guys in thepenalty box stuff. Torres and Scott were thrown out of the game for “talking to each other” on a face off.
I may have my own tin foil hat on, but it seemed like the refs were jumping at everything, scared of it getting out of hand. Oh well, long way to go to get concerned.
and Vlad I would love to see that WCF. If it’s entertaining – and that would be – I’m fine. When it’s a dog of a game like tonight it’s no fun at all.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:18 PM
i think sc has one sparkler lit
and thanks bstr
April 19th, 2011 at 11:26 PM
I know. I just want the games to be called both ways. Not dictated by the score but the game. If the refs let shit go in the 2nd period that’s fine. But don’t start calling it in the third late. I watch alot of these games. And it drives me even more mad when I watch in the East become the wild west late but its another story in my teams game. I just want a little consistency.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:33 PM
Tonight was just an over reaction to the last game and “the hit” in my view. It started with Keith going after someone and from then on it was just crazy. All the physicality was taken away, and the third was just a gong show. I actually think the refs did a decent job shutting down the funny stuff in the third (never seen two guys kicked out of a game for talking during a face off), but game was out of hand by then. And yet, because I love torture, I watched right to the end…
April 19th, 2011 at 11:39 PM
I got a question for ya. Is the Bertuzzi hate out of line? I’ve seen that play a million times. If those Av’s don’t jump on Bert’s back it isn’t an issue. That is what caused the damage. I really like Bert. He seems like a genuine nice guy. He made one mistake that was blown to gigantic proportions beyond his control.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:42 PM
vladdy how did you feel bout bertuzzi before he came to the dark side?
April 19th, 2011 at 11:46 PM
Bertuzzi was one of the best players in the league before that incident. I thought he was getting revenge on a cheap shot by Moore. And I think Moore was a no talent thug. I’m not a hockey expert but I always thought Bertuzzi got a raw deal for one bad lapse in judgment. He ended Moore’s career apparently – but did he really have a career?
April 19th, 2011 at 11:47 PM
did he really have a career?
he had a paycheck. then he didnt
April 19th, 2011 at 11:48 PM
first time doing kraftwerk on decent headphones (meaning, much better than iPod buds)
wish i didn;t have a story to write. i might be otherwise engaged synapse-wise
April 19th, 2011 at 11:50 PM
You know that’s a tough one. Normally he wasn’t like that, true, but that whole situation was one big fuck up, from behind the bench to what he did. I think the damage was done when Bertuzzi jumped him, but the pile up and all didn’t help that’s for sure. I don’t think it helps that Bertuzzi had a reputation for being a little arrogant, or aloof at least, and doesn’t do a fantastic job of ‘showing remorse.’ Can’t see how he isn’t affected by it though.
If it’s me, I think you had to to pretty much throw the guy out of the league for that, just out of principle. May be harsh, but maybe it would have made others sit up and take notice. Now, I really don’t feel anything either way about him, though this lawsuit keeps coming up. Tell you one thing, that cost the Canucks a very promising season which doesn’t sit well with some people. They’re just bitter anyways though.
Kings are looking rather good right now. San Jose might be in trouble.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:51 PM
Exactly. How good he was is irrelevant. Dude sucker punched him from behind
April 19th, 2011 at 11:52 PM
technically he was (moore cheapshotted (?) naslund in an earlier game), but what some forget is that Moore had already been challenged and fought someone (can’t forget who). The “Bertuzzi thing” kind of came out of nowhere after that. The dispute right now is if Bertuzzi felt “ordered” to do that, or at least was following some “code.”
April 19th, 2011 at 11:53 PM
“can’t forget who”
Wow, got to slow down, good think I write for a living! I can’t remember who he fought.

April 19th, 2011 at 11:56 PM
I hope so. When Bert came to the D I was like “eh whatever.” He has changed his game. Motherfucker skates his ass off on the back check like it a left wing lock. I really like the guy. He has scored some big goals. I want him to shoot more. Like, he has totally been shell shocked by that incident. He is still a very good player. I want him to throw his weight around. BTW, I want him to fight Doan off the first face off.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:58 PM
When Bert came to the D I was like “eh whatever.”
we’re getting warmer…how did you feel about him after the moore incident?
April 20th, 2011 at 12:01 AM
I think this too, though he was never one to throw his weight around. Or at least the hope was he would always do more of this type of thing when he was here too. The Naslund-Bertuzzi-Morrison line was something else though, fun to watch.
This LA – SJ series has been the most entertaining so far I’d say.
April 20th, 2011 at 12:01 AM
i love fuzzy and chugging and wahwah and throat-cutting guitars with the best of them, but damn, this electronic bleep bloop german accented silliness is so damn catchy!
April 20th, 2011 at 12:02 AM
Honest answer: I don’t really remember. All I can say is 9 times out of 10 that plays out differently. And it’s just remembered as some random ass retirubtion play.
April 20th, 2011 at 12:03 AM
