Watch Kevin Na Card a 16 on One Disastrous Hole at the Valero Texas Open
Kevin Na’s struggles in the woods at the Valero Texas Open had a Blair Witch-type feel to them. He lost track of how many strokes it took him to get out. “I think I made somewhere between 10 and 15. But I think it’s close to a 15,” he said afterward. His 13th shot got him out of the woods. According to ESPN, Na’s double snowman (actual term for a 16: duodecuple) ended up being the worst score on a par-4 on the PGA tour since 1983. The News-Express claims only John Daly’s 18 on a par-5 at Bay Hill in 1988 was worse.

i feel you pain Kevin.
April 15th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
April 15th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
Been there, done that.
April 15th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
What’s crazy is that he shot -4 on the other 17 holes.
April 15th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
i thought there was a stroke limit per hole?
April 15th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
bear grylls would have drank his own urine trying to get outta that thick shit.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
funny thing is, if he played the hole normally, it still would’ve taken an hour.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
he was bogey-free on the back 9, i believe
April 15th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
get 12 bogeys on one hole, get your next 9 holes bogey free!
April 15th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
Details? That’s a dude on tour that I don’t know much about?
April 15th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
We usually play with 10.
Two OB’s and a 3 putt will get you there quick.
Fucking golf.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Slowest player on tour, and notoriously dickish about it.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
/inside joke?
April 15th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
arrested development…turned pro at 17.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
jay v said it…slowest player on tour.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Unless he had to take his shoes and socks off it wasn’t that disastrous.
/Van de Velde’d
April 15th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Couldn’t he have taken an unplayable lie from the get-go, and brought his ball back on a line to the tee, no nearer the hole, and taken a drop at nearest relief?
April 15th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I see. I thought you were making some reference to the course or something.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I wish they would have showed more of Cabrera on the tee behind him. You could tell he wanted to play through so bad.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
he did take an unplayable after his 1st drive, went back to the tee, hit his 2nd drive in the same spot (and hit a provisional). then he got flustered and tried to get the ball out after his 2nd drive, and after that, there was nothing he could do under the rules to get it out.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
lol.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
and wasn’t Angel Cabrera right behind him, who is one of the faster players on tour? I bet he was wanting to smoke about a pack of heaters watching that shit show go down.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
this was sunday’s round, right? he could have taken anything but a DQ and still got paid.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
I watched a lot of that round. Even when Na wasn’t lost in the woods, Cabrera and Ogilvy were still staring dude down while they waited for every shot.
I don’t understand slow play. At all. Does he do it to play mind tricks or what?
April 15th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
Nope. That was yesterday. Thursday.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
this, combined with how well I was hitting off the tee yesterday, which is a rarity in itself, and finding out my twosome took first place in our flight in the fish & golf tournament last weekend made me feel real good about my golf game yesterday.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
ill…this was thursday’s round.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
he’s a typical tour robot. he can’t pull the trigger until he’s plumb-bobbed 30 times.
i blame jack…he started it.
/pours one out for jpq
April 15th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
the more I watch Cabrera the more I like him. not sure why, I guess cause he seems like he has that don’t give a fuck look, but still plays balls out. he seems like the foreign version of Daly, except minus the whole being a fuck up part.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Speaking of golf, got my first tourney of the year tomorrow. A two-man match play tourney. Took 3rd last year. We’re the favorites this year. I think. 27 holes tomorrow. 18 on Sunday. It might reach 100 on Sunday here. Hot as balls.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
He’s up there on my list of Tour pros I’d want to play with.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
yea, i love cabrera. the 2007 us open at oakmont is my favorite golf tournament ive ever watched, and he’s a large part of that. just CRUSHES it and doesn’t give a shit. takes a look, waggles, swings…no wasted bullshit.
plus, he’s got a great story. was a dirt-poor caddy in argentina and has worked for every last bit of what he’s earned. nothing but respect for the duck.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
He made a brief appearance this a.m. to comment on that hellish tsunami video that TBL made us watch.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
ritty…hope you packed the under armor, best of luck in the tourney tho.
me and realAC are playing today. it’s mid 50′s and sunny…perfect golf weather.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Golf Magazine polled a bunch of PGA Tour players, one of the questions was “Which player do you most wish would choke in a major?” Kevin Na was the runaway winner.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
I love players like that. I hate the Nick Watneys of the tour. “Waaaah, I don’t know what to doooooooooooooo, hoooold meeeeeee”
April 15th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
I’d like it at about 70 but mid 50′s will work. I’m sure it might as well be 90 for you guys up there. Our Sunday round tees off at 1:30 so we’ll be in the thick of the heat. This tourney is more about having a good time though, so I’ll be a few deep in the red, white, and blues by then. All good.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
dude, between the heat and the late start, yall gonna be FUCKED UP.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
lol.
that said, i like watney.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Until we get out of the 30s and 40s here and have some sun, the only golf I’ll be doing is Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12.
I’ve been itching to get out, but between work, low temps and rain/thunderstorms/tornadoes when it does get warmer, I have yet to hit the links.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
With the 27 hole format on Saturday, I’m hoping we have a comfortable lead so that Sunday is dedicated solely to boozin’.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
i forgot today was friday, yesterday’s round makes more sense.
is he playing today or did he just skip town and cut his losses? personally, i would have gotten hammered drunk last night, done some blow to keep me awake all night, and shown up on the 1st tee box today int he same clothes.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
i think that’s called the jeff overton.
booze cruise to victory, lawya.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
I used to feel bad for golfers when these things happened. Then I started playing more, and I love every second of it.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I can’t wait for it to be consistently nice to get a full round of golf in. Problem is I’m superbusy before the wedding (7 weeks) and the weather has been crappy. Did get out to range yesterday. Irons were good, but my drive was terrribe.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Was watching this and the hole before he did this I said “I hate how Kevin Na plays” then he did this and I had a nice laugh.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
that’s crazy shit, have never heard that. I don’t think I can play that fast in a damn cart.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
I am pretty bad at golf, but I decided to start trying to shape the ball with a draw. Yeah, I can’t chip for shit or putt to save my life, but I hit a beautiful draw on a dogleg the other day. I was thrilled.
/most likely doubled the hole
//can’t remember

i played yesterday, and was lining up my 8 iron for a 165 approach. swung, made great contact, and watch my clubhead boomerang into a pond. sonofabitch!
April 15th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
For sure. I also don’t golf enough to expect to get all that much better. Time and money are two large obstacles. I do love playing, though.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I hit the ball like a bitch. I’d love to be able to hit an 8-iron 165. If I tag one it’s probably 150 or so. I suppose taking lessons would be a good idea, but I doubt that’ll ever happen.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
He’s playing…actually, he went out and played the back 9 in -3 after that disaster. Which makes me respect a lot more than I did before.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:50 AM

April 15th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
That happened to me on one of the best 8 irons I ever hit. Pured it, the club head snapped off and went 50 yards, the ball went about 160 and left me with a tap in for birdie. That was the beginning of the end of my Ping Eye 2 blue dots.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
165 is a long way for an 8. I’m guessing dude hits it with a closed club face, lower trajectory, little draw. That makes up the extra distance.
April 15th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Learn the correct posture and grip (from a professional) and I guarantee you will be hitting the ball better…if you have those wrong it is nearly impossible to hit a good shot.

i hit it very high, and swing a little faster than i probably should. plus i cock my hands back at take away and i think that adds some distance.
April 15th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Sounds a little like me, actually. I hate it. I’d rather take 10 yards off of every iron and be 10x more accurate. I throw it up high in the air with a draw and pray the wind doesn’t eat me alive. I’ve tried choking up on clubs but don’t trust it enough yet.
