Could John Calipari Use the NBA Lockout to Form One of the Greatest Collections of Talent in College Basketball History?
Jared Sullinger of Ohio State surprised everyone by passing on the NBA. Then Perry Jones of Baylor did the same. There are rumors Harrison Barnes is passing on the NBA, too. Do they fear the NBA lockout? Perhaps. Clearly, college basketball stands to profit from the NBA lockout, as Sullinger, Jones and Barnes were considered Top 10 picks. But what happens if Kentucky coach John Calipari manages to keep three of his freshman from leaping to the NBA? Are we looking at one of the best collections of college basketball talent … of all-time?
Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones and Enes Kanter are all considered NBA lottery picks. [Ed. Kanter is permanently ineligible. Bummer.] Knight is an excellent student, Kanter’s father has said his son wants to stay in school, and Jones … well, nobody expects him to stay, but humor me for a minute. So maybe they all stick around Lexington for one more year? (And three other holdovers will definitely be back: Doron Lamb, Darius Miller and DeAndre Liggins.)
The Wildcats already have the No. 1-rated recruiting class coming in, with point guard Marquis Teague (brother of Jeff, who plays for the Hawks and starred at Wake Forest), forward Mike Gilchrist and power forward Anthony Davis. The trio are considered to be among the 10 best players in the high school class of 2011. A fourth recruit, Kyle Wiltjer, is considered a Top 50 player.
Amazingly, Knight, Jones, Kanter and Doron Lamb were all considered Top 25 high school players a year ago.
So if Calipari can convince the holdovers to stick around for one more year, the Wildcats could feasibly suit up six Top 25 high school recruits, five of whom could be NBA lottery picks in 2012. That’s not hyperbole, either. Knight, Jones, Teague, Gilchrist and Davis all project as future NBA players. And nobody would be surprised if players like Lamb, Liggins and Wiltjer made the pros, too.
UK has had immense collections of talent before – the 1995-1996 team was stacked, and nine players made the NBA, which is the same number as the 1990-1991 UNC Tar Heels – but next year’s team would be vastly superior. Sure, they’d probably look like an AAU team, and the in-fighting over shots and playing time would be legendary, and not having role players will obviously hurt at some point in March … but LET ME DREAM!
And yes, everyone’s preseason Final Four would have Kentucky and UNC.
Potential Kentucky rotation in 2011-2012:
PG – Brandon Knight
SG – DeAndre Liggins
SF – Terrence Jones
PF – Michael Gilchrist
C – Enes Kanter Anthony Davis
Reserves: Teague, Miller, Lamb, Wiltjer. Kentucky could put on a UNLV/Arkansas full court press and dominate teams by 20 points on a night basis. If need be, they could go small with Knight, Teague and Lamb … or big with a frontline of Gilchrist/Davis. And it is unlikely they’d fall into a 3-point trap, which is what cost them in the NCAA tournament the last two years (WVU & UConn), because Davis, and Gilchrist all have back-to-the-basket ability, something that was a lacking the last two years. Even if Jones bolts for the NBA – I expect him to – you can plug Gilchrist into the PF spot and not miss anything. The real key to making this team special is the return of Knight.

We’re outgunned, and undermanned. But you know sumpin’? We’re gonna win. You know why? Superior attitude. Superior state of mind.
April 15th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
I thought Kanter was ineligible?
April 15th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
If Knight and Co. stay, wouldn’t these guys be inclined to transfer elsewhere for more playing time?
April 15th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Do I need to even point out why this sentence is complete nonsense?
April 15th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Kanter (the Turkish pro) has already been ruled permanently ineligible and his appeal has been denied. Am I missing something on this?
As far as everything else, yeah, UK’s gonna be pretty sick.
April 15th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I’ve already vacated my bracket in anticipation.
April 15th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Someone actually commented today with the words: “/team Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.” I’m still in shock.
April 15th, 2011 at 11:55 AM

I would take any team with Michael Jordan on it in college.
April 15th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
kanter can’t play college basketball, so major error there. Also, Teague is not coming off the bench, his family would have none of that. Nike didn’t give his brother a endorsement deal to come off the bench.
Also, I have my questions on A. Davis. I realize his HS team was awful, but the number 1 player in the country should allow them to win more games especially when he is taller then every player he faced.
The biggest question mark for this team is going to be chemistry, way too many personal agendas. Teague, Davis and Gilchrist all have people in their ear, mostly bad. My guess is this team will end up closer to the wall, bledsoe, cousins team. Dominate the regular season but won’t have enough cohesion to win 6 straight games.
April 15th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
yup, Kanter stuff fixed to reflect he won’t play for UK.
still, top 9 players could all be pros, matching 91 UNC, 96 UK.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
damn, this could be scary.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
They should see if they can convince that homeless kid to play for them and really put together a super team, I’ve heard half the SEC is already gunning for him
April 15th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
So much talent on this team. Davis and Gilcrist are both top 5 picks in next years draft. If Barnes comes back next year and UK keeps Knight I don’t see how it isn’t UK/UNC in the finals. Two coaches who can recruit like crazy but both have severe coaching deficiencies.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Outside of his length/athleticism, Anthony Davis is just flat-out overrated. He’ll have sick plays that will make you think he’s going to be a game-changer on the college level, but most of next year will remind you more of Harrison Barnes than Kevin Durant. His game has A LOT of catching up to do with his ridiculous growth spurt.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Sam Thompson ends up having a better year.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
I dont think so, actually it’s not even a question. The UCLA teams in the 60′s were nasty. ’96 UK comes to mind as does ’92 Duke.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
TSH, I edited my thoughts to discard Syracuse but I still stand behind Buffalo and Rochester.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
NBA preview thread today or what?
April 15th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Does seem like that would be a sick team. Always a crap shoot in the tourney, though. One bad game and it’s over. Pegging any team into the Final Four is silly these days.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
what’s a less corny way to say “amen brother?”
April 15th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
If Knight and Jones both come back, at least one, if not two, of UK’s recruits won’t show up on campus.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I look at this and I still think the Izzo, Coach K, Calhoun recruiting model works much better. Your recruit top college talent, but you get guys that aren’t necessarily looking at immediately jumping to the next level.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
“this” has been deemed an appropriate alternative.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
What year was it that Duke lost to UConn in the finals? 99? That team was crazy loaded.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Brand, Maggette, Avery, Langdon…something like 36-1 heading into the championship game, just stupid
April 15th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
tweet that to Chad Ford. curious about his response. Ford’s ready to make babies with Davis.
THAT would be awesome.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
around 1 pm.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
I do think Cal is an elite coach (everyone else shits on him and acts like he doesn’t know hoops, even though they forget that his dribble drive clinics are some of the most well-attended in the country), but with all that said, he was actually luckily Kantner never played a game. It forced him to go with Harrellson, who was probably better suited to help them in the tourney. Even Liggins strikes me as a guy he only played out of necessity.
The way he recruits, those Harrellson’s never have a chance to bloom or see the floor.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
God I hate the tournament.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Not really.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Sounds like wishful thinking to me.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
They made it to the championship game and lost to another 1-seed, the fuck else you want? A best-of-7?
April 15th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Natrone Means killed Duke that game.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Anyone reading They PLay Their Hearts out by George Dohrmann? Book is money.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Same with this.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Why not? There’s a reason the NBA gets it right pretty much every year.
Oh and baseball used to do best of 9′s!
April 15th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
It’s not like UConn was completely devoid of talent.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
They have to go to class sometime
34-2 they finished, how DARE they win that game
April 15th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Dr. Tom, I wonder if Bilas said there were no great teams that year.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
overrated Big East!
April 15th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
I’d hate for NCAA to go to best-of-7. If that happened, the better team would win 95% of the time. Less opportunity to call coaches and players a big bag of frauds, then.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
BBOF
April 15th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Ohio St. was a seriously flawed team despite what you and others might think.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Psh, can’t have an Internet without buzzwords, hoss.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Played arguably their worst game of the year against a team with a bunch of NBA players and lost by 2.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Seriously? They lost 3 games all year, beat everyone on their schedule until UK. Efficiency ratings on both ends put them right up along other “great” teams in the past 15 years. If you thought they were “seriously” flawed, then you have a ridiculously high bar.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
I’m not saying they were bad or even mediocre, but they weren’t exactly dominant coming out of a fairly weak Big Ten. They lacked athleticism, depth, a wing that could create his own shot, interior defense, and they were a bit too reliant on the 3 (though they shot it well).
Minor flaws by themselves, but they were exploitable.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Not really. Told specifically (by the same person who told me that T-Jones wasn’t going to Washington 30 minutes after he committed) that there is one specific recruit who absolutely will not enroll if one specific UK player returns. I 100% believe this.
As for there being 2…yep, that’s wishful thinking.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
They went 19-2 against the Big 10 with ten double digit victories. How are you defining dominant?
April 15th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Dr. Tom, the Big Ten was not “fairly weak,” it was by most accounts the 2nd best conference this year. They beat up Florida on the road, went to FSU and pulled away… and they also put up some historic shooting nights (literally, historic, both in the tournament and in the regular season).
Buford is an NBA wing who can ABSOLUTELY create his own shot.
As far as exploitable, yes, every team is exploitable in some way. The Lakers have won two straight titles and have obvious weaknesses. There’s no such thing as a perfect college hoops team that matches up with all other 350 teams. Basketball doesn’t work that way. UCONN had all sorts of weaknesses (why they lost 9 Big East games).
April 15th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Also Dr. Tom, of their 37 games, OSU had 34 games where they have double digit leads in the second half. That’s scary good.
April 15th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I dont understand why ’91 UNC team keeps getting mentioned, that team had ridiculous depth but none of those guys were anything more than a role player in the NBA, and a bunch of them (Phelps, Wenstrom, Salvadori) got nothing more than a cup of coffee. The Stackhouse-Wallace and Carter-Jamison teams were much better from an NBA talent standpoint, to say nothing of the Jordan-Worthy-Perkins teams.
April 15th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
April 15th, 2011 at 1:59 PM
More annoying: entitled OSU fans who never win anything or entitled Red Sox fans who win once in a while?
April 15th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
Not really. Told specifically (by the same person who told me that T-Jones wasn’t going to Washington 30 minutes after he committed) that there is one specific recruit who absolutely will not enroll if one specific UK player returns. I 100% believe this.
Jay V,
Teague if Knight returns? Teague has to have the ball. That would be a fight waiting to happen.
April 17th, 2011 at 4:12 AM
if Knight comes back he moves to the 2 spot. Teague is a superior PG and everyone knows it. It would be nice to have Jones back, but i don’t really care. If he puts up performances like he did during confernece play, he’s dead weight especially with the likes of Gilchrist, Wiltjer, and Liggins, all capable of play SF/PF like Jones, just way better. Too deep, our recruits are all saying we win it all. They’re demeanor is unlike any other recruits. I don’t seeing us winning 40 games, but its really hard to see us losing. Hands down the best backcourt and one of the top front courts.Lose to North Carolina, maybe, because they will be stacked too. All our big games are at Rupp. Our bench could run the table in the SEC. Best team in the country if Knight stays, lock for best team EVER in college if Jones and Knight come back. Lamb, Miller, Wiltjer, Jones/Liggins off the bench, plus Hood, Vargas, Polson and Poole. Just think about it, you gotta be kidding me. Here’s to hoping for the two year rule as well.
Starters Bench
PG: M. Teague Doron Lamb Stacey Poole Jared Polson
SG: B. Knight Doron Lamb D. Miller Jon Hood
SF: M. Gilchrist D. Liggins D. Miller Jon Hood
PF: T. Jones Kyle Wiltjer D. Liggins D. Miller
C: A. Davis Kyle Wiltjer Eloy Vargas
