GLAAD and HRC Seek Apology From Kobe Bryant For Homophobic Slur, Kobe Apologizes
As you saw in the Roundup this morning, Kobe Bryant was caught on camera using a homophobic slur on the bench last night after receiving a technical foul. Both the Human Rights Campaign and Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation have released statements concerning their displeasure with Kobe.
Here’s the statement from the HRC:
“What a disgrace for Kobe Bryant to use such horribly offensive and distasteful language, especially when millions of people are watching. Hopefully Mr. Bryant will recognize that as a person with such fame and influence, the use of such language not only offends millions of LGBT people around the world, but also perpetuates a culture of discrimination and hate that all of us, most notably Mr. Bryant, should be working to eradicate. Bryant and the Lakers have a responsibility to speak up on this issue immediately. America is watching.”
Kobe released a statement this afternoon.
“What I said last night should not be taken literally,” he said. “My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”
Uh-oh. He forgot to say he shouldn’t have ever used that word. I don’t think this is over… and before I could publish, there’s another HRC statement in my inbox:
HRC called on the Lakers organization to weigh in on the slur, given both the prominence of Bryant and the influence he wields on and off the court.
“For better or worse, Kobe Bryant has created a teachable moment for the millions of fans – many of them young – who saw that outburst on the floor,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “And the right thing to do now is to apologize and take responsibility for suggesting that the worst thing you can do to someone is to scream out a gay slur. This kind of homophobic outburst has dangerous consequences, even more so when it comes from a celebrity in the national spotlight.”
Your move Kobe.

Never understood why people demanded apologies. I DEMAND YOU LIE TO ME!
April 13th, 2011 at 5:03 PM
He made his move.
That’s all he needs to say. Let’s not get ridiculous.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:05 PM
Teachable moment.
Vomit.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:05 PM
Elton John and Spencer think nothing of this.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:06 PM
Will the winner of the PETA/GLAAD mud wrestling match have to issue an apology?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:06 PM
I don’t understand this at all.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:08 PM
Man, I’m so glad Plaschke isn’t on ATH today. I can’t afford another TV set.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:08 PM
Quit being so faggy ya faggots.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:08 PM
Kobe: What a fag.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:08 PM
Where is Spencer? We’re all just here waiting for him to show up, right?

Publicity.
When was the last time GLAAD and HRC was mentioned on this site?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:11 PM
Hey GLAAD and HRC, go work on some real issues, will ya. Wow, PC has run amok.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:11 PM
I asked you to lay some track, not dance around like a bunch of Kansas City faggots!
April 13th, 2011 at 5:11 PM

I think I’ll let Admiral Ackbar weigh in on this.

Quit being so faggy ya faggots.
Nicely done.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
Where is Spencer? We’re all just here waiting for him to show up, right?
Why, is Spencer gay and easily offended?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:13 PM
Kobe’s statement is sufficient.

What in the wide world sports is goin’ on here!?!?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:15 PM
I always wonder if the people that the groups represent that demand the apology actually ever care when the apologies are issued.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:15 PM
Well he is from Ohio. But the only other gay commenter I remember was the UT fan
April 13th, 2011 at 5:16 PM
God forbid Kobe should say something in the heat of the moment, right? Nah, don’t apologize. Shit’s hallow and pointless. These organizations just want publicity.
What exactly are the dangerous consequences? People think he’s an idiot? I doubt he’s homophobic, so that’s not it. I’m surprised they didn’t contribute Kobe’s slip with the fucking Anti-Bullying campaign.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:16 PM
If I saw 2 guys sucking each other’s dicks….I don’t know why I’m watching it….
If one one them took the dick out of his mouth and said something faggy like.. you know people from Phoenix are known are Phoenicians…
I would call someone a faggot because.. he’s being a faggot…nnnay…shut up faggot!
April 13th, 2011 at 5:17 PM
I always wonder if the people that the groups represent that demand the apology actually ever care when the apologies are issued.
People, gay or not, who do not watch basketball or frequent sports blogs, probably have no clue this occurred. NBA players are heard yelling out “Oh Shit!” or “Ahh fuck!” at least once during just about every game. Are we going to make them apologize for those things too?
It would be pretty faggy if we did.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:18 PM
“Oh Shit!” or “Ahh fuck!” at least once during just about every game
It always seems like those happen during missed putbacks
April 13th, 2011 at 5:19 PM
Same here. Most of them seem to demand an apology only to get their name in the paper, but a lot of them (in all honesty probably the HRC guy too) are just asked by reporters and others in the media to make a statement, since apparently there needs to be a response to Kobe yelling at a ref. Did they even talk to the ref yet or rush to get the head of GLAADs opinion?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:23 PM
Was it stupid to say? Yup. Is GLAAD right to call him on it? Yup. He apologized, so I think, if we’re still upset, we can punch a highly stylized folding chair, throw a towel, and move on.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:26 PM
let me get him for you.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:26 PM
The ref rode his Harley to the gym last night.
If he was actually a homosexual, Kobe would have called him a gay fag.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:28 PM
“Oh Shit!” or “Ahh fuck!” at least once during just about every game
My favorite “AND ONE!!!!!!!” after a foul.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:29 PM
Mistrial in Bonds case on 3 of 4 counts. Verdict on 4th count to be read very shortly.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:29 PM
let me get him for you.
Is it weird that I enjoyed hearing Rachael Harris say “That’s a good idea Dr. Faggot?”
April 13th, 2011 at 5:31 PM
guessing mistrial on lying, verdict on obstruction.
probably not guilty.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:34 PM
My thoughts precisely.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:35 PM
it would be weird though, so say he’s guilty of obstruction by lying, then say there’s a mistrial on three counts of lying?
who knows.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:36 PM
GUILTY on obstruction.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:36 PM
oops, i was wrong. guilty on obstruction.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:37 PM
stark…im trying to cut down on the “fag” usage…began feeling bad about it. trying to only say it during road rage.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:37 PM
oops, i was wrong. guilty on obstruction.
So what does that mean in terms of sentencing? I haven’t been following this too closely.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:38 PM
GUILTY on obstruction.
Death Penalty?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:38 PM
stark…im trying to cut down on the “fag” usage…began feeling bad about it. trying to only say it during road rage.
I’ve been using ‘dickhole’ a lot in road rage situations lately. It works well.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:39 PM
Obstruction is the lesser charge, so I don’t think much will happen. The meat of the complaint was lying to the feds, obstruction isn’t nearly as bad.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:39 PM
GUILTY on obstruction.
Death Penalty?
Yes and the means of execution will be like Nicky Santoro in Casino.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:40 PM

The “wanking motion” while looking at the victim of the roadrage is a great move. Gets people fired up.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:41 PM
Does he have to watch Bobby get it first?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:42 PM
I suspect they will seek a substantial civil penalty. Which would be appropriate, considering the huge waste of taxpayers’ dollars this trial consumed.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:42 PM
that scene always makes me uncomfortable.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:44 PM
And when talking about the faggy Bengals?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:45 PM
Yea it is wierd because Nicky was the biggest piece of shit and then you actually feel kinda sorry for him at the end.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:45 PM
Next hearing is set for May 20, I assume that’s when sentencing will be
April 13th, 2011 at 5:46 PM
Pesci is the king of unceremonious deaths. Or ceremonious, depending on your point of view.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:46 PM
Yea it is wierd because Nicky was the biggest piece of shit and then you actually feel kinda sorry for him at the end.
Especially since it’s Frankie that does most of the beating.
I think that was the character’s name…it was the same actor who played Billy Batts in Goodfellas. Which is ironic because Joe Pesci killed his character in Goodfellas and then he got to kill Pesci’s character in Casino.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:48 PM
Here’s the Twitter of that Mark whatever his name was, he’s in the courtroom…

And Pesci beat the shit out of him in Raging Bull also.
April 13th, 2011 at 5:53 PM

brawny tom…the faggy bengals will ALWAYS be the faggy bengals. i mean, just look at the uniforms. what else could they be?
April 13th, 2011 at 5:56 PM
that’s scorsese’s bro yall’s talking about.
Is it really? I guess that explains why Scorsese movies are his only huge roles.
April 13th, 2011 at 10:06 PM
that’s scorsese’s bro yall’s talking about.
Um, no it’s not. Frank Vincent. He’s been in a ton of mob movies, also was in the Sopranos.
