Speaking of the south today is the 150th anniversary of the start of the civil war. You would think with all that southern speeeeeed the south would have figured out a way to beat the north.
April 12th, 2011 at 8:33 AM
You’re forgetting that all of the southern speeeeed at the time was valuable property, instead of just overly exploited pawns for the people getting rich off of college football.

This. I’ve never seen people more proud of something they lost. It would be like if I watched superbowl 45 highlights over and over again and wouldn’t stop talking about it while a Packers fan would barely acknowledge it.

Fantastic insight into the higher education “bubble”. Not sure why the author started off that piece with “this will piss off a lot of you”. If starting my own business was an economically viable option, I would have done it in a heartbeat. College seemed cheaper.
April 12th, 2011 at 8:57 AM
Meh…as soon as it leaked that Roy told Barnes he was in the 5 to 11 range, I knew it was coming. UNC won’t win it all next year though, that’ll I’ll guarantee.
April 12th, 2011 at 8:58 AM
So Edge retired last night? Surprising. One of the most underappreciated careers in wrestling history. His match with Foley at WM22 was insane and still holds up today.

Fantastic insight into the higher education “bubble”.
I see this on a daily basis. Kids who have no desire to be in school but go because their parents want them to or simply because they feel like they are supposed to go. End up sleep-walking through four-five years, do enough to just get by but don’t gain any skills and end up with a large mountain of debt and no real options. Great, great system.
April 12th, 2011 at 9:00 AM

Real retired or storyline retired? Why didn’t he retire at WM if it was real?

Indeed. Also, the guy railing against the perception of higher education in the article went to Stanford and Stanford Law School. I’m sure that didn’t open any doors for him… I don’t know, I guess hindsight is 20-20.

Why haven’t newspapers hooked up with iTunes like the music industry did? I know absolutely nothing about the economics of it; but one of the main reasons that I wouldn’t pay for newspaper content is because it’s such a hassle to open up an account/register a credit card when I can just use another site for free. If all newspapers only allowed their content to be accessed through an iTunes-like system, where you would pay $.50 or $1.00 to get that days newspaper, wouldn’t that make sense?

Definitely agree with the arguments presented in the article by Thiel. Though its still a necessity, a lot of higher education is misleading (i.e – law school in the States) and cripples a lot of lives in debt for the sake of making a profit off them.

It has been awesome. It really brings it home that the Stone Cold persona was taken out of his own pysche. He even mentions being brought into the WWF by Vince to be “The Ringmaster” and him saying “It sucked, I knew it but it was a foot in the door.” His speech to the dude he threw off last night was awesome. If you DVR it and cut through the commercials and some of the filler BS, it’s 30 mins of solid TV.

I don’t think you’d leave your kids stranded like that coming out of college, depending on the job market. For example, the current job market is so bad that friends/family members of mine who have been recent graduates in concrete programs (i.e – Finance, Life Sciences, etc) have had to wait 6-12 months before receiving a job in their field. In that time, they had to live with their parents. They worked, but trying to manage rent and everything else in that time would have been disastrous and I’m glad their parents were there for them. Trust me, your kids would appreciate you being there. If they’re mooching off you and not working hard then sure, kick them out.

I don’t think you’d leave your kids stranded like that coming out of college, depending on the job market.
Yeah man… are you going to force your kids to go homeless/completely wreck their credit because they couldn’t find a job after graduating with massive debt? It’s one thing if they’re sitting on their asses, but if they’re actively working part-time and looking for a full time job, I’d have a hard time telling my kids to take a hike after they graduated.

Professional Wrestling is a very unsafe business. I know its fake, but wrestlers take a lot of abuse. Bret Hart’s biography had stories where wrestlers would get injured, and not wanting to be bumped down and therefore lose money, they’d take steroids to get better faster or benefit them from thier injury and come back many weeks earlier than they should. He also mentioned wrestlers drinking themselves to sleep, coke being snorted, living in hotel rooms all the time, and blading.
I’m not sure how much of all this still goes around, but considering that Benoit died from steroids and Gurrero died from something similar (IIRC), they really need to calm their traveling schedule down and allow the athletes to recuperate so they don’t kill themselves by 50.

The Union may have been incompetent to start, but the AD and Univ. President sure made a few good coaching hires by bringing in Grant and Sherman.
And as to the guy who said Les Miles would’ve charged “up” Little Round Top. Nah, if anything, he’d have been the guy to go down the hill (no ammo, soldier morale beginning to dwindle, running out of options). I know, I know, he’s the LSU coach. But remember: he was a MEEEEEEEEEEEEE-chigan man first.
And is there a place I can see some of these Tough Enough highlights? I used to love that show back on MTV. Why Vince yanked it off is beyond me. Where is Maven these days?

Lots of Ben Franklin and John Adams statues and monuments in London and Manchester?
Benjamin Franklin House.
Well done (though to be expected from a loyal subject of the crown).
Seriously though, Franklin made numerous contributions to society and science; the only thing Stonewall Jackson did of note was rebel against his country (and do it well).
April 12th, 2011 at 9:37 AM

And let me make this clear…I’m not attempting to make any arguments about the Civil War other than that it is certainly acceptable for their to be monuments to fallen veterans. Flying the flag…not so much.
April 12th, 2011 at 9:38 AM
there is a 2 hour show on Sherman’s March that they play on either Natgeo or history channel that is real good. I have a 3 hour Civil War documentary from PBS about a week ago on my DVR that may get watched tonight.

I don’t find it acceptable at all. But I’m not going to lose any sleep over it.
April 12th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Benoit did not “die from steroids”, the autopsy showed his brain was beaten up and concussed so badly it gave him dementia, and therefore essentially the brain of an 80+ year old man.
His short term memory was completely shot (other wrestlers said they couldn’t plan their matches beforehand because he wouldn’t remember anything) and he would cry or get angry at the drop of a hat, over nothing. Brain trauma is what messed him up and led to the tragedy.
Eddie died of acute heart failure brought about by a number of different things. Other than than that you’re right about the lifestyle those guys lead.

You forgot his fascination with lemon drops.
I guess, but for my money, Lee is a much more interesting figure from a historical perspective. To my minds, Jackson is purely a soldier (though certainly a gifted one) with rather strict religious beliefs, no more no less.

I read the Adams book too and his influence has been undersold in the past.
That said, Adams was not the most politic of lawyers and Franklin could basically sell a ketchup freezepop to a French woman with white gloves. Don’t underestimate Franklin’s influence, even if he didn’t have pen to paper like John Adams did.

Rommel was pro-Germany anti-Hitler though, especially in the end.
Rommel got promoted so quickly because he was friends with Hitler and while he certainly turned against Hitler towards the end (though his participation in the July 20th plot is debatable) this was because he saw Germany losing the war, not because he was horrified at the atrocities committed by the Reich.
/lucky for his reputation he fought in Africa and the West and not in the Soviet Union
April 12th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
I read the book about five months ago, but from what I remember, Adams after helping with the Decleration, he went with his son over to France in 1778. Problem was he didn’t know French at the time.
