John Steigerwald Deserved It

John Steigerwald is the nutty Pennsylvanian columnist who wrote that if Bryan Stow didn’t want to be beaten into a medically induced coma and had part of his skull removed, maybe he shouldn’t have dressed like a fan of the visiting team. Well, the internet is afire over his idiocy and he bares a striking resemblance to an aging Ron Burgundy.
Its safe to say no one outside the Pittsburgh area had heard of Steigerwald until today, but now he will live on in internet infamy. And just look at this delightfully nutty tale about his own trip to the ball park on opening day.
It was the kind of day that I used to hope we would get for an opener and all the sights and sounds reminded me of why baseball used to be my favorite sport.
There wasn’t a day in sports that I looked forward to more than the Pirates home opener. I skipped school and went to my first one in 1960.
Everything looked the same but I knew that it was all superficial and I wondered how many of the people I saw were kidding themselves.
I saw a lot of guys my age and I wondered if they were there out of habit or if they were there pretending that these were the Pirates that they grew up with.
The longer I was there the more annoyed I became.
I left at noon and went home.
If you had told me 20 years ago that I would walk away from a home opener on a 60 degree, cloudless less day, I would have told called you crazy.
The next Home Opner I go to will the one that is played in the first season of the MLB salary cap.
Seriously, did anyone see that coming? I’m starting to think maybe he’s lost touch a bit. He goes from happy childhood memories to wondering if people still enjoy baseball to leaving the park to saying he wouldn’t be back to the park until there’s a salary cap. I don’t believe TSH would take literary license here to make this jackass look more stupid. This guy is already as low as one can go.

And now the rest of you fucks are stuck knowing him too. His local claim to fame before this was being the biggest Kordell Stewart supporter on this planet. Also this.

Steigerwald is one of the many old writers in Pittsburgh that believes baseball is the greatest sport ever, and opening day is still magical in western PA. I might start reading their paper if they hired someone under 55.
April 12th, 2011 at 7:44 PM
He’s not a columnist. He’s a douchebag with keyboard. Huge difference.

Yeah Dulac is awesome. Madden is old but I do like his articles in the Beaver county times. Cook, Smizik, Collier, and the rest not so much.

This is obviously jus another TBL post looking for people who agree with his idea of an MLB salary cap…

I saw Mark Madden last month, and I give that guy maybe 2 more years. He doesn’t even have a gut anymore. It’s just one big giant ball with a head.

The best part is he has his own food item named after him at Pittsburgh Steak Company. It’s a salad. Irony.

Named after city’s #1 talk show host. It’s our large salad with cheddar cheese, breaded chicken tenders that we dip in buffalo sauce topped with bacon bits and fries. Watch out though if you don’t eat it all, you’ll get insulted then hung up on!

Are salads like this not common in other parts of the country? You can get Steak salads and BBQ Chicken salads like or similar to this in most bars/restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. And yes its a heart attack on a plate. And yes it tastes great.
April 12th, 2011 at 8:28 PM
Oh no you can find heart attack salads everywhere, from Chili’s to Applebee’s to Chevy’s to Outback, just not that specific one with fries on it too, never seen fries on a salad.
April 12th, 2011 at 8:30 PM

They are here in KC. I think somewhere I once saw a prime rib salad. The lettuce is optional.

Oh fries are on all the salads in Pittsburgh. Yum. Although the most unhealthy thing I’ve ever had is about a block from this restaurant. This treat right here.

Probably. I had never even heard of that Washington, PA paper he writes for so I doubt they mind the publicity. He has been off any major news station or paper for a few years now.

It’s the perfect combination of a Mr. Perfect WWF promo and Ron Burgundy.

Have you walked from downtown SF to China town? My city has steep hills when people come from out of town, I cruise up the hills and they would want to stop and rest – for point of reference.
My kid wanted to go to church on ash Wednesday when we were in SF a couple of years ago. She found a church in China town. Those hills were as close to 90 degree as I’ve ever seen. I was so hoping to miss the light at the top of each hill. Actually there never was a top of a hill, it was one continuous hill with some lights on it.
April 12th, 2011 at 9:47 PM
Yup that’s definitely Chinatown for ya, hills every-fucking-where. The worst is trying to drive a manual car on those damn hills, it’s ridiculous. Chinatown does have good places to buy “real” fireworks though.

Boston just made Kyle Farnsworth look like Mariano Rivera. Jacoby Ellsbury passes up two good pitches and then swings at a curveball outside. Big Papi crushes a ball to right and somehow it just dies in right field. I don’t know how to feel about this Red Sox team right now. It’s only 11 games but it’s frustrating. Lester wasn’t terrible tonight but the Sox couldn’t really break through versus Price. Boston gets a lot of people on base and rarely gets them to score. oh and JD Drew still SUCKS.

April 12th, 2011 at 10:29 PM
I wish we could come to an agreement to have either an MOP or MVP in sports. That way, Hollinger and Lebatard can give LeBron the MOP for his stats while someone else can get the MVP. Most valuable has never truly meant the best player but that’s how it is given to us by the media.
April 12th, 2011 at 10:30 PM
Born in SF and raised in the Bay Area. I currently live about 20 minutes south of SF.
April 12th, 2011 at 10:32 PM
Couldn’t agree more, traderjack. LeBron did have the most impressive statistical year in regards to offense, but that is not the same as being most “valuable.” There should definitely be an Offensive Player of the Year or something though for guys like him.

There are 84 comments and rarely a word on what Steigerwald said…
Its not a reach to think that nothing would have happened to Mr Stow if he was wearing a black golf shirt..That is the point that Steigerwald is making. Its sad that in 2011 in this country that one must think this way to avoid a possible conflict but that is America 2011 and I would never be caught dead in my team’s colors in an away stadium…..
April 13th, 2011 at 6:44 PM
Steigerwald has always been a smug, snarky, sarcastic little troll on Pittsburgh television and newspapers. Doesn’t surprise me when he puts his foot in it. Not the first time he has made ignorant statements and doubt it will be the last. Can’t stand him, never could. Let’s put a Steelers jersey on him, duct tape a “Ravens suck” sign to his chest and drop him in downtown Baltimore on a Saturday night.
