Debbie Yow vs. Gary Williams
Debbie Yow vs. Gary Williams: The new NC State AD used to work at Maryland, where she famously clashed with basketball coach Gary Williams. I heard late in the NC State search that Yow was the reason it was taking so long. She couldn’t steal an established name from another school, or nab an up-and-comer, so she settled for an old friend – buddies for 30 years – Mark Gottfried, who just missed out on the Utah opening, and had been working for ESPN. Then, she took a shot at Williams: “I have a reputation of not getting along with Gary Williams, who has tried to sabotage the search. Come on. We all know that, OK? So, whatever. It’s not a reputation. It’s Gary Williams out there doing his thing. Whatever.” Have fun, Gottfried.

Gottfried was about as good a coach as they were going to get or could have expected.

when the bad times hit in Raleigh … wonder if Gottfried’s wife will rush to his defense again

I apologize for the length of this diatribe:
For the NC State fans out there I hope that Gottfried works out for your program. NC State having a strong program is good for the ACC and for college b-ball fans. However, before this coaching search started MD fans (myself included) predicted that NC State would have problems hiring a coach because of an AD who very publicly feuded, meddled with, and attempted to fire her basketball coach who had been very successful. She also signed the football coach and his proposed successor to terrible contracts which she embarrassingly could not get out of.
Yesterdays disaster of a press conference which was preceded by a disaster of a coaching search makes me feel vindicated when it comes to my opinion of the ability of Debbie Yow to do a good job as AD. With her new coach standing next to her she accused an old coach of sabotaging her coaching search. So first she made the press conference about herself and her feud with Gary Williams when it should have been about the hope that comes with the introduction of a new basketball coach. Second she tried to pass the buck and say that the coaching search would have been more successful without GW sabotaging it, which infers that they could have had a better coaching candidate. (I am sure that Gottfried felt like a million bucks while all of this was happening.) I cannot imagine a worse handling of the situation. Any savvy professional who has to deal with the media would have taken the high road and not commented on the situation or said they were there to talk about Gottfried and the future. On top of this Debbie also said that she was considering a lawsuit and that a national media member was writing a story about the whole situation. A lawsuit would be a train wreck for so many different reasons but an example would be depositions taken of every candidate who interviewed for the job. Can you imagine how this would effect any future coaching search. I find it very illuminating that Yow has been spending time worried about a potential article and possibly contributing to it when she should have instead been focused on finding a coach and negotiating a contract for the new coach. None of what transpired yesterday surprises me as someone who witnessed her regime at UMD. Three weeks ago NC State fans were positive that this coaching search would be done quietly and successfully. NC State fans welcome to the Debbie Yow show.

@ATL- Sorry man. I was on the phone while I posted it. Meant to be three paragraphs.
Where is @RnRNCSU?

Your AD says “whatever” twice in one statement. That sums it up about right.

surprised she didn’t use “pwned”
April 6th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
I did too. Different strokes and all…
April 6th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
After 2 coaching searches that made me want to reach for the bottle, at this point I’m beyond blaming the AD’s and just saying screw it,I’ll get ready to do it all over again in 5 years
And also Debbie is nothing is not brash and honest, as I’ve said previously, NC State fans have been happy with her so far, she been a nice change of pace from what Lee Fowler was

Gregg Doyel is supposed to be writing this hit piece on Gary Williams for Debbie Yow.

I think she looks damn good sometimes, this was not one of them
April 6th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
You would say that NC State fans are still happy with her after this coaching search? And after the highlight of a press conference to introduce a new coach was her publicing continuing a feud with her ex-coach instead of getting the fans excited about the new one. Really.

Yow doesn’t have the friends (hatchet men) in the local media that Williams has (Feinstein)so there’s that. But if you look at what the Maryland Athletic program was before she arrived and after she left, it can’t be considered anything other than a successful run.
April 6th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Take what you just said and apply it to GW. He came when the mens bball was a few years removed from the death of Len Bias and on probation for violations from the Bob Wade era. Williams turned the team around and generated enough revenue, thru season tickets being sold out and alumni contributions, to pay for a new basketball stadium and fund a lot of the non-revenue sports. And Debbie tried to run him out of town when he was at his weakest. I don’t think by any means that she was a terrible failure but she was not a success.
April 6th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
It would be different if we hadn’t gone through all this BS before. At least this time it was private and low key enough that we got all the rejections out over a 2-3 day period instead of of 3 Weeks all out in the open.Had slightly higher exceptions going in but after how it all started to unravel but they could of done a lot worse then Gottfried
As for the Gay Williams call out, it was nothing new to anyone that followed the search at all, most were surprised she called him out in public but there is no reason no matter how much he disliked Yow that Williams should of been trying to exert any influence on this search
April 6th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
What she did with all the programs at Maryland has to be commend.Doesn’t matter how much money your school has if it isn’t used and executed out properly.I mean her track record over the years there speaks for itself. Yes, her downfall there was trying to exert some influence on the one program there that didn’t have her touch on it at all and I don’t blame Maryland fans for choosing Gary Williams over her but to say she wasn’t a success there is just funny
April 6th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
The turnaround of the program began with Walt Williams deciding to stay instead of transferring, and I hope you aren’t giving Williams sole credit for season ticket sales and generating revenue.
April 6th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Yow should have had good PR agents posing as sports reporters like Williams had with the guy who wrote the Rudy Gay piece as a way to explain away Williams’ mediocre job at recruiting.
April 6th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
It is Debbies claim that GW exerted influence on the search. He has publicly said he did not. So it is a he said/she said kind of thing. I would lose some respect for him if he was actively contacting coaching candidates. I am a big GW fan but he does not exert the type of influence to effect a coaching search. With that much money at stake I don’t think almost anyone does.
ReaderM- I respect that you have stayed around thru this whole thing and not avoided commenting as things have gone crazy in the search. Really do hope that Gottfried is a good coach.
April 6th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Walt Williams will always be loved for staying at MD. But they were still a bad team when he was there. It took years of hard work to turn the team around. They really started to turn things around when Joe Smith came.
Gary Williams did not sell all of the tickets and did not generate all of the revenue but if you do not think that the success of the basketball program did not generate the majority of the revenue for the past 15 years than I guess we can just agree to disagree. I will tell you that every year alumni had to donate more and more money to secure season basketball tickets and many alumni had to buy season football tickets in a package with the basketball tickets.
If you don’t like GW that is your choice. Debbie botched the coaching search on her own. Myself and other people who followed her at MD have been saying for weeks she would botch it.

Barnes, Miller, Barnes at RDU, the silly Donovan rumor, Pastner, Shaka… Semantics over who was “offered” and “talked to”…her letter she sent out the day before announcing Gottfried.
This wasnt a “low key” search.

Seriously, just go read PackPride. Yow’s paranoia is a perfect fit for the NC State fanbase. The only thing holding them back from being a national power is the media, Coach K, the referees, Roy Williams, the NC Board of Governors, Gary Williams, John Swofford, Herb Sendek, the ACC, and the curse of Jim Valvano.
Yow realizes that if she points to the big bad Boogeyman as the reason she couldn’t lure a coach to Raleigh then the NC State fanbase will eat it up with a spoon.
April 6th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
I don’t dislike Williams, I just don’t like the attempted diminishing of Yow’s record at Maryland. And based on the hatchet jobs locally in the media friends on Yow, and John Gilchrist during times they were in various degrees of conflict with Williams, I’m willing to bet on Yow’s side of the argument.
April 6th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
I am told that Gregg Marshall received multiple phone calls from multiple other coaches on Sunday & Monday advising him against taking the NC State job.
April 6th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
@Benjamin- I think I probably got way off topic but I have been very consistent in saying that Yow was going to have a big problem finding a coach because she had a record of not getting along with her football and basketball coaches. I attached below what I said three weeks ago. I do think that many NC State fans are kidding themselves if they think this search went well and that Debbie did not hijack the press conference yesterday. I find it interesting that RnR_NCSU has been asking TBL questions on twitter but will not come back to the site and make the badk up the claims he made three weeks ago. MD fans who became so frustrated with Debbie knew how this search was going to turn out. This was not a Gary Williams-Debbie Yow thing as much as Debbie and NCST want to make it that. This was a very bad job by an AD who has burned a lot of bridges.

Every damn word of this right here. Her handling of the football HC position was a case study in staff/contract mismanagement, and she never felt the urge to support GW in the media, which might have helped local b-ball recruiting efforts. I’m glad NCSU are getting behind DY in what she’s trying to do in Raleigh, but it’s sad that their previous AD set the bar so low that DY looks competent. Good luck Pack Backers, but I suspect you’ll be singing a different tune in a year or two when DY’s colossal ego and much-deserved inferiority complex again collide to the detriment of your athletic programs.
Also, some great quotes from Feinstein today about how DY tried turn the BB&T Classic into an opportunity to put an extra million in the UM athletics budget. Feinstein had to remind her that the Classic’s ultimate goal is to raise $$$ for Children’s Hospital, and NOT to pay off her questionable contracts to friends/vultures waiting on already-spoken-for coaching slots.

Yow’s support or lack thereof has nothing to do with Williams’ ability to recruit, unless you want to believe that Williams could have gotten Ty Lawson, Kevin Durant, Rudy Gay, Carmelo Anthony or Michael Beasley to commit to Maryland only if Yow told everyone what a great coach Williams is. But then again, I was told that Yow has nothing to do with the positives of the program, so your assertion really doesn’t jibe with that. The big thing hitting the news right now is the academic performance or lack of performance by the football team. Yet Yow was criticized for trying to fire Friedgen and was accused of interfering. Also, the graduation rate of the Mens National Championship BBall squad may have had something to do with Yow supposedly keeping an eye (interfering) on who Williams recruited.
April 6th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
Despite being a Duke fan, I’ve always liked and respected GW and most of the UMD teams (the POS twerp fans at Comcast are another story). Everything I’ve heard about Williams is that he’s a pretty introverted guy, and isn’t the type to actively call prospective coaches to deep six a coaching search for a conference rival. Yow, however, is showing that she is every bit as petty as she insists Williams, and she wants to employ that little faggazoid Gregg Doyel to do a smear on GW? Fuck her and fuck him. For this issue, I’m defintely on UMD’s side.
April 6th, 2011 at 5:52 PM
@Ben- Even thought you say you don’t you really seem to dislike GW. But GW is not the issue of the day as much as you and others wish he would be. It is that DY had a train wreck of a press conference where she publicly attacked her ex-coach, talked of a supposed story exposing GW’s interference, and said she had thoughts of a lawsuit. Try and confuse the issues as much as you want but those are the facts of the day.
You and I can argue about recruiting, power struggles, etc. but we cannot prove it one way or the other. DY may have been great when it comes to dealing with the non-revenue sports at a University but she has burned bridges at one University and just hosted a laughable press conference at another. You seem like a very smart guy and I usually agree with a lot of the comments that you write here but you have to admit that DY really handled this whole situation horribly?
