Jalen Rose in Hot Water at ESPN Because He Didn’t Tell Them About His DUI
Jalen Rose was popped for DUI on March 11. It took nearly three weeks for the story to emerge. In the interim, Rose was on every ESPN platform imaginable, pumping up his Fab 5 30-by-30 documentary. Unknowingly, ESPN ran the risk of being humiliated – can you imagine the reaction if Rose were on Sportscenter, prattling on about Grant Hill and Uncle Toms, as news was breaking that he was arrested for DUI?
Worst yet is this quote from ESPN brass about the night the story broke:
Meanwhile, ESPN was trying to confirm the story through Rose’s agent and its own reporting.
“Some of the story the agent was telling us was inconsistent with our reporting,” said Vince Doria, ESPN’s senior vice president and director of news.
Inconsistent being code for … what, exactly?
Rose has apologized. He’s got a lengthy message on his website. Still, he’s been suspended (there’s no mention if he’s still getting paid). It seems like 2-weeks is standard operating procedure for anyone who gets in a dust-up with the law (see Bryant, Howard).
Then the question becomes – is ESPN so pissed about how he handled this that they bury him on NBA playoff coverage? Or will he regain his role as a prominent member of the ESPN NBA team?

Unknowingly
Bullshit. They had a 30/30 to promote.
April 1st, 2011 at 3:19 PM
His DUI has nothing to do with the content of the documentary. Shady to not tell them or for ESPN to keep it quiet yes, but anyone arguing this gives credibility to their side of the Fab Five should be liquidated.

Anyone see Simmons’ NBA column today. His thoughts on Rose and how the blogosphere completely shits on him is pretty representative of most of the comments here…

OR THE RETURN OF STEPHEN A. SMITH
April 1st, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Yep, he’s dead on. He still didn’t explain why he should be the MVP over other players. He just made a bunch of random observations.

Exactly. DUI = stripes.

OR THE RETURN OF STEPHEN A. SMITH
It really upsets me that this chotch (Hi SG!) broke the story of Bosh/Lebron/Wade all going to Miami; thus giving him relevancy for another couple of years.
April 1st, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Yep, he’s dead on. He still didn’t explain why he should be the MVP over other players. He just made a bunch of random observations.….
that aren’t backed up with statistics. Or reasons why Rose is better than Paul/Lebron/Howard
April 1st, 2011 at 3:35 PM
I thought the atmosphere was pretty awesome when the Sox were in Milwaukee a couple years back…made it out to a couple games and had a good time
April 1st, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Did Screamin’ Stephen A.! actually break that story or did he just guess correctly?
April 1st, 2011 at 3:36 PM
And believe me, I could use Paul to eviscerate arguments for D-Rose. It would not be pretty.
April 1st, 2011 at 3:38 PM
He did say that next week’s column will have his MVP choice.
April 1st, 2011 at 3:38 PM

I’ll give them the credit of being better than the moronic Cubs fans that invade that place every year – in that they go to actually watch a baseball game. I refuse to go to any more Cubs/Brewers games… the amount of obnoxious drunks/fights roaming the bleachers (fans of both teams) was ridiculous.
/get off my damn lawn!
April 1st, 2011 at 3:39 PM
You can’t be the MVP in New Orleans unless you bring the city back. Chris paul failed at that basic task, leaving it wide open for the Saints to save the Crescent City and, thus, allowing the Hornets to move away from the 504 permanently. Obviously, with these critical facts, Rose is the obvious choice for MVP. Orlando doesn’t even exist so that eliminates Dwight Howard, as well
April 1st, 2011 at 3:39 PM
Did Screamin’ Stephen A.! actually break that story or did he just guess correctly?
Guessing. Reporting. It’s all the same these days.

April 1st, 2011 at 3:42 PM
The biggest error is see people making when arguing for or against DRose as MVP is when they fail to see the difference between Best Player and Most Valuable Player. like the +/- or the formula that says if you trade so and so for so and so they would only win 1 less game is ridiculously stupid.
April 1st, 2011 at 3:42 PM
Going to one next week, will be sure to have my Sox cap on…if I have to fight a Cub fan so be it, I can hold my liquor better and will be more coordinated, advantage me
I remember the days back in the early 90′s when the Brewers were still in the AL… some memorable Sox/Brewers games at County Stadium. Miss that place. Cubs fans are just pathetic, self-loathing assholes.
April 1st, 2011 at 3:42 PM
I saw that Dodger-giant story this morning and knew there would be a post about with dim-witted commenters taking shot’s at LA. Aside from I think 2 of you, It actually wasn’t so bad. Let me say this, Out of 56,000 people last night, 2 Dodger fans beat the shit out of 3 giant fans (which, I gotta admit, made me smile a little). But that’s 5 people total. It’s not that big of a deal. And I’ll also say the drunken fans that sanders mentioned are the most hilarious, knowledgeable fans you could ever hope to sit by, If you’re a Dodger fan that is. And yes, I take part in jeering fans of opposing teams while partaking in alcohol. Partly fueled by the notion that LA sports fans are laid back and don’t really care and show up late and leave early. But if you’re wearing any other teams stuff, you’ll hear it from me. Gotta protect the house.

April 1st, 2011 at 3:44 PM
His DUI has nothing to do with the content of the documentary.
I don’t think that’s TBL’s point. I think he means that it would have been similar to having Charlie Sheen on CBS at the same time that news leaks out that he is out with hookers and blow.
While I don’t mind his analysis (let’s face it: he’s better than Wilbon), I think he’s likely to face some backlash from ESPN — which has been working really hard in the last year or so to end the frathouse dorm culture that has led to so many problems in the last few years.
April 1st, 2011 at 3:45 PM

Yea, it sucks the guy had to go to the hospital. It made me smile a little. Then I got to the part of the article that said he was hospitalized and rolled my eyes. It’s embarrassing but not so bad that people should judge all Dodger fans and let alone, the whole city. That’s just idiotic.

As far as I know, LA sports fans are the only ones who seem to be continually murdering/stabbing/beating up people in the parking lots after games. Wasn’t there just a stabbing at the USC-UCLA game a few months back?

Nope. Honda Civic.

See how easy it is for fights to start at games? I usually just boo as they walk by me. I don’t think you’d ‘monkey stomp’ me. Though it is ironic that you tell me to grow up directly after making that comment.

Many of the Saints fans who went to Seattle for the playoff game came back with tales of just this kind of thing happening — wearing their gear and getting shouted at, pelted with stuff and all kinds of really shitty behavior. Not just to guys, but to old people, families, etc.
Unfortunately, picking a fight in that environment is a recipe for disaster. Cops/security are never nearby and they’re rarely in enough numbers to prevent cuts or broken bones.

stark: parking officials don’t let you park anywhere you want anymore. I used to park under the Think Blue sign and under that hill with the houses on top and drink. A few years ago they started making everyone park next to each other filling every space. You have to wait until the attendants move on to start cracking beers.

I will NEVER understand heaving unprovoked insults at someone else simply because they don’t cheer for the same set of laundry/aren’t from the same city as you. It’s one thing to create a raucous environment by cheering loudly/booing, etc. But after the game is over… the ultimate sign of an undeveloped mind is giving opposing fans shit for traveling to cheer on their team.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:03 PM
And I’d never say ‘brah’. Good god man……
Let’s agree then: we’ll boo each other until we’re horse. Though I usually leave Cubs fans alone. They’ve suffered enough.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Usually when I see a confrontation between the away fans at Steeler games, it’s when away guy acts all obnoxious and does a standing ovation after a 6 yard gain. You are asking for trouble if you do that. There is always a fan form the other team sitting next to me, and I have never had a problem with them. Basically don’t act like an asshole, and we get along just fine.
/waits for an unfunny steelers fan jab
April 1st, 2011 at 4:07 PM
I have not seen one person, at least around here, say anything like that. And MVP, at least to their team, is most definitely Paul.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:07 PM

The only time I think it’s warranted is when someone is being an obnoxious (usually drunk) douchebag. As happened during the Jets-Saints game of years back — where Kyle Turley ripped that helmet off that Jets player and tossed it. There were a few Jets fans, liquored up and trying to act all tough by cussing at dads and whatnot. People gave them shit and NOPD removed them for their own safety.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:07 PM
so the team the employed a running back that would reenact a vegas showgirl leg kick routine after a 4 yard gain fan base gets upset if someone stands up and claps for their team after decent play? Makes sense…no wait it doesnt
April 1st, 2011 at 4:09 PM
If that was true, it isn’t but if it was, then he should win. But Rose is the MVP
April 1st, 2011 at 4:10 PM
Mantis, you and I seem to be on the same page. Scary.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Hey Ballz, I didn’t say shit about LA fans, I knew about it, I just pointed out that if it happened in Philly, the entire nation would know about it.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:13 PM
I used to say it was Rose with a bullet. But I’m actually starting to lean more towards Kobe or Howard. Imagine the Magic without Dwight. Yeesh. Let’s see how the season turns out.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:13 PM
And MVP, at least to their team, is most definitely Paul.
His value just doubled with David West’s injury.
I don’t see how Rose doesn’t win it, regardless of what anyone else does. Paul gets dinged up because the Hornets are a #6-7 seed. Bron because he’s got Wade and RuP with him.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:13 PM
I’ve been to over a hundred Steeler games, and most of the trouble occurs when both parties are shitfaced drunk. Lucky for me, I’m a happy drunk.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:14 PM
If the award was best statistical player, LeBron would just win it every year. That’s not the point. The award isn’t “Most Talented Player,” it’s “Most Valuable Player.” I don’t think Rose is a better player than LeBron or Dwight. But his value to the Bulls, this regular season, is more than that of LeBron to the Heat and slightly more than Dwight’s to the Magic, in my opinion.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:15 PM
I know. jthussler and someone else. But the whole nation does know about this. It’s on the front page of thebiglead.com for chrissakes!!! Oh, and ESPN, yahoosports, and SI.com.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:17 PM
And I’m also not one of those people that thinks LeBron is automatically disqualified because of Wade and Bosh. But given he was paired with those two, shouldn’t they have locked up the No. 1 seed and just been destroying everything in their path in order for him to win the MVP? Rose has the Bulls in great position to nab the no. 1 seed with a first year head coach and Boozer and Noah missing huge chunks due to injury. He did enough to keep them afloat for that stretch and they made a run to the top of the East when he got those guys back. To me, that’s the most impressive thing of any of the candidates this season.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:19 PM
But his value to the Bulls, this regular season, is more than that of LeBron to the Heat and slightly more than Dwight’s to the Magic, in my opinion.
Not if you look at the numbers. Take him off the bulls and they’re still a great defensive team. And defense is why they’re winning games. It’s not their 15th ranked offense that’s winning these games.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:19 PM
I’m sorry, but this is what I mean by Bulls fans are the worst fans walking the planet. Chris Paul is dragging a squad with Emeka fucking Okafor as a number 2 into the playoffs in the tougher conference. But there is no way he’s the MVP.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:20 PM
In an extremely tougher conference.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:20 PM
Bulls Efficiency differential w/o Rose: 7.26, Heat w/o LeBron: .11, Magic w/o Dwight: .9, Hornets w/o CP: -7.93
April 1st, 2011 at 4:21 PM
There’s some ammo for ya Jersey.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:23 PM
I agree defense is a big part of their success. But what is their 15th ranked offense if he’s not on the team? 25th? Would not be CLOSE to as good a team without him. Same for Dwight I understand, but given the injuries the Bulls have had and the energy brings (and I think Simmons did make a great point that Rose has to make all the crunch time offensive plays), I’d give him the slight edge over Rose.
Again, it’s not just all about numbers.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:23 PM
Thanks Badger. I forgot you dropping that off the other week. But I’m sure someone will say “I don’t care about efficiency numbers, Rose is the MVP because I said so.”
April 1st, 2011 at 4:24 PM
And who do you think makes all the crunch time plays for the Hornets?
April 1st, 2011 at 4:25 PM
West just got injured when? Last week? Yes his supporting cast is weaker than Rose’s, and it shows, because they are a 6/7 seed. (Yes it’s a tougher conference, but the Bulls are a 1 seed.) I don’t understand how Rose leading this Bulls squad with the injuries and new head coach isn’t deserving of MVP consideration. It’s baffling.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:25 PM
But I’m sure someone will say “I don’t care about efficiency numbers, Rose is the MVP because I said so.”
Dollars to donuts, it’ll be the same guy that thinks Tim Thomas is the NHL MVP.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:25 PM
And who do you think makes all the plays for the Hornets?
April 1st, 2011 at 4:26 PM
I never said it’s not. I just think it is insane how Chris Paul is getting ZERO love for MVP consideration yet EVERY argument you can use for Rose can be used for Paul.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:26 PM
Ha. So the Bulls would be better off without Rose. Well, that settles it then. You win, Badger.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:27 PM
West is no Boozer, Deng, and Noah. Get outta here with that nonsense.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Every comment you and most of the commenters in here is to tear down Rose. I’m not hating on Paul at all. That team would absolutely be in the gutter of the West without him. I just personally think it’s a little more impressive for Rose to carry that Bulls squad to a 1 seed considering Miami, Boston and Orlando are in that conference than Paul carrying a crappy squad to a 6 seed. Still very impressive for Paul, though.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:29 PM
No, it’s just you take a bunch of measures and statistics? Nope, Rose wins. Ok, you say Chris Paul is as or maybe even more responsible for his team’s success or failure? Nope, Rose wins. Paul has a team that didn’t get significantly better in the offs eason to the playoffs. Nope, Rose wins. You see where I am going with this?
April 1st, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Link it.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:30 PM
And who do you think makes all the plays for the Hornets?
Willie Green.
/kidding
West is no Boozer, Deng, and Noah. Get outta here with that nonsense.
West is actually the best crunch-time scorer for the Hornets. If it’s under 2 minutes and they need a basket to tie or take the lead, it’s going to West.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:32 PM
I guess it’s semantics than. I’m juts saying, if everyone wants to hearken on “Most Valuable Player” there a bunch of measures that indicate that Paul is more deserving than Rose. Straight up.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:32 PM
What I’m saying Jersey is I don’t think you can just look at a bunch of stats and use that to solely determine who is MVP. Maybe that’s how you’d do it, but not me. If that’s the case we should just move on. I already said I don’t think Rose is a better statistical player than James, Dwight, Kobe, etc. But his effort and importance to the Bulls THIS SEASON is MVP worthy. Maybe the stats don’t back me up. Perhaps the award should be changed to Most Impressive Statistical Performance.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:34 PM
So how do you do it LongLive? Enlighten me.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:34 PM
Are people really arguing against Derrick Rose for MVP?
April 1st, 2011 at 4:34 PM
Again, I can say the EXACT same thing about Chris Paul.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:35 PM
Yes.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:36 PM
I didnt think there was any doubt that Rose IS his team and is carrying them to a #1 seed in a top heavy conference.
Without a doubt he should be MVP IMO.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:37 PM
Bulls, first in the East.
Hornet, #6 in the West.
MVP’s dont go to players that are on average to shitty teams.
Kevin Love for MVP then!
April 1st, 2011 at 4:37 PM
Chris Paul is his team and is carrying his team into the playoffs in a heavy heavy conference that doesn’t have to feats on the Cavs, Pistons, and WIzards multiple times this season.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:38 PM
Kevin Love for MVP then!
You’d have had better luck with a “Blake Griffin for MVP” chant.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:38 PM
Dude, I’m not trying to be an ass. I just don’t get the consensus from the non-Bulls fans here that Rose being a deserving MVP is just a bunch of retarded hype being built by the mainstream. He’s had an INCREDIBLE season and has led a team that most probably thought would be in the 4-5 range to a No. 1 seed. I fully understand they have a good defense and that the LeBron’s, Paul’s, Dwight’s and Kobe’s of the world have had outstanding seasons as well. I just think Rose has had the biggest impact on an elite team of any player this season. My opinion man, we’ll see what happens when the votes come in.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:40 PM
Again, point me to where I say this? I’m not being an ass either. I’m just trying to make an argument that Paul is more derving than Rose.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:41 PM
I guess what it comes down to is you are more impressed by Paul carrying a team in the West to a 6/7 seed and I am more impressed by Rose carrying a team in the East to a 1 seed. Not gonna change your mind, and I’m not gonna change yours. So be it.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:41 PM
So if the Suns were in the playoff hunt, Steve Nash would have to bein consideration for MVP then huh? He is similar statistically to Paul.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:43 PM
So if the Suns were in the playoff hunt, Steve Nash would have to bein consideration for MVP then huh? He is similar statistically to Paul.
He also has 2 MVP’s…. do you not recall this?
April 1st, 2011 at 4:44 PM
We are talking this season. WTH does the past have to do with this years MVP?
April 1st, 2011 at 4:44 PM
Clearly Nash deserves more consideration than Dwight because No. 10 in the West is more impressive than No. 4 in the East.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:45 PM
IMO, not trying to ruffle any feathers here, but for someone to state Chris Paul should be MVP over Rose, they seriously have not been watching or following the NBA this year.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:45 PM
I think Clown is the only actual Derek Rose hater. Everybody else I’m seeing is just questioning him as an MVP lock when it seems like the discussion should be wide open. I’ve said it before but it bears repeating: If you agree with SC on a sports topic it is worth at least questioning that belief
April 1st, 2011 at 4:46 PM
You just said… “if the suns were in the playoff hunt, Nash would have to be in consideration.” Well, they’re not in the playoffs, that’s why he’s not in consdieration. But when they were good, he won 2 MVP’s. Chris Paul IS Steve Nash (carrying a crappy team to the playoffs), only he doesn’t have Amare. I don’t see what point you’re trying to make here other than you don’t have one.
April 1st, 2011 at 4:48 PM
IMO, not trying to ruffle any feathers here, but for someone to state Chris Paul should be MVP over Rose, they seriously have not been watching or following the NBA this year.
How many Hornets games have you watched?
April 1st, 2011 at 4:49 PM
Me saying that Rose shouldn’t be the MVP isn’t me saying that he’s not a good player. I’d hardly say calling someone the 2nd or 3rd or 4th best player in the world this year an insult.

I’m pretty sure it’s closer to “there’s no way he deserves over Dwight/LeBron/Paul” as opposed to “he could win, but he’s not a lock.”
I don’t think he’s a lock by any means. Can make a very strong argument for Dwight, and if the Lakers catch the Spurs and Kobe lights it up in this last stretch, he could take it too. I just don’t see how Rose isn’t every bit as deserving, or how it’s unfathomable that he’s the slight leader at this point.

Well, maybe you don’t, but the national media does. That’s why we’re all up in arms. Because it doesn’t make sense.

Really you dont understand? Your the one clearly misinformed.
When Steve Nash won MVP’s they were one of the top teams in the league. How was NASH carrying a crappy team to the playoffs?
The Hornets are NOT the Suns of a few years ago. MVP’s are not won by players carrying crappy teams. MVP’s are for players on upper echelon teams.

No my man. You haven’t watched enough Hornets games.

Because he was the MVP….
I love that you call me misinformed when I’m the guy watching the hornets more than twice this season and using statistics to back up my claims.

And they were both a little undeserved then.

This escalated quickly.

They were one of the top teams in the league because of steve nash. how are the knicks doing this year with amare?

Thats fair, I agree.

And this attitude I don’t really get either. Who cares what the mainstream media says? Isn’t forming your opinion on who the MVP shouldn’t be based on who the mainstream loves kinda silly? Would Dwight be any less deserving if the mainstream media considered him the favorite. This whole going against the establishment for the sake of going the establishment idea is weird.

Are you an idiot?
You compared Steve Nash MVP seasons to Chris Paul this year.
Is Paul carrying his team to a top seed? No. Nash did.

Well the mainstream media are the people voting for it.. so yeah, I should care.

Nash was great in his two MVP seasons and Amare is underperforming. Therefore, Derrick Rose is not this year’s MVP.

Does Paul have ANYONE else on his team? ANYONE?

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Anyway, I gotta run. I’m sure this isn’t the last of the MVP discussion. Have a good weekend everyone.
April 1st, 2011 at 5:00 PM
If anyone is pro-establishment, it’s me. But seriously though, there are some very well founded numbers that back up Paul. All I hear is “well Rose has his team as the number 1 in the East”. Okay, all that tells me is that with him on it, they are number 1 on the East. That doesn’t tell me if he is more valuable than Paul or not.

Where did I do this?
April 1st, 2011 at 5:01 PM
Can you name New Orleans starting 5?
April 1st, 2011 at 6:17 PM
Los Angeles sucks.
