Nolan Nawrocki Continues Hammering Cam Newton: “Fraud, Delusional About His Past, Con Artist”
How accurately can you judge someone’s smile if you’ve never spent a minute with them? That’s what Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly did.
Because of the massive interest Nawrocki generated yesterday with his brutal portrayal of the potential No. 1 pick in next month’s NFL draft, the writer held a conference call today. [UPDATE: That may not be the case. One writer says the conference call had been previously scheduled, but perhaps PFW decided to email the world about it after the initial Newton comments were made. I do not regularly receive emails from PFW, but I did this morning.] It took 50 minutes but he was finally bombarded with Cam Newton questions. Nawrocki hedged a bit at first – “I don’t think [Newton's evaluation] was any different from the evaluations we’ve been producing for 33 years,” and then compared Newton’s character to that of Jimmy Clausen (“a disingenuous player with a scripted sense of entitlement”) and JaMarcus Russell.
Nawrocki went on to say he talked to “a lot of people who best know the kid and are familiar with him and can speak to his character, his makeup and personality.”
I pressed Nawrocki for specifics about whether or not he spent time with Newton (“no”) and then for any detail he could provide about just who these “sources” were (without asking him, you know, to name them).
“Decision-makers,” he said. “Three-to-five of them expressed that [Newton] was disillusioned about his past [Ed. presumably the Florida incidents], that he was a fraud, a narcissist and a con-artist.” Nawrocki said he spoke to people at Florida and Auburn and in the NFL.
Nawrocki even addressed silly internet rumors that he actually went to the University of Florida (“No. I went to the University of Illinois”).
So what to make of Cam Newton? Were these alleged fake smiles delivered in the huddle? To coaches? Women? Did he charm bouncers to get into bars? Win over teachers with a grin?
Everyone is coached before heading to the combine, so you can chalk this performance up to good acting. I’m a bit puzzled by the con-artist and fraud comments. What is that in regards to? It’s pretty brutal and unfair to call someone a con-artist and a fraud without backing it up. Is he a fraud because he allegedly cheated on tests? Is he a con-artist because of the way he handled his Dad supposedly pocketing money for sending his kid to Auburn instead of Mississippi State? Who exactly did he con?
Couldn’t Nawrocki press his “decision-makers” to put these harsh words into context?
The narcissist comments are not surprising – the guy’s a good-looking, 6-foot-5 superstar who just rolled the best conference in college football, won the Heisman Trophy and a National title. It was one of the greatest seasons in college football history. Of course he’s going to have a high opinion of himself.
It’s rip jobs like this that will have me rooting for Cam Newton in the pros.

“Decision-makers,”
W. has no love for Cam
March 30th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
I forget, did Mike Florio’s character assassination of Aaron Rodgers ever get a post here? Seems like TBL is acting as Cam Newton’s agent these past few months…very amusing
March 30th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
Even though he spoke with several people, I do feel a bit uneasy with his criticisms seeing as how he never met the guy. I do think that is unfair. However, if he is reporting what was said to him, then he should be able to sleep at night just fine. It does seem like a rather harsh take down, but I haven’t read his other assessments, so maybe this is just how this guys rolls.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
i fully expect to be hammered over some of this. fine.
i’m no Cam Newton apologist.
But this is an absolute smear job. cheap. tawdry.
gimmie a break.

I just hope he’s learned how to pee and poop at the same time, because really, that’s what is important in life.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
We will see where the loyalty really is when Cam Newton passes up signing with Kellog and instead signs with General Mills.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:16 PM
with a scripted sense of entitlement
What the hell is a scripted sense of entitlement? Like, if someone was creating a character that had a sense of entitlement they would creat Jimmy Clausen?
March 30th, 2011 at 3:16 PM
yep.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
Do you ask him if he was gay?
March 30th, 2011 at 3:18 PM
What if he’s right? I agree that this seems almost personal, but what if everything the scout said was true? Will you put up a few “Nolan Nawrocki was right” posts up and offer a public mea culpa?
March 30th, 2011 at 3:18 PM
I don’t disagree that I think Cam is a bit of a phony/douche, but he dominated last year. I would have a sense of entitlement too if I did what Cam did last year.

Are you gonna move the draft back to 10:00 tonight?
March 30th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
I still don’t see what the big deal is, perhaps it’s a harsh analysis. Teams will do their own assessment of Newton and reach their own conclusions. This was a third party report and there is no evidence to suggest that any teams give the report merit.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:22 PM

He should be careful about looking for too long at his reflection in his trophies. He could starve to death.

it’s scouting man…all shit’s subject to change. remember, the nazi’s thought the shit joan pujol garcia was telling them about the planned allied invastion was true…
/fuck de gaulle and the french
March 30th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
This seems like something of an overreaction. Nawrocki releases similarly harsh scouting reports on guys every year; he’s not working in PR, he’s in the business of reporting what his sources in the scouting community say.
I don’t always agree with him–he thought Eddie Royal was a prima donna, for instance, which is hardly true–but it’s not like this is really that unusual.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
I’d create Spaulding Smails
March 30th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
Good point, but this is a good story for blogs. It involves both CFB and the NFL and it has some pretty harsh words for the Heisman trophy winner. While I agree that this man’s opinion matters not, I think it’s worth a post or 2.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
What’s Nawrocki’s track record on these things? The guy’s been doing this for awhile, he’s gotten it right on a couple of guys, so really, it comes down to what you think of Nawrocki’s credibility.
I doubt Cam Newton is taking this as personally as the internet commentariat.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
I had never heard of the guy until the other day. I have no clue what his record looks like as far as these things are concerned.
Not sure about this. I could see Newton sitting in his house going third person on the room. “Cam Newton ain’t no prima donna. Cam Newton just wants to be an icon and an entertainer and win some football games.”
March 30th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
yes, if Cam flames out due to his character, I will gladly say i was wrong.
but fwiw, this post has zero to do with actual football talent.

Are you gonna move the draft back to 10:00 tonight?
Was there discussion of this being moved that I didn’t see? My team page still says 7:30 EST.
Not that I can make either one. I’m taking my fiancee to the symphony tonight.
/no really, I am.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
It’s fair to just call them a fraud. But not a con-artist and a fraud.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
True. As an NCAA athlete he’s most likely huddled under a bridge, starving and cold. Either that or being whipped by his mas’er to run faster.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
I’m not sold on Cam Newton as high pick. I’ve got a post coming up where I present a case for #1.
That said, I think it’s lazy “scouting” to say the things he said without ever talking to the player. I don’t care if 3-5 “decision makers” said things to you–a) they have an incentive to lie to you; b) it may not be a representative view.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
but fwiw, this post has zero to do with actual football talent.
While true, it’s also true that mental makeup can affect or even undermine entirely actual football talent.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
anyone notice that cj and gal have disappeared after they said ti was nasty for guys to poop and pee at the same time? i think their heads asploded
March 30th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
But if I were a team about to drop a shitload of money on a guy, I would want to know if this shit were true.

Either that or they got one big joke over on the rest of us.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
anyone notice that cj and gal have disappeared after they said ti was nasty for guys to poop and pee at the same time?
Did they really say that? I mean,. yeah it’s nasty to do that in the shower. But sitting on the can everything is fair game.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
if someone was creating a character that had a sense of entitlement they would creat Jimmy Clausen?
Yes. It already happened. The Jimmy Clausen that you have come to know and love was, in fact, a figment of Ben Hecht’s imagination right up until he was born.

Off topic but it seems to be heading that direction anyway. Downtime at work and making a playlist for halfmarathon this weekend. Anyone have any favorite songs for running? My playlist is very stale…

i need to break out the jump rope today, at a minimum.

March 30th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
Is this a black thing? Who was the last black QB to be drafted that everyone was fine with their personality and self-assuredness? McNabb? Come one. Can you imagine being him for the past 18 months? At 20 years old? My gawd, how frickin surreal. I hope that the team that takes him REFUSES to start him for two years. He needs to settle down, be comfortable in home and hearth, and let the world pass him by for awhile while he learns.

Easy enough to say, but how many players is Nawrocki going to write up in this year’s Draft Guide? A few hundred? Is he going to personally interview them all? 50? Even the Top 25?
Not to mention access, which might be kind of a problem, seeing as a guy like Newton is probably being pulled 20 directions at once.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
I lope along at a leisurely pace getting passed by real runners. I got injured leading up to my first full last year, so this is be trying to get back into it. I’m marrying a runner who got me addicted to it.

They let you use ipods? On my half-marathons, they were banned. Ofcourse, I haven’t run one in a couple years.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Is this a black thing? Who was the last black QB to be drafted that everyone was fine with their personality and self-assuredness? McNabb? Come one.
Nope. Philly fans are still booing that pick (supidly, it turns out). Same draft but Culpepper and Shaun King didn’t have any real personality questions coming in.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
Is Newton’s agent paying something for the face lift?
March 30th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
Get used to that. I have weights at home and still, I struggle to find the time and mine’s a toddler.
And I hope you’ve reconciled with never sleeping past 6AM again whether you want to or not.

Discouraged, but I’ve never (this is only my fourth diff race though) had a race disallow them entirely, unless you were elite/competing for money. Halfs are just enough distance that its hard work, but you could run one and not be dead for a week after, and it’s a great excuse to visit a new city and get an interesting point of view of the best sights.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
What is this doing for Nolan Nawrocki?
Oh yeah, getting his name out there, just like he wanted.
Great job TBL!

Easy enough to say, but how many players is Nawrocki going to write up in this year’s Draft Guide? A few hundred? Is he going to personally interview them all? 50? Even the Top 25?
Then he doesn’t have to say things about personality. I’m sure not every scouting report says that a guy is a choir boy or demon.
Spouting is not scouting. I would hope that every person he is commenting on physically, he has viewed tape–combine, game tape, etc. I trust that when Mayock is telling me about a player’s “hips” he has actually watched them and isn’t just basing it on second hand statements.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
Josh Freeman. Jason Campbell from the very same school coming off an undefeated season.
/not a black thing
March 30th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
They weren’t booing McNabb.
They were booing because most fans at the time wanted Ricky Williams. I realize how silly that sounds, but it is actually true.
McNabb did great things for the franchise, on and off the field, and Eagle fans that don’t recognize that (a loud minority, unfortunately) are mostly fools.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
But…succeeding in professional football, apparently, involves a lot more than just “actual football talent,” especially at the QB position. Just ask Jeff George or Jamarcus Russell.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
How much access is there to the student athletic trainers and other staff. I remember at Pitt, they were all very coached to answer as few questions as possible, and never say anything negative. But I heard a lot of stories about Antonio Bryant that I could have written a (fairly accurate) version along the Nawrocki lines, and it would have been true, without me ever meeting him. I dated one of Larry Fitz’s trainers later on, and never heard anything but nice things about him and his work ethic etc. I don’t think second-hand information is to be entirely discounted.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Ok, I take it all back. Dude went to U of I. He doesn’t know anything about football.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Everything you just said pretty much. I never booed McNabb, but all the idiot Eagles fans (majority of the fanbase) never wanted him. They would’ve preferred Jeff Garcia or AJ Feeley or anyone who was white.
/lots of unsaid of racism among Eagles fans
March 30th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Seriously though, what are the odds that Nawrocki is right here?
I would say 65% chance he is dead on.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Yes, and he effectivley killed the shower beer discussion when he did.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Narcissism is not a disqualifier to being a successful quarterback. I’d be interested in seeing psych profiles for the QB’s in the Hall of Fame.
Will he study the play book and be ready every Sunday?
Will he keep his nose clean, not get arrested, and be available?
He’ll be a leader if he wins, and won’t be if he loses. Those are the questions I want my people to answer.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:48 PM

I’m fine if a scout used this method and clearly reported it as info that he was given, and I would be wanting facts from those people not just opinion (he did this before, and acted this way with people, etc). Those aren’t unbiased “decisionmakers” who have no incentive to tell the truth to an independent scout, though. I would consider that appropriate scouting, because that would mean interviewing people.

There is only one thing I wan tto ask CAM:
“What does $160k look like in a paper bag”?

Why not? If the guys he’s talking to are relaying concerns about the personal makeup of the kid, why wouldn’t he? It’s clearly not a case of “one guy told me this one thing.” If the talk is a-flyin’, and Nawrocki’s hardly the only draft analyst who’s made mention of this, then the talk will get reported.
Seems to me Cam’s outsize celebrity is causing knee-jerks all over the place: people who want to hate on him are doubling up, and the people who want to rush to his defense no matter what are seeing shadows.
No, but again: if the issue is a topic of conversation amongst the folks who actually have a role in these decisions, it will definitely be in any scouting report.
