Alex Ovechkin Sought Revenge On Tuomo Ruutu
Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu hit Washington’s Dennis Wideman last night, leaving him shook up on the ice. No penalty was called on the play.
Wideman’s teammate, Alexander Ovechkin, witnessed the hit and took exception. He spent the rest of the game trying to exact revenge on Ruutu. You mess with Ovi’s teammates and you find out firsthand why his high school yearbook quote was, “они вытягивают нож, вас вытягивают пушку. Она посылает одно из вашего к стационару, вы посылает одно из ее к моргу. То путь в Москва!” [via DC Sports Bog]

the constant blowing of hockey fans is ….
great for variety!
March 30th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Uh. What? They ran into each other while Ruutu was trying to hurdle him to avoid the hit. But whatever gets you motivated I guess.
March 30th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I enjoyed how Ruutu laughed at Ovi the whole time.
March 30th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Spectacular CRM.
March 30th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
WWOS, please come defend your “Suter is just an overrated name” comment from the prior post.
March 30th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
This shows what a tough guy Ovie is. That pussy Crosby would run like a girl.

Is there where I put this?
It’s the Caps year. There’s going to be a massive summer party in Moscow this year.

Can’t see them getting past the Bruins.

From the Phillies post.

Caps fans are the worst. “Ovie Rules! Hockey was invented in 2006!”
March 30th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
It would definitely be beneficial for Washington to get the top seed and have the Flyers-Bruins bloodbath occur in the Eastern semis. I have found myself watching more Caps games the last few weeks (despite Joe Beninati being the Hawk Harrelson of hockey announcers) and they look excellent.
Boudreau has done something with that defense, some might even call it that dreaded T-Word. I really like their chances. Plus, Bruce’s job depends on them getting to at least the ECF.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Sorry… the new posts show up late so I always miss the start. If you guys say Suter is good, I’ll go along with it. But he was nothing special at all in the past couple of the games I saw.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Great sequence of events.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:05 PM

March 30th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
I’ll grant that it’s a tough comp given they play together so much.
- They play similar total ice time, Suter plays more at even strength,
- They play similar quality of competition while Suter plays with lesser teammates.
- Suter has a slightly better Corsi Rel at even strength (essentially more shots directed at the opponents net while he is on the ice 5v5).
- Suter has a slightly weaker zone start (meaning he starts more in the D zone
/my response on Suter
March 30th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
The more the merrier. Without the bandwagons there’d only be 1,000 people at the UC and that wouldn’t be very fun. I welcome any and all people to the Hawks’ bandwagon. Especially if you live/grew up here.
Starting to not really associate bandwagonism with negativity anymore.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
I didn’t play hockey till I was a teenager, and played mostly unorganized outside in the park, where half the goal was just to check people into the snowbanks, so I don’t know the intricacies as much as I do with football/baseball. From what I saw though, it’s pretty easy to tell that Rinne is fantastic, and Weber is the best skater/handler. When he settles a puck or moves it up the ice, it’s just different, and I don’t see that in Suter at all, he has a lot more ‘clumsy’ moments than I’d expect of a great player.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Do they still play that stupid song after every goal?
March 30th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Caps fans are the worst. “Ovie Rules! Hockey was invented in 2006!”
Pssh. Every Caps fan I know is a lifelong fan.
/Lifelong defined as since they moved to DC and then someone on their kickball team told them liking the Caps was cool.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
and I don’t see that in Suter at all, he has a lot more ‘clumsy’ moments than I’d expect of a great player.
Small sample size I guess, I can assure you that at $3.5M per year Suter is a steal.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
You forgot something… here, let me get that for you.
/sour grapes
March 30th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Because he’s dirty, he loves to start shit without backing it up, and he’s an all around douche bag. I don’t like him.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Most of that is above me, and I’ll certainly yield to your say-so, but I have never seen him control a play the way Weber does. If you had no real positions, and no jersey numbers/names, you could tell which one was Weber very easily. I don’t see that with Suter, or at least haven’t. (Though one of those games, he did make a couple plays to win the game).
March 30th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Pssh. Every Caps fan I know is a lifelong fan.
If any of them were fans of the 1975 Caps team (doubtful) then I have a ton of respect for them.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Somehow, either defense, or more likely offensive possessions, seems to be a bit of an issue though, because Rinne faces too many shots, and has to make too many great saves just to keep them in games. I’m not sure having six 15-goal scorers is as good as having two 25-30 goal scorers
March 30th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I think I have had one Amstel Light in my life
March 30th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Because he’s dirty, he loves to start shit without backing it up, and he’s an all around douche bag.
All of these points are true and I can understand why you hate him. Still a hell of a player though.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
Suter is a solid player, WWOS. But there is definitely no question that Weber is the best D on that team. Contributes at both ends. Rinne is massive and a good goaltender.
BUT HE’S NO REAL AMERICAN TIM FUCKING THOMAS!
/throws snowball at Geez
March 30th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
I’m not sure having six 15-goal scorers is as good as having two 25-30 goal scorers
In the regular season I might tend to agree, but come playoff time I think you’re better off with balanced scoring as you are typically facing (assuming you’re not playing the Caps) a better defensive team for a 7 game series.
Oh, and Rinne is the Preds most important player, without question.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Why does Geez hate Tim Thomas so much? He’s pretty awesome.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Perry, Getzlaf and Ryan are all locked up for the next 2+ years in the 5 mil range. Fuck the Ducks.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Why does Geez hate Tim Thomas so much? He’s pretty awesome.
I don’t hate Thomas at all CJ, he’s had an incredible year and should be nominated for the Hart, he just shouldn’t win it.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
He’s still angry this happened to his favorite team.
/cranking it up a notch
March 30th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
I do like that the two teams I follow (Bruins/Preds) have fantastic goal-tenders. First Preds game I ever went to with my fiance, she left saying how awesome Rinne is. He is something to see in person.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:19 PM

/BEST. GAME. EVAR!!!!
March 30th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
I would settle for knowing who Denis Maruk and Bengt Gustafsson were.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
I do like that the two teams I follow (Bruins/Preds) have fantastic goal-tenders.
Abundance of riches at the NHL level in net for both of those franchises. Rask and Lindback are solid backups.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Probably, but this year will be different. I think.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Bengt Gustafsson
Don’t get me started on him, John Ziegler and the NHL fucked over the Oilers big time.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Oh, if there was someone named Ruutu involved with a dirty hit, I was expecting it to be Jarko and not Tuomo.
/keep your Finns straight
March 30th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
What is the timetable for Dan Ham’s return?
March 30th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Lindback is a giant. A friend of mine lives in his building, and isn’t a small guy himself, and is dwarfed by him.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
I’ve heard Tim Thomas is a total asshole. Did you see the All-Star draft coverage at all? Carey Price was sitting next to him and started talking about one of the guys that was picked (can’t remember who it was). Price was giving the guy accolades about his toughness and Thomas just sat there and ignored him.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
I’d be surprised if we see him prior to the 2nd round.
I have no rational thoughts that say the Canucks aren’t the best team in the NHL this season. But, I can’t shake what my guts tells me about the playoffs, high stakes and the folding of a certain netminder.
To back it up with actual reason… Baba Lu was completely rebuilt by his goaltending coach. I just wonder that come playoff time, if he struggles, does he revert to his old ways and does that spell doom for Vancouver? Those 7 game series are a totally different animal and the West is just brutal this year.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
In fairness to Tim Thomas (who does seem antisocial), it was Carey Price, brah!
March 30th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Wideman sucks. And Thomas shouldn’t get the Hart, but should win the Vezina by a narrow margin over Rinne.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
What is the timetable for Dan Ham’s return?
I’d be surprised if we see him prior to the 2nd round.
I’d be surprised if we see him at all, second concussion this year. Haven’t heard anything recently on Edler’s availability.
/Enjoying SC’s lack of faith in the Canucks coupled with comment #8
March 30th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Hamhuis? He’s apparently better than first thought, though they’re being coy about what exactly is going on. ‘Nucks are like that. No need to rush him back now, so they’ll play it safe. He is a key piece, they need him back. Edler is back skating as well so at least the D is shaping up well. Malhotra still a huge loss.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Price and Thomas referred to each other as friends following their mini-fight/rasslin’ match earlier this season, FWIW
March 30th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Run out of Red-White-Blue kool-aid? I got some if you want it.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Wideman sucks.
Put up another 40 point season…
March 30th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
You actually sound like a canucks fan! Despite them having their best season ever it’s awfully quiet here. Just wait until playoffs.
I have more faith in them this year. They’ve had a different attitude this year – no shooting their mouths off, staying professional the whole way through – and from what is said the Sedins have taken over the team (and Kesler has too). Takes the pressure of Lui. Honestly I think his ‘underachieving’ tag is a little undeserved in the playoffs. He’s won as many series (or at least kept the Canucks in the series) more often than not.
Still the west is so tough it’s hard to see what’s going to happen.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
That’s funny because when I saw the “fight” I immediately thought of Thomas ignoring Price at the All Star draft. I’ve also heard stories about Thomas refusing to sign autographs for little kids and being a prick to people who work for the team.

Apparently a good guy and has really worked his ass off to find a niche in the league.

Thought you’d like that! It’s more a knock on Canucks fans around here, who always look at the “bright side of death” with this team. No one’s ever happy, and even when they keep winning, their fans just keep waiting for something bad to happen so they can bitch about it.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Feel terrible for Malhotra.
Sounds like the surgery was a success (in terms of saving his eye) and the doctor seemed positive he’d play again. But the next 6-8 weeks are critical.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
You’re confusing him with our own Jay Cutler. Tim Thomas is a saint, participates in local philanthropy, saved a wounded deer after it was hit by Dan Carcillo’s Jeep, and has turned bagels into donuts for the homeless.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
I’ve also heard stories about Thomas refusing to sign autographs for little kids and being a prick to people who work for the team.
Haven’t heard any of this, but eh, could be true. Whatever for me, as long as he remains effective, and continues to prove me wrong re: his contract extension.

Whatever for me, as long as he remains effective, and continues to prove me wrong re: his contract extension.
Prepare yourself for a significant regression next year.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
I give him a little bit of a pass for last year because of the Olympics. Same thing happened with Miller at the end of the year too, in terms of fatigue and losing early. And Lui was solid against the Kings in the first round, but the Hawks just get in his head (or, I should say, those meatheads Byufglin – or however you spell it – and Ladd do, and they’re gone).
March 30th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
1.50 GAA and .965 SV% isn’t a regression.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Me too. It was such an innocent looking play, but hopefully he can make it all the way back with his site.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Bstr, I didn’t refer to his SV% as a slight to Luongo, moreso to the rest of the team.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I think that wounded dear was named Jonas Gustavsson.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
No one’s ever happy, and even when they keep winning, their fans just keep waiting for something bad to happen so they can bitch about it.
Oh yes, that is certainly the Vancouver I remember. The vibes I am getting this year from my buddies out there are definitely still cautiously optimistic.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Exactly what I was thinking.
It’s funny that a guy in the league as long as Luongo was affected by guys like Byfuglien and Ladd. Buff is a big, dumb oaf. The ONLY time he got his ass in front of the net on the power play was when he played Vancouver. And I’ve never heard of anyone being rattled because Ladd is on the ice. I love Ladd, but he’s not exactly intimidating.
/miss you the most, Laddy

/miss you the most, Laddy
I’m really looking forward to Rick Dudley overpaying him too.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
I’d say that’s about right. The difference to me this year is the team itself isn’t getting caught up in all this talk. In years past they would be constantly trying to convince everyone how good they really are, but this year they just say something to the effect of “who cares?” and move on to the next game. Drives the reporters crazy, but I’m glad to see it.
I was actually with you on that Geez, the save percentage, just didn’t make it clear!
March 30th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
Zach Parise would fucking love that.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
Zach Parise would fucking love that.
Are you insinuating that Ladd would be used as a comp for Parise?
March 30th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Buff frustrated the hell out of him last year, which I also think was a frustration more with his own D-men who couldn’t move the guy (to your point Geez). It seemed that Buff knew that and felt comfortable in front of the net, which would drive any netminder crazy. And with Ladd it was more his ability to throw off the whole Canucks team. He is the only guy I’ve seen get under Kesler’s skin and really piss him off.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Sigh. I would kill to have him back on the Blackhawks.
Also, I would do a happy dance if Bowman traded Patrick Kane.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Wait until 2014. I don’t like Kane either, but if gets his head on straight before this contract is up, he’s way too useful to trade for anything they’d get in return.
Campbell’s albatross of a contract is the biggest problem and that’s going nowhere.
Parise’s agent is Walsh so I should have said Walsh would love that because he would use Wayne Gretzky as a comp for Jason Strudwick if he put enough time into it.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
