2010-2011 College Basketball All-American 1st Team Has At Least One Surprise
All-Americans: Jimmer, Nolan Smith and Kemba were obvious 1st team All-Americans. Jared Sullinger made the team, too. The last spot was something of a surprise – Purdue’s JaJuan Johnson. He had a nice season – 20 points, 8 rebounds, hit 15 three-pointers after making none the previous three years – but 1st team All-American? Really? Derrick Williams of Arizona had a better season, you just didn’t see him nearly as often because he’s in the Pac-10. Heck, I thought Marcus Morris of Kansas had a more impressive season than Johnson, too. Williams and Morris made 2nd team. It was an odd-year for All-Americans – not a lot of these guys were highly-touted recruits coming out of high school. [WSJ]

I’d venture a guess to say that your reasoning is correct here.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
The Ryan Mallet thread just achieved All-American status.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
East coast bias!
March 30th, 2011 at 2:45 PM
Derrick Williams was somewhat of an afterthought in his recruiting class, too, if I remember correctly, and only when he arrived on campus and started playing, did he become the top frosh on that team.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:46 PM
I’d never heard of Derrick Williams until he made that block to win the Washington game
Those guys are in the NBA already

In related news, can the few Pistons fans in the comments now admit that I was pretty spot on in my expectations of Greg Monroe for this season? He looks like a really good asset for those suckers now after his early season lack of impact, doesn’t he?
March 30th, 2011 at 2:49 PM
Damn. Sad I missed that.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Very true. Which is too bad because he was pretty beastly all season.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
enjoy it before the archives eat it.
Pistons are an abomination. I liked the Monroe pick when it happened and I still like it now, but I’ll be honest, I’ve probably seen 4 quarters of Pistons hoops this year. But Monroe at least seems like he cares and he tries, which is a big upgrade from most of the team.

Monroe = Hibbert >>>> Jeff “I shoot .420 and get 3 rebounds a game as a power forward” Green.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
Very true. Which is too bad because he was pretty beastly all season.
His top 3 draft pick status and millions of dollars of income will be cold comfort for being on the second team

I saw a comment about Sofia. Did a ctl+F for Sofia. Clicked the link. Haven’t been back to the thread.

Monroe is better than Hibbert and Jeff Green shouldn’t be playing the 4. He’s a 3 all the way. Not saying he’s an All Star but he belongs in something like a Mike D’Antoni system where he can play more like Shawn Marion
March 30th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
Needs more Talor Battle
March 30th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
Needs more NCAA tournament victories.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
So, let me get this straight. CJ and SG didn’t think guys could piss and shit at the same time?

So, let me get this straight. CJ and SG didn’t think guys could piss and shit at the same time?
You are correct sir. Their rationale (as I understood it) was that there’s no way that’d guys would do it because then their dongs would rub up against the toilet? And that would be disgusting.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
Monroe is better than Hibbert and Jeff Green shouldn’t be playing the 4.
Green definitely needs the right fit. He could be a very productive player if used right.
Damn can Georgetown recruit. Underachieve in the tournament almost every year. But they sure can recruit. A lot like the Redskins in that they are offseason champions.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
their dongs would rub up against the toilet
Or be smeared in shit or both
March 30th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
That baffles me on many levels.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
I’m still flabbergasted at the Mallet thread.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
Damn can Georgetown recruit.
False. They can recruit big-time talent that has spent their whole life dreaming of wearing that silver and blue but the amount of talent that has leaked out of the DC area without even considering Georgetown over the last few years is appalling. Kevin Durant and Michael Beasley spring immediately to mind but there are plenty of other. For instance, nobody in the area should ever consider going to glorified community college George Mason over GU if they have the chance but there are actually guys who have made that choice in the last several years
March 30th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
That baffles me on many levels.
Me too. I would assume that they just have no comprehension of where our parts are in relation to the toilet/the rest of our bodies when we’re sitting on the john.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Just making the tourney is a victory for PSU hoops
March 30th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Maybe they think we all have Dirk Diggler weiners?
March 30th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
Speaking of Shawn Marion. GAHHHHHHH!

Should have just gotten it cut off, Ronnie Lott-style

20 and 8 with 2.5 blocks per game is a nice season.
But Williams putting up 19 and 8 with 0.7 blocks per game is a better season?
And FWIW, KenPom had JJ ranked ahead of all but 4 players in the country.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
Rusty – probe deeper. Check other stats.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
Durant was never going to play in the area. If he did it would have been at UMD. Montrose Christian feeds a lot of their High D1 talent to UMD but Durants family wanted him away from DC metro area for college. (Very smart on their part)
Beaselys AAU coach got a $400,000 salary at K. State so we know why he and Wally Judge (another local DC guy who player AAU with Beasely) went to K. State.
Georgetown consistenly has top 10 recruiting classes and they consistently underachieve at the end of the season.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
um, that Ken Pom link didn’t have Kemba Walker in the Top 10.
lolz
interesting how only one other player is in the F4 (jones). it’s been a rough, rough year for Ken Pom
March 30th, 2011 at 3:18 PM
KP looked at all of ‘em and came to same conclusion.
Might have to do with JJ playing pretty outstanding (for a college kid) post D.
One of the few guys who handled Sullinger straight up, as I recall.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:18 PM
I should have said has had many top 10 recruiting classes. They do not have a top 10 recruiting class every year. However, with the talent they bring in they do underachieve.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:18 PM
the only one probably
March 30th, 2011 at 3:19 PM
he totally should have seen a 1 in 10,000 shot like VCU making the final four. what a dumbass.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
However, with the talent they bring in they do underachieve.
That’s true but if it makes you feel better they won’t be talented or good next year
March 30th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
I really like Gunner Stahl. The name alone gets him on my good side.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
As long as I don’t have to see Georgetown on the front page of the Post Sports section I will be very happy. I just can’t stand the local media kissing JTIII’s ass like he is an elite coach.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
Okay, dug a little deeper.
Williams shot better than Johnson, no doubt.
But considering Purdue played one of the toughest schedules in the country (opponent defense = 8) and didn’t get to compile a bunch of gaudy “stats” against weak Ds like DW (opponent defense = 41), I’d say his numbers stack up pretty nicely against DW.
Throw in playing better defense, and you have yourself an All-American.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
when I signed up I definitely was going mighty ducks name. It was either him or Charlie Conway
March 30th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
I should have said has had many top 10 recruiting classes.
FWIW, this doesn’t in any way refute my claim that they suck at recruiting. Austin Freeman, Jeff Green, Roy Hibbert and even, to some degree, Greg Monroe were very heavily pre-disposed towards going to Georgetown before anybody on the hill picked up a phone or sent them a letter
March 30th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
opponent defense = 8, not 8)
March 30th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Every time me and my buddy lose a game of beer pong, we say “Let’s go shake their hands” in an exaggerated accent.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
opponent defense = 8, not 8)
March 30th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
Fair enough. So you are saying that the regime in place right now is living off of Georgetowns reputation. I can see that.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Jajuan Johnson wasn’t even remotely a surprise All-American…I would have probably thrown Williams ahead of him, but he was at worst the consensus 6th player in the country. Devoting a post to this seems odd.
March 30th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
That Princeton offense is designed to help a team with not alot of talent compete against more talented teams, especially when you can spring that offense on people as a one shot thing. Their offense doesn’t fit their personnel year in and year out.
March 30th, 2011 at 5:18 PM
Kinda tired of hearing this excuse from the media about why Derrick Williams isn’t more highly publicized. What conference does BYU play in? Aren’t they in the same time zone as Arizona? Is there even a casual college basketball fan who doesn’t know everything there is to know about Jimmer? Why is he covered more than DW, who “plays on the wrong coast in the wrong conference.”
Its not geography or timezones, its lazy journalism.
March 30th, 2011 at 7:15 PM
If you watch Purdue play you know why he is 1st team. It’s not just $tat$.
