Critiquing the CBS Coverage of the NCAA Tournament (Barkley, Gus Johnson, Jim Nantz, Steve Kerr)

With 95% of the NCAA tournament complete, this seems as good a time as any to talk about the new CBS studio team of Greg Gumbel, Greg Anthony, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley. Before we get to them, how about a round of applause for the overall CBS production of the tournament?
On the first day, I had two TVs going and felt like I missed next-to-nothing. When I had to leave the house (the whole baby thing), I watched games easily on the Iphone.
Ratings were tremendous – the best since 1993. That probably has to do with the surfeit of close games and upsets. I mostly enjoyed the announcer pairings (Verne and Raftery, Gus Johnson and Len Elmore; and even Nantz and Kellogg are finding the right chemistry, as evidenced by the Ohio State-Kentucky classic).
I thought Steve Kerr was very good as an analyst. He sounded like someone who had done his work on college basketball (or, he’s really good at faking it). Reggie Miller did a terrific job calling out referees, but otherwise, I thought his first foray into college hoops left something to be desired. He struggled at times getting along with his counterparts in the three man booth (which actually made for funny, if awkward TV).
Gus Johnson made one bad blunder, but hey, these things happen (the haters loved it). Reggie Miller corrected him.
That mistake overshadowed this awesome call earlier in the game.
Onto the new studio team. The guy who was hurt most by the new quartet was Seth Davis. The longtime CBS analyst was marginalized by the wattage of Barkley and Smith. Davis was moved to the “B” set with Ernie Johnson and Steve Smith on either TNT or TBS. Davis usually has good insight and nuggets, since he inhales the season from November-through-March (not to mention talks to coaches who aren’t on the set), and some of that institutional knowledge was definitely lost with the new team.
All the new group did was make picks, which to the die-hard fan is worthless (except in the case of Barkley, which we’ll get to shortly). But the tournament mostly reels in casual basketball fans anyway, so maybe that was the goal?
Star power + picks = ratings/interest
vs
Analysts + analysis
TV!
Greg Gumbel - He’s a solid pro. Won’t impress anyone with style points. Not much into the jibber-jabber. He made one gigantic blunder, but was otherwise competent. I didn’t really like the way he’d predictably go down the line asking each analyst for their thoughts on the game. Too formulaic. Guess that’s what you have to do when there’s zero chemistry.
Greg Anthony – Of the three analysts, he definitely provided the most insight. I enjoyed the time he called out Kenny Smith for flip-flopping. I thought he was more valuable in the past sparring with Seth Davis.
Kenny Smith – I thought his observations were mundane and obvious and he never got the back-and-forth magic going with Barkley that they have on TNT. Maybe he was nervous to go at the players because they’re college kids. Fine. I get that. But why didn’t he get on Coach K at Duke for not using a timeout during the 19-2 run? Or Billy Donovan for his end-game struggles against Butler? Or Bill Self for yet another gag job in March? Well, he probably wasn’t even aware of Self’s Elite 8 struggles.
Charles Barkley – Much was made of his great predictions (he called the Big East struggles, Arizona beating Duke, Kentucky over North Carolina and probably a few other games I’ve forgotten). But like Smith, he wasn’t nearly as effective as he is on TNT. Either Barkley was sternly told by the CBS suits to clean up his act, or he felt bad going after players/coaches, because I thought he was pretty light on the criticism. And that’s a shame, because it’s what he does best.

I never really pay all that much attention to the announcer’s and who say’s what, but I kind of tried a little harder this year. the one thing that I noticed is that Gus Johnson is terribly over-rated. borderline obnoxious in my opinion.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Greg Gumble is 65? I want his plastic surgeon.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
I think a lot of the Barkley and Jet shortcomings are due to being on network television instead of cable. Even if they didn’t do it intentionally, they were holding back a bit because the audience is larger therefore mistakes, blunders or non-family friendly stuff is magnified.
Gus and Reggie standing on the final possession of regulation in UF v Butler made me laugh out loud.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
Welcome to the team, poopsmith.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
I find it rich that you’re marginalizing the whole “ratings” thing here, yet you beat the ratings drum any time you can as if it means something or supports something you want to believe (i.e. NBA Finals vs. Worlds Series ratings and how it pertains to the health of each sport).
March 29th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
Nantz. Legend.
/almost time
March 29th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
I think I’m over Gus Johnson’s announcing. I think he’s trying WAY too hard. He was fun to listen to because his excitement seemed natural. Now it just seems forced.
Raftery is and always will be the best color commentator in college basketball. Love love love him.
Thumbs down to Barkley and Smith… the least they could have done is studied up on the college players and maybe watched some highlights. Woefully unprepared as analysts of the college game.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
Can we please let Kevin Harlan call games on the 2nd weekend? kthxbi.
Oh, and Ian Engle is the most underrated guy there is right now.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:05 PM
Oh, and Ian Engle is the most underrated guy there is right now.
It’s Ian Eagle (which is an awesome name). I’ve always thought he paired well in the past with Jim Spanarkle.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
I am starting to like @NotGusJohnson on twitter more than the real deal.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
I want to struggle in the Elite 8 as much as Bill Self.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
ZOMG Fetch might be compelled to come comment on this again!
March 29th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
This x infinity + infinity.
I love when he busts out the “that’s a man’s jam” line.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
I like Steve Kerr … He’s good
March 29th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
He’s already been here once today.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
It was great hearing Marv Albert doing college games. I thought it took a while for the studio guys to get going but they were a lot of fun once they got comfortable. Loved Barkley calling out the Big East.
The Gus-Elmore-Miller trio was by far the worst of the tourney.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
He called Kentucky over OSU as well. I think he also convinced Kenny to do the same which led to Anthony’s flip-flopping comment.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
I don’t care who’s announcing the game as long as it’s not Gus Johnson. I give the tournament an A++++++++++ this year though for going to 4 networks the first weekend, even thought I was still perturbed that we have 4 networks and CBS STILL gave UNC and Duke to the entire nation. All I want is an alternative to Duke. Please give it to us.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
this.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
Dude… they did. On 3 different networks.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
That’s the third time I’ve done that. I’m the anti-Costanza.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
The tide has turned against Gus Johnson! The internet wins again!
March 29th, 2011 at 1:11 PM
And I missed it?? For shame
March 29th, 2011 at 1:11 PM
Agree, outside of baseball the announcers don’t matter to me at all. I’m surprised that so many people get worked up about it.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:11 PM

March 29th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Not really fair to lump Len Elmore in there since I don’t think he spoke throughout the duration of Butler-Florida…Reggie needed to shut the fuck up already
Really sucked getting two games that came down to the wire
March 29th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
I thought he sounded really phlegmy during the game on Sunday.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
Hello friends. And on a related note, has anybody played the new Tiger Woods yet?
March 29th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
I gotta disagree. The announcers can definitely add to the enjoyment of a broadcast. Obviously they matter most in radio. My main gripe with Gus has been that he takes away from the game by trying to be the star of the show.
He’s like the Joey Crawford of announcers. He wants it to be about him, not the game.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:14 PM

Gus is nice to have around in a close game like Saturday, it’s just the other 35 minutes of a game where he’s nothing special…still though to have an announcer alter your viewing habits is silly
March 29th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
God damn it. Stop ruining threads with your stupid video game discussions!
March 29th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
It sounded to me like he lost his voice

Same here…it will be delivered today.
Being at work sucks.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Or Bill Self for yet another gag job in March?
UGHHHHHH
March 29th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
You shut your mouth when you’re talking to me
March 29th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Liar
March 29th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
I know, right? Didn’t hear anything about Jim Boeheim either…guess he took the smart way out again by not getting anywhere near the Elite 8, let this be a lesson to you Bill
March 29th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
I kicked some major ass on the MJ Experience on Wii this weekend after my friend showed me I was holding the remote incorrectly. Got 3 stars on Smooth Criminal.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
that’s rich seeing as this place has become a giant hockake every day.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Fetch doesn’t come here to call out people when he disagrees with them. Instead he takes to Twitter and makes sweeping, derogatory generalizations about commenters.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
This is fact and confirmed by Elton John and UPS.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
I want a serious answer to why Jamie Dixon never gets brought up in the choking conversation. When was the last time his Pitt team lived up to the hype?
March 29th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
If you still think he’s not Brad Clooney, I can’t help you.
You just wait for the Bertuzzi post. It’s gonna get nasty in that thread today.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
same reason oregon doesn’t get brought up in the choking convo in CFB…new money gets a pass these days.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
I would say that part of the problem for Jet and Chuck comes from the lack of contact they’ve had with these kids and coaches. They know the NBA because they follow it and get to know the players, the coaches and the environment of it. But when’s the last time Kenny talked to Jim Calhoun? Has Chuck spent time dissecting Ohio State or Kansas through the years?
The NBA is, by and large, very static. A few players leave every year and a new crop come in. You get time to get to know players. College ball has a far greater turnover rate and teams that were great last year may be mediocre this year just by losing 1 underclassman.
You can’t accumulate knowledge the same way.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
Because not even Jamie Dixon gives a shit about Pitt athletics…closest they came to the promised land was that epic regional final against Villanova that was lost at the buzzer, otherwise they’ve been a disappointment going back to Ben Howland
March 29th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Could it be as simple as no one gives a shit about Pitt?
March 29th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
bullshit. Jamie Dixon has been the Pitt head coach since 03. Oregon has only been good enough to be considered chokers for 2 seasons.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Well why the fuck has this never been mentioned?
March 29th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
not really…they were no. 2 in the country in 2007 before dennis dixon got hurt and they went to straight shit*.
*well…technically, since they’re in the pac-10 they were already straight shit, but you get the point.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Regardless of who they decided to bring on for extra flair, Seth Davis should always be on the “A” set. Terrible decision.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Well why the fuck has this never been mentioned?
March 29th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
He gets its.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Well the selection committee gives a shit about them. They haven’t been seeded lower than 5 since 2006. They’ve only made it past the Sweet 16 once in the entire time Dixon has coached.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
The wear and tear of the beastly Big East makes for a more understanding, reasonable media when they flop.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
Why is Vitale never called out for his recurring clown acts? He brings no valuable insight to to any game he announces or “analyzes”. Guy’s a fucking joke.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
He’s probably still “waiting for someone to tally up the Syracuse gags in the tourney (ie seed, underdog, etc)
Self has more in 8 years than Boeheim has in 30.”
As soon as Smith reads the comments I’m sure we won’t hear anything more about it.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
This has been well known for years, why waste your breath on it?

March 29th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
You must not have been looking hard enough…I mean it was on this blog where it was openly questioned whether Dick Vitale smelled like piss because to quote the commenter: “He looks like he smells like piss”
March 29th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Agree. I may not agree with Davis’ analysis all the time but at least he knows stuff about college basketball and its players.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
The play that summed up the entire Jamie Dixon coaching career at Pitt was getting a shot clock violation with 50 seconds (approx) to play agaisnt Butler. It was a microcausm of his tenure. Chance to win, has the horses on the floor to do it, then a collasal mistake. It also paralled nicely with Brad Stevens drawing up a layup that scored within 5-8 seconds the following possession.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
dirt showed up this morn. i love raftery (and hubie). ian eagle is notworthy because he pronounces his first name is the most homo way possible of the two ways you could pronounce it

March 29th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
God damn it. Stop ruining threads with your stupid video game discussions!
But how are we to know who got the best stats in Call of Duty?
March 29th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Anyone else noticing that Nantz has been punching up his calls down the stretch, it’s as if he knows that Gus is breathing down his neck.
Barkley has gotten many of his picks right, but come on, he said UK would beat OSU b/c of their depth. Love Barkley, but get him off the NCAA set.
Ian Eagle does a great job. Really grown on me over the years.
And anyone miss Craig Bolerjack? Didn’t think so.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:32 PM

March 29th, 2011 at 1:33 PM

March 29th, 2011 at 1:35 PM
See, I want to know why he let his guys even try for the rebound after whats-his-name made the first basket to tie the game. There was no way Butler could do anything other than send it to overtime!
March 29th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
There’s a theory abounding that the Pitt player didn’t know what the score was an intentionally fouled Howard…wouldn’t put it past him
March 29th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
As soon as TBL gives us a twice weekly videogame thread, then we’ll stop tj’ing the threads with videogame talk, SG.
Don’t care about basketball announcers, baseball is important.
Fuck Hawk.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
All I know is I’ll miss seeing Pitt’s McGhee in the tournament. I was enjoying making predator clicking sounds every time they had close ups of him.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
Needs more Pam Ward
Not really
March 29th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
That reminds me, where’s our Bertuzzi post? Ah, fuck it.

See, I want to know why he let his guys even try for the rebound after whats-his-name made the first basket to tie the game. There was no way Butler could do anything other than send it to overtime!
20/20 hindsight says you take everyone off and hope Brown makes the 2nd foul shot — at the time I would imagine Dixon would think that the guys on the block could keep the play alive and get a putback. We all know how that ended up.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:43 PM
nothing needs more pam ward (draw map backwards)
the pitt guy fouled so hard, holding the guys’ arms down, i think butters’ theory makes sense. he wasn’t going for the ball, he wanted the wallet
March 29th, 2011 at 1:50 PM
Unfortunately, the one thing I will remember about announcing in this year’s tourney was how scary Lesley Visser looked at times.
March 29th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
Way to clear out a room, vez
March 29th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
i felt going after Visser would have been too harsh. but yes, I know what you’re talking about

cj, i’m very sensitive. you really mean it?
i’m going to change my name to a different baseball term

March 29th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
I should qualify #87 with Rob Dibble no longer being employed and Hawk Harrelson being my #1 pick in the 2011 dead pool.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
The fossil. He’s good for at least one epic screw-up a game that is laugh inducing. Such as calling the St Louis Rams the St Louis Browns, or referring to the Atl Hawks as St Louis, or calling the Falcons the Eagles.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Here’s the 3-2 pitch…ball 4! STRIKE 3!!!
He actually did this in the top of the 8th of a one run Sox game…the umpire never even hesitated on the punchout to cause the confusion
March 29th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Well if we’re going to be criticizing the announcers’ looks now, start with Verne Lundquist.
/Seth Davis is pretty

March 29th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
Wrong. We were force fed on Sunday, but they had the other 6 games on in the span of about 3 hours, 3 to a network.
No. What really would have sucked was if Duke won by 27 and we were forced to watch it.

I don’t care if he mispronounces a name, him and raftery are fun to listen to.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
I really like the format of the Tourney coverage this year and hope it continues this way into the future.
While Seth Davis was relegated to the Turner studio, I thought that he, EJ/Matt Winer, Steve Smith and the guest coach were really good and were much better to watch when they hosted the “Inside the Madness” wrap up show than the CBS team.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
The Mets SNY team of Hernandez, Darling, and Cohen is one of the better ones in the business.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
Well if we’re going to be criticizing the announcers’ looks now, start with Verne Lundquist.
“Punctuation point!”
March 29th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Especially when you consider they’re still hungover from the night before and spend the halftime debating which bar to close down after the game

Definitely in your size range, CJ. Met the guy a few times, he knows my brother. He’s just a widdle guy.

March 29th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
Barkley is awful. Why do people think he is good? I can barely understand him and he doesn’t analyze college games for a living.
Was he brought in for shock value? Kenny Smith sucks too. Those guys aren’t funny. Their humor is for dumb people… which I guess is the mass audience they are trying to get.
Thank you.
March 29th, 2011 at 2:12 PM

March 29th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
Why bring Barkley & Jet into at all? They are NBA guys and the best – leave them there. The ball is still round but the college game is so much different. Kenny Smith was especially out of place; Barkley saved himself with the Big East grease fire. Same with Marv Albert – “from downtown” is an NBA line. Yess.
March 29th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Whoever said baseball announcers do not matter has obviously not heard John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on Yankees radio. Beyond awful.
March 29th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Let me just lately throw in my vote for Raftery, who is so the best it’s not even funny. I love the Jay Bilas tweets about him on occasion.
March 29th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
I saw an article on Raftery a few months ago. He puts together 4 or 5 pages of comprehensive notes for every game he broadcasts during the season. Bill is so thorough and knowledgeable it’s not even funny.
March 29th, 2011 at 5:15 PM
In regards to the Chuckster and The Jet, this whole thing just shows how vital Ernie Johnson is to their show. They’re doing a good job, but the excitement they bring is lacking. That could have as much to do with broadcasting on the grandparent network than anything else.
March 29th, 2011 at 10:38 PM
I still wouldn’t call Gus’ call in the BYU game a flub. If you are the BYU coach and you know your team is out of gas, why not foul, force FL to the line and then have the ball with a chance to win in regulation? As was shown in OT, they didn’t have the legs to compete at that point.
