If Jared Sullinger Stays, Ohio State Probably Opens the 2011-2012 College Basketball Season at No. 1
Jared Sullinger says he’s returning to Ohio State for his sophomore year. Considering Sullinger is a projected Top 10 pick in the NBA draft, this decision seems highly unlikely. He’s just another kid who suffered a difficult, emotional, NCAA Tournament loss and he’ll change his mind in a few weeks when the dollar signs become more real, right?
Here are some basketball reasons Sullinger might return for his sophomore season: [UPDATE: Sullinger's dad says to "etch it in stone" his son will return to Ohio State.]
Ohio State will be really, really good next year. If Sullinger returns, they’ll definitely open in the season in the Top 5. If Sullinger and junior William Buford stay, they probably open at No. 1.
First, the losses: they’ll graduate a top reserve (Lauderdale), their best wing defender (Lighty), and their best shooter (Diebler, the best 3-point shooter in Big Ten history).
It’s safe to assume freshman Deshaun Thomas, who played limited minutes but was impressive occasionally on offense, will replace Lighty. Aaron Craft, who could be the best defensive guard in the country, will start at point. If Buford stays (2-for-16, worst game of the season against Kentucky), then they only need to find one more starter.
Fortunately, the incoming freshman class is pretty strong, as it features three players 6-foot-8 or bigger.
Sullinger and all other underclassmen have until April 24 to make up their mind about the NBA, but the guess here is that if Sullinger and Buford stay, and all the other talented freshman in the country go to the NBA as expected (Harrison Barnes, Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones, Perry Jones, Kyrie Irving, Tobias Harris, Tristian Thompson, Josh Selby, etc), Ohio State will open the preseason rankings at No. 1.
The Big Ten will be significantly rebuilding next year, and the Buckeyes will dominate the league again:
* Michigan, a young team on the rise, is probably the 2nd best team in the league, but how close it’ll be to Ohio State depends on if Darius Morris returns to opts for the NBA.
* Illinois loses three key seniors (McCamey, Tisdale, Davis), but has a nice young nucleus (Paul, Richardson, Richmond). McCamey’s loss could be some addition by subtraction based on the way his senior season went. I think the Illini will be a Top 5 team in the league.
* Michigan State loses its starting backcourt (Lucas, Summers), but will still be in the top five in the league assuming Keith Appling takes over the team and Green and Roe provide leadership.
* Wisconsin loses three pivotal seniors and will have to rebuild around explosive guard Jordan Taylor (who struggled in his final two games – 8-35- against K-State and Butler).
* Purdue loses its two best players (JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore) from a 26-8, 14-4 team. They won’t be a Top 25 team.

not a bad start to replacing 36 ppg that graduates … but I’m thinking 21-9-ish, probably a 7-8-9 NCAA seed?

Rumor: Matt Painter targeted by Missouri to be next head coach.

What does it matter. 5 and a half months of regular season (let’s be honest, it’s the longest preseason in sports) and none of it matters till I see whether or not OSU gets placed in an easy region or not. That’s all that matters in this stupid fluky tournament.

Every year the Badgers lose guys and the doomsday predictions start but then they plug in new guys, win their 23-27 games finishing in the top-4 of the B1G and then flame out in the Tournament after a win or two…lather, rinse, repeat

I wonder if the upcoming NBA labor fight is going to make more 1-and-done college players consider staying for another year. They can play and improve their game or sit and wait for things to get settled.

Let me get out a violin to accompanying your whining about OSU losing in the “stupid, fluky tournament.”

Oh do I sound a little bit bitter? Not that I would have wanted Kansas’ region or anything. I hate my life

As a Hoya fan looking for some post-season success, I guess I do. A little bit?

Bueller: No one cares.
OSU will make it to the sweet 16 thanks to a Charmin soft schedule and the second most over-rated conference, the Big 11+1. Of course, OSU will have to, um, battle, um Nebraska.

I would like them to upgrade the schedule, but they did destroy Florida on the road and they beat FSU on the road. Plus, they beat Morehead St and Oakland, two other tourney teams, not to mention the 6 other tourney teams from the Big Ten.

Still bummed about the loss. This would have never happened if college basketball had a BCS system! (half-joking)
Seriously though, Kansas is going to go through #16, #9, #12, #11 and #8 seeds to get the the national Championship Game! That’s earning it?
Also, wasn’t it like yesterday when you said that OSU would be Top 16 if Sullinger returned? I’m confused.
And for some time now, the line from the Sullinger family has been that he will stay at OSU until he wins a title. It really isn’t all that shocking that he has decided to stay.

Not sure how’ll they be next year but this year Nebraska was feisty in the Big 12. It shall be interesting to see how their game translates to big 10 conference play

I don’t know why, but this year finally made me sick of this. I’d be fine with a bad year here and there if we finally made some tournament runs. We’re underperforming right now.

You guys should lobby for an NIT berth. Those home games at Kohl would guarantee a trip to MSG year after year. You guys are just a different team at home.

Kentucky likely keeps Knight and Lamb, along with Miller and Liggins. Add to that Davis, Gilchrist and Teague. That is your number 1 team next year. In fact, Jones might even stay at this point.
