Jim Tressel Forwarded the Terrelle Pryor Emails, But Neglected to Tell His Bosses
Jim Tressel: Could the Ohio State coach could have bungled this Memorabilia Scandal situation any worse? More damning details seem to trickle out with each week, and today, the Columbus Dispatch unearthed this – when Tressel received the emails, he forwarded them to Terrelle Pryor’s “mentor” in hopes he would do something. So yeah, Tressel got caught in another lie. Ty Duffy and I agree – OSU won’t fire Tressel now, but they’ll gently shove him out after this season, and Urban Meyer will take over in 2012. [Dispatch]

cool.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Is this Meyer to OSU thing a meme I missed? Why would Urban leave Florida, uproot his family, and take a job in Ohio?
March 25th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Wait, whats the new lie?
March 25th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Because speculation is king, if Meyer doesn’t take it who would be next in line?
March 25th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Why would Urban leave Florida, uproot his family, and take a job in Ohio?
$$$$
March 25th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
he has OSU ties and has language in contracts saying that was one of the schools he could leave utah for.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Ha. You make it sound like tOSU fans would be upset about this.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Anyone got 700k?

Is this Meyer to OSU thing a meme I missed? Why would Urban leave Florida, uproot his family, and take a job in Ohio?
He’s already commuting to ESPN’s studios in Bristol on occasion. So a move for his whole family would probably not be that big of a deal.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Bob Stoops, naturally.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
$$$$
He was one of the highest paid coaches when he was at Florida, wasn’t he? And he still left. He doesn’t need money. The $$$ thing is what you use as rationale for a guy at a very successful smaller program moving onto a less successful bigger one. Meyer already was in the big time, and he didn’t like it/got tired of it whether it was because of health reasons or otherwise.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
I think basically it’s that his defense for not reporting it initially was trying to protect the confidentiality of the lawyer who sent it to him (or someone else), but he did not in fact keep the emails private (sending it to Pryor’s guy).
March 25th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
He’s already commuting to ESPN’s studios in Bristol on occasion. So a move for his whole family would probably not be that big of a deal.
Commuting a few weeks a year to Bristol ain’t in the same league as moving from Florida to Columbus.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
May be a technicality here, but when asked about whether he forwarded the e-mails, he was about to answer when Gene Smith stepped in. Now was he forthcoming? No, but did he lie? No.
I honestly believe how big this has got. If Tressel was out there brokering deals for his players or recruits, then I could understand the national outrage. But all this over not forwarding an email to compliance? Seems like the least of college football’s worries.
Do I think the guy is a saint? No. But you can’t convince me he’s bad for college football.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Yeah, I read this and was like… this is bad?
March 25th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Urban will be going through a messy divorce in 2012 so I don’t think he’s going to be coaching football.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
he said he did nothing with the email at the press conference.
lie.
he forwarded them.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
I sheepishly agree. Another B1G school has 12 players with medical conditions (that eventually turned out to be nothing) and a player running a drug house while selling to teammates yet KF is going to be roaming the sidelines on September 3rd.
Don’t like sticking up for Ohio State but they got taken to task over something pretty frivolous. Against the rules, but frivolous nonetheless.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
He was one of the highest paid coaches when he was at Florida, wasn’t he? And he still left. He doesn’t need money.
He’ll get the itch to coach again and as Spencer mentioned he has ties to OSU. Also, OSU is one of the institutions that will be able to meet his asking price.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
You don’t lie or attempt to mislead the NCAA in any way. It’s been a big deal historically and is now.
Of course!
March 25th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Sounds like you didn’t read the piece you linked:
“But Tressel also nodded his head and said “um-hmm” when asked whether he had forwarded the emails to anyone.
Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith quickly intervened to prevent Tressel from answering that question ”
Was he forthright? No, did he lie? No.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
he has OSU ties and has language in contracts saying that was one of the schools he could leave utah for.
dont think he’s in utah anymore. that language was probably in there assure he could take an opportunity to coach a top program. he’s done that now.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
he lied to you, but who the fuck are you? let the NCAA deal with it and leave the baseless speculation at home.
March 25th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
The cover up is worse than the crime, as is so often the case.
Still, Tressel is a dirty, filthy hoar and liar.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Another B1G school has 12 players with medical conditions (that eventually turned out to be nothing) and a player running a drug house while selling to teammates yet KF is going to be roaming the sidelines
Yeah, see? They don’t even have a good coach and they’re sticking by their man
March 25th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Because speculation is king, if Meyer doesn’t take it who would be next in line?
Brian Kelly once Notre Dame fires him over the Declan Sullivan scandal.
Oh wait. They’re not firing him. That’d only be the responsible thing to do.
So let’s say…Les Miles?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
He was misleading, yes. He didn’t lie to them. Wonder if there’s a difference there for the NCAA. Also, OSU self-reported literally everything here. I also wonder how much of a difference there is there with the NCAA.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
You don’t lie or attempt to mislead the NCAA in any way. It’s been a big deal historically and is now.
yeah… I agree the violation were dumb/frivolous, but lying made it a whole lot worse. NCAA suspended Dez Bryant almost an entire year for lying over something that would have only been a secondary violation, if I recall correctly.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
This is the 2nd time he has lied to the NCAA. Youngstown violations still count.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
dont think he’s in utah anymore. that language was probably in there assure he could take an opportunity to coach a top program. he’s done that now.
yep.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
again, he has OSU ties.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
again, he has OSU ties.
out of curiousity, what are they?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
again, he has OSU ties.
What does that even mean? Is he banging the deans daughter?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Interesting how ND is so quick to act when a player gets a DUI yet when a staff member dies it takes 3 weeks to issue a statement.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Just like with Barry Bonds, the covering up and lying was much worse than the original infraction.

Stoops to ND > Meyer to OSU
March 25th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Sigh.
Jersey, what’s your take on the Sullivan situation? Do you put as much blame on Kelly as most seem to?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
lotta ND hate up in here. Keep up the good work.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
got his coaching career started there and got his masters from OSU.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Or if a player gets all rapey and the girl later kills herself just try your best to keep it all on the hush-hush
March 25th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
I doubt the NCAA didn’t already know this…considering they have been investigating this since January.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Realistically speaking, I don’t think anyone is picturing beyond Urban Meyer as Sweater Vest’s successor. It’s almost as certain as Urban Meyer leaving Utah for Florida.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
…and hire D.J. Durkin as D-coordinator.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
wasn’t Charlie Batch Pryor’s mentor? Please tell me he is involved in this mess.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
got his coaching career started there and got his masters from OSU
pretty substantial, but still cant see him going there. whats the upside considering he left a better program (recently)?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Commuting a few weeks a year to Bristol ain’t in the same league as moving from Florida to Columbus.
I agree, but my point was that their only connection with Florida now seems to be that they’ve lived there in the past. I don’t think uprooting would be as difficult as imagined in this case. They’ve probably already been thinking it. After all I can’t imagine Urban’s wife believes that he is ‘retired’ now any more than the rest of us do.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
I hate everything about it. I hate that a kid died. I hate that I don’t know what I should say about it. But I particularly hate everyone bringing it up over and over again. The direct blame is with the football manager and the video people. But still, negligence was had by the coaches, especially considering the winds. I don’t know. I’m going to stop talking about this.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Later fellas.

March 25th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Also how did osu “bungle” any of this. One they found out the violation (both tress and the players) they immediately notified the NCAA. The university has been forthcoming during the whole process.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
i mean, id love to continue this discourse, but you’re just going to hate on OSU more and more so why should i bother?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
This is just all too awesome…
BTW – Rich Rodreguez is available and Bill Martin is available to take over as AD.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
This is a joke, right?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Or the guy that didn’t move practice indoors. Remember Tressel did, and he actually cited his cameraguy’s life. Yet somehow Tressel is awful for college football and Kelly is fine.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
don’t you have your own problems to focus on? like not looking like a fucking MACrifice of a football team?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
BTW – Rich Rodreguez is available
For what? Birthday parties? Bat mitzvahs? As a clown that can get pelted with pies?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Wouldn’t go down this road…
I don’t blame Kelly for the record. He certainly could have prevented it, but responsibilities are delegated for a reason. There’s no one person to blame for a kid dying. Not addressing it in a timely fashion is the only thing I think people can take issue with.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Better in what sense? Osu athletic budget is if not number 1 one of the highest in the country. If you mean recent crystal footballs maybe but osu has been a pretty regular top 10 program for a while now.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
TBL roots for ND, you’d have to wait for Duffy to pen something about their shady program…only getting “The Irish Are a BCS Team” posts from the EIC
March 25th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
March 25th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
I’d agree that the university has been forthcoming. The coach, however, has not been. That’s the troubling part. It was a small lie, and one that in the grand scheme of things, is not egregious. But, once out in the open, Tressel really screwed up by not admitting what he had. That’s just plain dumb. It goes to show that everyone can make mistakes.
The problem now is that the sheer number of “go-getter investigative reporters” that will try to unearth more on OSU. There is ALWAYS something to find if you look hard enough. There is stuff to find at Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, Rice, UConn, etc…
This gets worse as more comes into the open, but it doesn’t mean that the school didn’t appropriately handle the issues once they came to light.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Or the guy that didn’t move practice indoors. Remember Tressel did, and he actually cited his cameraguy’s life. Yet somehow Tressel is awful for college football and Kelly is fine.
And then he and the university have been involved in covering it up and lying to OSHA.
See, I can see the mistakes having been made, the university and Kelly being contrite and admitting their flaws. But that seems to be beyond them. And that’s what is unforgivable.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Am I the only one that thought “Ty Duffy and I agree” was a hilarious interjection?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
You disagree with anything there chris? The school self reported everything immediately. Not talking about tress, the university did what they had to right away.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
he means the program that went 8-5, lost to mississippi state and went to the outback bowl is better.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
mean, id love to continue this discourse, but you’re just going to hate on OSU more and more so why should i bother?
dont bother. i am not trying to bash osu, but i dont expect you to realize that.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
I guess we’re gonna ignore the half dozen ‘Kelly should be fired’ Duffy posts then.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Dont disagree Wally…tbl said Ohio state has screwed this up; they did what they could, tress made the mistakes, wasn’t forthcoming
March 25th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
he means the program that went 8-5, lost to mississippi state and went to the outback bowl is better.
or more accurately, i meant a program that has one multiple BCS titles in the past 10 years, recruits that are better and an easy sell geographically. but mostly 8-5. nerds.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
I did.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
This sums this whole incident up for me. I mean, THIS is the hill the NCAA is planting their disciplinary flag on? Really?
I hope we remember how stupid this is going to look when they are taking away Cecil Newton’s Heisman Trophy away in four years.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
meh…the top handful of programs (texas, florida, bama, osu, not usc) are all pretty much the same thing. license to print money, pick of recruits from around the country, visability…it’s not like he’d be going to somewhere like iowa.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
i cant multitask/spell for shit.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
fuck me. quote fail.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
meh…the top handful of programs (texas, florida, bama, osu, not usc) are all pretty much the same thing. license to print money, pick of recruits from around the country, visability…it’s not like he’d be going to somewhere like iowa.
true. i just dont see why you would leave florida for a place that is even more pressure packed.
BTW- i dont hate osu, more the conference they come from. just a tingling dislike.
March 25th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Lets revisit this after NCAA sanctions are imposed in Columbus. After a couple of years of reduced scholarships, mass transfers and no Bowl Games, how will the OSU program look?
March 25th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Ted Sarniak = Ed Martin
March 25th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
probably pretty similar. what are these mass transfers you’re talking about? it’s not like they’d run off a 5-star QB and a sophomore all-big ten lineman or anything…
March 25th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Damn. SC with some BOOM
March 25th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
No, they will not run them off. But if the sanctions are bad enough, the kids will leave to play someplace where they can showcase their talent in a Bowl Game.
March 25th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Kelly made a mistake, a terrible mistake but still a mistake.
Tressel knowingly flaunted NCAA regulations, AGAIN, and has still yet to even say he was wrong. The NCAA rightfully took a lot of heat when they let the Tat5 play in the Sugar Bowl and now we find out that Tressel was playing them as a fool the entire time. Thats why he wont get any leniency. NCAA will suspend him for all of 2011 and he’ll likely be fired.
March 25th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Again I ask, who would you rather have coaching your kids? The one whose mistake cost the life of a program member, or the one who protected his kids at every step of the way. Be honest.
March 25th, 2011 at 1:32 PM
I think the University is rather happy to have a reason to get Tressel out and move in new blood. Meyer has always wanted this job and OSU has always wanted Urban. Make this happen baby Jesus.
March 25th, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Very valid point, Cursed. But fans personally, especially at this University, care about national championships. This is not Michigan where rebuilding is an option, eventually losing to SEC teams becomes really old, really fast. Wins mean more over character and Jim Tressel knows that as well. Who better than Urban Meyer if you’re going to break the rules anyway?
March 25th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Seriously? You guys are unbelievable. Do you call setting them up with free cars “providing them with safe reliable transportation to class?”
I dont know what this is supposed to mean, other than it being a sorry attempt to deflect criticism onto an unrelated party.
March 25th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
Why are you putting that on Tressel? Seems like you’re assigning blame b/c you don’t like the guy. We get it.
So one person tells me it’s a valid point, and you (predictably) doesn’t answer and still rips me. Again, we get it.
March 25th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
A fellow OSU fan agrees Tressel is a saint sent to earth to vanquish Michigan, no way!
Kelly made a mistake, Tressel willingly and knowingly covered up offenses (again). I’m sorry you cant see the difference. The two are unrelated.
