TSN2′s Preemption of March Madness For Women’s Curling Confirmed By A Horrified Bachelor Party
Yesterday Twitter tipped us off about Canada’s TSN2 switching from the NCAA Tournament’s late games to show women’s curling. Last night, we got confirmation from a reader who was in Canada for a bachelor party. After the jump, allow Ryan to share his harrowing tale.
This is very, very true. Myself and six other (Americans) made it up to Windsor for a long weekend in part to celebrate a Bachelor party, but also due to March Madness. We were all watching (and betting) on the games in the Legend’s Bar/Restaurant at Caesar’s Windsor. They cut to a Curling match and the place came unglued. It did, however, turn into sarcastic cheering and people trying to cash in fake Curling betting tickets. All in all it was pretty humorous. They had the American CBS feed, but refused to use it. It was TSN or nada. The Curling fiasco was right on par with TSN profiling the FIVE Canadian basketball players in the Tournament during a pre-game segment they called “Canadian Content.”
Personally, I think its classy that he didn’t include details about the maple syrup shots and strippers dressed like female mounties. It kind of reminds me of the Atlantic City bachelor party I attended where we all ended up watching the USA-Canada Board Battle slow-pitch softball game on a hung over Saturday afternoon. Of course, its not like ESPN preempted a CFL playoff game to show softball. Wacky Canadians.

The Curling fiasco was right on par with TSN profiling the FIVE Canadian basketball players in the Tournament during a pre-game segment they called “Canadian Content.”
Not sure why profiling homegrown players in a fiasco. There were more than FIVE Canadians in the tourney by the way.

Sports Centre: 2 hours of hockey and curling.
Scary.

You know what was a great movie? Canadian Bacon.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Hells yes. I love how that movie opens with them fishing for bodies next to Niagara Falls, and that they get a bonus or something for bringing them in.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:17 PM
If that was their biggest concern, it was likely the lamest bachelor party ever.
/confirmed by me

I think this is one of the funniest movies ever made. John Candy at his best.

Or when their friend is being held at “the capital” of Canada, and they all think it’s Toronto, and they bust into the Mounty’s little headquarters:
Boomer: The capital, Toronto.
Mounty: No, the capital of Canada is Ottawa.
Boomer: Yeah, right. Do we look that stupid? Ottawa!
Roy Boy: Nice try, Dudley

Is Canadian Bacon on NetFlix…
Fuck yes, it’s instant stream! I’m most certainly going to watch this tonight.

Anyone ever get a chance to watch “Corner Gas”, the top-rated comedy in Canada? (Was on WGN for a few months)
It was a… strange… show…
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:27 PM
As much as I like the tournament, I’m almost certain that curling RATINGS! are much, much higher here.
/not confirmed by me

yeah, i was gonna say they probably missed all the other great shit happening they should have been doing instead of watching march madness. last time i was in montreal for a bachelor party, we made sure to get cuban cigars and drink whiskey on one stop before hitting up several strip clubs.
although, the strippers did keep asking us if we were in town for the hockey game…strange.

When you said this I instantly thought of Kids in The Hall. Loved that show.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:29 PM
KITH was great but for my money Trailer Park Boys is the greatest Canadian comedy series
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Canadian Bacon is instant streaming. Nice, I’ll add that ever growing instant queue . +1 for the intel.

Brent Butt, legend.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:30 PM
the top-rated comedy in Canada?
It still has to be Degrassi Jr. High.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Can’t talk Canadian comedy without Red Green Show.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:31 PM
@Geeezeus Oilers are in town tonight… I’m not going, but if the Preds can avoid losing to a last place team again, they’ll start to solidify a playoff spot!
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:34 PM
WWOS, Oilers are dressing a lineup that includes 7 guys that played at least 15 games in the minors this year. Should be 2 points for the Preds.
I’ve been on the Preds bandwagon all season, they’re the team I’m rooting for once the playoffs begin.

Calling DeGrassi a comedy is like calling Dark Knight a heist movie. That show dealt with some heavy content. Let us never forget that Wheels almost got diddled by the old guy on the way to Port Hope!

Ha! It was the only Canadien show that was on when I was a kid. I think it was on PBS.

I’d agree, but they blew a game to them a few weeks ago, right after a thrilling victory over Detroit (in a game that Vince Gill and Alice Cooper both performed at randomly).
The Bruins are so badly marketed, I’ve ignored pro hockey most my life for college hockey, but since UNH is the hockey version of Pitt basketball, I’ve begin to really get into the Preds the last few years, some really good likable players in Shea Weber and Pekka Rinne (who is fantastic to go watch) and a local kid Geoffrion.

Never seen this. Don’t Canadians consider The Red Green Show the funniest thing ever made?

And Spike’s teenage pregancy!

I always assumed the Red Green Show was from the UP of Michigan

I never liked Harold. KITH and Trailer Park Boys are much better.
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Damn, Drake…
March 22nd, 2011 at 12:45 PM
You’re sadly misinformed. Red Green was fluff for old people to laugh at. You need to get up on some KITH and SCTV for vintage Canadian comedy.
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:22 PM
You haven’t lived until you’ve seen the great earlier 1980′s Canadian show The Littlest Hobo
A German Shephard that roams from town to town solving crimes, pulling kids from fires, rescuing hostages.
It’s like Must See Hoser TV
March 22nd, 2011 at 1:24 PM
PS, nothing makes me crazier than when Blue Jays games used to be on CTV and if they ran late I had to wait for some faggy ball game to end before I could watch W5

FYI – generally speaking, the Canadian viewing public doesn’t give a rat’s patootie about American college basketball (or any other American college sport for that matter) jusst as the Canadian viewing public outside of the Toronto area give a rat’s patootie about the NBA. Basketball is not a big sport in Canada. Garland Green, you are correct – curling ratings in Canada are a LOT higher than basketball ratings.
And how can anyone talk about Canadian comedy and not mention SCTV!!
March 24th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
A couple of typos in that post – I meant to say “just as the Canadian view public outside fo the Toronto areas does not give a rat’s patootie about the NBA”.
