Matt Cooke’s Cheap Shot on Ryan McDonagh Wasn’t Surprising. Here’s His Highlight Reel of Cheap Shots
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke faces a likely suspension for an elbow to the head on Rangers’ defenseman Ryan McDonagh. It’s hard to believe the NHL didn’t see this one coming. He does have a record of this sort of thing. A few choice selections from his “highlight reel” after the jump.
Here is Cooke’s knee-on-knee cheap shot on Ovechkin in February.
Here is Cooke hitting Fedor Tyutin from behind, also in February.
Here is Cooke hitting Keith Yandle’s head shortly before Christmas.
Here is Cooke knocking out the Bruins’ Marc Savard last March.
Here is another knee-on-knee hit from Cooke in May 2009
Here is Cooke kicking Chris Osgood in the head during the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals.
Cooke was suspended for this hit on the Rangers’ Artem Anisimov in November, 2009.

What a guy. League needs to finally make an example out of someone, he’s the perfect choice.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:04 PM
Fuck Matt Cooke.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Sad fact is that Cooke has only been suspended for a total of 10 games to date (not including the hit on McDonagh yesterday).
Sounds like even the Penguins have given him an ultimatum this time around, though I fail to see what the consequences will be internally.

Seems Mario’s mouth wrote a check this guy won’t allow him to cash. Season ending suspension. Be done with him. It’s time to take this guy out of the NHL before more guy’s lose their seasons and some of them, in the case of Savard, their livelihoods.
I wonder how sincere Mario was when this conversation took place.

I saw on twitter that Lemieux told him to change his style, or else. Pisses me off he does this shit because he does have hockey skills. He’s good for 15 goals a year, and is a very good penalty killer. I blame the missing tooth.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:13 PM
I saw on twitter that Lemieux told him to change his style, or else.
Or else what though?
He’s owed $1.8M for each of the next two seasons and has a modified no-trade clause. Buying him out this summer costs them 2/3′s of the $3.6M remaining, and they don’t have cap space to burn. He’s got a one way deal so they pay him the full amount if he goes to the minors as well.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:13 PM
When you’re not penalized other than a 2 minute minor for it in most cases, there’s no reason for him to stop. Not until they take something valuable away like significant salary or his postseason will it be enough of a shock to the system to make him stop.
I don’t make a habit of wishing injuries on players (at least ones that don’t do the belt as a celebration) but if someone brown brained this guy, I’d welcome it.

I hear the Peoria Chiefs are looking for some help in the offseason.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:15 PM
He wouldn’t even clear waivers. Someone would snatch him before he got to the AHL.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:18 PM
I buy it. Making the boss look bad is rarely a good career move and Cooke has done just that with these shenanigans.
/he should get 10 games
March 21st, 2011 at 1:18 PM
Cooke is second on my list of players that need to be banished from the NHL. First? Marian Hossa!
March 21st, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Paul Holmgren would pick him and put him on a line with Dan Carcillo.
At that point, the hell mouth would open next to the Wells Fargo Center, I think.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:19 PM
This is the sad truth – he’d be on another team in about five minutes. This is an obvious a case as there is , and if something drastic doesn’t happen – a bit suspension for starters – all the talk of getting rid of headshots is nonsense.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
I have tickets for the Flyers this week against Washington tomorrow night and Pittsburgh on Thursday.
No Crosby. No Malkin. No Ovie (just saw that he’s hurt). No Mike Green.
Dammit.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:20 PM
I completely support this statement.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
and if something drastic doesn’t happen – a bit suspension for starters – all the talk of getting rid of headshots is nonsense.
I think the league and the players* need to consider increasing the amount that can be fined under the CBA. The current maximum of $2.5K (in addition to lost wages while suspended) is not even a slap on the wrist.
*Yes, I understand the players will fight this
March 21st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
You can watch the true golden boy John Carlson and the true superstar Max Talbot.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Someone on that list does not belong with the others.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
This.
I will be amazed if Savard plays again. You could tell he wasn’t right the couple of games that he was back on the ice, and it wasn’t much of a decision to shut him down after the hit he took from Hunwick. The guy’s got a family and a future to think about; and this clown Cooke wasn’t even suspended for a hit that probably ends a player’s career? I don’t get it.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
Mike Green is nothing, if not entertaining.
Brooks Laich has to leave bread crumbs back to the defensive zone so Green knows where to find it.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
Bylsma and Shero have had less “ultimatum-like” discussions with him this year as well. The only hits above I can remotely defend are they Tyutin hit (Tyutin was a bitch and turned away – making it look worse than it was) and the Ovechkin hit, mainly because Ovechkin is a bitch who does the same thing to everyone else.

USA! USA! USA!
March 21st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Anything less than 10 games for Cooke would be a joke
March 21st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
I don’t know how anyone can hate a winner…
March 21st, 2011 at 1:26 PM
The current amount is definitely not going to make anyone take notice, but maybe the better punishment here is to make him play with the Oilers.

For the sake of argument, take out the fact that it was Cooke. Was the elbow really worse that the one Heatley hit Ott with last week? Or the one Marchand hit Umberger with?
Will be interesting to see how much being a repeat offender costs Cooke. 10 games is 5X what Heatley got.
/I guessed 6-8 games, hoping for 8

One more Hossa video because we’re only the champs for another 20 days.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Crosby. He’s way better* than the other three guys.
*Assuming his brain becomes unscrambled at some point

Come play for the Canucks! Where we put the likes of Tanti, Smyl and Gradin on our Wall of Fame!

Let’s not forget Avery’s boarding shot that he received NO punishment for.

Harold Snepsts would like to know why he’s not on this list.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
He is coming back right before the playoffs. Book it like Bookman.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:35 PM
And Harold Snepts, don’t forget him. Well known for his…mustache. This is the year though, I’m sure of it!
/not really
//that’s all I’ve got
March 21st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Of course not, but you can’t take out the fact that it was Cooke and he is the ultimate repeat offender
March 21st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
Pavel Bure would like to thank you for the brick you sent through his window.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:38 PM

The Canucks actually had Harold Snepts night last week! He of his 35 goals in almost 800 games with the Canucks.

Absolutely, I qualified with “for the sake of argument”.
The previous suspensions haven’t deterred him, it’s a bit of stretch to believe that another significant one either. I’m just curious to see what magnitude the repeat offender status earns him as compared to somewhat similar incidents.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:43 PM
Bure was so awesome. Shame the KGB fucked up his knee.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:44 PM
That one hit the post if I remember correctly. That was a heartbreaker, even though it was a great series. What gets me about those videos is how much clutching, hooking and grabbing there is. The one Canuck in the Bure vid (can’t see who it is) basically tackles the guy in the front of the net!
Doesn’t matter whether they lost or not, we still rioted.

Please don’t turn Vancouver into Montreal. Vancouver is too pretty to burn couches in the streets.
It was an amazing series. Especially after having two heart breakers in a row the two prior years with the Hawks losing to the Pens in a sweep and Gretz losing as a King.

He stole D.J. Tanner away from me. Fuck him.

Wrong Bure, that was Valeri.
Even as an Oilers fan, Pavel, pre knee injuries, was one of the most exciting players I’ve ever seen play in person.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
Bure in NHL 94 was sick. Without fail, every hockey thread gets an NHL 94 mention.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
It pretty much was a bunch of amateurs. If I remember they started rioting before game 7 was over! No couches though, just a lot of rubber bullets.
That riot still causes concern whenever there’s a major sporting event. They’ve even talked about extra security when the Whitecaps play Seattle in the MLS. If that causes a riot, well do you need a reason?
March 21st, 2011 at 1:52 PM

I was living there in ’94. IIRC, one guy was killed by a rubber bullet.

As it should. Best. Sports. Game. EVAR.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:54 PM
So Rusty Salei might be playing forward for the Wings tonight.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:54 PM
I didn’t think there were any French Canadians in Vancouver…
March 21st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
FUCK, that’s the second time I’ve done that in my life.
March 21st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Bstr, speaking of the Whitecaps, it looked like a great crowd for the game vs. TFC, I caught most of it on TSN. Did you see any reports of the actual attendance?
March 21st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
It was officially sold out, which at Empire Field is around 23,000. It was a great atmosphere (wasn’t there, just second hand), and some have even commented the Canucks and Lions could learn a thing or two from the Whitecaps. They’ve been around in some form for 37 years or so, so there is a very loyal following. I think they’ll do fine, and I’ll definitely be going to some games. My only concern is that they carry this over to BC Place, which never has any atmosphere.
It was a picture perfect day – sunny, 14 degrees or so – which helps, and beating Toronto at anything is always good. Plus they’re pretty good at marketing themselves as well…(NSFWish)
March 21st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Best part about the Cooke hit is that it ultimately cost his team the game. Fucking douchebag.
Great win for the rangers yesterday. I think I like this Rangers team more than any other in a long time.
March 23rd, 2011 at 9:18 AM
From now on a bad hit in Hockey should be refered to as a“Cooke” or ” He Cooke-ed him!” This will be his legacy! I trully hope he iwsn’t teaching his kids hockey!
