The Arizona – Texas Game’s Final Crazy Sequence
Texas got a rebound and called timeout with 14.5 seconds remaining. After returning form commercial, the referee calls a quick 5-second violation on Texas. The failed inbounds play begins at :23. With the ball and down 2-points, Arizona’s Derrick Williams gets the ball and makes a miracle shot as a blocking call earns him the and-1 opportunity. Williams (8-14 FT at that point) stepped to the line and buried the free throw. J’Covan Brown’s final drive was unsuccessful and Gary Johnson’s last second attempt drew contact, but no attention from the officials.

Terrible foul by Texas. Never trusting the Faghorns again.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:04 PM
Still talk of that “can’t call a timeout at 4″ on Twitter. Winer and crew said it after the game, Seth Davis saying it’s the first he’s ever heard of it.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:05 PM
They mentioned it’s a rule after the ref gets to 4 you cannot call timeout. In all my years following basketball have never heard of or seen this rule until today. Is it new?
March 20th, 2011 at 9:05 PM
It seems to me that the ref was counting pretty quickly, especially in a pivotal situation like that. He counted to one immediately after handing the ball over and it looked like he called the 5-second violation after 4 seconds.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:05 PM
Yeah total screwjob with the quick five count. The ref who made the call was very demonstrative about it, almost like something out of pro wrestling.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:13 PM
This makes no sense…I don’t believe this is a rule.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:18 PM
How about the fact that the Texas player literally got clubbed over the head going up for the shot, and it wasn’t called? Fuck the 5-second call, that other one was much more egregious.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:27 PM
I counted 4 right when he signaled. Also, this “can’t call timeout after 4 rule” apparently is the most violated rule of all time, because I see it happen all the time.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:28 PM
And can we put Jim Burr and his Hitler Youth hair cut out to pasture yet?
March 20th, 2011 at 9:32 PM
Even the big east refs suck.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:39 PM
Very well played.
If they had enforced the rule properly and granted Texas the timeout, it would have been interesting to see how they would of blown the game anyway.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:45 PM
Another Big East team going down, albeit to another Big East team, but a much, much lower Big East team.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:46 PM
scoop jardine blows
March 20th, 2011 at 9:47 PM
What a fantastic night. If Kansas loses it will only get better.

Jim Boeheim: mismanaging his time outs since 1987.
March 20th, 2011 at 9:51 PM
(fixed for personal bracketory reasons)
March 20th, 2011 at 9:51 PM
Upset at the lack of discipline and focus by Syracuse. Too many turnovers and too many offensive fouls. I’m not surprised at this outcome because Marquette took it to them earlier in the year. I hope scoop jardine goes away forever.
/now to root for Duke and UNC to both lose
//at least Syracuse lacrosse is undefeated and #1 in country
March 20th, 2011 at 9:53 PM
I also hope kemba walker breaks his legs before next weekend
March 20th, 2011 at 9:59 PM
How is Rick Pitino on tv opinionating (real word?) on a tournament he was just eliminated from days ago.
And why would CBS/TNT hire such an unlikable person?
March 20th, 2011 at 10:01 PM
The Texas PG took way too much time getting a shot off. He prevented the opportunity of getting an offensive rebound with any time remaining on the clock.
March 20th, 2011 at 10:04 PM
Totally agree. He played it like it was a tie game and he wanted to get off the last shot.
March 20th, 2011 at 10:13 PM
Looked like somebody from Texas got absolutely mugged under the rim, though. Much harder foul than either of the fouls in the Butler/Pitt game.
March 20th, 2011 at 10:18 PM
Illinois is blowing it. Gotta capitalize.

March 20th, 2011 at 10:25 PM
At least the dirty catholics are losing. Suck it notre dame and jersey!
March 20th, 2011 at 10:26 PM
The ref went Donaghy in the last 20 seconds of the game. The bunk 5 second call and the no call at the end of the game.
March 20th, 2011 at 10:26 PM
Notre Dame in deep, deep do-do
And if anyone gets clarification on the Syracuse over-and-back … please let me know
March 20th, 2011 at 10:26 PM
So the Big East is going to lose EVERY game against another conference this weekend? Wow
March 20th, 2011 at 10:29 PM
TBL – I tweeted you, he caught it in frontcourt then stepped over into back-court. Over and back. He could have let the pass cross half court and caught it there. No problem. His mistake was trying to catch it short of half court. Once you do that, you can’t cross over the mid court line just like any other situation.
the freeby is the in bounds pass can be thrown into the back court. But you can’t catch it in front court and then step over into back court.

Awful shooting. Terrible.

The ref who made the call was very demonstrative about it, almost like something out of pro wrestling
this reminds me that soon we will see arrogant showman umpires daily

yeah baby, fsu doing work. there are two schools of thought on brackets….fill them out immediately and don;t get yerself all confused with litening and reading analysts, or do all that research and be sayed by analysis.
i do them fast cuz i don;t care that much, but i heard some strong opinion right away that fsu would give nd trouble because of its lengthy defense. so i went with fsu in the bracket and gambling
March 20th, 2011 at 11:12 PM
jeezus…listening and swayed, for those scoring at home
/or if yer alone
March 20th, 2011 at 11:14 PM
According to ESPN’s watch the ref made the 5 second call at 4.1 seconds. The Texas player called the timeout at 3.9 seconds. ESPN also got a quote from the NCAA head of officials and according to him a player can call a timeout all the way up to the 5 seconds.
Terrible, terrible call.
March 20th, 2011 at 11:15 PM
Looked like a four count to me.
March 20th, 2011 at 11:16 PM
Yeah, Rockstar, you beat me to it. I looked and my first thought was that the ref REALLY wanted to make that call.

I used my free house time to be at work too much, but left at noon to play some golf, where followed pars on the first two holes with a LeBron on the next two (triple-double, you like?). Then I got really drunk at a friends place because the Pitt game pissed me off, and yardwork dishes/laundry today.

There was a large amount of time spent drinking and shaking my head. Somehow, I still blame Gary McGhee

Just got a good look at the Syracuse over and back call. It was NOT over and back. By rule, there is no team possession during an inbounds call. So, when Jardine catches the ball while airborne, this establishes possession. However, since the team is not in possession when he catches it, the previously location of his feet DOES NOT apply. So, he can land on the line, in the backcourt, etc. without penalty.
However, Jardine does travel on the catch. His right foot lands on the line, establishing the right foot as the pivot. The left then comes down, and Jardine lifts his right foot and replaces it in the frontcourt, effectively changing his pivot foot.
So, yes it was a turnover. Syracuse did not get jobbed.

Doug Gottlieb is still calling the Big East hands down the best conference in America.
I’m sorry, but you lose a 1, 2, 3, and 4 seed on the first weekend, you are not the best. You are overrated. The only thing more overrated than the Big East is the NFC East.
/biggest =\= best
March 21st, 2011 at 8:33 AM
Seems to me you should be faulting the seeding committee.
March 21st, 2011 at 8:35 AM
The best conference in the country has had a horrible tournament.
March 21st, 2011 at 8:40 AM
For everyone saying the Big East isnt the best conference, I’d love to hear who is.
March 21st, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Did Gottlieb hike in from the Andes to Mike and Mike this morning?
March 21st, 2011 at 11:34 AM
The 1 seed always loses and the 3 seed lost to an 11 seed from it’s own conference that would have been a top 4 team in the ACC, Pac10, Big10 (not even arguable).
