well, there went my kate upton fantasy. god dammmit, that girl shouldnever have shoes or a dress on.
March 14th, 2011 at 8:22 AM
i have one kid per region, so i had each kid (three preschoolers and a 10yo) make picks in each region and the wife, who knows nothing about sports, picked the FF and tiebreaker (final score)
One Play-In made the FF, Illlini beat Temple 112-68 for the title
/confetti!
//subsequent recruiting scandals!!
March 14th, 2011 at 8:31 AM
yeah, notre dame grad showing off his smarts….the best thing to do for a an NFL player is to have a hobby where he gets hit over and over in the head
March 14th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
I honestly don’t understand the obsession with Kate Upton. Sooooooo many hotter chicks than her.
March 14th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
My teenage self approves
Horrendous call – feeds right into the Duke/flopping stereotype
March 14th, 2011 at 8:33 AM
Bizarre arrest: Josh Powell of the Hawks was cuffed for refusing to move his car that was blocking an ambulance
that’s not bizarre. he was a dick. not like it was a neighbor
March 14th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
Jenny McCarthy is still in fantastic shape
My teenage self approves
as does my 44yo self. she was even hotter in the 90s, not because she was younger but because of her humor
March 14th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
I really fucking hate when daylight savings time ends.
March 14th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
sg, her bikini shots and that famous ass shot of her and her friend are pure gold, but that pic above? i’m a barefoot and ponytail lover tho, so maybe not the right target audience. yer right, there a million as hot or hotter, dpending on the eye of the beholder
/i’d hold her
March 14th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
So I had to endure a two day, 6.5 hours per day seminar on childbirth that my wife wanted to attend despite the fact that all of our friends who went said it wasn’t worth it. It was one of the most excrutiating and painful experiences of my life (appropriate given the topic).
March 14th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
I’m at a loss for words.
March 14th, 2011 at 8:45 AM
easy dork. upton looks like a 12-yo in the pic above, while a hot woman who has goofball humor is better than a hot woman who is brain-dead and wouldn;t be caught dead making a face or cracking a joke
March 14th, 2011 at 8:48 AM
I guess I was unaware that anyone ever actually found Jenny McCarthy funny.
The besmirching of Upton. I guess I’m going to let it be and just remain stunned.
March 14th, 2011 at 8:48 AM
if you’re buying into the media hype of a nuclear meltdown in Japan, please read this.
it’s lengthy, but very informative.
March 14th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
That call makes me sick. Really wish the charge/player control foul would be called correctly of just eliminated, because that is dispicable and it happens 4-5 times a game. NO WAY the “defense” should be rewarded there.
March 14th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
sorry roeth. my wife had a kid in her first marriage, so we didn;t need all that. we did go to a class to teach my stepson how to get ready for having another kid in the house when she was pregnant with our first. he was 5 and had been The Man up until then
March 14th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
The besmirching of Upton. I guess I’m going to let it be and just remain stunned.
well i’m not gonna argue with you. read what i wrote to sg. i am commenting only on the picture above. her bikini stuff is untouchable. just another RU pic that does the subject no favors
March 14th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
i love when the power goes out and you wake up because it’s light out, freak out and the first ten thoughts that pop into your head all begin with “fuck.”
March 14th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
@Roeth
unless you are going natural, child birth classes are pointless IMO
March 14th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
That call makes me sick. Really wish the charge/player control foul would be called correctly of just eliminated, because that is dispicable and it happens 4-5 times a game. NO WAY the “defense” should be rewarded there.
very hard to make the call at home. if you saw 100 plays under the basket, w/o knowing the actual call, how many would you get right? two feet down doesn;t seem to work, being set doesn;t seem to work. no consistency
March 14th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
I didn’t get it. They made us do all of these breathing and movement exercises and stuff and then, when the instructor asked if the women were getting epidurals, all of them said yes. Once that occurs they’re stuck in the bed regardless and won’t feel anything.
Then, we had to endure the ‘parenting for idiots’ videos on stuff like “Don’t Shake the Baby”.
March 14th, 2011 at 8:57 AM

One of the benefits of having a nerdy dad who worked at a nuclear power plant for 30 years…
March 14th, 2011 at 8:58 AM
unless you feel like yer really out of yer depth, don;t sweat it. if anything, talk to the nurse who cares for your wife and baby afterwards. they know a lot and you have her in the room for minutes at a time sevral times a day. and you will score major points if you can stay with the wife in the room as long as she’s there. my wife has had nothing but c-sections, so that’s a day or two stay (three pregnancies, four kids, huge babies)
March 14th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
Oh, people are buying into it. A blog I go to is urging people to get iodine pills and stock up on supplies.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
The rule is written that the defender has to establish and maintain a legal guarding position prior to the shooter leaving the floor. They are allowed to move to maintain this position, and even turn to absorb the contact. Nowhere in the rule book does it talk about “being set” or “having both feet down”
The biggest issue on this play is that the contact is so miniscule that it should have been a no-call.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
i love when the power goes out and you wake up because it’s light out, freak out and the first ten thoughts that pop into your head all begin with “fuck.”
fuck, what time is it?
fuck, i’m late.
fuck, it’s monday.
fuck, who’s this next to me?
fuck, my head hurts.
fuck this, i’m going back to bed.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
Roeth, my wife made me attwnd those classes as well. The only thing I found beneficial was practicing putting diapers on a cabbage patch kid.

sheeeeeeeeeit…i wish.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
We didn’t even do that – the instructor just showed us how to put one on around the “stump”
March 14th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
thanks for linking that, ill. I’ve been pretty captivated all weekend with the earthquake/tsunami coverage because of the massive amounts of footage during the events. the coverage of the nuclear plants’ problems has been sketchy though and reports have been incredibly conflicting.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
the dominance of european golf has been greatly exaggerated.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:03 AM
Nowhere in the rule book does it talk about “being set” or “having both feet down”
so you can draw a charge while moving into position, one foot reaching for your destination, so to speak? seems analysts are always mentiuoning being set and two feet down when they go to the replay
March 14th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
you know, it’s really not so bad when you forget about it the night before and your phone and alarm clock reset themselves automatically.
i really think a lot of the reaction to it is mental.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
Most of my clocks changed on their own but that still doesn’t make up the hour of sleep I just lost. I tried to go to bed at 10 (formerly 9pm) last night and couldn’t fall asleep. Then the alarm went off at what was before 4:30am. That really fucking sucks.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
well yea…im not pissed at daylight savings because my arm hurts.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
Here’s the criteria:
The guard is assumed to have obtained a guarding position if he/she is in the
dribbler’s path facing him/her initially with both feet on the floor). After the initial
legal guarding position is obtained, a guard is not required either or both feet
on the playing court. No specific stance or distance is required. The question to
be answered is—who was at the spot first? Was the guard facing the dribbler with
two feet on the floor? If so, he/she has obtained a legal guarding position. Time
and distance are of no consequence. The guard may shift to maintain his/her
position in the path of the opponent provided he/she does not charge into the
opponent or cause contact as outlined in Rule 10. If the defensive player, in a
legal guarding position on the offensive player with the ball, is beaten (offensive
player must get head and shoulders past the plane of the torso of the defensive
player) the defensive player must reobtain a new legal guarding position with
both feet on the floor and facing the player with the ball.
The guard, once a guarding position has been obtained, may turn or duck to
absorb shock or avoid injury when contact by the dribbler is imminent. However,
the guard may not cause contact by moving under or in front of a passer or
shooter after the offensive player is in the air with his/her feet off the floor.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
@miz – you’re welcome. i’m not sure why anyone would rely on media coverage when it comes to something as complex as a nuclear metldown.
@spencer – agreed. but you’re fishing with that statement.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:12 AM
It’s because Coach K decided in 1989 to teach flopping and “selling” charges to officials, who in lieu of actually calling it based on the rules, were duped into the dramatic aciting. The problem is 20 years later, the ONLY way to induce offensive fouls is to appear to be stationary and squared up and then act as if you’ve been hit by a cannonball in the chest. FUCK that…6’10″, 250 guys falling like timber is a MFing joke; should be a technical foul like diving in futbol.
Yes, my team is in the NIT, my kid is sick, I am on 2 hours sleep plus daylight savings and I am grumpy…
March 14th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
but the tv told me the talking heads were experts….?
March 14th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
the dominance of european golf has been greatly exaggerated.
would you be against merging the euro and pga tours so that there’s better criteria for ranking players?
March 14th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
yeah, they’ve been very contradicting in coverage. it reminded me of September 11 when I was living up in the DC-area. I watched CNN all day and there are two things that I still remember that were just blatantly wrong and were never addressed…Wolf Blitzer reported multiple times that car bombs had been detonated at the Lincoln Memorial and that hijacked planes were still circling Dulles International.
earthquake coverage always fascinates me though because a large part of my MS was seismic-related. seeing the pictures and video are like watching a real-time lab experiment except, unfortunately, real people are also getting killed.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
Where is everyone today? Hungover from Saturday and couldn’t make it to work? You kids these days can’t hold your liquor.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
i think that’s really the only way, but then again, i don’t think the euro’s would especially like that and they’re already pissy as it is only having one major on euro soil.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
it’s so fucking ridiculous seeing how wrong they are on certain subjects where I consider myself an expert. I see them report or analyze something and think “well, that’s blatantly wrong, but potentially millions of people just heard the same thing and don’t know that it’s so wrong.”
March 14th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
..and I’m not suggesting there are NO offensive fouls. Using your shouldler to bulldoze inside or swinging around with your arms to gain advantage or driving out of control – fouls.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:20 AM
yeah, it’s depressing alright. been watching the bbc news in the mornings when i’ve got time for TV…so much more refreshing getting news and facts rather than spin and misinformed analysis.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:22 AM
Based on yesterday’s game I’d suggest there are no DEFENSIVE fouls on Sullinger. He was killing/holding people all game off the ball and on rebounds and Teddy Valentine and crew just let him go.
Of course as soon as PSU breathed on him at the other end it was a foul. He set the record for most FTs attempted at the Big Ten tourney despite having a bye in the first round.

i won the St Patty’s day 5k for the 20-29 age group and celebrated with a large bar tab filled with irish car bombs.

Fuck you heathen… how was your Saturday?
March 14th, 2011 at 9:27 AM
i firmly believe that if any of the early top 4 last week…watney, DJ, mahan or kuchar played full time in europe, they’d be a top 5 player in the rankings.
europe is diluted.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
Just a God awful call. Rewarding a dude for being a tremendous pussy. Refs are having a horrid year in CBB. I know not many saw it but there was a foul called at the end of the America East final that decided the game. It was the worst call of the year hands down. There are going to be some bad bad calls in the coming weeks and there’s nothing we can do about it.

there you are! Boozed for 8 hours straight. Saw more than one girl unable to walk up or down stairs and/or puking in the bathroom at 1pm. Rookies for sure. What about you? How many ladies did the wrestling belt help you land?

The course was over 6,400 yards, they didn’t know what to do.
it’s that faggy bermuda grass that kills the euros. they can’t grasp that everything is a “flier” coming out of that shit.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:31 AM
@Spencer, I’m on board with that statement, I can’t support Kuchar in any way shape or form due to his putter.
Kaymer is for real IMO. Young, good head on him, so it seems.
The “rise” of the European golfer is more of a timing of the victories they’ve had here more than anything. Nothing more, nothing less.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:31 AM
If Tech hires anyone other than Craig Neal, I will be pretty stunned.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:32 AM
Thank you, TBL, thank you.
Gotta ask….do you guys celebrate St. Paddy’s day on Thursday too? It’s massive here in KC on the actual day, but there are other things to do on the Saturday before.
It’s 30 and snowing here right now….but supposed to be 70 and sunny on Thursday. Mother Nature just escaped an ass beating by doing that.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:34 AM
I love it when it’s light out from about 6:00 am to about 9:00 pm…my favorite time of the year. it’s warm too.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:34 AM
The wrestling belt didn’t make it down. You weren’t the only female who suggested it was a bad idea. But my beer mug hat was the shit. I lost count of all the carbombs after about noon, but I know we just kept drinking them. It still didn’t stop me from talking like the Rock all day.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:35 AM
thanks for the Jenny link, TBL. She looks fantastic.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:36 AM
not sure if that list is in any particular order or not, but Mike Anderson is #1 on Arkansas list as well. if he doesn’t get hired here I can see the whole hiring process turning into a giant shit-show.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:36 AM
/nods in approval.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:36 AM
Abso-fucking-lutely.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:37 AM
So…uh…Go Dawgs? They even get the Friday night slot, meaning I get to watch them in Vegas after an entire day of drinking. The potential for disaster is high.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:37 AM
Welll, if it’s on a weekday, Not until I get out of work. But this year, since it starts at the same time of the tourney, I took off. I plan on going into Manhattan and yelling “HERNIA!” until he comes out and faces me*.
*And by that I mean, comes with me to Foley’s

I know people still go out for St. Patrick’s day but it’s not anywhere near as big as the weekend festivities. Or should I say “festivity” as the South Side Irish Parade no longer exists.

March 14th, 2011 at 9:38 AM
i don’t think you can say that…the OWGR runs on a 2 year schedule so the euros are banking off of all their high finishes due to the lack of depth on the euro tour week in and out.
the thing i want to know regarding the OWGR…why is it that euros who have barely won are littering the top 25 but stewart cink and angel cabrera, the open and masters champs from two years ago, were playing in puerto rico?
they weight the PGA and euro events the same in the ranking calculation…that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:38 AM
This made me laugh.
Didn’t have a belt when I went to St. Louis two weeks ago, but I did have a grenade whistle. It was the hit of the day. There wasn’t a chick that came by that didn’t want to blow it.

While the death threat stuff may be true, all those listening to the attorney, Chris Cicero should heed warning. He is an unethical, lying, dirty bastard. He has had his license suspended for screwing a judge, then blackmailing her to get favorable rulings. Remember, he also broke attorney/client priviledge with a potential client to e-mail Tressel.
ESPN has been going all in on this guy, and based on the attorneys I know in Columbus, that is a dicey proposition. Dude is only on the lookout for himself, and right now, while backed in a corner, he will say or do anything to keep his license.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:39 AM
I really am excited for you. That is going to be so awesome.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
jersey…you’re in vegas too this weekend, right?
March 14th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Which is total horseshit, BTW.
Cheer up though…..St. Paddy’s is on a Saturday next year. The amount of alcohol consumed on that day should rival a weekend in Vegas.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:41 AM
So we are going to talk about the “Fab Five” at some point right? I thought it was outstanding.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:41 AM
Also, there were about 50 people wearing Charlie Sheen-related t-shirts this weekend. The country is over saturated with Sheen at this point. I didn’t think any of the shirts were funny. Nor were the people saying “winning” all the time.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:42 AM
I assume UGA will lose, but I know there will be a half-dozen shit faced UGA grads there cheering them on. Definitely looking forward to it.

God damn it… that was on last night? I forgot to record it!! Son of a bitch.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:43 AM
Let’s not even talk about the Austalasian tour, and how a journeyman dipshit like Brendan Jones slips into Match Play.

Appears to be alphabetical order, otherwise Brian Gregory would be WAY down the list, or at least below Mooney.

March 14th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
I’m ashamed to call myself a man.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Media at its worst. It’s a shame that the worst earthquake ever was the only thing to get them to shut up about it.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
I’m sure it will be on again. The Webber timeout part was pretty powerful.
Kind of made it look like someone on the bench was telling him to call timeout, no?
March 14th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
I remember that 93 title game like it was yesterday, down to specific plays and commentary by Nance and Packer.
That was the first College Basketball title game that I can remember watching.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
One of the loneliest feelings ever. Jalen Rose and Jimmy King were outstanding describing the emotion and feeling after that game.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
I was a senior in college when they were freshmen, and I distinctly remember there being absolutely no buzz about them come tourney time. Sure they were hyped, but they were just an above average team in the Big Ten. Jim Jackson and Ohio State were head and shoulders above them. That run came out of nowhere, and I don’t exactly remember people talking about how they were under-seeded.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
It did, but just a couple minutes earlier the entire coaching staff drilled it into their heads that there were no timeouts.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
i was going to go with a Sheen reference, something along the lines of Vatican Warlock Assassins, but i couldn’t find a good avatar for it.
ended up going with Fear and Loathing on the Field of Dreams with a Ralph Steadman drawing for an avatar.
March 14th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
It did, but just a couple minutes earlier the entire coaching staff drilled it into their heads that there were no timeouts.
Yeah… it’s on Webber to know that there aren’t any TO’s to call… but still… in the heat of the moment… if I were him and I picked up my dribble and was in trouble and heard someone yell “time out!” I probably would have done the same thing. You can see him turn to the bench right after and yell “why’d you motherfuckers tell me to call timeout?”
I think it said a lot that he didn’t point any fingers when he was asked after the game. Just said that “he didn’t remember” if anyone said it or not.

Okay, so lemme get this straight: no meltdown at the nuke plant?
No… I read that linked article. It damaged the plant.. but nothing of real danger escaped into the environment. They had like 8 back-up plans for emergencies like this one. Japan might lose about 15% of its power supply while they check the other nuke plants for damage and repair the ones in question, but that’s about it.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
Going to still place Winning Time above the Fab 5, but I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation last night. Made me feel bad for C-Webb even. Also made me really like Jalen Rose.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
Exactly. They had SEVEN losses in the Big 10, fer chrissakes. They had definitely generated some media coverage over the novelty of the 5 freshman starters, but nobody was saying that the team was underseeded.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Thanks ATL.

Also… wasn’t it more like the “Fab 3″ plus King and Jackson? Seems like that white dude that could shoot really helped them in the big games in the tournament more than King and Jackson did.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Back then my college buddies and I drafted all 64 teams in a tourney draft. The one with the most wins by their teams won the pool. We had 8 participants, and I distinctly remember drafting the Fab Five in the 4th round of that draft, which put them somewhere in the 24-32 range of teams.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
Howard, Webber and Rose were the main players, but King made a lot of big plays. Jackson was the least touted but he was still part of the recruiting class. By “the white guy” I assume you mean Polinka. He was on the 89 title team and got a 5th year so he played in 1993 too. He could shoot from 3 pretty well. He also looks like Rob Lowe now.

RE: Japan Nuclear Plants….
The plant remained intact after experiencing an earthquake that was 7! times stronger than what it was built to sustain. (Was built to sustain 8.2). What really fucked them over was the Tsunami took out the back-up diesel generators that supplied power to the cooling systems… but they had TWO! backups for that as well… battery power that would last for 8 hours… and then they tried getting mobile generators to the site, but the only ones available weren’t compatible. So as a last result, they used seawater…
What pisses me off is this will just light a fire under the ass of the anti-nuclear activists… even though this plant had pretty much the worst case scenario 10X over thrown at it, and it was designed so well that in the end it really won’t harm the environment.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
Uh, are the ones here in the US built that well?

not sure why, but I had a hearty laugh at this, thanks.

Also, Eric Riley was definitely a bigger contributor than Ray Jackson, and probably should have been starting.

March 14th, 2011 at 10:18 AM

The reason Chernobyl had a melt-down was because not only was it VERY poorly designed, but the operators lost their shit and didn’t do anything by the book when the meltdown started, and only made it worse. Even with the poor design, the meltdown at Chernobyl could have been prevented if the operators followed protocol. At least that’s what I’ve read.

See I was thinking, “this will keep us from building more nuke plants.” I’m not a fan of them but I realize that they can be well protected and built.

I don’t get all the nuclear haterade. They’re so much better/more efficient than coal and gas power plants AND don’t pollute the environment. (I know you’ll go to the “well if they meltdown they’ll completely fuck over the environment) However, they have so many emergency/contingency back-ups, it’s impossible for that to happen unless you live in Soviet-era Russia.

Nuclear plants are inspected much more frequently than your average highway overpass. It’s not like these things are built and then left to the operators to maintain over the years. They have to pass rigorous inspections by the government.

the real runners were in the 30-39 age group. from what people were telling me, that’s the strongest age group for marathon runners. i can’t really figure out why though…
March 14th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
they did an incredible job anticipating scenarios. if I understand it correctly, the seawater usage means the plant will never be operable again, which really sucks for the Japanese people in the long term.
geological data from tens of thousands of years is used in nuclear power plant design here in the US. most buildings are designed to withstand earthquakes with a 100 to 500 year return period here. a nuke power plant is usually designed for about a 10000 year return period earthquake. what I don’t know is if we employ the same number of backup systems in the case of a one-two punch like a massive earthquake followed by a tsunami.
for perspective, the largest earthquake recorded* in the US was the 1811-1812 quakes along the New Madrid seismic zone that are estimated to have been greater than 8.0 (Mississippi River flowed backwards, Real Foot Lake formed, rang church bells in Pennsylvania and New York) and the New Madrid faults are estimated to have a 500 year return period.
*no seismometers back then so the magnitude is based off of wave propogation, geology, and newspaper accounts from the time period.

Sign me up. I just think these activists are being hypocritical. They say they want to save the environment, so we come up with a very efficient way to produce power and not pollute the environment. However, they say that’s not good enough – using the 1 in 1,000,000,000,000 chance that an accident might happen as justification. There’s nothing that irks me more than hypocrites.
If these fuckers have any other feasible alternatives besides coal and gas fueled power plants, I’m all ears.

Too late… I paid $60 yesterday to fill up my mid-size sedan. Fuck me. I can’t imagine how anyone can afford to drive a truck/SUV. Pretty soon the amount of $ you spend on gas per month will rival your car payment.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
actually, the problem is the general public perspective. building codes and required design loads are based on the probability of events occuring. thus, bridges are designed for a life expectancy of 80 years…buildings are generally designed for a life expectancy of 50 years. our perspective, however, is seeing high profile buildings that are very functional and bridges that are very operational that are well past their design life expectancy. that doesn’t mean they will all fall down soon. it just means that their designs were very conservative and now they are still “living” and need to be maintained more than ever.
write your congressman.

If/When we get another major eastern half of the US earthquake there will be some serious shit fucked up. In particular, the MO/TEN/KY border area and Charleston, SC areas. Eastern half earthquakes are way different than the west coast ones. The wave is distributed over a much larger area.

Yep. I’m not a user, but tax it and treat it like it’s booze. We can make money and hit the cartels.

//cause fuck em that’s why
March 14th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
this deserves a caveat though…the life expectancies and design requirements are assigned based on usage and importance. a major interstate bridge will have more stringent design requirements than your average county highway bridge. same for buildings; hospitals have more stringent requirements than retail strip malls.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Nuclear plants are inspected much more frequently than your average highway overpass. It’s not like these things are built and then left to the operators to maintain over the years.
Although, if the right-wing conservatives had their way, they would be left to the operators to inspect/maintain (Government is EVIL!!! AHHH!) I’m sure they wouldn’t cut a few corners to save a buck or two though…

Anything that causes us to go toe to toe with drug cartels makes me happy. We can spin it as having a war on drugs while keeping jobs and creating an economy in the US. Win/win as far as we can tell. Shit. We’ll just let our Secretary or pre-emptive strikes deal with this.

there’s a funny cycle in the Commercial Appeal. when news gets slow, there’s a writer that will write about the next “big one” and his articles are supposed to be serious, but it’s so much scare tactics to elicit a reaction that they’re kinda amusing. the History Channel does a Mega Disasters series and they came to Memphis once to do on one the next “big one.” they interviewed me and filmed me doing a presentation and that CA writer was there. apparently, I wasn’t doom-and-gloom enough for any of my presentation to make it onto the show, but they used some of my graphics so I got my name in the credits (instant fame!!). the CA writer cherry-picked some of my stuff and wrote a whole article around just a few of my quotes.
