Mark Sanchez Was Just Lucky Last Year. At Least That’s What the Stats Say
Mark Sanchez: As a rookie, Mark Sanchez quarterbacked the Jets to the AFC title game. The stats said the Jets won in spite of him – his stats were very JaMarcus Russell-like (my retort is on that link). In year two, Mark Sanchez quarterbacked the Jets to the AFC title game. Now, the stats say Sanchez was the luckiest QB in the league because defenders kept dropping would-be interceptions. This settles it – Mark Sanchez is a crappy, lucky, quarterback! Boy, I wish the Jets would trade Sanchez for a statistical beast like Kyle Orton! I wonder what the critics will say if Sanchez gets to the AFC title game a third year in a row? [AFC East Blog]

I wonder what the critics will say if Sanchez gets to the AFC title game a third year in a row?
They’ll say he’s a failure because Rex promised a Super Bowl.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
“Can’t win the big one” goes here.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
I don’t think the critics will need to worry about that.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Team sport.
I would hope they’d say it’s an accomplishment. However, it’s not quite on par with the Buffalo Bills of the 1990s… and I’m not sure you’d want to be associated with that group of teams anyways.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
i wonder what the jets fans will say if they get to another AFC championship game w/o winning it.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
That the Jets are becoming the Eagles?
March 14th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Your sarcasm aside, the guys at FO are generally spot on.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
One more thing…
Doesn’t football outsiders have anything better to do than poke holes in this guy? I swear every time I see something from them, it’s in regards to Mark Sanchez. Use your magical wizard stats to quantify something else, please.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
I don’t know. Will they finally win their division this time?
March 14th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Haters gonna hate, TBL.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
It’s March, plus there’s a lockout/strike.
File this post under ‘who cares?’
March 14th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
They’ll say he should give the keys to a different quarterback.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Whats crazy is that interception machine Carson also had 9 drops.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Who cares

If he played in Jacksonville, he’d be an All Pro because it’s easier to play there.

you know it’s bad when even the defense doesn’t want to catch his passes.

People who think college basketball is a boring, horrible excuse of a sport.
I would much rather discuss the dirty’s overratedness than who may or may not be the 70th best team.

HE’S THE FAB 5 OF QUARTERBACKS! SO CULTURALLY RELEVANT AND COOL! THE ESTABLISHMENT AINT BE READY FOR SANCHEZ!
March 14th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Textbook definition of a polarizing figure: half the country thinks he’s Joe Namath, the other half thinks he’s Browning Nagle.
/they’re both wrong
March 14th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Winning a Super Bowl cures this talk. Eli is not a great QB but he has a ring. Which as a fan, is what I want out of my starting QB. Not a string of AFC Championship games.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
yep.
but i think sanchez will need the rest of the jets to get the afc title game. can’t do it on his own.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
It’s too damn early for the this stuff, TBL.
/goes back to fantasizing about being vice president
March 14th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
No! No! If you take a way his throw the keys to ability, he literally has nothing else left! Ok, well he could pick up the register girl at any Abercrombie, Hollister, or American Apparel, and that is a very useful gift… but still, do not take away his throw the keys to-ness.

I hope he hired a body language coach this offseason.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Now, now, let’s not rush to judgment. He’s just like that other Jets QB who took NY by storm and won the Jets a SB (
March 14th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
This whole thing made me want a cheeseburger. If the TBL commenters were going to get in a car to go get cheeseburgers, I’d give you the keys jersey.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Hey, I never said anything about that. I will always blame Andy Reid first and foremost.

I don’t think there is any doubt that both he and the Jets were really lucky last season.

Damn fat fingers!
According to Jets fans, it’s the BIGGEST UPSET IN THE SUPER BOWL EVAR! He’ll win one soon and give Jets fans something to crow about for another 40+ years. Just look at Rangers fans. They still talk about their Stanley cup win 18 years ago.

Yeah, the Jets need to win a Super Bowl to start talking shit.

It was 17 years ago! Just know, that if the Knicks ever wina SB, lock your doors and don’t come out for about 24 hours. SHit will get weird.

hey, peyton might be available for a huge contract.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
What is the rules for English Soccer? Do you get to brag about winning a tournament in 2005 when Liverpool has not won the league title since 1990? Just wondering.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
That would be weird.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
True, I can think of pretty much nothing weirder than the Knicks winning a Super Bowl.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:22 AM

I don’t make excuses for Liverpool. I call them out when they’re shite, but continue to support them. I just don’t hang my hat on the last time they won a championship and talk about the good old days. Giants won a Super Bowl in 2007(THE BIGGEST UPSET EVAR!), and all anyone can say is that Eli is an ugly retard who throws too many INTs. While that’s probably true, he still got us the SB.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Most Liverpool fans I know only talk about the history of the club. Granted, I live in New Jersey. So it is a limited group.
As for Eli, I agree, last I checked 6 active QB’s have a Super Bowl ring, and that is what I want as a Giant fan. Eli might be the worst of the 6, but he is on the list.
As for the Rangers, if I only get to see one Stanley Cup win for the Rangers in my lifetime, the ’94 run was certainly fun.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Sanchez is not as bad as his detractors say nor is he as good as the two AFC title games would have you believe. He makes plenty of mistakes, but he also makes some nasty throws. He seems like a gamer, for lack of a better word. He will suck it up plenty of times, but when the stage is bright, he seems to play well.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:43 AM

I don’t like the Jets or Sanchez but admire the heck out of his off field play
March 14th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
While we are discussing Liverpool (sorta) they do have two champions league final apperances AND the biggest come back win EVAH. Wait, EVAH??? Ever. Who talks like that? Anyway point being they haven’t won the league but have won something bigger.
I admire Liverpool but don’t cheer for them

Man, I hate when football discussions happen early, I always miss the good stuff.
One thing about FO, their stats are put together from watching the actual game. This isn’t a “look at the box score and twist numbers to make Sanchez look bad” type of thing. They watch/chart every game, not just the RedZone channel highlights.
/Nobody is here to care…

TBL understanding anything related to statistics is more of a stopped clock is right twice a day kind of thing,.
March 14th, 2011 at 4:48 PM
This settles it – Mark Sanchez is a crappy, lucky, quarterback! Boy, I wish the Jets would trade Sanchez for a statistical beast like Kyle Orton!
For someone who prides himself on the vigorous use of statistics in explaining a point (or is that duffy?) you would think TBL would take off his Jets goggles long enough to recognize how big of an outlier that stat is. Sorry TBL, but how else can you describe it as anything but luck? His play in the divisional round against the Colts was probably the worst play I’ve seen at QB in a playoff game (think second and third quarters, where he was missing on hitch routes and screens.) Just an NFC impartial observer’s 2 cents.

SIC – Where did i “describe it as anything but luck?”

This settles it – Mark Sanchez is a crappy, lucky, quarterback!
I gathered from your reaction that you weren’t pleased with his take, and for what it’s worth, I don’t think he’s a crappy QB. The question I pose to you is this: Do you think he could be more consistent if he were given more leeway in passing situations, and the passing game was treated more as a weapon and less of a “keep-their-run-defense-honest-and-don’t-screw-it-up” approach? I trashed his 2nd and 3rd quarter, but he did have a pretty memorable 4th quarter culminating in that Braylon Edwards sideline grab (so maybe my question is already dated?) Thoughts?
