2011 NCAA Tournament Bracket Analysis: How Much Does Experience Matter in March?
Last night, Seth Davis of CBS sent out a tweet that said: “My best advice is favor experience. Go to kenpom.com. He has whole country ranked on experience. Teams like UK, UNC and Texas rely on frosh.” Now, being the general skeptic I am, I had to drop the preview of the Southeast Region that I was procrastinating about, and immediately check this out. My mind went to counter-examples, like the Fab Five that was just featured in an ESPN documentary last night, or Carmelo Anthony leading Syracuse to the title in 2003.
So, I went to Ken Pomeroy’s site, and looked up the teams by experience. He only has that information for the last four years, so we are somewhat limited by the information available. Still, I looked at the teams seeded 1-12 in each of those four seasons (192 total teams) and divided them into quartiles. (I limited it to #12 seeds or better since lower seeds rarely win, experience or not). I then looked at the top 12 and bottom 12 teams in “experience” on Pomeroy’s site, which is weighted for playing time.
The 48 “experienced” teams were expected to win 58.1 games based on seeding, while the “inexperienced” teams were expected to win 64.2. Close, but the inexperienced teams were seeded slightly higher on average. However, the actual results were pretty dramatic. The experienced teams won 70 tournament games, for a +11.9 win differential.
The inexperienced teams, only 45 tournament wins, -19.2 wins below what should be expected based on their seed. Five #1 seeds were in the top 12 in experience, and four reached the Final Four, with the last three national champions all being #1 seeds that ranked in the Top 12 in the experience factor among teams seeded #12 or higher. The five #1 seeds that were in the bottom 12 in experience: 1 Final Four (UCLA 2008). The “inexperienced” teams that were seeded between #3 and #6 went a dreadful 9-8 in the first round of the tournament.
So, who are these teams this year?
Top 12 Most Experienced Teams Seeded 1 to 12, per Pomeroy’s metric
- #6 St. John’s
- #12 Utah State
- #9 Old Dominion
- #2 Notre Dame
- #5 West Virginia
- #12 Richmond
- #10 Penn State
- #11 Virginia Commonwealth
- #6 Xavier
- #2 San Diego State
- #10 Georgia
- #8 Butler
Top 12 Least Experienced Teams Seeded 1 to 12, per Pomeroy’s metric
- #12 Memphis
- #8 Michigan
- #3 Connecticut
- #2 North Carolina
- #4 Kentucky
- #7 UCLA
- #3 Syracuse
- #11 Gonzaga
- #5 Arizona
- #4 Texas
- #5 Kansas State

Dear Seth Greenburg,
One win does not a season make.
Sincerely,
Alabama

WOOOOOOOOTTTTTTT!!!!

When can I begin my “I really hope Pitt isn’t the first #1 to lose to a 16 seed” talk?

I stare at brackets all day. was up until 1230 last night looking at them. blew through 2 alarms this morning.
looking at brackets again. i am transfixed by them, as if they were kate upton photos or something. i TAKE BRACKETS TO THE TOILET.
this is my favorite time of year.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
I’d be interested in knowing the difference between these two groups when it comes to actual tournament experience. I bet it evens out.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
I usually wait to do this until after my FF gets blown up by a N. Iowa team.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
Great job by John Beilen, no one thought this experienced Michigan team would do anything this season.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
Yeah, exact point I was going to make. Kenpom has experience stats based on class year as opposed to tourney experience. I’d take a group of soph’s that played in the Dance last year over a group of juniors and and seniors that have never been.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
I used to back in high school/college. I looked for the first time today to see where/when Pitt was playing, glanced at some of the awful teams that made it, and closed it.
/also kicks puppies
//not really

Ohio State has 2 freshman that play like seniors, and one other freshman that plays like he’s in 8th grade.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
Johnnies to the Elite 8! GO FIGHTING LAVINS!
/assumes Lav is the reason they’re rated so high
//how do you “measure” experience?
March 14th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
I assume UAB’s experience measurement doesn’t even pass the laugh test.
/Bilas’d
March 14th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
But you have Dallas Lauderdale to provide valuable experience
/he blows
//the refs just put Sullinger to the line again
March 14th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
On his site, it’s a metric that involves years in college weighted by minutes played. St. John’s is so high because they have nothing but seniors on the squad.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
I think experience needs to be qualified. Just because you have upperclassmen doesn’t mean they have the experience of playing in an NCAA tourney.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
To wit, Duke isn’t considered experienced by kenpom’s standards. Also, experience still needs some talent.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
i have St. John’s losing in most of my brackets.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Not bad when your 7th or 8th best guy is shooting 70% from the floor.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
In the 1st round?
March 14th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
lol.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
What’s everyone’s take on filling out 1 bracket or more than one?
March 14th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
what are you saying? that you have st. john’s winning the whole thing in one of your brackets?
filling out more than one bracket is downright cowardly.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
You should have 1 standard bracket. Plain and simple. None of this hedging bullshit.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I’m hoping for a post that explains how UF is a #2 seed. That, I think, was more confusing than any of the snubs or teams like UAB/VCU.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
How do you not love Dallas Lauderdale?
-He is the captain of the “Cities as Names” all-star team.
-He rocks the bald w/ beard combo
-He’s 6’8″ with a 7’6″ wingspan!
/sends your insult into the 10th row
March 14th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
I have a Cubs and Yankees bracket.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Agree.
No one can explain this. Unless the committee was trying to do a weird punish BYU for the suspension but give them a soft 2 seed.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
I have a Cubs and Yankees bracket.
One that’s a historic loser and one where you pay 3X the entry fee?
March 14th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
This is like saying you should only talk to one girl when you go out to the club. I want options at closing time baby!
March 14th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
I agree. It’s kind of a pussy move.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
David Lighty went to a title game!
March 14th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I limit myself to 2 brackets. One I create based on research and the other I pick on what I think will happen.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Wouldn’t both these attributes describe the Maple Leafs?
/snickers
March 14th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
You guys are way too professional about this bracket shit. I do it for the same reason i gamble…the action. I’d be much less interested in the tourney if my lone bracket had imploded by the Sweet Sixteen.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Ugh. No me gusta.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Pretty simple actually, and a definite trend the last few years…games played on Selection Sunday are meaningless. The committee gets done its work, and ignores those results. The evidence for this is overwhelming.
That’s not to say that Florida deserved a 2 seed even before losing yesterday…but it’s obvious that, for all intents and purposes, that game was meaningless.
Richmond’s 12 seed also backs this up.
Duke was probably the only team affected by yesterday, and I’m sure they just had a Duke/ND or perhaps a Duke/SD State swap planned…but it’s also quite possible that Duke could have got a #1 even with a loss yesterday.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I’m with Scarlet. I fill out the 5 maximum ones for ESPN’s tourney challenge. I’m competing with what, 15 million people? Why shouldn’t I have just as good a shot at the million bucks as they do?
In office pools, I only do one bracket though.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Fill out as many brackets as you want. It’s your money. Just don’t brag about picking every single upset as it happens.
Your bracket = your fantasy football team = your bad poker beat story.
/no one gives a shit’d
March 14th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Gene Smith even said as much, Jay. He said the outcome of the ACC tournament would not have vaulted UNC to the 1 line or dropped Duke to the 2 line.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Agreed…I can’t fathom that anyone would have a problem with people doing multiple brackets. Maybe with entering multiple brackets in the same pool, I can see that as kind of weak. But changing it up across pools…there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and antbody who thinks otherwise is just being silly.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
That’s what Gene Smith says. I find that stupid because if UNC had won, they would have won the regular season ACC and the conference tourney. Why the committee would make Duke a 1 after that is asinine. BUT Duke won so it’s a non-issue. It’s just the thought process of this committee that has me scratching my head.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
That’s what I thought we were talking about.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Well than call me silly.

Jersey, are you really out to prove that you are the best at picking these games? In my experience, the person who knows the least about basketball usually ends up winning.
Have fun with it dude.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
This chick cannot be serious…
/would still smash the shit out of that.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
It’s not just that, it’s a matter of honor. I’d rather have my whole bracket dead than be like, oh well, that kills bracket A but I’m still alive in bracket B. Just feels dirty.
March 14th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Last year I picked every upset in my bracket that I funded with my fantasy football winnings from my team The Fightin’ Norman Chad’s.
March 14th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Okay. Here’s something for you people to think about. I just want all of you to understand the gravity of the situation. The ODU Monarchs are set up to prove the point. Great senior leadership, great size, great defence and inside scoring, and decent outside shooting. When they get hot from the outside, they’re almost unbeatable. So EXPERIENCE will carry us past the Pitt Panthers…..after we demoralize the Bulldawgs and whomever else is unlucky enough to get in the way.
