Billy Packer & Charles Barkley Need to Get a Room
Billy Packer made these benign comments earlier this week about the NCAA tournament. Then, Charles Barkley went off on Packer last night: “stop being a jackass.” Then Billy Packer fired back this morning on Sports Radio 610 in Texas:
“I would have no problem debating Charles Barkley [on college basketball] … I have probably forgotten more about college basketball … than Charles Barkley ever knew existed.”
I love the idea of having Barkley in the studio during the NCAA tournament, but they’ll really need to balance him out with someone like a Packer, Jay Bilas or Doug Gottlieb. You know, an informed college basketball analyst who has been monitoring the entire season and is quick-witted enough to handle Barkley’s salvos.

Packer and Chuck alone in a room. The mind tries to avoid the nasty images.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
I’m very happy to see the likes of Chuck, Kenny, EJ, and Marv Albert invade the NCAA touney this year. Now if we could get Kevin Harlan to announce the final four, all will be right.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Still don’t know if I’m a Kevin Harlan guy or a Gus Johnson guy. Love both, but can’t pick a side.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Chuck can do no wrong in my book.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:27 PM
I don’t know much, but I do know this: somewhere, right now, Kevin Harlan is yelling excitedly about something.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
I will never not love Charles Barkley.

March 11th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
No need to pick sides. It’s alright to equally appreciate both talents.

Who was the person that decided to call Kemba Walker “honey badger?” There are maybe 100 people in the entire world that are badass enough to call themselves Honey Badger. Kemba Walker is not, nor will he ever be, one of them.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
We need in Chuck in politics, desperately.

March 11th, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Miami 53
UNC 34
!
But UNC just hit a 3 … cut it to 16. UNC can’t defend
March 11th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
I don’t get it.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
Met Barkley at St. Joe’s back when the Sixers used to practice there. Great guy and from what I hear, quick to buy rounds at local watering holes.

March 11th, 2011 at 1:35 PM
TBL, have you never heard Roy talk about how the ACC Tournament isn’t that important? They won a couple when their talent level was too good to lose but otherwise they generally exit early…this shouldn’t surprise anyone
March 11th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
That black cowboy that was talked about the other day/last week definitely is Honey Badger worthy.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
And viewers, warns Packer, will miss the old system of being switched to the hottest action. Recalling working regional sites where "none of the games were really good," he says the old way "enabled the product to never have to show them (widely) by going to exciting buzzer-beaters instead."But isn't it good the field expanded to 68 teams gives a few more bubble teams a chance to dance? "It's all about money and political correctness, not tournament quality. Are those new play-in games going to be better than what you can watch on ESPN tonight? No. Why play them?"
Weird, because Ive been told bloated playoffs = excitement.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
And this is where I hit SG in the back with a chair, and Me and Spence start pounding away at her (pun intended). Kemba Wlaker… Honey Badger. Make it stick!

March 11th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Not a surprise at all. He was the same way during the Big 8/12 tournaments.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
This…Roy clearly does not make the ACC tourney a priority whatsoever…been that way his entire stint at UNC.

why do you say that? his size? he was considered undersized even when he was playing, but that didn’t stop him from being a good to great player.
And since barkley is a power forward, I’m just going to use this as an excuse to bring tim duncan into the discussion. That man STILL doesn’t get the respect he deserves. The greatest Power Forward of all time. If you disagree, we can duel right now, good sir. I’ve got Jack Johnson and Tom O’Leary waiting for ya, right here.

UNC 9-0 run. Heels making a massive surge. Good game.

why do you say that? his size? he was considered undersized even when he was playing, but that didn’t stop him from being a good to great player.
Chuck in today’s league would be David West — an undersized PF that can get 18 ppg/8 rpg.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
Why do you let them keep shooting 3s. Holy fuck if I was the AD i’d fire Haith at the next timeout.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
Those NW sumbitches can shoot…would like to see them win this whole thing, poor bastards have never been to an NCAA Tournament
March 11th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
TBL: WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT THAT GAME.. THERE’S A MINUTE LEFT AND OSU IS DOWN!!!
March 11th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
what a disaster by Northwestern. airball? come on.
OSU has this …
March 11th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
Yes. Having Wofford in the tournament on the slim chance they may turn into George Mason, aka another also ran team who makes a run but doesn’t win anything at all, totally legitimizes the tourney and further makes the BCS look silly.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:48 PM

March 11th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Gonna be a pretty boring overtime if it’s just watching Sullinger shoot FTs
March 11th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Huge 3 for NW there, keeps them in this.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:54 PM

March 11th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
Sullinger wasn’t getting mugged, he was pushing off to get the rebound…weak fucking technical there
March 11th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
Really, a fucking technical there? Goddammit.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Ugh. College officiating. Nearly ruins the game year after year.

Ref, it’s overtime of the Big 10 Tournament. Let the guys play with some emotion.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:55 PM

March 11th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
miami turns that over.. wow. tied, :18 left
March 11th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
/go Bucks!
March 11th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Yes, his size. Guys are just bigger now. By all accounts, Barkley is nowhere near the 6’6 he was listed at. More like 6’3 or 4. I don’t know who he could defend or keep away from the rim for rebounds. His skills are there, but I think his size nowadays is too big of an obstacle for guy who made his living in the paint. Too many 6’10 and above’s now.
Agreed on Duncan. No fight here.
/stands beside Kaiser, puts up dukes
March 11th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
What a gutsy pass there by NC. Almost too late.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
Oh Miami…fitting to lose like this after that win yesterday, the Universe always evens out
March 11th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
I thought Miami stills had fouls to give – for Marshall’s drive
March 11th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
The sheer lack of basketball IQ. Just staggering. What a waste of a team.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
Huh, Roy looks excited…hasn’t dawned on him yet that this means they have to play another one of these tomorrow
March 11th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
Maybe they did use all their fouls already
March 11th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
DAMNIT.
There needs to be MMOD for conference tourneys. I feel left out in the dark here. All I’ve got in a photo stream for hockey.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
I like the pass. It’s the third or fourth time in the past couple days I’ve seen a big bucket scored because a guy comes over way too late to help, leaving an open man at the bucket.
/Gary McGhee’d
If you can’t impact the play, stay home on your man, or else go before the drive so that there is time for rotation. You can’t leave a guy under the basket wide open.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
Dayton has some good non-conf wins, some underachieving talent, and a bad stretch during conf play. I think they’d be a tough NCAA out
/kiss of death, they’re going to lose next game
March 11th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
I’d be willing to bet there were a lot bigger PF’s in Barkley’s day than there are now. Not too mention the fact that teams nowadays play with one post and they’ve moved their PF to the perimeter. Guys like Aldridge, D West, anyone from Orlando, Bosh, Jamison, etc. If anything I would expect Barkley’s rebounding numbers to go up.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
No ESPN3?
Might have to make due with Georgia/Alabama until Illinois/Michigan tip off…what I really should do is just leave the office and find a real TV
March 11th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
I know everyone is talking about live games, but…
…this overused “forgotten more than you know” line bugs the hell out of me. Forgetting stuff is not impressive.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
Well if that’s true, Barkley would have to follow his man outside correct? Who’s he guarding? Certainly he’s not playing center. Like you say, I think the game has changed and guys like him would not be as effective IMO.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
No way, they’re going to go far for my Flyers alumni friend.
/RIP Lunny
March 11th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
I disagree. If you are better, you make the other team adjust to you. If they move their PF outside, and Barkley goes off inside, they’ll have to adjust.
/Beli-checked
March 11th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
It’s the same position as Kevin Love. Saying a guy that once averaged 15 rpg would all of a sudden only get 8 (lowest of his career) is ridiculous.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:16 PM
I love the fact that the MMOD app is free this year. My GPA, be damned.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Chuck is awesome at everything except anything that involves not talking about basketball.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
Not a big DJ Gallo fan (okay I REALLY dislike him), but I thought this was funny, and that maybe there is a need for an in depth “technology and athletes” feature.

March 11th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
Dejaun Blair is short and stumpy, and still manages an 18+ Rebound rate, inline with Barkley’s entire career.
Barkley is much more skilled on offense and more athletic. He’d do just fine today.
Also, conditioning/nutrition is more important and a focus today, even compared to just 15 years ago. Barkley would be in better shape, etc.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
No team in the NBA today adjusts for Charles Barkley. Again, who does he guard? Maybe I’m forgetting someone, but who out there would you compare him to?
March 11th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Blair is a good comparison. Even though he has a few inches and 30 lbs or so on Chuck, it’s in the same ballpark. Still think Chuck takes a huge dropoff though…
March 11th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Paul Millsap is 6-7 and skinny as hell. And he still averaged almost 9rpg in 30mpg two years ago.
I think you really forget how good Barkley was.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
mmmmmm no
March 11th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
I think he’d be better without having to play against teams with elite centers and PF’s. He went against teams that featured Ewing, Olajuwon, Robinson, Mourning, Mutombo, Malone, etc. Who are the elite bigs today other than Dwight?
March 11th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
Barkley was a really good player. That’s like people not taking Stephen Curry because he didn’t have a true position. Invent an offensive role for him, shield him on defense. If anything, I think the forward role has become less defined recently, so you can put Barkley wherever you want, and since zones are allowed, he’d go crazy rebounding and be protected on defense.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
Yeah, maybe I’m sleeping on Charles a bit. There may not be as many elite centers, but look at how big everyone on the front lines are. Guys are just bigger and more athletic now and can move outside like Bosh, Pau, Dirk, etc. Maybe he does find a place somewhere though. There’s always Artest for him to guard.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:39 PM
You’re overrating the need to be tall to rebound. More about strength and positioning.
Brooke Lopez and Andrea Bargnani are both 7′+ and both suck at rebounding.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
I’m not saying it’s a need, just a fact that guys are bigger now. Look at this list. Brand might be shortest at legit 6’8.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
I think you underestimate both Barkley’s size and his athleticism.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
Here are the leaders in 1991. Shortest guy is ‘Nique at 6’7. Of course he was an athletic freak.
1. David Robinson*-SAS 13.0
2. Dennis Rodman-DET 12.5
3. Charles Oakley-NYK 12.1
4. Karl Malone*-UTA 11.8
5. Patrick Ewing*-NYK 11.2
6. Brad Daugherty-CLE 10.9
7. Robert Parish*-BOS 10.6
8. Benoit Benjamin-TOT 10.3
9. Otis Thorpe-HOU 10.3
10. Derrick Coleman-NJN 10.3
11. Blair Rasmussen-DEN 9.7
12. Buck Williams-POR 9.4
13. Dominique Wilkins*-ATL 9.0
14. Bill Laimbeer-DET 9.0
15. James Donaldson-DAL 8.9
16. Lionel Simmons-SAC 8.8
17. Kevin Willis-ATL 8.8
18. Larry Smith-HOU 8.8
19. Larry Nance-CLE 8.6
20. Horace Grant-CHI 8.4
March 11th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
Dude is 6’4 by all accounts. I don’t know what else to tell you.
…
Now on that you may be right.
#8 on that list is funny.
March 11th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
Shouldn’t Charles be around 10th on that list?
March 11th, 2011 at 3:06 PM
Guess he didn’t have enough games to qualify, but yeah he should be around there.
Only played 67 that season.
March 11th, 2011 at 3:08 PM
There’s more to size than just height. They guy has a huge ass and knew what to do with it to get leverage on the taller players he was up against. Very similar to the way Love is built.
