Jim Tressel’s Self-Defense is Implausible and Dishonest
Jim Tressel received emails in April 2010 notifying him OSU players committed NCAA violations. He did not report the violations. He signed a document falsely affirming he reported knowledge of violations. He lied. He lied to keep pivotal players on the field for the 2010 season. He feigned ignorance when the violations were publicly revealed in December. He only admitted his dishonesty when caught out in January. He tried to defend himself last night and failed miserably.
Tressel offered the confidentiality defense. The lawyer did ask Tressel to keep the information confidential (because his actions could get him disbarred) but in the second email, two weeks after the first one! This was someone asking him to do something versus obligations in his contract. Even if this promise of confidentiality was binding, Tressel knew about the violations for two weeks before it went into effect. He had two weeks to act without guilt and did nothing. There was no point keeping the information “confidential” anyway as his university email account is on the public record.
Tressel could have reported the violations without revealing his source. He could have tipped off the compliance staff to investigate it. His own university offers him the opportunity to report potential violations anonymously. There’s also the FERPA law schools are so happy to use when its to their benefit. Tressel could have suspended the players for undisclosed violations indefinitely and not publicly disclosed why.
Besides being profoundly convenient, Tressel’s “confidentiality” was also not entirely valid. Not sure what “pounding these guys” means, but the emails imply he spoke to players about it and had them disassociate with Rife. He was confidential, in situations where his success would be adversely affected.
Tressel’s claims he did not want to reveal an impending investigation might be valid, but why feign ignorance and keep the fact you had information quiet after the investigation became public knowledge?
Jim Tressel covered up NCAA violations. He lied about it multiple times. Caught out, he’s lying to protect his own lying. This story isn’t convoluted. It needs no nuance. Jim Tressel was wrong. He made a bad, selfish decision to serve his own ends. He was caught. His reputation for and purported track record of integrity are irrelevant. Quoting the great Albus Dumbledore: “It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
The most telling quip from the press conference was E. Gordon Gee’s “I hope he doesn’t dismiss me” joke. Tressel makes three times as much as his supposed bosses. Ohio State football brings in revenue. It gives the university a national profile. It keeps both Gee and Gene Smith among the highest paid at their respective professions in the country. They are powerless and grasped to the teat. The weak, self-imposed punishment reflected that. Hopefully, the NCAA shows a bit more fortitude.

Nice post duffy!! Tressel pulled the classic “I’m not going to admit I was wrong but I’ll apologize to anyone I might have let down” routine!!
Gee is pitiful!!

Is ‘caught out’ a common phrase or colloquialism?

Is it true Gordon Gee is the heir to the Fundee’s fortune?

Nice write up Duffy. Can’t wait for the NCAA bend over the program USC style.
Nicely done was well.

So, what crime was committed? Did someone get a DUI, or steal something, or kill someone? Just trying to figure out why this is being treated like the worst offense in the history of college sports.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
I’m happy I’m not the only one who was intrigued by Tressel’s use of that phrase.

/sweet double burn!!
March 9th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
So the head coach is suspended 2 games, the players are suspended 5 games and all that’s left is to find out what garish tatts caused all this trouble.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
Not gonna happen.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
Not likely. At worst Vest is suspended for a couple more games, vacated wins and a 1 year post season ban.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
This is great. It also makes me think about many a night since this past July.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Is ‘caught out’ a common phrase or colloquialism?
It’s a common phrase people use when they are standing on a line and have to do something that requires getting out of said line. To wit, “I was standing on line at the grocery store and almost reached the register but I got caught out when I remembered that I also needed mile.”
March 9th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
This is the biggest story in college football history. Possibly the biggest story in organized sports history.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
All of this over a bunch of tattoos. Hysterical.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
OSU suspended Jimmy The Cheat 2 games, the NCAA process will run its course over the next 6-18 months and then they’ll likely add more to the punishment.
As far as I know the NCAA investigation of the players is complete, pending an appeal of the punishment.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
milk. It was a milk that I needed when I was standing on line and got cught out. Dammit. I’ll never get discovered this way

I was really using it more to build empathy for our shared peeve but you can see it how you will. I, however, will be over in the corner crying
March 9th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
He didn’t tell the NCAA his players got tattoos!!!! He’s the most immoral man alive!!!
March 9th, 2011 at 2:39 PM
Let me clarify, I don’t think they will get the same punishment, but this:
is what is going to bring the hammer from the NCAA. 1 year postseason ban, maybe lose few scholarships and an extended suspension would not surprise me.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
Remember when Dez Bryant got suspended for nearly an entire season for lying to NCAA investigators? This false prophet of integrity is getting off easy…no one should want to watch their games against Akron and Toledo anyhow and now he doesn’t have to

The NCAA hasnt ruled on Tressel yet.
Touche. Although, I’d be shocked if they suspended him for a year. Wouldn’t you?
March 9th, 2011 at 2:46 PM
People need to stop saying Tressel got off easy. The NCAA investigation hasn’t even begun (or just got under way). This is a preemptive strike, but it’s one that looks really weak. They tried to fine him a big number and only take him out of a two games that are never in doubt. I think this will back fire.

Tressel wasn’t interviewed by the NCAA. OSU officials were.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Stoops
March 9th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Tressel was never directly interviewed by investigators, therefore he never had a chance to lie to them. FWIW.
Look, the guy made a mistake, he’s paying for it. Don’t try to tell me that 95% of D1 coaches wouldn’t have the same exact thing.
I actually think there is a chance that Tressel is covering for the University and taking the hit. When a reporter asked if he showed the emails to anyone else, he started to answer “yes” and was cut off by Gene Smith. Is it possible that Jimmy is throwing himself under the bus in order to avoid a lack of institutional control charge against the University as a whole?

I would be too, but I have a feeling that OSU escapes, more or less, on this one. We will not see a USC level pillaging by the NCAA. They might tweak the penalties a bit, but even if they do, well having scholarship restrictions didn’t exactly hurt Kiffin in recruiting this year.

March 9th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
They shouldn’t get what USC got. This is much smaller. I would think Tressel will get hit with failure to maintain an environment of compliance and will get prospect visits docked and he may get 1-2 more games. Those games may come for the 2012 season, but I would think he would get a few more.

Settle down, dude. I believe you said this morning that you were “naive” in your beliefs on Tressel. I could look it up…but I don’t want to.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
He sent a signed letter to the compliance office contradicting know fact. Sure they weren’t actively investigating him at the time, but it’s the same offense.
They’ll probably just stack this on the other 375 self-reported violations, the testimonies from former players regarding agent payments, free cars, no-show jobs, etc. and slap his wrist with this gay-ass 2 game suspension.
March 9th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
Osu worked with a consulting agency who handles these cases to help determine their self imposed punishment. I would assume they took everything in account when they settled on 2 games 250k. Go in low initallt let the NCAA impose additional punishment. I would bet it’s 3-5 games total (players reduced to 3 games) as well as a 3 yr probation for the program. Maybe 1yr postseason ban, no vacated season. Just my guess
March 9th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
Isn’t the potential bigger problem/portal to bigger problems the use of free cars by the young Mister Pryor?

March 9th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
He lied in a sense that he withheld information (then eventually self reported it). But withholding information and lying to NCAA investigators during an investigation are two different things.
Its the difference between lying to the cops, and lying under oath in court.
Both are bad, one is worse.

March 9th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Or we can admit that trying to run effective developmental teams/leagues for major professional sports within the college system is retarded and diminishes the players ability to be a.) a true student and b.) reach their full athletic potential.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Do people who root for a rapist qb have any room to call someone a dirtbag?
It’s situational. Are they rooting for him while he rapes or are they rooting for him as a football player? For Steelers fans it’s both
March 9th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
because look at all of you…you’re all giddy as shit that OSU got punished.
I think the only people here who are actually giddy are Duffy and, if he’s still stalking about, Maggs. You guys are getting off relatively easy. You might have a down year next year (might) but this will not be a body blow to the program. Get some perspective on this.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
My biggest issue with Tressel and these emails is that the “attorney” does not seem connected to any investigation and was simply passing along some “I know something you don’t know” to attempt to have a dialog with his beloved head of tOSU football. He obviously isn’t a State’s or US attorney, and seemed to ask for confidentiality to cover his own ass. In a later email, he says he spoke with Riffe, but in what capacity? I gather this guy is more along the lines of a defense attorney. Hell, what attorney would contact him that way knowing that the emails were a matter of public record, leading me to think he was simply excited to interact with Tressel.
The other problem I have with this are Tressel’s odd responses, as if he was brushing the guy off, or trying to push it aside. I’ve had email contacts with Tressel before and they definitely didn’t come off as if they were written by a 7th grade girl, so I’m not sure what else to make of them.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
i said tressel himself was naive. i thought he was a nice guy because of his philanthropy and the way he treats his players, but apparently, he’s just some old fuddy duddy that the game has passed by both on and off the field.
i wasn’t naive…i was plain wrong. and i fucking hate being wrong about things i love.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:02 PM

Tressel is just like any other coach that puts winning above all else. Doesn’t make him a bad guy at all. He made a mistake knowingly and will be punished for it.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
Sure, this proves that Tressel isn’t anywhere near squeaky clean. But lets stop acting like this makes him the scummiest scum of a coach ever in the history of coaching.
On a scale of the shady things a coach can do, this is nowhere near the top.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
Yeah, that was exactly what I wanted to say, but couldn’t think of it.
Just because the coach is suspended for two games, doesn’t mean it’ll change anything. Until college football becomes the minor league system for football, nothing is going to change.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:06 PM
All this means is that Ferentz is the best coach in the conference now. Guy managed to have a player sell drugs for him and nothing happened to our program. Pretty sure Kirk cleared double his salary on selling that poison, too.

I agree.. I think the whole thing is silly. Tattoos man! At the same time, I think it’d be bullshit for the NCAA to come down hard on Dez Bryant and not on Tressel would be hypocritical, yet not surprising. Scarlet’s argument of “one is bad, the other is worse” is flimsy at best. Signing your name to something you know not to be true is no different than lying to their faces.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:08 PM
im sure more is yet to come.
i mean, you have to figure the suspended players are dunzo. and this hurts his ability to recruit big time.
That would be the worst case scenario, but unless they can prove the players worked with Tressel on a coverup, I just can’t see this getting much worse. I feel like for appearances the NCAA will add a little to the penalties. But this is not and will not be a devestating blow to the program.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:09 PM
It’s a separate issue… I believe the appeal process has already been completed

March 9th, 2011 at 3:10 PM
Really? What, do you know something I don’t know? That the NCAA doesn’t know? That the FBI doesn’t know? That some redneck radio host in Huntsville doesn’t even know?
Yeah, they wrapped that Reggie Bush thing up real quick didn’t they? Someone will talk. They always do.

March 9th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
About that last post — the site effed that up with the quote, not me. Spencer is still kind of a douche.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
Won’t hurt tress recruiting at all…especially with his “I did it to protect my kids” routine. He basically said he was willing to sacrifice NCAA punishment to protect them.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:12 PM
Scarlet — my apologies. Sit corrected.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:12 PM
I think Mark Richt is about as good of a man as there is in CFB, but I’m sure he has some dirt on him. All coaches do.

March 9th, 2011 at 3:12 PM
tressel built his entire recruiting pitch on family and integrity. might as well take a dump on that.
I’m sure the history of Ohio State as a football program and that it is consistently a ranked team and turns out a number of NFL draft picks each year also helps in the recruiting pitch. Stop making me praise your fucking team.

Oh.. nothing really… I took some huge liberties based on some stories I’ve heard from some female friends of mine who worked in the Athletic dept. Evidently he’s that creepy old guy who has no qualms about hitting on much younger coeds. It was in reference to a comment in the Roundup about all coaches being dirty. So naturally I went to Bielema banging a hooker.

March 9th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Let’s face it, Tressel is turning into the football equivalent of Calipari.
That’s comedy gold. Either I’ve missed a whole bunch of shit about Tressel or you’ve never really read about Teflon John

March 9th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
Little to no effect on recruiting, prolly none in Ohio IMO
March 9th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
The big radio debate is what round will they lose in – the Sweet 16 or the Elite 8. No one in town even expects/hopes for the final four.
Hell, even PSU has been to the Final Four more recently.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
So if they vacate the 2010 wins, does that mean Michigan can pretend they won?
March 9th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
He was lying to protect his players. It was for the children! All for the children!
Seriously though, you are overreacting. It wasn’t some personal morality or character issue with Tressel. In other words, he wasn’t covering up a personal wrongdoing. He was covering up for his players.
And in the neighborhoods most recruits big-time recruits come from, snitches get stitches. He will probably be even more revered for keeping his mouth shut.

March 9th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
Tressel’s recruiting pitch is Ohio State and playing for Ohio State. He’ll be fine.
Objectively, I think he should be fired. I don’t know what the justification for keeping him is. Would fire Pearl too.
Michigan fan wise I want him to stay so Hoke can beat him a few times on the way out. I don’t want him leaving with that great of a record.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:17 PM

On the contrary. It shows JT is willing to sacrifice himself and the university is willing to overlook a lot for the good of the program and talent. Seems like this is far from the first and likely not the last time. It’s just “adversity.”
Same goes on elsewhere, for sure.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:18 PM
really? you don’t think that tressel heard about this and said “holy shit, we’re gonna lose TP and boom and devier? nobody will hear about this.”

The difference is one side has proof and the other doesn’t. I know it sucks to see Cam get off, but there is no proof (yet) that he knew about the money. Of course any sane person knows that he was aware of it, but it’s not about what you know, it’s about what you can prove.

March 9th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
Look, Tressel’s a good coach. He won a BCS crystal football. Bad coaches don’t even know which game officials to pay off or when. Tressel timed it perfectly and it ended up making all the difference.

Nice. I was trying to squeeze in a joke about that bullshit PI call, but you crafted it perfectly.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
I agree with this. The fact that it was the star player(s) is a big deal in my opinion. My assumption (and it is purely an assumption) is that Tressel knew the 2010 Buckeyes were a true national title contender. He didn’t want to fuck that up.

I would think as long as Ohio has fertile high school talent, they probably don’t have to try too too hard to get players to play for them in addition to their wealth of NFL talent they produce. Of all the big football states, I’d be hard pressed to find one where there isn’t much, if any in state competition.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
it’ll be nice to have a program full of ak-toting thugs, which the NCAA apparently thinks is fine. BUT THEY BETTER HAVE RECEIPTS FOR THOSE TATTOOS!!!

I shit you not, on SMU message boards, it has been asserted often in the past 10 years that to make our team better, we should “recruit more thug players”.
The socio-ethnic ramifications of such a statement I leave to the reader to decide.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
I’ve met Mark and he spoke at a class of mine at UGA, but even I thought the piece was totally unnecessary. Everything he wrote shouldn’t be dismissed, because the facade of “The Senator” is now gone, but it seemed as though he was enjoying the take down, and that’s not what journalism should be about.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
“recruit more thug players”
Well obviously they were referring to Asians.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
also, lets not forgetting players texting their GF’s about what time it is…and what time their death will be.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
It’s not even about the tattoos anymore, Spencer. That ship sailed. Behind them except for sitting out the suspensions.
This is entirely about the coach being too stupid/arrogant/insert your adjective here to do the right/smart thing and report this before the season, when he found out. This is about a cover-up and lying and…basically being sleazy. Complaining about the rule is diverting attention from the actual violation being punished here.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Well obviously they were referring to Asians.
We are recruiting in California more….
March 9th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
There are a couple mitigating factors.
1) Track Record. Like it or not, the record shows Tressel has personally been about as clean as it gets throughout his tenure at Ohio State. He has also been a very successful coach. If either one of these things were untrue, his job would be in danger.
2)Seriousness of the infractions he was “covering up”. If he were withholding information about drugs, rape, or any other felony he would be a goner.
This is not meant to defend his actions. Just trying to explain why he will not be fired.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Exactly. This isn’t about the crime/violation…it’s about the cover up.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
it wouldn’t be a problem if the tattoo thing wasn’t a problem, how don’t you see that? again…if these players were allowed to trade things they personally own, tressel wouldn’t be covering up shit.
i understand what this is about, i don’t compliance advice from a fan of a program that’s currently on probation themselves.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
And Duffy’s piece was fine, but pretty repetitive with everything else that’s out there. Not sure this could be considered a fresh take (and I like Duffy). But when you write a column (and this is a column), shouldn’t you traverse some new ground?
March 9th, 2011 at 3:32 PM

/NIT doesnt count, except for 65th (69th) place
March 9th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
What is new to cover here, though?
March 9th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
Since 2000, Ohio State has reported to the NCAA more than 375 violations — the most of any of the 69 Football Bowl Subdivision schools that provided documents to The Dispatch through public-records requests. Most infractions were minor — a coach called a recruit too many times, for example. Others, however, left athletes benched, fined or at least embarrassed.
Minor violations, yes, but 375?!?!? And that article was written in May, 2009, so you can safely up that number to 400+ by adding the 2009 and 2010 seasons/recruiting time.
Not sure if he is “as clean as it gets”.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
clean enough not to be on probation…like michigan currently is.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
I’ve seen no shortage of 6 pieces that have fresh takes. This wasn’t one of them. Don’t just write something to write something – if anything, just excerpt those other takes.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
But Tressel KNEW it was a problem and chose to cover it up. Stupid rule or not, Tressel knew the rule and therefore knew what he was doing.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
What were the fresh takes?
March 9th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
and i never once debated that. not once.
i have a problem with the issue in the first place. this is like getting thrown in jail for telling the officer you were going 35 when you were really going 45.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
Keep deflecting the conversation. What do you think is ultimately a worse violation: too much practice time or covering up an infraction and lying about it? Seriously.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
it wouldn’t be a problem if the tattoo thing wasn’t a problem, how don’t you see that? again…if these players were allowed to trade things they personally own, tressel wouldn’t be covering up shit.
Well, if it wasn’t a problem to run people over with your car Lawrence Phillips would still be dominating pick-up football games instead of in prison…
March 9th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
Spencer, I know you hate the rule, but the above comment is spot on. Just like I was pissed when AJ was suspended, he knew he shouldn’t sell his jersey, yet he did it anyway. Tressel knew this was wrong, yet he did it anyway.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
both are essentially the same thing. rich rod was covering up the fact he practiced too long, which actually has an impact on the field.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
This really looks bad because it’s just happening now, but it will not do any long term damage to the program. Does anyone really think that these families really trust Urban Meyer, Les Miles, or Nick Saban? Or do you think that they just see those guys as a way to get their kids into the NFL? Because that’s the ONLY thing that big time recruits care about. I’ve said it before…if you are a fan of a perennial NC contender, you’re a fan of a program that constantly bends and sometimes breaks NCAA rules.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
Thanks for proving my argument. Tressel has so much integrity and respect for the rule of law, he has SELF REPORTED 375 violations.
Let’s focus on this section of your quote…
Most infractions were minor, and the ones that were were committed by athletes, who were in turn punished for those actions.
None of those infractions were a personal violation committed by Jimmy T himself. No DUIs. No domestic abuse. Hell, I doubt the guy has ever even had a speeding ticket.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
and i never said anything to the contrary. tressel SHOULD get in trouble…all i was saying is that the incident that started this whole kerfuffle is tat-gate, which WAS total, utter bullshit.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
ones that weren’t were committed by atheletes*

March 9th, 2011 at 3:42 PM

wtf? how does that relate to what we’re talking about in the slightest?
dude, just fucking around, but what I meant was, it is against the rules to trade your shit for tattoos. Saying he wouldn’t have had to cover it up if the rule didn’t exist is fucking stupid.

That made me laugh too – it was a self-imposed violation of a different kind.
My complaint with Tressel is that, no matter where he is, he commits violations and his “key” players commit major violations. Clarett, T. Smith, Pryor, Holmes, Ray Isaac (at YSU) all have booster/agent/illegal benefits attached to them.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
11th in the NCAA in scoring last year (38.77 ppg).
great, one year. that still doesnt account for the offensive rapes over the years.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
and I thought you OSU guys always swallowed….
March 9th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
Not a good argument, Spencer. That’s the equivalent of saying if weed was legal, then weed dealers wouldn’t be guilty of distribution of a controlled substance. “LOL TATTOOS” similarly doesn’t hold much water.
What you really seem to take issue with is the players being prohibited from profiting from their athletic endeavors while amateurs (because they’re amateur athletes they’re not allowed to profit from memorabilia, autographs, etc. while an amateur – after they leave, do whatever you want). That’s a broader philosophical argument that’s been ongoing at TBL for some time.
But let’s not overthink the situation here: Tressel knew the amateur/eligiblity rules, the players should have known, and everyone covered up the pertinent facts until forced to disclose them by an outside investigation. This isn’t about tattoos.
Well, unless the tattoos were of something ridiculous, like Wilford Brimley.

Well, duh. What booster is gonna pay the longsnapper?
March 9th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
Haven’t seen it mentioned here much, but this is pretty analogous to Pearl’s situation in Knoxville. Granted I think it is a bit shadier because it had a direct impact during the season which was the intent of the deception, where Pearl was deceptive because it impacted recruiting. Different animals, but kind of the same issue in the grand scheme of things.
Bottom line: Shit like this happens everywhere, Tressel just got caught. Don’t be so naive.
March 9th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
my favorite part of the pearl saga was when the investigator showed him a pic of him, aaron craft and his wife at a bbq at his house and he said he never saw any of it before.
March 9th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
Yeah, I mean he was outright retarded about it, no question, and he deserves flack for that. That being said, it was a fucking BBQ. ESPN has acted like he raped 10 babies and then burned the American Flag. Yeah he lied to the NCAA about a secondary violation. Big fucking whoop.
March 9th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
Also, Jim Calhoun of ESPN’s buttbuddy UConn program actually does get suspended by the NCAA for violations and it gets about 30 seconds of airtime, yet every time UT plays on ESPN they talk about Bruce Pearl for about half of the telecast. It’s absurd.
March 9th, 2011 at 4:09 PM

Yeah it’s frustrating. I’m used to it though unfortunately.

e lied about it multiple times. Caught out, he’s lying to protect his own lying. This story isn’t convoluted. It needs no nuance. Jim Tressel was wrong. He made a bad, selfish decision to serve his own ends. He was caught.
This right here. I’ve never felt so dirty watching a non politician speak. Great post Duffy.

As an academic, Gordon Gee offends me on numerous levels. He’s a prostitute in a bow tie, and if I were a faculty member at OSU, I wouldn’t trust a thing he tells me or any of my academic colleagues. It’s clear who’s steering the ship, and it isn’t Academic Affairs. The press conference charade was a calculated insult to anyone with a fully-developed brain stem. I felt like I needed a shower after watching it.
And as a *tattooed* academic (fully sleeved, thank you), the tattoos at the heart of this scandal offend me as well–weak, amateurish, and cliche. Not a good example of the art.

I just hope that I can have some pride restored by Jim, the team, and the University; most especially in 262 days, on the football field, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

I understand that-I’m not naive. But you don’t cede institutional control to the athletic department as a result. That’s what the whole “lack on institutional oversight” thing means. When a coach and AD are paid 10x more than a faculty member, and they wriggle off the hook for behavior that gets a faculty member fired, then I look at the president and wonder what he sees OSU as–a university or an athletic league that offers a few classes here and there.

His star players get enough speeding tickets, usually in cars they dont own.
But week long out of state test drives are pretty standard these days.
