Jalen Rose Never Liked Duke
“The Fab Five” debuts on ESPN this Sunday. (Why is it separate from the 30 For 30 series?) With clips being shown to drum up some publicity for the documentary, we get soundbites like ESPN’s Jalen Rose calling black kids at Duke in the 1990′s “Uncle Toms.”
“For me, Duke was personal. I hated Duke. And I hated everything I felt Duke stood for. Schools like Duke didn’t recruit players like me. I felt like they only recruited black players that were Uncle Toms.”
Rose clarified that it was how he felt as an 18-year-old. Even though he didn’t voice those words in front of a camera until recently.
“Well, certain schools recruit a typical kind of player whether the world admits it or not. And Duke is one of those schools,” he said. “They recruit black players from polished families, accomplished families. And that’s fine. That’s okay. But when you’re an inner-city kid playing in a public school league, you know that certain schools aren’t going to recruit you. That’s one. And I’m okay with it. That’s how I felt as an 18-year-old kid.”
Don’t worry, Jalen. Lots of people hate Duke.
As for the documentary, its more than a little disappointing that Chris Webber declined participating. Not only was he the biggest star, but he also has become a great NBA commenter. What’s really amazing is that we’re still talking about these players and games that don’t exist. Heck, I’ve already forgotten who Terrelle Pryor is.

Didn’t simmons explain this? I feel like he did.

The Fab Five and the Larry Johnson UNLV teams are easily my top two favorites of all time.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
What’s wrong with any of this?
My god Mike Freeman of CBS is annoying. He made this out to be the worst thing he’d ever heard. I don’t know why anyone would follow him on Twitter.

Really looking forward to this one. Two Escobars potential.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
The irony of his “Uncle Tom” comments is that C-Webb was EXACTLY the kind of black player Duke typically recruits, in fact I think Duke was his 2nd choice. He went to the same high school as Battier for crying out loud.

March 8th, 2011 at 4:54 PM
Yup. “Detroit” Country Day. Why is Detroit in the name of the school when it’s in the richest suburb? Doesn’t make sense to me.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:55 PM
Somehow every time I see Juwan Howard on the Heat bench I’m surprised all over again that he’s still in the league
March 8th, 2011 at 4:55 PM
Detroit Country Day represent.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
Did you go to DCD? My high school used to play them every year in soccer.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
Yeah. It had something to do with the fact that they weren’t going to be able to complete it on time, so they took on another doc to fill the required 30 and pushed this one back.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
Nolan Richardson’s “40 Minutes of Hell” from about ’89-95 were money.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:56 PM
Whoa, whoa, whoa… we’re gonna need a 20 second timeout here.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
Rose is from an accomplished family. Was Rose that poor growing up? Did they not get child support? His biological dad was the #1 pick in the entire NBA draft (I think). Not that much money back then but still.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
That’s fucking funny. Brilliant SC. Brilliant.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
Why is it ironic if it was Rose who said it and not Webber?
March 8th, 2011 at 4:58 PM
I was a big fan of that national championship team when I was a kid. Scotty Thurman should’ve been a star!
March 8th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
But Rose was reppin’ the D, while Webber was off gettin’ his fancy private school education.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
Jalen is excellent on ESPN, far superior to the work of Jay Williams.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
Detroit Country Day
What a stupid name for a school…as opposed to Detroit City Night???
March 8th, 2011 at 5:02 PM
Money isn’t the only factor of what Rose said, he was saying the type of player/attitude. And he said this when he was an 18 year old.
Definitely the UNLV teams. Also liked the Tim Duncan Wake teams with Rusty Larue.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:03 PM
Yes…and they are going to continue to use the 30for30 brand for future docs.
They also pushed the Bartman doc back, and it will stand on its own as well.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:04 PM
Yes. Jay Williams is terrible on ESPN.
Rose never met his father. I don’t think he grew up well off at all. I read the Fab Five years ago and I believe that while Webber came from a privileged background Rose did not.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:07 PM
I was just overly supporting Jalen, I actually don’t mind Jay Williams.

Rose never did meet his father. Only talked to him on the phone a few times.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:09 PM
He went to the same high school as Duffy for crying out loud.
/no idea if that’s true or not
March 8th, 2011 at 5:10 PM
yeah, Scotty screwed up leaving early for the draft. He came back to the UA this year and is an assistant.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:12 PM
So many great teams from that era. College bb was so much better back then. Games were faster paced and teams could score in so many ways. Guys just stuck around longer, even the big men. Looking back it’s amazing that guys like Shaq played 3 years of college. It seemed almost every good team had at least 1 guy 6’10″ or taller, and a lot of teams had more than one. Nowadays your average college big man is built like DeJuan Blair and you see a lot more 60-55 slugfests.
/end rant.

March 8th, 2011 at 5:14 PM
It’s ironic b/c Webber was just as much an “Uncle Tom” (by his definition) as Grant Hill and yet he and Rose were best friends and great teammates. It’s ok we all say and think dumb $hit at 18.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:15 PM
Understandable. I think Jalen is great. Jay Williams needs to at least attempt to be unbiased.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:17 PM
Fuck Detroit Country Day.
/killed my HS in basketball state finals in 95 (Shane Battier and Chris Weber’s brothers were on the team)

I find this sentence funny in a ver ydorky way because DeJuan Blair actually played in a relatively up-tempo era for Big East basketball. 6 fouls FTL!

Webbers career has always been suck a disappointment to me. He was such a dominant force in college. I thought he was going to be one of the greatest power forwards of all time and win a ton of championships. I always thought he was not aggressive enough and disappeared a lot in big games. I honestly thought his career arc was going to be kind of how KG’s has been.

Agreed, would have preferred another 5 shots of Bill Wennington’s beard…yet another player who didn’t look a day under 30, when 1983 Chris Mullen passes for looking youthful it was an odd decade indeed
March 8th, 2011 at 5:23 PM
I remember when Webber was a Bullet I’d always hope he missed his first 3PA of the game because if he made it he’d keep shooting them.

Also pretty shitty of them not to include any Providence photos with God Shammgod in there…greatest athlete name ever

Someone said it here before.. but Pitt is what Wisconsin would look like if WI had black players. Not a whole lot of difference in terms of style of play. They are kind of the exception to the rule in the BigEast.

What a joke he was as a Bullet. They had sick talent on that team. Webber, Howard and a young Rasheed Wallace. Webber and Wallace were complete headcases at that time of their careers.

“Country Day” is a style of education. There are a lot of them throughout the U.S. I myself attended Kentucky Country Day grades 5-8.

I’m still angry they got of rid of the fantastic duo of Chris Webber and Gary Payton on NBAtv. That was unintentional comedy galore.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:35 PM
I’ll never forget them playing an LSU team that was full of athletes top to bottom and had was 28-5 coming into the game in the Sweet 16 and the score being 22-14 at the half…couldn’t keep from just laughing out loud, the game was never really close the rest of the way
I really think that had they met anybody other than Michigan State they would have become the worst national champion ever the way they were locking people down
March 8th, 2011 at 5:39 PM

Yeah, I’m pretty sure the score at the half of the MSU game was something like 22-19. Awful. Just Awful. So glad Bennett retired/quit. That style of play was painful to watch.
/Also, Bo is a much funnier interview
March 8th, 2011 at 5:45 PM
I was in attendance for Bennett’s last game at UW-Green Bay; it was vs. Purdue in the 95 tourney. Think the final was 49-47 or something like that. It was the ugliest basketball game I have ever witnessed in person, even if it was a close game down to the wire.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:49 PM
Think the final was 49-47 or something like that. It was the ugliest basketball game I have ever witnessed in person, even if it was a close game down to the wire.
What really annoys me is the mis-perception that UW still plays that style of basketball. Bo’s style and Bennett’s style aren’t even in the same ballpark. No, UW won’t score 85 a game like Duke, but they’re not scoring 48-50 either. I think they’re averaging like 70 pts/game this year.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:50 PM
Dick Bennett’s 97 Wisconsin team nearly killed NCAA Tourney bball in Pittsburgh back in ’97 vs Texas. It was the most brutal display of ball especially for a big school team. Thank God for Coppin State to save the day.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:51 PM
Bennett’s third year at UW I remember them scoring 10 points in the first half of the Big Ten Tournament game against Illinois…it should surprise no one that they were still in it late in the game in spite of this
March 8th, 2011 at 5:53 PM
Where did they play the game against Southwest Missouri State a couple years after that? Final that day was 43-32, the building should have been burnt to the ground after that

I’m not kidding when I say I followed/watched Marquette basketball more during that era than I did UW basketball, simply because watching UW put me to sleep. And that’s pre-Dwade – when MU wasn’t really any good either.
In short, had Dick Bennett not retired, I might have been convinced to go to MU.

March 8th, 2011 at 6:02 PM
Sorry for that but Coppin was the darling for everyone else that weekend and will always have a soft spot in my heart. They just kept coming at you, hell even their mascot got into a 1-on-1/dunk contest with Texas’ mascot. The place was literally rocking when they nearly came back from double digits to beat Texas in the second round. It’s why I absolutely hate the pod system where next year at CONSOL it’ll just be Pitt and possibly WVU fans instead of seeing different teams or the chance at Cinderella emerging.
March 8th, 2011 at 6:13 PM
Eddie Fogler’s coaching job that day was the worst I’ve ever seen.
March 8th, 2011 at 6:18 PM
Fogler seemed to be an awful Tourney coach with epic flameouts.

The fab 5 all received money, that is well documented. Guess Duke would not give him the money that Mich. did. He is an idiot.
March 9th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
Webber was the only one of the five ever implicated in anything that was a NCAA violation. The 3rd year (after Webber was playing for the Warriors) was NOT vacated. UM finished 2nd in the big ten behind Big Dog Glenn Robinson at Purdue and lost in the round of 8 to eventual National Champ Arkansas with Corless Williamson. Still a very good year.
I hate when Rose uses a negative term like ‘uncle tom’ when he is way more intelligent and articulate than that. it seems beneath him. anyway, Shane Battier attended the same high school as Webber and neither family was poor.
