2011 MLB Preview: NL West
Opening day of the 2011 baseball season is exactly 23 days away. As Kramer might say, giiiiddy up. Today marks the beginning of our division previews, which will be posted on Tuesday and Thursday for the next three weeks to cover all six divisions. What better way to kick things off than with the National League West, home of the World Champion San Francisco Giants? Still sounds a little strange. And remember those championship dong hats? Neither do I.
1. San Francisco Giants (2010 record: 92-70, 1st place) — Tim Lincecum, Jonathan Sanchez, Matt Cain, and Madison Bumgarner. These four names, along with good old Barry Zito as their fifth starter, are reason enough to believe the Giants will repeat as division champs. When your key “losses” are Juan Uribe, Edgar Renteria, Jose Guillen, and Chris Ray, you’ve got to like your chances. And without using the words “sizzle” or “needle,” the photograph at right is one of many colorful reasons that I hope I’m right. If you have concerns with the bats, remind yourself of the presence of Buster Posey, who will only get better, a trimmer Pablo Sandoval destined for redemption, and Will Clark’s mancrush Brandon Belt, who will be up at some point to play the role of magical rookie. As usual, things can change in a hurry, as evidenced by Timmy’s atrocious August and commanding September last year. You just never know. However, in this division, I think it’s safe to say we know. Prediction: 91 wins should do the deed
2. Colorado Rockies (2010 record: 83-79, 3rd place) — It’s no secret that the Colorado offense comes primarily from two players in Carlos “Gaga” Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki. The explosive, obscenely rich duo accumulated a WAR of 10.1 last year. The rest of the lineup combined for a paltry 3.7 WAR. Don’t expect that to change a whole lot. Todd Helton is now 37, Dexter Fowler will always take a backseat to Chris, Jason Giambi looks like a wolf, and while Ty Wigginton plays his ass off, he’s still Ty Wigginton. As for their pitching, which clearly begins with ace Ubaldo Jimenez — though he eventually came back to earth after a torrid start last year — there’s plenty of promise in 23-year-old Jhoulys Chacin. Jorge De La Rosa is serviceable but he’s never pitched more than 185 innings and his name is far too similar to Jorge De Paula’s, a pitching prospect who never panned out for the Yanks (that reverse jinx oughta do the trick). In the four and five spots are Aaron Cook’s shaky shoulder and Jason Hammel. Although this team is screaming third place to me, it’s the depressing NL West. Second place it is. Prediction: 87 wins, even with a pitcher named Billy Buckner
3. Los Angeles Dodgers (2010 record: 82-80, 4th place) — 2011 will mark Don Mattingly’s first full year as manager in the bigs, though sadly he’ll begin said mission sans mustache. Saying goodbye along with Joe Torre are Brad Ausmus, Reed Johnson, Russell Martin, George Sherrill and a few other players of equal “shoulder shrug” significance. A rather large question looming in the heads of Dodger fans is if Matt Kemp’s bat will remain in a poon funk or if he’s opted to settle for a piece of ass less famous than himself. Let’s hope for the latter or we’re looking at another hilarious OPS that hovers around .760. Owner Frank McCourt’s divorce continued to handcuff the team from acquiring any big names or adding to the current payroll — unless Jon Garland and Juan Uribe inspire you to tap dance — which means much of the weight will sit on the shoulders of their young pitching. The expectation is that Clayton Kershaw, who threw 200-plus innings (a 33.1 inning increase from ’09), will continue to improve. Then again, the same could have been said for Chad Billingsley after the 2008 season, but he’s more or less been stuck in neutral. Jonathan Broxton finished 2010 allowing 10 runs in his last 14 appearances. He’s two cheesesteaks, a few blown saves and a Funyuns addiction from becoming Gagne Part Deux. Prediction: Right down the middle with 81 wins
4. San Diego Padres (2010 record: 90-72, 2nd place) — The good news? San Diego pitching ranked second in the majors in WHIP and strikeouts. The bad news? The offense ranked 22nd in scoring, 27th in OPS, and they no longer have the services of Adrian Gonzalez. What’s even scarier is that they hope to replace some of his offensive output with Brad Hawpe. Cue thunderous laugh track. This is going to be one awful team to watch. Their shining star both on and off the field will be Mat Latos. His straight forward shtick has already delivered: “I could care less about people in San Francisco, what they think and what they say. Everybody is entitled to their opinion on everything. I could talk until I’m blue in the face about it. I’m sure Philly thinks the same thing. Florida probably thinks the same thing. People have their own opinions. Let them tweet about it.” Fantastic tone setter. A losing season should inspire some equally pissy quotes along the way. Prediction: 73 wins, with each home win accompanied by fireworks!
5. Arizona Diamondbacks (2010 record: 65-97, almost 1st place) — Whenever an article like “Seeking Better Team Through a Better Culture” is published, you know the team not only sucks, but is in a state where the impact players needed to truly turn things around aren’t arriving any time soon. It’s like making the best of the Road Beef offerings when playing in Pittsburgh. Nice to think positively, but you know you’re at death’s door. This is a team that last year set a record for strikeouts in a season but, to be fair, Mark Reynolds has taken his 1991 Detroit Tigers show to Baltimore. To be even fairer, Kevin Towers is running the show now so at the very least, respectability is expected but will take some time. Young Daniel Hudson should provide some optimism for the starting rotation. In 11 starts for the D-Backs, he went seven or more innings nine times. So there’s that, along with a crafty veteran or two like Melvin Mora. Prediction: 71 wins
***
The song for this division, in obvious honor of Tim Lincecum, is “High Enough” by the Damn Yankees.

along with good old Barry Zito as their fifth starter,
It’s a good thing he’s not being paid staff ace money.

I bet Will Clark LOOOOVES to sign autographs.

MLB 11: The Show out today…baseball previews begin…snow is melting…Spring is near!
March 8th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
So pretty, so beautiful.
/Wipes tear from eye
//Puts on championship dong hat
March 8th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
My brother had a Will Clark poster showing him in mid-swing hitting the cover off the ball. I’ve never been able to find a copy of it anyway. It was one of the cooler sports posters I came across in my childhood.

It’s like making the best of the Road Beef offerings when playing in Pittsburgh.
Might want to pack the lube before that Road trip.
/Reminds me of a funny story involving Ian Snell and his Milwaukee road beef while he was with the Pirates…
March 8th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
We said this last year about the Fathers… the best thing about Padres baseball is living in the Central or Eastern time zone and being able to put Dick Enberg on your MLB.tv and listen to the OH MY! just take you into the night.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Actually, Jeff Suppan is giving Zito a run for the 5th spot… and by giving Zito a run I mean he’s actually getting batters out instead of walking them.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Owner Frank McCourt’s divorce
Has this been settled fully? Isn’t Jamie still part-owner? Just wanted to throw that out there. Also, Dodgers are a leaden pumpkin that is rotting in spite of its being made of lead. They will be in the 60 win range this year. Especially with that shitty manager they’ve got
March 8th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
I must have missed when Ian Snell’s penis signed with the Cardinals…and to think people were worried about Wainright going down
The Diamondbacks are fun to watch if only for their trainwreck of an announcing team, Darren Sutton’s forced homerism along with Mark Grace who always sounds like he just had two packs of cigs and a sixer of Budweiser makes for good times
March 8th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
Especially with that shitty manager they’ve got
Don’t even start with managers.

and?
March 8th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
I was more just taking a dig at icon of losing baseball Don Mattingly
March 8th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
Is Zito’s contract ever up or is he simply a Giant for life?
March 8th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
I’m an Xbox guy, so my only option is mlb2k11. Last year’s was pretty good though. I’m picking up my copy tomorrow.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Needs more Gardenhire sucks/outfield defense/third base is a black hole.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Russell Martin sure as hell fell off the face of the Earth. Isn’t he a Yankee now?
March 8th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
This made me smile.
SFG forrrrr liiiiiiife…. UNFORTUNATELY
March 8th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Their bats give me much more hope than San Diego’s.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Russell Martin sure as hell fell off the face of the Earth. Isn’t he a Yankee now?
They need somebody to block Jesus Montero for a little while longer so they can still trade him as a “prized prospect” rather than trying to unload a fraud failure
March 8th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
Mattingly, I thought I told you to trim those sideburns? Go home, you’re off the team, for good!

March 8th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
That was me about two or so years ago. MLB 2K9 was a disaster, so I picked up a PS3 bundle that included MLB 09.
Changed my baseball gaming life forever.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
You’re a big believer in the diminishing returns of James Loney, Tim Ryan?
March 8th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
+1
March 8th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
apparently this is also move compatible. I might have to pick this up sooner rather than later if this is true.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Ricky Ledee and Drew Henson high five.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
2k9 was HORRIBLE. 2k10 was so much better. I’ve never played the show, but heard great things about it.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Only HR Derby uses Move, I believe…
March 8th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
I’ve seen worse…am I right Soriano?

Juan Rivera wants in on that action. So does Eric Duncan.

/offers jar of glue and tin of paint thinner.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
I haven’t tried the Move for PS3 yet. NBA 2K11 is compatible. I don’t like the Wii though, prefer to play my games sitting down like a normal lazy person.
I bet it’s fun for multiple people though if you’ve got some friends playing with you.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
i will burn the place down for getting my hopes up.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
BTW – Harry Teinowitz back on the Afternoon Saloon today. He was the guy in the Roundup DUI story.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
and?
Apparently Snell had serious girlfriend in PGH… buddy of mine was also banging one of his pieces of road beef that he had in Milwaukee. Snell gave her some sweet tickets (among other things) to a Brewers game, and she brought my buddy and I to a game against the Pirates. Girlfriend in PGH somehow found out road beef girl’s #… and called her while we were at the game. “Stay away from my man, etc., etc.” High comedy. For the record, Ian Snell was a huge douche (met him later at a bar) and the piece of road beef in question was maybe a 6. Nice body, butterface. Oh, and she was a whore. Obviously.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
Gardenhire does suck, outfield defense is probably the worst in the AL and third base might be finally covered up with Danny “Hide Your Daughters” Valencia.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
I honestly would have the same exact order for the NL West.
And MLB the show is the ONLY baseball game. Get rid of the shitbox and get the better system. //lobs videogame grendade
March 8th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
Trade you Quade for Gardenhire, Chief.
/sulks
March 8th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
The Show captures all the nuances…working out of town scoreboards, fans reach for foul balls along the walls down the lines, beach balls get knocked around in the stands…the graphics are gorgeous and Road to the Show single player mode is a complete free-time vacuum.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
Glad I could work in an Ian Snell/Pirates story in the NL West preview thread. My apologies.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
I believe the Giants are still stuck with him for another two years plus an option year. Unfortunately the Giants are also stuck with Aaron Rowand’s idiotic contract for another two years.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
Ryan Howard’s 6/125 says hi.
/could’ve signed Pujols this offseason
March 8th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
@S-Weath: To be fair to the Padres, Cameron Maybin will be amazing for the first 9 days of the season:
1 Jason Bartlett
2 Orlando Hudson
3 Chase Headley
4 Ryan Ludwick
5 Brad Hawpe
6 Will Venable
7 Nick Hundley
8 Cameron Maybin
March 8th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
That’s gross.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Don’t sulk. Quade will be fine.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
My cube neighbor used to date Tom Gorzellany in high school. That’s kinda interesting.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Last I heard they took it out of court and are trying to reach a settlement.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
i like the dodgers to finish 2nd here. it’s an AWFUL division, but i’ll take the dodgers pitching over Ubaldo and, um, Troy.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
My cube neighbor used to date Tom Gorzellany in high school. That’s kinda interesting.
It’s only interesting if she’s hot. Is she hot?
March 8th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but I think the Giants record last year had a lot of flukiness. I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished 3rd.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
Yeah, I get your point about the Padres offense being hilariously terrible but they have at least decent defense overall and a decent pitching staff. I’m not saying they’re a good team, per se, just that the Dodgers have all the makings of a truly awful team in spite of their perceived talent
March 8th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
Butters – That’s what’s LEFT on his contract though, we’re factoring in the contract as a whole which easily dwarfs Soriano in the idiocracy ratings
Philly – I’d rather have Howard and his 6/$125 than Zito and his 7/$126 (or whatever it was) 100 times out of 100, it’s not even close
March 8th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
He’s a spoiled and petulant child and is one ex-Buc I hope fails miserably, depression or not
March 8th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
Yikes, wonder if some poor bastard bought season tickets before realizing this was going to be the lineup
March 8th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
I’d give her an 8.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
what’s the odds this division finishes with the least runs scored at the end of the season? 9-2?
March 8th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
i really like it with Killzone 3. it makes it feel like one of the arcade shooters i grew up playing when you hold the PS sharpshooter gun.
and it’s a sit down game.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
My cube neighbor used to date Tom Gorzellany in high school. That’s kinda interesting.
That is cool. If he writes a post about it do you think TBL would publish it?
March 8th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
You would probably be the only one not surprised to see that. How are TWO teams going to beat out the Giants in this division with their pitching staff? And not just starters, but bullpen too.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
That’s hilarious! Whole lot of winning in that gay joke.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
lincecum could throw a no hitter against that padres line up evertime he faces them.

I’d rather have Howard and his 6/$125 than Zito and his 7/$126 (or whatever it was) 100 times out of 100, it’s not even close
though, Zito will be more productive at the end of his contract (because of his pitching style) than Howard will be at the end of his.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Only if he ends the move with a counterclockwise swirl.

I’d give her an 8.
I’d give my left arm to work with some 6′s. Let alone an 8.
/need a new job.
//small offices suck, unless you’re lucky, in which case they’re awesome
March 8th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Zito only has 3 years left, whereas Howard’s numbers are down across the board (OBP, HR, OPS, SLG, splits, WAR). And his body is only going to age as he’s turning 31 this year. Terrible move on RAJ’s part. At least we get to see some dingers!
Don’t see the Dodgers offense giving them enough life to battle the Rockies for 2nd. Unless Loney magically hits 25-30 hr this year, which he hasn’t come close to at all.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Okay, the obvious team that might beat them is Colorado. Why couldn’t LA or San Diego fluke their way to 85 wins and finish ahead of SF. I just don’t think the giants are that great. They might win the division, they might not. I’m just not a big fan of them.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
My cube neighbor used to date Tom Gorzellany in high school. That’s kinda interesting.
It’s only interesting if she’s hot. Is she hot
I’m guessing not, Gorzelany looks like Sloth from “Goonies”
March 8th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
Better than NL Central, AL West, AL Central, and on par with the oft overrated NL East.
Will be down from last year, but always overlooked by East Coast retards.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
Prediction: 87 wins, even with a pitcher named Billy Buckner
Former TBLAD commenter Billy Buckner?
He was looking for a new job….

March 8th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
i got a nice seat observing the comings and goings of my company’s talented female coworkers. average age of the company is something like 28.9 or 29.8. i’m really looking forward to warm weather.
we’re hiring, i think, if you live in Jersey.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
very true. That Howard contract is brutal. But I hear he puts butts in the seats and sells t shirts so that makes it all better.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
My entire office has about 120 people in it. Probably about 30 dudes. I’m the only guy in my department though. Lots of hot chicks in their 30s in my office. And the receptionist at the front desk is super duper fucking hot. She’s only 22.
/really not a scumbag, happily married to a very hot chick
March 8th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
I’m guessing not, Gorzelany looks like Sloth from “Goonies”
I don’t know if you know this or not, captain_spalding, but sometimes star athletes (I’m guessing Gorzellany was a star in HS, right?) are able to “bag” women that might otherwise be considered “out of their league”
March 8th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
LA with what hitters and pitchers? San Diego with what offense? San Diego reached 90 wins last year with an overperforming pitching staff and Adrian Gonzalez. The Giants got to 92 wins with their pitching and timely hitting. Well, their pitching is all back and the hitting is all back with a full year of Posey, a trimmed down Panda, and “potential” Posey 2.0. The only other team that can win this division is the Rockies, the other 3 will be fighting to stay out of last place.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
The thing about Zito’s deal is it already feels like it’s been at least 7 years. What a painful, painful contract.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
What are you smoking? The reds and brewers are both better than the giants or rockies. The White Sox and Twins are better than both, and the Braves and Phillies are much better than both.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Colorado is much more dangerous than the Dodgers IMO, who are noticeably regressing. Significant home field advantage.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Nice of you to stop by, apparently you missed the full post on this earlier today…
/End sarcasm
//But seriously though
March 8th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
we’re hiring, i think, if you live in Jersey.
Alas, I do not. Down here in the ATL. The weather’s been warm for about 3 weeks now though, so that’s nice.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
Why couldn’t LA or San Diego fluke their way to 85 wins and finish ahead of SF. I just don’t think the giants are that great.
I agree with this. Aside from the poor track record of preseason baseball predictions in general I’ll attest to the overall shittiness of the NL West and the fluky nature of the Giants winning last year
March 8th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
I’m not saying they suck, I’m just saying I wouldn’t be shocked if they finished 3rd. And a trimmed down panda doesn’t mean a damn thing.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
My entire office has about 120 people in it. Probably about 30 dudes. I’m the only guy in my department though. Lots of hot chicks in their 30s in my office. And the receptionist at the front desk is super duper fucking hot. She’s only 22.
Fuck you. If it matters, I mean that in the nicest way possible.
March 8th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
Better than NL Central, AL West, AL Central, and on par with the oft overrated NL East.
so you’re saying it’s AL East > NL West/NL East…?
thanks for coming out.

/i have too much downtime
March 8th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
Yup. The Dodgers need huge, healthy years from Kemp & Ethier. Otherwise, that offense is hot garbage, and they have nothing in their farm system to help. Dee Gordon should be a sprinter not a baseball player.
/eat some food

San Diego reached 90 wins last year with an overperforming pitching staff
Please explain. The pitcher-friendliness of PetCo is more pronounced the last couple of years than the hitter-friendliness of Coors.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
While hoping for improvements from Panda and posey, I wouldn’t count on Aubrey Huff or Pat burrell replicating last year for SF.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
WS Championship cigar.
NL East is better, but the NL Central is as trashy as its fan bases past the Reds. Brewers could be an interesting wild card this year.

Please explain. The pitcher-friendliness of PetCo is more pronounced the last couple of years than the hitter-friendliness of Coors
Agree with this. And the ‘home friendliness’ of Coors has always been overplayed to an extent.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
The Reds that got no-hit by Halladay? The same Halladay the Giants beat? The Giants won the season series against the Reds, but the Reds are better? And the Brewers why? Because they got Greinke and Marcum? They didn’t even make the playoffs last year but they’re better than the Giants already? And GTFO here with that AL Central homerism, you’re the one smoking the good stuff over there.
The only teams I’ll give you credit for are the Braves and Phillies, of which the Giants beat BOTH!
March 8th, 2011 at 4:02 PM

Aside from Latos, it’s the list of heads in Kurkjian’s freezer.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
The Padres were picked to finish last in the division (yes, by so-called “experts”), mainly because their pitching was so suspect and they had no hitting aside from Gonzo. Well what happened? Their pitching was fucking lights out for most of the year and finally came back down to earth at the end of the year when they had their 10 game losing streak. Only because of their park could they replicate those numbers, but even if they do, they won’t have the same offensive output.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
No I’d say AL East > NL East…
then it’s more of a toss-up. NL West track record has been solid in recent years and that’s why I’d place it third. Lots of young, developing talent on each team, and except for the Diamondbacks, they will all be competitive.
Just because you don’t pay attention to the teams doesn’t mean they aren’t good.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
+1 for this gold right here

So much to respond to this. I don’t know where to begin. First of all, I know the Giants won the WS last year, and in doing so beat some playoff teams. But lets talk about this year. I’m not an SEC fan, so I don’t root for entire conferences/divisions. No homerism in me saying the White Sox and Twins are better than the Giants. And I do think the Brewers are better than the giants. They both have equally shitty defenses, both have good pitching (edge to the giants), but the Brewers actually have a decent offensive team. And the Reds are better as well. I’m glad you use ONE FUCKING game for your support. WHo cares if they got no hit once. They’re better than the fucking giants.

Aside from Latos, it’s the list of heads in Kurkjian’s freezer.
So you will be quite angry at the July trade that sends Jesus Montero to San Diego in exchange for a healthy and “re-charged” Aaron Harang?
March 8th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
I think Aaron Harrang was a good pick-up for the Pads. His profile fits great for Petco compared to Cincy and the price they got him at was good too. He can easily replace or exceed Jon Garland’s production.

Glenn Beck should run this on a continuous loop on the ticker at the bottom of the television broadcast of his show.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
White Sox got better and so did the Tigers. All 3 of those teams (twins included) will be competitive and probably finish over .500 (like they did last year).
March 8th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
I think he’s also a San Diego native, bcan
March 8th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
I could take a hypersnap of the thread for everyone, haha
March 8th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
The Tigers and White Sox (the latter of which wasn’t bad last year) both improved…the Royals are on their way to being interesting if their young talent finally comes together
March 8th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
Disagree but I’m completely biased. 3 out of the past 4 years it has produced two 90+ win teams. Rockies, Dodgers, Giants have good young players that I think should continue to improve. Could be wrong, but I’m using past performances.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
Please do.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
If he brings that Dorito on his chin, I’m all for it.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Just because you don’t pay attention to the teams doesn’t mean they aren’t good.
if i only watched Orioles games and Sunday Night baseball i’d have committed suicide by now.
i’m well aware of the NL West and, IMO, i would not place it above the NL East or the AL Central. It’s above the NL Central and AL West for sure, though.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
If you actually read the post instead of browsed, you’d see I cited that the Giants WON THE SEASON SERIES FROM THE REDS. I just wanted to type that sentence that you decided to make your main point off.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
I think the Rockies will be better than last year. I think the giants will regress some. Posey will be a beast, but I wouldn’t expect too much from Panda. Burrell and Huff are definitely primed for regression. You can’t expect too much from Belt b/c a.)he probably won’t be up for 6-8 weeks and b.) he will be a rookie. Doesn’t mean they might not win the division. But as a whole, I don’t think the west is a really strong division.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
Not going to agree with a one-game sample size, but I guess using results on the field are at least somewhat better than the “Because I said so” rationale you’re using.
The Reds are from Cincinnati and have Dusty Baker as their manager. Things will revert to the norm here.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
I don’t havea dog in this fight (Reds vs. Giants) but as a general rule: Teams managed by Bruce Bochy >>> teams manged by Dusty Baker
March 8th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
They’re better than the fucking giants.
it’s hard to say something like this about the defending champs. fluke or no fluke, they do wear the belt for the time being.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:16 PM
I did see that. But you also talk about the reds getting no hit by a completely different team. If you type it in your comment, I might point it out.
Stop being a homer for one second and look back at what you said. You claimed the NL West was the 2nd best division in baseball. Child, please.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:17 PM
Prime example…. Dusty’s managing in 2002

//Remembers 2010 and smiles again
March 8th, 2011 at 4:18 PM
Disagree with this. Not expecting his 2009 but definitely expecting better than 2010.
Agree with this, though Brandon Belt could have a Posey-like impact (best case) or just be a competent replacement if one or both struggle.
Also, Burrell wasn’t necessarily a world-beater last year. He had some big hits but was pretty bad at other times. It’s not like he tore it up.

Sweet fuck, pre-op or post-op?
/deletable comment
//old school
March 8th, 2011 at 4:20 PM
I’ve never understood the arguments and banters about better divisions or conferences in pro sports. There’s no selection committee or any subjective measures to make the post season. Root for your team do to well and root like hell against your rivals.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:20 PM
Ok Ocho, please show me where I said the division as a whole was the #2 division in baseball, I’ll hold…
All I’ve said is that there’s no way the Giants are finishing 3rd in their division, and that they’re better than the Reds and Brewers.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
I’m not using a “because I said so” rationale. Please go look at all my comments in this post. I tell why I think the giants are going to regress. I tell why I think the AL Central is better. I can’t go through why each team I think is better than the giants actually is.
But let’s take the reds. Deep SP, great bullpen, really good offense, solid defense. The only place the Giants are better is SP. And that’s not by as much as you might think. Lincecum is great. Cain is very good. But how will Bumgardner hold up after the huge increase in innings? Sanchez is solid, but very inconsistent.
And all I said was I wouldn’t be surprised if the giants finished third. You guys do watch baseball, right? Shit like this happens all the time.
But I’m ready to go now. Keep bringing up more points for me to refute.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
Jthussler made that comment. I’m debating with both of you simultaneously. You can’t expect me to keep this shit straight.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:25 PM
My brother had a Will Clark poster showing him in mid-swing hitting the cover off the ball. I’ve never been able to find a copy of it anyway. It was one of the cooler sports posters I came across in my childhood.
is this it?

I can expect whatever I want! Now keep it straight! LOL
/I love that baseball’s back!
March 8th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
Sweet ever-loving god, this…I wish the AL Central was as bad as it used to be, having to deal with two potentially strong teams in the division sucks
March 8th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
It’s a great way to waste the day.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
This is the main point. I’m pumped for baseball season.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
Slow day at work, and I like to talk baseball. Sue me.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Here’s my final thoughts Watsonian…
Giants = really good “team”, favorite for division, legit title contender because of pitching and bullpen
Reds = good team, personally don’t think better than the Giants tho, especially after Giants won season series last year
Braves/Phillies = both reaaly good teams, I think Phillies on paper are slightly better than the Giants but Braves would have to be equal and not better (imo)
Brewers = need to see what they’ve got, they’re integrating new pieces and couldn’t even make the playoffs last year
March 8th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Clarified this. NL East is better this year, I admitted to that, but I think the NL West is normally on par with it. I don’t think it’s a “terrible” division, as has been said multiple times.
In the end, I don’t really care. We got out chip and that’s all that matters.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
Also, forgot to include Twins/White Sox…
I can agree they’re on the same level and maybe the Twins only are slightly better, but it’s just so hard to compare AL vs. NL because they don’t play the same teams enough.
March 8th, 2011 at 4:32 PM
By the way, I’ll be taking a hypersnap of this thread, who wants to hold on to it? It’ll be in a jpg format and I don’t have Twitter so I can e-mail it anyone that wants to take out in a few months…
March 8th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
Fair enough. And I agree about comparing the NL vs. AL teams. Difficult to do. I do think the Reds are better though, just my opinion.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:20 PM
Ian Snell thanks his lucky stars he doesn’t look like Sam Casell.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:21 PM
People who say the Giants winning last year was a fluke are just fucking idiots. PITCHING. THEY HAVE GOOD FUCKING PITCHING! That’s what always wins in the post season. Holy christ… do we really need to get into this?
March 8th, 2011 at 5:36 PM
is this it?
http://bayareasportsguy.com/wp-content/will-clark-poster.jpg
Yes that’s the one. Much obliged.
March 8th, 2011 at 5:57 PM
THEY HAVE GOOD FUCKING PITCHING! That’s what always wins in the post season.
except for, you know, the Braves during the 90′s.
/no need to go all CAPS
March 9th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Sorry about the caps, but this “fluke” talk is ridiculous and annoying. As for the Braves, if I recall, they had a bunch of A-list starters and a great closer, but their middle-relief and setup men weren’t so great. I could be wrong, of course.
