UConn Lost $1.8 Million Playing in Fiesta Bowl
Toast of the Town: Glendale toasted the Connecticut Huskies. The school paid handsomely for the gesture. The University of Connecticut lost $1.8 million playing in the Fiesta Bowl, spending $4.3 million and receiving just $2.5 million from the Big East. The school spent $2.9 million on tickets alone, reselling just 2,771 out of the 17,500 they bought. Could anyone have the heart to deny college football players a once-in-a-lifetime experience? For that price? Certainly. San Diego State, exceeding its ticket allotment and not traveling, made $11,000. [The Daily Campus]

Contract Connecticut?
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:18 PM
In conclusion: The Big East should have their automatic bid revoked.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:18 PM
They should drop out of the Big East…go the independent route like BYU and they won’t have to worry about making it to BCS games

love this

Bingo. It’s not the bowl’s fault that no one from Uconn cares about football. They could have called up any number of teams and had a packed house and those schools would have made money.

Never gets old.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Well we know they have smart fans. Why would you buy a ticket when you know they are going to get stomped?
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Exactly.

The linked article says that schools should follow the San Diego plan. Sounds good. So all the midwest schools have to do is lobby to get the campus moved to Southern California so nobody has to travel!

This post was predictable as the post-lunch crap I’m going to take.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:24 PM
They should have had a girls b-ball exhibition before the football game
/problem solved

I agree that the amount of bowl games is a bit much, but this issue in particular is all about Uconn being a basketball school who views football as secondary. Also, as stated above, they were always going to get housed by OU. Hell, they lost to Michigan’s for crying out loud.

Or put a BCS game in Connecticut…I’m sure ESPN will be happy to sponsor

T-Minus 4 hrs 35 minutes until I can go home and play the new Black Ops maps.

With a bloated playoff Uconn could have played in two or three games like this.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:26 PM
If college football had a salary cap, none of this would’ve ever happened.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Teams looking to profit on the postseason might want to follow the lead of San Diego State.
First line in linked article
The Aztecs turned a profit of about $11,000 on their trip to the Poinsettia Bowl, played only a few miles from campus in Qualcomm Stadium.
Second line.
Awesome writing here.

So UCONN spent $1.8 million for a 4 hour commercial for their university? There are worse uses of cash.

With a bloated playoff Uconn could have played in two or three games like this
Yep.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:36 PM
yep, well put. didn’t see this post coming…

The other problem is you can get a better deal on tickets on Stub Hub than buying through the School.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:38 PM
That made me laugh.

I think the savvy Kenny Williams does their finances.

I can’t believe I’m about to say these words, but if Connecticut lost money on one cross country trip, then what makes anyone think they would make money on having at least 2 or 3 road trips that could also potentially be cross country through a playoff format.
I’m still for a playoff but my intensity of preference at this point ranks below my preference of which socks I wear to work each day.

Who wants to spend all that money to go to Glendale Arizona (middle of nowhere) and see your team get trounced?
/Phoenix sucks.

I loved the Hercule Poroit books as a good, quality entertainment.

I wasn’t impressed for the BCS game. I’d go back if I could play at least 2 rounds of golf.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Does Raymond Chandler count as crime/mystery?
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:49 PM
i would count that. i’ve read a one of his a long time ago, good idea to pick it up again.
can’t say as that one has crossed by mind, didn’t know murder on the orient express was Poirot. I shall check this one out, too.
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:49 PM
But if there was a playoff, they’d be rolling in gold coins Scrooge McDuck-style!!!!
/Or not.
