Is he just going to switch teams each year so that he’s always on a team that doesnt have the Browns on their schedule?
March 2nd, 2011 at 8:11 AM
good on him for saving his money.

anyone know the outcome of the guy who fell in the ski video? it looks like he’s kind of standing up after the fall … i’m not in the ski community so I have no idea where to go and look for details

little known fact: I have tried to ski twice, and failed miserably. I’m really coordinated and I like to think of myself as a natural athlete but damn if skiing isn’t the toughest thing ever

I’m with ya TBL, I couldnt get the hang of going back and forth in order to get down the slope, so I would be barreling down the mountain in a straight line, get too fast and be too scared to try the triangle stop, and so I would just fall over to the side on purpose in order to stop.
March 2nd, 2011 at 8:38 AM
going to myrtle beach to play some golf and see the sun next week, anything i should/shouldn’t do?
March 2nd, 2011 at 8:39 AM
I’m a great skiier but an insanely awful snowboarder. you should try snowboarding. some people (like me) prefer to be able to move both feet independently (like in skiing), and some people are better when both feet are attached to the same board and move together.
March 2nd, 2011 at 8:40 AM

The presti plan wouldn’t look nearly as genius if he didnt win the lottery for durant.
March 2nd, 2011 at 8:57 AM

March 2nd, 2011 at 8:59 AM
You’ve got to admit… That is amazing value.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:00 AM

March 2nd, 2011 at 9:01 AM
By win the lottery you mean have every pundit in the nation tell Portland they have to take the big man?
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:02 AM
Never went skiing or snowboarding, which is shocking considering I live 2 hours from 2 ski resorts. But I have tried snowboarding with my sled when I was younger, it hurt a lot.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:03 AM
So I am supposed to praise this guy for realizing giving Lewis a $100 million contract was a bad idea? Oh and by the way the team that did made the NBA Finals. What have the Thunder done? This reminds me very much of an article a few years ago praising Morely, he was methodical too. I’m not sold yet.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:03 AM
I think it’s one of the pure joys in life, and I’ve only been 3 times (one of which was in NC of all places). I want to move to Denver just to be close to great skiing.

March 2nd, 2011 at 9:06 AM
I love skiing, haven’t been for quite a while though. the key for novice skiers is the snow plow method. keeps you under control, instead of just flying straight down the mountain.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:06 AM
what ruined it for me was seeing my cousin in a cast for 18 months with three corkscrew fractures in his leg that kinda killed skiing for me.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:07 AM
She looks like a Siamese cat
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:07 AM
Presti just gave Kendric Perkins almost 10 mil a year for the next four years, depspite numerous knee injuries. He also fell into Kevin Durant.
He didn’t sign Rashard Lewis…The Magic did. Without Rasahrd Lewis, we wouldn’t have been in the NBA Finals in 2009.
I’m not crying, and neither is he.
NBA GMs more than ANY other GM out there have to use a lot of luck. One player can be the difference between ok…and great. That doesn’t mean there aren’t bad GMs.
That being said, LIKE every NBA GM, if the owners of the Thunder said you can go into the luxury tax I guarantee that like every other GM that has been told that, he’d spend recklessly on guys hoping they’d be a key cog.

ex-skier now a snowboarder. Freaking love it. Headed for a year end trip early next week.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:08 AM
My wife grew up skiing so she has the classic form down where you go from side to side and all that. I hate that shit. I try to go as fast as I can down the mountain so I can do it again. Skiing fast is exhilarating.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:10 AM
that and slightly shorter skis. even now, if my skis are just a hair bit too long (i rent, don’t own), i feel it when trying to make quick cuts, the ski drags in the back, throws me off.
also think skiing is a great way to test lower body strength.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:11 AM
I live within a few hours of some of the best mountains for skiing/snowboarding in Canada, but I never go. Never took it up when I was younger and it’s not exactly an inexpensive recreation.
/prefers to go snowmobiling
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:11 AM
Shit can happen for sure, but even with the kamikaze way that I ski, I’ve never had an issue. But I have seen some nasty spills. The funny thing is, I would guarantee you that you’d love it if you went to Breckenridge or some place like that. Spend a day learning how to do it and then let her rip.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:11 AM
Team Snowboarding. Was easy for me to pick up after the inital learning to stand and turn.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:11 AM
i love skiing fast, especially when i take the speed right to the brink of my comfort zone.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:12 AM
From the Fitzpatrick article: “Take the test seriously. You don’t want a bad score to influence your draft status. It can and it will.”
Obviously he doesn’t read Mike Florio, getting a good score will hurt you worse

Skiing’s cool, but yachting and polo is where it’s at.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:13 AM
So true. My quads burn after skiing.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:13 AM
That was a sign and trade. And in a league full of pretty bad GMs, he hasn’t exactly screwed things up.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:13 AM

skiing’s easier to learn, especially as an adult. Although the risk is higher for wrenched knees and the like. Snowboarding injuries are usually wrist, shoulder, and ass bone, since that is what breaks a fall. Oh, and there is the occasional concussion when the head hits immediately after the ass.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:15 AM

I can think of less costly ways to break a limb or two. I’ve tried it, it was fun and all, but like golf, it’s kinda not cheap.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:17 AM
This is interesting. SI/CBS does an expose on CFB teams and arrests, and the top 10 includes 3 B1G schools and one SEC school. I would not have guessed that. It also includes everyone’s favorite little guy Boise State (a top 4 finish!).
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:18 AM

“Knox … open handed slapped Turner in the head with such force that she was thrown to the ground,” the police report states. “Knox then jumped on her, grabbed her by the throat, picked her up by her throat and slammed her head into the wall. He held her against the wall, continuing to choke her.”
Sometimes they just won’t listen.

RC Buford. Aided by the presence of Tim Duncan, but he’s surrounded him with talented players (often selected relatively low in the draft) and role players that fit into the team dynamic.

After a few minutes, according to police records Fauonuku’s cousin inquired about buying some marijuana. That was a prearranged signal, Fauonuku later told police, for him to act. He pulled out what witnesses said looked like a 9-millimeter gun and pointed it directly at two 19-year-olds.
“I was shaking,” one of the witnesses inside the garage told SI and CBS News. “All my friends were, too.”
The boys complied while Fauonuku’s cousin scooped up the marijuana and a wallet.
Before turning to leave, Fauonuku allegedly issued a chilling threat. “If I hear this on the news,” one of the witnesses recalled him saying, “I’m going to come back and kill you.”

He hasn’t focused all his fiscal attention on those unions. Those battles are the ones that the spotlight is focused on. He’s put a halt to a lot of infrastructure and put more pressure on municipalities to make decisions about how they spend their money by decreasing state aid.
He’s not the only NJ leader to have issues with public employee unions.

Last time I went Skiing was in Breck, and I fell at the end of the day. It was an epic fall and I hit my head hard. I don’t remember anything for the next couple hours but I collapsed walking out to the car as I apparently had a concussion.

March 2nd, 2011 at 9:31 AM
I really dislike how they grouped “players charged” into one big category. You want to frame a story, don’t frame it based strictly on number of arrests. Especially since places like Iowa treat public urination as a sexual offense.

March 2nd, 2011 at 9:33 AM
He’s forcing the municipalities to adapt, which I agree with. I’m lucky where I live in Jersey that they’ve worked hard to adapt, but other areas in South Jersey (Camden, in particular), I’m kinda afraid for.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:33 AM
Ha. That’s it. Man… I’d be more surprised if he was the first.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:33 AM
I said this on TVF, so I’ll just copy it in:
I was actually surprised at how low the number was. Only 7% have a record. If you polled CFB fans and asked what the percentage was, I bet few would go as low as 7%. Also, did you notice who wasn’t on the list? Mark Richt sure does run a terrible program and all.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:34 AM
Yes, by all means, lets get involved in another ground war in the middle east. It’s worked out so well so far.
thats what i meant. i hope we have no interest in going into libya, just stay the hell out of the middle east if we can. but obama reopening the lockerbie investigation seems to lay the groundwork for it.

Is he really re-opening the investigation? We already know what went down and who did it… what is there to investigate? ZERO chance Obama gets us into another war. ZERO. Forcing changes to state contracts with the unions is a good thing. Teachers, firefighters, police, all.
But I’m still not buying the “we have no money to prepare our state’s transportation infrastructure for the 21st century but we have a lot of money for a casino”.
Priorities.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:40 AM
It’s disgusting…but you’re right. Absolutely nothing will come out of it. Instead of trying to plug the 3 tractor trailer sized hole in the damn (Social Security, Medicade/care and defense) we’ll focus on the dime sized holes elsewhere.

There’s also this small thing called the 2012 election in a year and eight months, and his numbers have been slightly up in recent times. I don’t think he’s looking to spoil it by getting the country into another desert conflict with no real end in sight.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:41 AM
i really hope we get out of afghanistan for a few years, save some money, then go out and party again w/o having to take out another mortgage from the bank of China.
Anyone see Colbert last night? They had the New Yorker’s Chinese correspondent as a guest. Fascinating stuff. There are more kids in China learning English than America. More Chinese kids can name all 50 states and point them out on the map than American kids. They have invested 50 times the amount into energy development than we have. Colbert made an interesting point — it’s because they don’t have to go through the democratic process to pay for all of it. No Bureaucratic bullshit. If they want money to get something done, it gets done.

I have no clue what the best course of action is, but I do find it hilarious that we think we can conquer and mold Afghanistan. Go read some history on those who’ve tried (and failed) to do just that. Also, until Pakistan gets its head out of its ass, Bin Laden will never be caught. Pakistan is the real problem, but those idiots would rather use our billions making sure India doesn’t invade than deal with terrorists.

to be fair, we let him off the hook in 2001-02 when we could’ve either gotten him from behind or dropped a bunch of mines around the khyber pass/tora bora/afghan-paki border region. both were nixed by the powers-that-be and a large part of that is due to the potential for pakistan to pull some bullshit.
we easily could’ve gotten him, but the guys calling the big shots were too worried about casualties and bureaucracy to go for it.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:47 AM
They’re open to it because they don’t quite trust him, and when they asked about a long term deal his people came back with 3 year/$39million. That’s cracked

March 2nd, 2011 at 9:49 AM
The Brits failed, then the Russians failed, then the Brits failed a couple more times (all a part of the Great Game), no one was stupid enough to try it for awhile and then the Soviets brilliantly thought “hey why not?” Now it’s our turn to deal with that horrible, horrible stretch of earth. I’m hopeful we can somehow leave with something semi-functional intact but considering I studied history as an undergrad, I’m not too confident.
Not that we’ll ever be 100% gone in 2014 or whenever it is we’re supposed to be out. We’ll still have advisers and support forces there to help the Afghan Security Force.
March 2nd, 2011 at 9:49 AM
yup. smaller, more efficient forces will probably be more effective than massive armies. we have delta and seals for a reason, send them in to pakistan to hunt, drag his body to afghanistan, and say they caught him crossing the boarder.

Politicians are pussies. Even though this is a good idea, they wouldn’t risk proposing the elimination of jobs because that would kill their re-election bid. Also, Unions won’t allow it. Those are too of the biggest reasons states are fucked when they try to balance a budget — more often than not, instead of making necessary cuts, they just do some magic accounting and leave it for the next guys to figure out.

We are no closer to winning the “hearts and minds” than we were 10 years ago. The Taliban is NEVER going away. They are going to have to be a part of whatever government we try to prop up or they will sweep in and take full control when we leave. If we keep operating at status quo, we will be there forever.

March 2nd, 2011 at 9:55 AM

This. I agree that’s probably what you saw/heard, but I’m sure it was sandwiched in-between a segment on how Charlie Sheen has lost his mind and some guy schlepping his new book. That show dumbs down news so much, I’d hardly call it credible. Until I see a credible link, I’m not believing Obama is re-opening an already closed case. It would be different if nobody was ever prosecuted, but we tried and convicted those assholes.

I’ll let you know how things work out in my city. Rochester’s Super (and some members of the school board) have been trying to close down some city schools, remodel others, and generally makeover the city school district.
Parents have gone ballistic. Sending their kids to different schools, further away, across potentially dangerous neighborhoods. Closing some schools that are the centerpiece of a neighborhood. Questions about how tightly packed some buildings will get. It’s been messy.
Teachers union just had a no-confidence vote in the Super. 95% vote no confidence.

That’s what I’m saying. The line between the good guys and bad guys is not black and white. Good luck finding a politician willing to wipe out entire Afghan villages.
The reason we entered Afghanistan was to cripple Al-Qaeda, not conquer the entire country.
IMO, our entire focus should be on swift tactical missions aimed at Al-Qaeda leaders. If civilians get in the way of those missions, they are fair game.

+7 trillion in national debt
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Jersey – this is the part of the article that bothers me:
“They pointed out that despite all Christie’s talk of shared sacrifice, he refused to renew a tax on millionaires in New Jersey that would have raised about $800 million this year — not enough to solve the state’s fiscal problems, certainly, but enough to restore most of the school aid that was slashed from the budget.”
I’m all for cutting, but why are you focusing your attention solely on the middle class public sector? Why shouldn’t the cuts happen everywhere and not just on the teacher’s union?
Also, I don’t necessarily think adopting the business practices of the private sector (i.e. big companies that laid off thousands, raised benefits costs, restricted pay raises and bonuses for mid-level employees to keep profits high) is the best way to balance your budget.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:25 AM

Because teacher’s unions don’t vote for Rep’s. If they did, they wouldn’t get cut. Everyone wants to tighten belts in a time of recession, but each side only wants to tighten the belts of the opposing party.

Because the teachers don’t donate to his campaign fund like the others.

That’s pretty simplified. The democrats want to put the tax level on rich people where it was in the 90s.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:33 AM
SG: Here’s the thing about a millionaire’s tax. What would you do if you were, I don’t know… Jay-Z and you found out your taxes would be going up as a resident of a state because of the amount of income you made? You’d move. Millionaire’s taxes won’t work. It’s as simple as somebody just changing there address or the address of where there business is located. Also, the state is in heavy heavy debt. Middle class families have been leaving at a higher rate than they’ve been coming in because of how expensive it is to live in the state. The less people that live here and work here, the less tax revenue. The less tax revenue, the harder it is to support a public workforce, let alone give them raises and support their retirement funds.
They’re not being asked to give up their entire way of life, just to make sacrifices for the good of the whole. And they have been doing a lot more of that.
A couple months ago, one of the country’s most rockstar mayors, Mr. Corey Booker, had a showdown with the police union of Newark. He told them that they needed to reduce pay and pay increases in order for people to keep their jobs. The union refused. And they ended up firing hundreds of officers. That is the kind of stuff we’re dealing with here.

March 2nd, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Maybe my problem is I have tunnel vision. I can only see the stuff that is happening to me and my friends, and I think it’s unfair. There needs to be reform everywhere, not just on the middle class workers in the public sector!
I’m not asking for a handout from the rich. I just can’t wrap my head around why you want to come down on people making $55,000 a year but people making $250,000+ a year are completely untouchable.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Agree, but if you left it up to the Dems alone, I bet you’d see them cut far more Right-leaning things than not.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:36 AM
And herein lies the huge disconnect that points to SG’s question. A comment like the above assumes — amazingly — that all earned income belongs to the government, and that they should dole it out, or “allow” individual earners to keep it, as Washington sees fit.
There is a world of difference between a spending problem (entitlements) and a revenue problem (taxes).
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:38 AM
And yet no one in Washington has the balls to risk re-election and cut defense or entitlements. They’re all a bunch of bitches. I would love….LOVE a 10 minute window to dress down a joint session of Congress.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Whoa. They may be backwards but in terms of fighting each other for “thousands of years”, you could easily say the same for much of the West, especially Europe, until post WWII. Also, the notion that countries purpose for “coming in” to the region was to “civilize it” is just so staggeringly wrong I’m not sure what to say.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:39 AM
presidential campaigns are more theater than merit these days.
as long as ‘these days’ mean since TV started
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Because those people will leave. And then you have no tax revenue from them. And the people who make 55-70K a year, don’t work for a state, and aren’t unionized are actually the majority. Those are the people that are Christie’s base.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:40 AM
SG, I’m not picking on you specifically, but this is just entirely wrong.
The top 1% of income earners pay 40% of ALL federal income taxes.
While the bottom 50% of income earners pay a pathetic 3%.
So please help me square these facts with the rhetoric that evil rich people are untouchable and don’t pay their “fair share.”
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Seriously, guys.. just join my cabinet. Let me handle the debates, the speeches… all the tv nonsense. Then everyone else tackle the issues once we get inside the white house. SC.. make me some goddamn buttons already!
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Good job extending the analogy.
well done watsonian, well done
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:42 AM
First, I disagree. Do you really think a rich person with a family that has their kids in good schools is going to move just because their tax level went up a few percentage points? No way.
Second, who’s to say the middle class person getting salary cuts and increasing benefits costs is going to stay in your state? Why wouldn’t THEY move if all this happens?
The “people moving” thing is not a good enough excuse to not balance a budget over all class levels in all business sectors.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Another figure: the top 10% of income earners pay 71% of all federal income taxes.
What is the liberal idea of fair for these high-earners? The top 10% should pay 100% of federal income tax while the 90% of the rest of us don’t pay shit?
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Thank for you putting words in my mouth. I was just pointing out that Walker was elected as a budget hawk and then immediately created a shortfall that he’s using to curtail CBA rights.
Also, Jersey, Jaz-Z can’t escape a federal income tax unless he leaves the country and stops making money here. Warren Buffet and Bill Gates asked for a tax hike on the super-rich for a reason: they see it as a part of the overall solution.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:44 AM
we defeated the established taliban regime in a month.
that’s a hot knife thru butter, brah.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Mike NYC, when the gap between the richest and poorest is continuously widening, wouldn’t it make sense that the very, very richest would end up paying an even larger and larger percentage of income taxes?
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:44 AM
First, I disagree. Do you really think a rich person with a family that has their kids in good schools is going to move just because their tax level went up a few percentage points? No way.
Yes, you would. If you’re rich you can afford to send your kids to good schools anywhere.
Think about it. Why do you think a lot of athletes have homes in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee? No state income taxes.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Federal taxes? No. But a state’s millionaire’s tax like we were previously discussing? Yes.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:45 AM

for you doglovers here (/no bestiality) one of my fave sounds has always been a big dog eating crunchy food
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Well as usual, I’m pro federal action.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Federal taxes? No. But a state’s millionaire’s tax like we were previously discussing? Yes.
Yep… federal and state taxes are 2 completely different issues, obviously.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:46 AM
On a complete side note, the newest Jimmy Eat World album is pretty sweet.
Goddamn Commies
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Yes, they would. Because you can move to Florida and still get your kids a really good education in a nice place to live with no problem. There’s a reason the Steinbrenners, Jeter, etc. work in NYC from April to October but are still residents of Florida. There are tons of businesses here that moved while the previous governor was around because their taxes were way too high. It happens more than you think.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Mike, I don’t think that. Honestly. I hate taxes. I’m already pissed at the amount of money they take from me and I’m not rich. I can only imagine what it would be like if I was making a nice chunk of change every year only to see almost half of it go to the government.
My whole point is when you have a multi-BILLION dollar defecit you have to cut everywhere.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Why are we still there? Why haven’t we achieved our goal? There’s more to conquering a country than what we did in a month. Far more.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:48 AM
I haven’t watched any of them in years. It’s bad information skewed into a viewpoint that supports whatever party they’re schilling for. I take great joy in watching Stewart pointing out all they hypocrites employed by MSNBC, FOX, etc.. The piece he had the other night pointing out the change in perception that FOX and MSNBC had on the tea partiers and WI protesters was laugh out loud comical.
imagine being a peon wokring for these networks’ there’s no way they hire only ‘party line’ people, sp if yer a decent thinking person, it must suck to work there, especially if you watch Stewart
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:48 AM
There’s a reason the Steinbrenners, Jeter, etc. work in NYC from April to October but are still residents of Florida.
And why most credit card companies have their headquarters in Delaware… they give those businesses which make money hand over fist HUGE tax breaks.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:50 AM
How much of the total income available to be taxed is earned by the top 10%? Doesn’t that have to be factored in before determining what’s fair?
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Well, give me a figure. 10% of the population pays 71% of federal income taxes. How much more should they pay?
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:51 AM
And as I said earlier, he has. There was the whole hudson tunnel project a couple months ago that hardly got any news nationally because it didn’t involve teachers, cops, or firefighters. He really isn’t just focusing on public employees, that’s just what gets national attention.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:52 AM
al qaeda is not a conquerable entity. al qaeda doesn’t have anything to conquer.
we’re there because those assholes are going to do damage until they’re all killed. it doesn’t matter if they’re in afghanistan or in pakistan or in india or russia or anywhere…they sunk their claws into the afghan government, and we kicked the shit out of them.
just because there are a handful of insurgents left taking potshots at marine platoons doesn’t mean the enemy thinks they’ve won or have any shot of beating the US. they just want to be annoying to the point where we give up, like the soviets (who absolutely wrecked afghanistan in the 80′s until the mujahideen started their nitpickery).

The “Vanishing Millionaires” is a political talking point. A bad one.

March 2nd, 2011 at 10:52 AM
also…we’re still there so we can rebuild the shit we destroyed.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:52 AM
It’s why Stewart is so good. They point out the absurdity of cable news.
Totally. It has to be excruciating at times.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Please, top 1% owns 33% of all of the wealth in this country and can/has bought every branch of government. How is the middle class supposed to combat this concentration of wealth? The GINI Index in the US is worse than Egypt. There’s more inequality in this country everyday, and the majority of us take it in the ass. Our highest GDP peacetime growth was during the 50′s when the wealthiest were paying 70+% effective taxes.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:54 AM
This isn’t a liberal/conservative thing – it’s a budget thing. We have a huge debt to repay and the money has to come from somewhere. EVERYONE has to get hit, the rich, the poor, the middle class EVERYONE.
I know there are many politicians who just want to push a conservative or liberal agenda but that’s not going to do anything here. It’s not about politics, it’s about fixing shit that’s broken.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:54 AM
And we have to raise taxes. You have to cut and raise taxes…but no politician will admit this (certainly none on Right anyway) because politicians have (and never will be) in the business of telling people what they need to hear. They tell them what they want to hear.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:56 AM
This seems like a good time to link this.
It’s interesting to play. To make it really hard, make sure to keep the tax cuts that were just continued.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:56 AM
We already know the effective rates. If you earn more than $170k a year you’re paying 2.2x the rate (not dollar amount, but rate) of someone earning $30k a year.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:57 AM
That should tell you something about the huge chunk of the pie the top 1% is raking in.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:57 AM
I hate politics. I wish people could just look at the problem and try solve it reasonably instead of saying shit they know people want to hear.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Another mindless fallacy.
Wealth isn’t owned, it’s earned. How are us plebes supposed to “combat” other people’s success? By being successful ourselves. Go to school, learn, get a good job; start a business, hire people. There is no magical money tree that only grows in the back yards of wealthy people, you know.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:59 AM
And 30 years ago that person making 170K was paying 4.5x the rate. Then reagan slashed that rate, and bush slashed it even more. Now the Dems are asking that bush’s tax cuts be eliminated. The right wants those tax cuts for the wealthy to stay in place. Seems how this country is operating in the red, maybe the dems are right on this debate.
March 2nd, 2011 at 10:59 AM
THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Again — there is no fixed “pie” that says only a certain amount of wealth can be earned. You want to be rich? Go out and do something instead of crying about it on a sports blog.
Ok, I’m done — good talk.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:00 AM
they give those businesses which make money hand over fist HUGE tax breaks.
just like rich athletes get a watch for appearing on the Leadoff Show. the folks who need it least get things free. yet, you want businesses because they hire (and fire) local people. life is all about leverage baby
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Yeah…the little Steinbrenners really earned their wealth. So did Paris Hilton and the Kardashians.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Hank Steinbrenner disagrees
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:01 AM
The game is rigged to benefit the wealthy (tax loopholes, deregulation, etc.).
Its like playing a game of Monopoly in which the rich start out with 10x as much money as the other players, get infinite get out of jail free cards, and get to roll 5 times for every turn you get.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:02 AM
not a fan of inheritance, huh?
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:02 AM
we’re there because those assholes are going to do damage until they’re all killed. it doesn’t matter if they’re in afghanistan or in pakistan or in india or russia or anywhere
i thought the whole bin laden thing was PR. it’s been put to bed already: kill him and nothing changes. nothing. the next steps in line, if he’s been motivating and planning anything at all, that is
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:03 AM
I’m actually a huge fan of federal death taxes.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:04 AM
That’s why the top of the richest Americans list is filled with Waltons.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Not a fan of the blanket statement: all wealthy people have earned their money and if youre not wealthy its because you havent tried hard enough.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:04 AM
To “top 10%” starts with people who make as little as ~$110,000, by the way.
These aren’t rich people.
And 90% of people in this country make less than that. The idea isn’t to tax them more, I hope.
Also, as best I can tell, no amount of federal taxation has yet sent a 1 percenter into the poor house.
No, the federal government doesn’t own the money they have earned.
But if they earned their way up the ladder, they did so as part of the progressive, graduated tax system that helps make this country great and is one of the reasons people have the ability to move up the ladder.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:04 AM
political arguments on blogs are funny.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:05 AM
I love Amanda Seyfried. But I don’t love that picture of her.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:05 AM
That implies there are enough opportunities out there for everyone to be rich. It also completely factors out all the necessary jobs that don’t pay as well much but would keep the country from functioning without them – teachers, plumbers, electricians, sanitation workers, miners, farmers, oil rig operators, etc.

not a great example of poor folks. ask mr. ejr, aka, Moneybags
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Eh, oil rig operators work an incredibly dangerous job and get paid mad money per hour. They definitely earn it. I had a friend who worked a rig for 6 months, said he nearly got himself killed two times. He also worked like 80 hours a week but got paid crazy money.

I think everyone would love to be rich but we live in a reality where not everyone can be rich. I just want to be able to live comfortably and happy and not worry about money.
I don’t understand why you feel like we’re asking the rich people to pay us for being poorer than them. It’s not like I’m going door to door in Kenilworth and asking the people in multi-million dollar homes to help me pay for my shitty benefits! .
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:12 AM
anyone can learn to plumb, sanitate, mine, farm or oil rig (?), but not everyone can control ridiculously large institutions just because they have a bachelor’s degree or some shit.
the opportunity is out there for every single one of us to assume massive quantities of wealth…we’re just not smart or headstrong enough to realize it. it sucks, but that’s the way it is.

oh I totally agree. I don’t get involved in them because I don’t know enough to make a logical argument. I guess I just think it is funny how people will stick to their guns no matter how illogical the argument may become.

Been there already. I was shitfaced pounding a bottle of jager screaming how the Clemson intro was “the most boring 25 seconds in college football.” Cool stadium.
/UGA won 31-3 I believe.
//it was awesome

Does North Texas have that successful of a football team?
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Lefty hates Clemson as I guess the Nerds don’t get along with them, but they were the nicest fans I’ve encountered. I would assume South Carolina fans would disagree though.

is it too late to take that original comment back?

Hey, don’t sleep on the college football experience in East Lansing.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:50 AM
I’d love to catch a Mich-MSU game there.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:52 AM
It’s better than watching it at the big house. That place sux. I’m not even being biased.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:52 AM
hey cfb fan (spencer)…wazzu is WSU. youdub is washington

go to a Vanderbilt game sometime, it’s closer to where you live and equally as pathetic. their stadium is a bigger joke than their football team, and that is saying a lot.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:54 AM
It really is the worst place to watch a cfb game that I’ve ever been to. And I feel like I’ve been to more than my fair share.
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:55 AM
i know…i was making a joke at wazzu’s expense.
/washington sucks too
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I’ve been to almost every stadium in the big10, and the big house might be the worst. Although, Purdue’s campus fucking sux.

Went to a Udub game a couple years ago – their epic 0-12 season – and there were, no joke, more seagulls in the stadium by the end of the 4th quarter than people in the stands. It was awful, awful football. Since Willingham’s been gone they have turned that around though. The stadium is pretty beat up, but they are going to be redoing it in the next couple of years.

ok, spence, i was just using my context clues. you mentioned UW stadium then typed wazzu
stadium might be crumbling bstr, but the location/view is sweet
March 2nd, 2011 at 12:04 PM
big house is meh. it’s kinda cool how big it is, but it’s an underwhelming experience.
March 2nd, 2011 at 12:05 PM
That’s… what she said?
March 2nd, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Exactly. You’d think 110,000 fans would make some noise.
March 2nd, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Absolutely. Any stadium you can boat to is pretty cool. When the stadium’s fixed up and with the team getting better it’ll be a great place to watch a game. I might head down more often.
For now, though, they’ll be at Qwest field, which is pretty nice itself.
