NFL Draft: High Expectations vs Reality
If I told you right now that Blaine Gabbert was going to have a career like Jim Everett, how high would you take him? I don’t mean literally every detail, because it’s hard to make a reference to a female tennis player with his name, but generally the same type of career. Jim Everett started for 10 seasons in the NFL, led the league in touchdown passes twice, and was above the league average in more than half of his seasons as a starter. He is nowhere near a Hall of Famer, but he had a reasonably long career as a slightly above average player at his position.
Still, my guess is most people would shy away from such a proposition, or at least undervalue where Gabbert should be drafted if we could see his, and only his, career among the 2011 draft class was such clarity. A player with the career of Jim Everett would end up being somewhere between the 10th and 15th best player in a draft class when we look back, maybe a little higher if you place greater emphasis on the quarterback position. Some of those guys were of the late round pick variety that came out of nowhere, and weren’t on any teams radar at the draft. Thus, if I told you what Gabbert’s career would be like, but didn’t reveal anyone else, you should probably consider him at a position higher than 10th to 15th. If I told you that your 5th pick in the draft would produce a guaranteed player that was between the 10th and 15th best, it would be an above average use of the pick.
Now, I’m not saying Blaine Gabbert will have a career like Jim Everett. Everett was the third overall pick in 1986, and as it turns out, he represents the top 25% of quarterbacks selected with a top ten pick since 1980. The median, that would be someone like Trent Dilfer, who many would consider a disappointment.
Is this to say that quarterback is a risky position compared to others, knowing that the average result is Trent Dilfer? Well, here’s a look at the 25th percentile (above average), 50th percentile (average), and 75th percentile (below average but not the worst) for players drafted from 1980-2005 at various positions:
————————————————————————————————————————————
| Position | 25th percentile | 50th percentile | 75th percentile | |||||||
| Quarterback | Jim Everett | Trent Dilfer | Todd Blackledge | |||||||
| Offensive Line | Lomas Brown | Jimbo Covert | Robert Gallery | |||||||
| Wide Receivers | Irving Fryar | Roy Williams | Reggie Williams | |||||||
| Running Backs | Ricky Williams | Ronnie Brown | Tommy Vardell | |||||||
| Defensive Line | Willie McGinest | Sean Gilbert | DeWayne Robertson | |||||||
| Linebackers | Carl Banks | Marvin Jones | Mike Croel | |||||||
| Secondary | Mark Haynes | Terry Kinard | Duane Starks | |||||||
————————————————————————————————————————————
I offer this as a dose of reality as I enter my grumpy middle-aged years. The average defensive linemen drafted in the top ten has a career roughly like Sean Gilbert. The average receiver = Roy E. Williams. If you make a decent pick relative to your peers and avoid busts, you probably are still not going to get that Hall of Fame difference maker. And yes, more Hall of Famers come from the top ten than any other segment of the draft; they still represent about the top 10% of players taken at the very top of the draft.
This extends on down, because the “average” player gets worse as draft position decreases. You think Ron Dayne was a complete bust? He’s far closer to the average running back taken between picks 11-20, where Mark Ingram is projected this year. Emmitt Smith is the anomaly. By late first round, sure you can get a Ray Lewis if you hit it big; Rob Morris is a pretty average selection at linebacker, though. Todd Pinkston? He would be a pretty average result for a early second round wide receiver.

Never seen this Mr. Gabbert before. Gross hair, dude.

You need Miz to help you out with those charts.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:20 PM
Hardly, he won that cobbler Phil Simms’ mom makes on Thanksgiving in Dallas that one year…don’t see that listed among Jim Brown’s accomplishments
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:22 PM
Who is Blane Gabbert?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:23 PM
you should see the table I made at lunch comparing every feature of the 2009 Toyota Camry models side by side: the CE, LE, SE, and SE V6. I had to shrink it down significantly just to fit it on an 11×17 printout.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:23 PM
because it’s hard to make a reference to a female tennis player with his name
But you could make a very dated joke about Men on Film. Two snaps with a twist if Gabbert is as good as Everett?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:25 PM
Showoff
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:25 PM
You need Miz to help you out with those charts.
Truth. I always forget because I get busy. Email me, mix, and I promise I will get back to you
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:25 PM
Emmitt Smith is the anomaly.
Something about this sentence strikes me as hilarious. If the Jets had drafted Emmitt at #2 instead of Blair Thomas, and Emmitt had gone on to exactly the same career with the Jets that he had with the Cowboys he’d still be a pretty far out extreme of what could be expected at his respective pick.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Yeah, come on Lisk. Be a grown up and outsource the tricky parts of the post to Miz.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Blaine Gabbert is on the verge of dipping into Fire Marshall Bill face.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:27 PM
Mix = miz. You would think, as a Missouri alum, my phone should recognize miz as a legit word

See? All sorts of In Living Colour going on with Blaine
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:28 PM
I heard a rumor that Jason Lisk, Esquire would be doing some baseball scribing around these parts during the season. Truth?

Please tell me you’re actually going to take that car shopping with you
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Hawkeye – absolutely. here’s my 2009 Camry table…I know you wanted to see it.

Only after it’s laminated.

I… really am… speechless? Usually only people that do that type of work are putting off working on their dissertation. They’ll do anything to not work on it.

Like Blaine Edwards he will look at football from a male point of view.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:33 PM
I was mostly interested in the base differences in the models since they can be priced differently by several thousand.

gabbert looks like this douchebag coworker of mine…so fuck him, i hope he goes undrafted.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Remember when TBL said this on Monday? Did he ever post that stuff he claimed would not support Mayock’s theory?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Lisk: I guess what you’re saying is trust the scouts and the draft boards. Which is fine. But I’m not afraid to admit that I’ve seen this guy play once and still can’t get how he became such a desirable prospect.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:35 PM
Are you buying a car or were you just curious?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:35 PM
There’s also a column missing regarding size of rear window. I know you don’t want to go too small so you can fit all of these on there.
Don’t mind me, just reviving an old meme here.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:35 PM
Why a Camry? Just curious.

March 2nd, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Yes…it was a list of 10 guys who did really well on the bench press, were drafted late, and had middling careers. Thus proving that GMs do not overrate the bench press results.
I am still not sure what side he is on.

her current car is a 2003 Camry and we like it a lot. we’re shopping though because we just rolled by 192k miles so it’s about that time to get something younger.

Lisk, you’re getting better at captions by the way.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:38 PM

March 2nd, 2011 at 3:41 PM
not wary of the recent safety issues from toyota?
You mean the ones where it turned out people were actually hitting the accelerator when they claimed that they weren’t, but the government fined Toyota the largest corporate fine for a car maker ever only to then come out with a report a year later that showed, after investigation, that people were in fact hitting the accelerator when they thought and claimed that they weren’t?
Those issues?

Quasi-bannery? He made some joke about rape that TBL deleted (why? isn’t rape always comedy gold?) and then he tried to post it again because the comment was eaten. So he was in some kind of permanent moderation. I feel like I’ve seen him comment here since then but I might be confused because he’s on the twitters so much and also comments at TVF

but the government fined Toyota the largest corporate fine for a car maker ever only to then come out with a report a year later that showed…
Umm, MS, do you work for Toyota or something? The fines were for not recalling the cars when they had ample evidence that the cars needed to be recalled. The fact that the problems were not as serious as was being popularly reported and were, in fact, related to a problem that had been reported on other moderls does not exonerate Toyota from perpetuating a public hazard rather than risk a drop in profitability.

March 2nd, 2011 at 3:48 PM
Wow. Didn’t see that. I didn’t think people who could form coherent sentences were able to stoop that low.
it was an autotune related joke. The joke wasn’t about the rape so much as the idea that making fun of it would be a good idea.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:49 PM
At least, thats my understanding.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:49 PM
I wasn’t really judging him. Just saying the only time I’ve ever seen him play It’s not like there was a huge “Blaine Gabbert is a fantastic prospect” campaign going on until recently. I just found it odd.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:49 PM
It seemed like it was in mockery of the autotuned reporter post. Not saying it was in good taste or even an appropriate comparison, but that’s why he did it.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:49 PM
was that also related to that horribly rediculous autotune thing with that reporter that had stroke like symptoms that TBL thought was hilarious?
/banned?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:49 PM
Wait… I’m just finding out about this now? Does this thing actually exist?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:50 PM
Umm, MS, do you work for Toyota or something? The fines were for not recalling the cars when they had ample evidence that the cars needed to be recalled. The fact that the problems were not as serious as was being popularly reported and were, in fact, related to a problem that had been reported on other moderls does not exonerate Toyota from perpetuating a public hazard rather than risk a drop in profitability.
No, I just hate stupidity.
I’ll rephrase, yes some of the Toyota problems were legit. But the government panel which investigated the initial recall found no electrical issues that would have caused unintended acceleration, and that most claims of unintended acceleration were either due to people mistakenly hitting the accelerator when they thought they were hitting the brake or allowing the floor mat to interfere with the pedals.
Something very similar happened to Jeep with the Cherokee in the 90s. And an investigation then showed that the Cherokee’s pedals were further to the side than most other cars and so people were indeed hitting the accelerator when they thought they were hitting the brake.
/dumps Toyota stock.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:50 PM
Yup. it was a joke about TBL posting the autotuned version of the rape or something very close to that. It’s part of what made TBL mention the velvet rope. Has there been any more mention of that lately?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:50 PM

March 2nd, 2011 at 3:51 PM
And velvet rope? What the hell?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:52 PM
No way that’s true. If it was, I’d be dipping that shit in 2 pounds of butter after a drunken night fo sho.

Why wouldn’t it? Could get Johnsonville brats from McDonalds for a couple years up here. I can see a lobster roll in Maine
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:53 PM
It’s not like there was a huge “Blaine Gabbert is a fantastic prospect” campaign going on until recently.
This is untrue. Gabbert has been getting prospect lust from clammy homoerotic evals since he was in high school. I feel like even McShay and Viper were loving on him before the season but I don’t read them very often
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:53 PM

It only happens about once every 1-2 months…the comments don’t drive it, just depends on if TBL is ornery about something
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:54 PM
Is this like the time he came up with 50 pitchers better than Curt Schilling?
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:54 PM
That was one of the things I was debating with TBL. He needs “clear expectations.”
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:55 PM
probably not because of character concerns, but in terms of actual on-field results, he’s far beyond gabbert, that’s for sure.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:55 PM
But it looks like a hotdog bun filled with something found in a dumpster outside of a Long John Silvers.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:55 PM
Commenter tryouts was the idea that got floated. So it wouldn’t really be a banning you just wouldn’t be “chosen”. It reminds me of Adventism when I put it in those terms. I want to be one of the 144,000 in commenter heaven!
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:55 PM
…well he could, but the comments would be even more pitchforky and torchy when somebody got banned.

Pryor wins more games. I get it. I wonder if Cousins will get some love in next year’s draft. Seriously . . .
Drafting based on who went to the better program is like giving the Cy Young to the guy with the most wins.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:58 PM
it’s pretty funny when you think about banable offenses then read the commenter’s bill of rights.
I think TBL has pretty much forgotten that exists by now. But as Butters said, he only seems to float these ‘ideas’ when he’s pissed off about something.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:58 PM
in terms of actual on-field results, he’s far beyond gabbert, that’s for sure.
Context, fellow, please. Gabbert is a much better passer than Terrelle. It is not outside the realm of possibility that Pryor cleans up his throwing motion and vaults up boards next year because he is a really gifted athlete and has decent arm strength hidden below his shot-putting but he needs a ton of work. It won’t help him to miss 5 games but if he could get some pro-style QB coaching while he’s on the sidelines it might be worth it.
March 2nd, 2011 at 3:59 PM

March 2nd, 2011 at 4:01 PM
This right here. I thought my “Pryor wins more games” sarcasm was pretty clear.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:01 PM
context yourself, lawya…gabbert plays in a one-read system and isn’t asked to go thru progressions, making his job A LOT easier. just look at some of the stats chase daniel was putting up at mizzou with that high-tempo, spread em out offense.
pryor’s an underrated passer with some extended periods of complete mental gaffes. im not saying pryor doesn’t need work, but at this point, he’s a MUCH better prospect than gabbert, who played in a gimmick system, never dropped back and faced big XII defenses not worth the uniforms they put on.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:01 PM
BTW, I am going to use “clammy homoeroticism” in every instance I am able to for the foreseeable future. it is taking up mindspace that was formerly occupied by the NASCAR/AIDS open minds campaign

March 2nd, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Nice post Lisk. Love your analysis on this.
If I was Carolina and had this guarantee, I would take Gabbert in a heart beat. Imagine being able to lock up the hardest position to fill for the next 10 years with an above average player. Especially with the money they will invest in the top pick (and subsequent contracts). Seems like a no-brainer.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:03 PM
right after he beats Ohio State

Please find a non-ohio state homer that shares this opinion.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Jersey is WINNING.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:05 PM
Obviously.
That’s unpossible.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:05 PM
i can’t find anyone who doesn’t completely hate the kid to back up my objective opinion.
i mean, id love to actually discuss pryor the football player without someone coming in and basically saying “hurr, he’s an asshole and fuck OSU.” pryor does some fucking outrageous shit on the field, but apparently that’s not good enough.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:05 PM
gabbert plays in a one-read system and isn’t asked to go thru progressions, making his job A LOT easier.
Oh, Spencer, you missed it. Close to the point but missed it entirely. Gabbert actually has good mechanics when he throws. Pryor has terrible, I mean sub-Tebow level TERRIBLE, mechanics when he throws. Offensive system has nothing to do with Gabbert’s footwork and throwing motion. He rates really well in those things and always has. I’m not arguing his credentials as a future star because I don’t think he’s likely to be great but he at least looks like a QB back there and his physical gifts are similar (no clammy homoeroticism) to Pryor as far as size and speed
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:05 PM
For real? Get me Abbey Brooks and Mariah Milano into my goddess harem… STAT.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:05 PM
haha, nah, just lamenting the changes over the years i’ve been here.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:07 PM
Taguchi gets it. It’s actually quite the shitshow Watsonian. 36 hours of drunk. No doubt NOLA is better, but, I work with what I got.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:07 PM
“hurr, he’s an asshole and fuck OSU.”
Not what I’m saying. I actually gave you a little bit of a rundown of his problems as a prospect but if you’re going to ignore them in favor of your own narrative I can’t stop you.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:08 PM
no, i saw that and i know pryor has work to do on his mechanics. but ive watched every game he’s played in columbus and he’s steadily improved the entire time.
how can you say this? it has everything to do with gabbert’s footwork…how can you say he “rates really well” in something he’s never done in a game situation? mayock said that gabbert took 98% of his snaps out of the shotgun where he’d make one read and throw…we have no idea what gabbert’s footwork is like.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:08 PM
no…i just didn’t see that comment while i was typing the “hurr” part.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:09 PM
Pfffft. Taylor Graham or Kenny Guiton would beat MSU next year.
/Braxton will smoke em
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:10 PM
we have no idea what gabbert’s footwork is like.
We have some idea. He balances himself and throws off the proper foot. Pryor has problems with these very minimal basics of being an NFL QB
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:10 PM
Ok. I’ll take you’re guys words for it. Must of just been my lack of desire to watch a lot of Big 12 football.
watching Big 12 footabll >>>> Watching ND lose to Tulsa or Navy
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:12 PM
What’s funny about this convo is that I’m actually a Pryor believer. I think he could be a really good QB but he needs to get the hell beat out of him by a good offensive staff in the league
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:12 PM
So does Killa Cam. Go back and watch the Championship Game. Very inconsistent mechanics.
Cam throws a “prettier” ball than Pryor, but his accuracy is just as sketchy, if not worse.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:12 PM
I have no hate for Pryor or OSU. I just don’t think he’s a highly-regarded pro prospect.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:14 PM
I had no clue St. Louis got down like that. I’m just waiting for St. Paddy’s here in Chicago next weekend. Gonna be a blast.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:14 PM
Vladdy, I know you root for the Wings and Indians, but who do you root for in CFB?
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:15 PM
I agree, but I’m also not a faggot. SEC and Big 10 get my rooting interests when it’s not ND related.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:15 PM
and gabbert has a problem with the minimal basics of being a COLLEGE quarterback…but he’s a better pro prospect. got it.
this kinda reminds me of a kobe vs. lebron debate…kobe can do all these technically perfect things…and yet he’s not as productive as lebron. who cares how good someone’s technique and form is?
nevermind pryor threw for more than TWO more yard per attempt, or threw for more TD’s against tougher defenses than gabbert ever faced in the charmin soft big XII…and that’s not even getting into the fact that pryor’s actually worked on progressive reads.
my point isn’t that pryor’s a great prospect who’ll go in the first round, it’s that he’s a better prospect than gabbert, that’s all.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:16 PM
Considering he is able to go three deep on the OSU QB depth chart, your answer should be obvious.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:16 PM
Jersey is defintitely WINNING today.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:16 PM

March 2nd, 2011 at 4:16 PM
Hoboken this Saturday. Erin Express in Philly next weekend. Actual St. Patty’s in NY coinciding with 1st round tourney games. March!!!!

March 2nd, 2011 at 4:17 PM
nevermind that cam accumulated his ridiculous stats in an offense than ran more plays than any team not named oregon or michigan.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:17 PM
I didn’t either at first. Typically, I’d rather just piss on St. Louis and move on, but I’ll use them for what they are worth.

March 2nd, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Don’t really like either one, but I have seen Gabbert play quite a few times; think Joe Flacco.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:20 PM
How about the game in Lincoln this year when he had his shit pushed in? Can I judge him on that?
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:21 PM
/high fives
All months are just trying to catch up to March.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:21 PM
nevermind pryor threw for more than TWO more yard per attempt
When all of your throws are down the field this happens. You’re arguing college system in place of actual physical skills here, which is actually what they are being judged on. Cam Newton’s pretty balls (see the clammy homoeroticism?) aside, his throwing motion is much closer to “classical” than Terrelle’s but I worry about him being a lofter. He’s also much more apparently athletically gifted than either Pryor or Gabbert, and that’s saying a lot
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:22 PM
No wonder Spencer hates him.

So you think he’s terrible too?
/Stares at D. Mason
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:23 PM
i prefer his 12/30, 95 yard effort against that staunch, steel curtain 2.0 texas tech defense.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:24 PM
I love Spencer for comments like this.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:24 PM
pryor and cam are carbon copies of each other…pryor’s going to wreck the combine just like cam did this year.
and you know peyton manning? his throwing motion is fugly and his balls wobble (lol…clammy!)…doesn’t mean a damn thing.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:24 PM
Seriously, fuck spread offenses in college. It’s ruining prospective NFL qbs.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:24 PM
Let’s not get out of control here. Pryor has been clocked by the laser at 4.3 in the 40. Even if he runs in the 4.4s at the combine, that’s faster than Cam.
He played all of last year with numerous lower body injuries. When fully healthy, he is very close to Cam with regard to athleticism.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:25 PM
oh, you stay out of it. you’re THE single biggest pryor hater i’ve ever come across.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:26 PM
I disagree. Gabbert is a much better athlete than Flacco, and while his arm is not Flacco awesome, it’s pretty fucking big.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:26 PM
it’s ruining high school too. gabbert and pryor are two great examples of guys who had a STEEP learning curve thanks to their HS offenses struggling.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:26 PM
You spelled homer wrong.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:26 PM
It really is. Lisk should dwell on this.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Even if he runs in the 4.4s at the combine, that’s faster than Cam.
He won’t, so don’t worry about that. By “apparently” I mean that when you watch any of the 3 playing in a game, Cam Newton’s athleticism pops out way more than the other two. He is, to borrow a term from TBL, “fluid” in a way that the others are not
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Just call Matt Stafford Mr. Glass and you’ll be all square
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:28 PM
The only think Pryor will do better than Cam is run.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:28 PM
Don’t really like either one, but I have seen Gabbert play quite a few times; think Joe Flacco.
I disagree. Gabbert is a much better athlete than Flacco, and while his arm is not Flacco awesome, it’s pretty fucking big.
More of what I think his ceiling is rather than a direct comparison of skills, I actually think Gabbert will be a lot like El Chupacabra…
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:28 PM
what the hell? cam’s athleticism pops because they use him as a rich-poor man’s running back half the time.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:29 PM
well, i can’t imagine anyone throwing worse than 11-21 at the combine, so maybe pryor will beat him there too.
/objectivity
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:30 PM
It’s a fucking disease. I blame Texas HS football more than anything.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:30 PM

March 2nd, 2011 at 4:31 PM
The only think Pryor will do better than Cam is run.
well, i can’t imagine anyone throwing worse than 11-21 at the combine, so maybe pryor will beat him there too.
/objectivity
To be fair, the air was playing some very tight coverage that day
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:32 PM
I wouldn’t be shocked to see Pryor look just as bad. I don’t think either player will be a good NFL QB.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:33 PM
Bets teams in NJ have been using it too, lately. Fucking disgusts me.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:34 PM
I think Gabbert can be pretty good, actually, but the problem for him, Cam, Locker and Mallett is most likely they will go to a shitty team that requires early playing time. I don’t think any of them are ready for that unless they land with a team that is a top-10 rushing offense.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:34 PM
i think pryor has a better chance just because he’s had 2.5 years of at least TRYING to learn how to go thru progressions. both are EXTREME projects at the NFL level, but pryor’s got a headstart in the classroom.
/can’t wait til he’s gone so i can stop defending him and start rooting for braxton
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:34 PM
Spence, I appreciate the effort in defending Pryor but all I can think of when people bring up his passing is this.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:35 PM
He had more “highlight plays”, if that’s what you mean. This is symptomatic of Pryor trying way to hard to be a pocket passer.
Newton definitely has better agility in the open field but Pryor may have better straight line speed. I’m not sure Cam’s agility will benefit him that much in the NFL. I want my QB running to the corner and getting out of bounds instead of trying to juke out NFL LBs.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:36 PM
That’s logical. I don’t think it will make much a difference to be honest, but I certainly see the logic in it.
It’s just now coming into Georgia HS football. Most of the good teams use a more pro set, but many are going the spread route now. It’s depressing.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:36 PM
i don’t see how gabbert can be good when he wasn’t that good at the college level. i mean, what…he’s just gonna figure out MORE complex offenses when he looked lost for stretches at a time in one of the most simple passing offenses in CFB?
i still see mallett as the best of the bunch in the NFL as long as he goes to a coryell-esque offense with a strong line.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:36 PM
lol…love that pic.

Gabbert is a smart kid with all of the tools. I think he can be taught the game. I agree with Mallett. I think he is more like Flacco that anyone else in the draft. He does seem like he’s crumble under fierce pressure though. That’s one thing I know Cam won’t do (god fucking dammit).
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:41 PM
Not sure why I think this, but I imagine Gabbert’s career path unfolding on a kind of Jim Everett-esque track.
March 2nd, 2011 at 4:41 PM
yep…mallett can’t deal with pressure up the middle to save his life. pittsburgh would make his life hell for an hour.

All of these QB’s should hope to get drafted by Buffalo (has that ever been typed?). Chan Gailey knows how to make a mobile QB effective. If he can turn Kordell Stewart into a pro-bowler, he’ll be able to work wonders for Newton/Locker/Pryor/etc.
March 2nd, 2011 at 5:47 PM
yes
